Jos Buttler, Eoin Morgan under investigation for alleged racist remarks against Indians
LONDON: England’s white-ball skipper Eoin Morgan and wicketkeeper batsman Jos Buttler are under investigation by the country’s cricket board after their alleged racist tweets, mocking Indians, surfaced on the social media.
The posts, in which Buttler and Morgan used the word ‘sir’ to mock the Indians, started doing the rounds on social media after the ECB suspended pacer Ollie Robinson for some of his offensive tweets dating back to 2012-13.
“Screenshots have also been shared of a message by Buttler in which he says ‘I always reply sir no1 else like me like you like me’ and, separately, Morgan includes Buttler in a message which says, ‘Sir you’re my favourite batsman’,” according to a report in the Telegraph.co.uk.
Buttler and Morgan both feature in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the former playing for the Rajasthan Royals and the latter leading the Kolkata Knight Riders.
“Although there are questions over the precise context of the tweets, they were written at a time when Buttler and Morgan were established England players and have caused offence on social media,” the report added.
The ECB said the matter will be dealt in an appropriate manner.
“Since we were alerted to offensive tweets last week, a number of historical social media posts by other individuals have been questioned publicly as well,” an ECB spokesperson said on Tuesday.
“There is no place for discrimination in our sport, and we are committed to taking relevant and appropriate action where required.
“Given the concerns which have been raised are clearly now broader than a single case, the ECB Board will discuss how we deal with issues over historical social media material in a timely and appropriate manner.
“Each case will be considered on an individual basis, looking at all the facts. We will assess cases with the ECB Board before making further statements.”
A homophobic tweet dating back to 2010 from veteran pacer James Anderson has also emerged.
“For me it’s 10-11 years ago, I’ve certainly changed as a person. And I think that’s the difficulty, things do change, you do make mistakes,” Anderson told the British media.
Anderson, who will become England’s most capped Test player if he plays in the second Test against New Zealand on Thursday, said the squad is anxious about what could come out next.

Five Trinamool turncoats snap all contacts with BJP
KOLKATA: Five Trinamool Congress (TMC) turncoats who joined the BJP ahead of the recent Assembly elections have snapped all contacts with the saffron camp, a BJP functionary said on Monday.
“Since the elections results were announced, five former TMC MLAs, whom the BJP had fielded, but could not win, have snapped all contacts with the party. We tried to contact them, but we couldn’t. They are not reachable on the contact numbers available with the party,” said the functionary in Kolkata.
Another functionary said many others are maintaining a distance from the party since the election results came out.
“They may quit the BJP in the near future. It seems they are in touch with the TMC, but the ruling party has not yet decided its stand on those who are willing to come back,” he said.
Before the Assembly elections, 33 turncoat MLAs—most of them from the TMC—joined the BJP. The saffron camp fielded 18 of them. But, only five managed to win a seat.
The five MLAs are former minister Rajib Banerjee, Sabyasachi Dutta, Prabir Ghoshal, Wilson Champramary, and Shukra Munda.
Five other TMC turncoats, who had earlier joined the BJP, had also left the saffron camp. They are Sovan Chatterjee, Sonali Guha, Dipendu Biswas, Amal Acharya and Bachhu Hansda.
Meanwhile, TMC MP and spokesperson Saugata Roy said a final decision on whether to accept returning turncoats will be made by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The exodus from the Trinamool Congress to the BJP began after the latter made deep inroads into the former’s turf in 2019 by winning 18 of Bengal’s 42 Lok Sabha seats.

Singapore polytechnic suspends lecturer over racist remarks against Indian-Chinese descent couple
SINGAPORE: A Singapore polytechnic lecturer of Chinese-origin has been suspended from teaching duties for allegedly making racist remarks towards an interracial couple of a half-India and a half-Chinese descent, local media reported on Tuesday.
A spokesperson for Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) said the Chinese-origin lecturer has been suspended.
The polytechnic is aware of the video, the Channel News Asia quoted an NP spokesperson on Monday.
“We regret that the individual in question is a member of our staff. We take a very serious view of the matter as the remarks made by the individual are highly offensive, disrespectful and goes against our staff Code of Conduct and values as a community,” said the spokesperson.
“We are investigating this matter internally, including considering the appropriate disciplinary action to be taken. Meanwhile, the staff in question has been suspended from his teaching duties.”
The polytechnic cannot comment further as police investigations are ongoing, said the spokesperson.
The police said on Sunday night that a 60-year-old man was assisting with investigations, after confirming that reports had been lodged and investigations were ongoing.
In the video uploaded by Dave Parkash, a man in a red polo shirt with the word “Singapore” across it can be heard telling Parkash and his girlfriend to date people of their “own race”.
The man in red, who acknowledged he is a “Chinese Singaporean”, then added: “I’ve got nothing against you personally, but I think it’s racist that the Indian prey on a Chinese girl.”
When Parkash, 26, called him a racist, the man in red agreed that he was.
In the video, Parkash said he is “half Indian, half Filipino”, while his girlfriend is “half Singaporean Chinese, half Thai”.
Parkash was with his girlfriend, Jacqueline Ho, 27, on Saturday night in Orchard Road when they were approached by the Chinese man, who said that it was a disgrace for a Chinese girl and an Indian man to be together, among other disparaging remarks.
Shocked at the remark, Parkash confronted the man, while Ho began recording the nine-minute-long video.
Parkash said that by posting the video online, he hoped that people will know it is “not okay to shame others based on their race and skin colour”.
Sharing the video on Facebook on Sunday, Home Affairs and Law Minister K Shanmugam wrote: “I used to believe that Singapore was moving in the right direction on racial tolerance and harmony.
Based on recent events, I am not so sure anymore.
“If it’s accurate – then it’s horrible. It seems like more people are finding it acceptable, to make ‘in your face’ racist statements – openly. And some try to explain away, each time something like this happens,” he continued, adding that this is “quite unacceptable” and “very worrying”.
Punjab govt shouldn’t have sold COVID vaccines to private hospitals: P Chidambaram
This comes amid allegations by the opposition about COVID-19 vaccines being sold to private hospitals at higher prices by the Punjab government for profit.
NEW DELHI: Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Monday said Punjab Government should not have sold COVID vaccines to private hospitals.
Responding to a question on the alleged selling of COVID vaccines by Punjab Government to private hospitals, the Congress leader said, “I agree that Punjab government should not have given vaccines to private hospitals. But what is the proportion of vaccines they gave to private hospitals in few days when that policy was in force? Maybe 1-2 per cent. They have corrected it now.”
“The underlying message is that the government has learned from its mistakes. They made two cardinal mistakes and made effort to correct those mistakes. But as usual bluff and bluster, Prime Minister blames the opposition for the mistakes he committed,” said Chidambaram.
This comes amid allegations by the opposition about COVID-19 vaccines being sold to private hospitals at higher prices by the Punjab government for profit.
His remarks came after PM Modi in his televised address on Monday announced that the Centre will provide free COVID-19 vaccine to all Indian citizens above 18 years of age from June 21 and it will handle the 25 per cent vaccination that was with states till now under the liberalised plan announced earlier.
The Prime Minister said the Centre will procure 75 per cent of the total production of the vaccine doses and provide them free to the states. No state government would be spending anything on vaccines.
Covid vaccination policy: PM Modi blames it on states, Opposition faults government
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday sought to point fingers at states that suggested decentralisation of the rollout, to deflect blame for framing the widely criticised Covid vaccination policy that came into effect on May 1.
A similar line of argument earlier came from NITI Aayog member V K Paul, who had squarely blamed the states for messing up the campaign.
But CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury criticised the PM’s reasoning. “The Union government and the BJP must learn to accept responsibility for its failures when people of this country have paid with their lives. This incessant focus on spin and PR is an assault on and insult to the millions who perished in the pandemic,” he said. Yechury attributed the latest policy shift to pressure from the Supreme Court’s observations.
Opposition-ruled states broadly welcomed the PM’s decision. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin said “as the Prime Minister stressed multiple times that health is a state subject, it will be appropriate for each state to be given complete control over registration, validation and administration procedures.”
Chhattisgarh health minister T S Singh Deo had a pithy one-liner: “der aaye dusrust aaye” (better late than never). Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said he had written twice to the PM and the Union health minister for Central procurement and distribution of vaccines for all age groups. “This was the only feasible solution,” he said.
Against BJP’s vaccine but will take government of India’s vaccine: Akhilesh Yadav on policy change
LUCKNOW: Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday welcomed the Centre’s decision to provide free vaccines to states for all above 18 years starting June 21, and asked people to get themselves vaccinated.
The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister also said that he would get himself vaccinated.
“Seeing the public outrage, the government instead of politicising the corona vaccine announced that it would give the vaccines doses. We were against the BJP’s vaccine but welcome the vaccine of ‘Government of India’. I will also get vaccinated. I appeal to those who could not get vaccinated for the lack of vaccines to do so,” he said in a tweet in Hindi.
In an address to the nation on Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced that the central government will provide free vaccines to states for all above 18 years starting June 21.
When the coronavirus vaccine was launched in January, Yadav had sought to know from the government how the drive will be conducted and when the poor will get the shot free of cost.
The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister had said he has faith in doctors of the country but not the government.
Yadav had also triggered a controversy, saying he will not get himself injected with a “BJP vaccine” against coronavirus.
“We have full faith in our doctors but not in the government. It is good that coronavirus vaccine has come out but only believe what the doctors say, not Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath,” he had said.
SP founder Mulayam Singh Yadav had got himself vaccinated at a private hospital here on Monday.
The BJP’s Uttar Pradesh unit had described it as a “good message”, and said SP workers and its president should take inspiration from him.
