Mask discipline must, insists Palike chief
Bengaluru:
Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Chief Commissioner Gaurav Gupta on Monday said the rise and fall in cases depends on how people follow mask discipline. Speaking to the media he said, some relaxations have been given as the number of cases have come down, and curbs can be eased even further if people follow Covid-appropriate behaviour.

“It all depends on mask compliance and vaccination along with social distancing being followed. Then, there will be complete unlock,” he said. He pointed that citizens should not let their guard down and special marshals committees and the police will be keeping a check. All those violating norms will be dealt with sternly.

On the issue of vaccination, Gupta said, so far 50 per cent of the adult population in Bengaluru has taken the first dose. The number can be increased to even 80-85 per cent, provided there is sufficient stock available.

Delta 8 times less sensitive to vaccine antibodies

July 6, 2021 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI: The Delta variant of novel coronavirus is eight times less sensitive to antibodies generated by vaccines as compared to the original strain that came from China’s Wuhan, according to a new study. The study, which was conducted on more than 100 healthcare workers (HCWs) at three centres in India including Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH), found that the B.1.617.2 Delta variant not only dominates vaccine-breakthrough infections with higher respiratory viral loads compared to non-Delta infections but also generates greater transmission among the fully vaccinated HCWs. The collaborative study, “Sars-Cov-2 B.1.617.2 Delta Variant Emergence and Vaccine Breakthrough: Collaborative Study”, from India with scientists from Cambridge Institute of Therapeutic Immunology and Infectious Disease is yet to be peer-reviewed.

“From this study, it appears that we have miles to go before we sleep in case of Covid-19 pandemic. Mutations are bound to happen if we lower our guard and allow ourselves to fall prey to this virus, giving it an opportunity to multiply,” said Dr Chand Wattal, chairperson of the Institute of Clinical Microbiology and Immunology, SGRH.

“This is a straight eye-opener to the fully vaccinated people that you cannot lower guard in the name of vaccination. The virus is on the prowl, still looking for its prey. This mutant has come back with enhanced spike proteins for attachment to the lung epithelial cells which have provided it with a much higher capacity to infect many more people than the Wuhan strain,” he said.

The data also indicates that the dominance of the Delta variant in India has been most likely driven by a combination of evasion of neutralising antibodies in previously infected individuals and increased virus infectivity resulting in the second wave, the study said.

Advocate association demands state government to ban online gaming apps

July 6, 2021 by Nasheman

Pramesh Jain

Concerned over increasing trend of children addicted to mobile phones for their online classes during lock down period and eventually hooked to online gaming apps, city based advocate association (five years law course )  has urged the state government to ban those apps which posing threat to children health.

Association President,S Umesh also warned the government that he will take legal course if the government failed to act immediately.

In a petition to the government, Mr.Umesh said that the online gaming apps have now become a bigger menace than single digit lottery which had destroyed many households and even led to suicides in Karnataka some year ago.

These online games which have an entry fee border on gambling and wagering.

Though some gaming companies try to make a distinction between game of skill which is legal and game of chance which is illegal,in reality most games promote betting and children are falling for the trap.

There is also no transparency on the Internal financial transactions of the company as there is no clarity on what percentage of the total amount collected is given away as prizes.

According to an international audit tax and advisory services company (KPMG) has estimated that gaming revenue could touch Rs 19,000 crore which only given an indication of the huge amount involved.

While the public are fleeced on one hand, the state does not receive any royalty. This is nothing but daylight robbery.

Following complaints of gambling and suicides, Tamilnadu,Andhra Pradesh,Kerala and some other states have already banned all forms of online games which involve payment.

With online learning now becoming the norm, a large number of students too are getting hooked to the game.

We demand an immediate ban on all online gaming apps on the lines of Tamil Nadu and other states in Karnataka too.

While lakhs of people are getting addicted to these games, the bigger danger is of children who are now pursuing online studies being lured into betting and gambling.Mr.Umesh,said in his complaint he added.

Digital evidence to be handled with care by IO – Praveen Sood

July 6, 2021 by Nasheman

Pramesh Jain

In an effort to improve the overall efficiency and improve prosecution rates in cyber crime cases, the State Police chief, Praveen Sood on Saturday issued a circular directing the investigating officers (IO) to take extreme care while handling digital evidence.

This is to ensure integrity and authenticity while taking the cases to their logical end,

According to the State Police chief,Mr.Praveen Sood,Instead of relying on private players,Mr. Sood asked the IOs to use the support and guidance of staff from Cybercrime,Economic Offence and Narcotics (CEN),Station or the staff of Cyber Forensic units of CID, or the State Forensic Science Lab for the professional touch and care.

While releasing a set of standard operation procedures (SOPs)and guidelines,Mr.Sood stated that the purpose is to provide police and prosecution systematic guidance to help them understand the technical and legal issues that may arise while handling electronic evidence at the crime scene investigations.

Investigation of any criminal case involves identification, collection and preservation of evidence to support the theory taken by the IO.

However,in the wake of significant rise in gathering electronic evidence including desktops, laptops, mobile phones, handheld devices and DVRs and CDRs,the IOs have to exercise special care while handling procedural, technical and digital aspects, the circular added.

Admissibility of digital evidence in the court heavily depends upon how it was handled and taken into possession,Mr.Sood reiterated.

According to a senior officer, there are two important factors while visiting any cyber crime scene. This includes quick recovery of evidence for preservation, and secondly containing the area to gather more details.

Quick recovery is important as the evidence is volatile and fragile.Mishandling the evidence leads to destruction of evidence permanently and losing the case eventually.

As per statistics, the conviction rate in cyber crime cases in the state are low, and a leading cause for dismissal of cases is the way the evidence is handled.
