Petrol hits record Rs 99.71/litre in Mumbai after another fuel price hike

Petrol price was increased by 23 paise per litre and diesel by 25 paise a litre, according to a price notification of state-owned fuel retailers.

The hike – 13th this month – pushed petrol and diesel prices to record-high levels across the country.

Petrol price in Delhi rose to Rs 93.44 a litre and diesel to Rs 84.32 a litre.  In Mumbai, petrol price climbed to Rs 99.71 a litre and diesel to Rs 91.57 per litre.

Rates had already crossed the Rs 100-mark in several cities in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra and with the latest increase, the price in Mumbai too was inching towards that level.

Fuel prices differ from state to state depending on the incidence of local taxes such as VAT and freight charges.

Rajasthan levies the highest value-added tax (VAT) on petrol in the country, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Oil companies revise rates of petrol and diesel daily based on average price of benchmark fuel in the international market in the preceding 15-days, and foreign exchange rates.

This is the 13th increase in prices since May 4, when the state-owned oil firms ended an 18-day hiatus in rate revision they observed during assembly elections in states like West Bengal.

Sri Ganganagar district of Rajasthan had the costliest petrol and diesel in the country at Rs 104.42 per litre and Rs 97.18 a litre, respectively.

In 13 increases, petrol price has risen by Rs 3.04 per litre and diesel by Rs 3.59.

Reputed hospital ward boy held 8 Remdesivir Vials seized

The West Division police of KP Agrahara police on Monday arrested a ward boy of Victoria hospital for selling Remdesivir injections illegally in Blackmarketing charging exorbitant price.

Senior officer told media persons,as our KP Agrahara Inspector and staff were on patrolling and received a tip off by informant that a person is moving around a medical shop in 5th cross and is indulged in selling Remdesivir injections vials to people charging exorbitant price.

Acting on tip-off a team of police officials rushed to the spot and kept a close watch on the suspect and the accused was caught red handed offering Remdesivir injections to the people visiting the drug stores.

The team detained and brought to the police station for questioning during investigation it was revealed that the accused is a Juvenile and during search the team recovered a box containing eight bottles of injections from him.

Further Investigations revealed that he had stolen the box from the box of drugs being transported  in a lift at victoria hospital on May 13 to administer to the people who come to take the injections.

Surprisingly,the staff did not notice the missing medicine nor reported the matter to their seniors.

The accused a ward boy brought the stolen box with an intention to make quick money due to the demand.The accused has been taken into custody for further investigations.

The accused has been booked under Drug control Act and we have written to hospital seeking action on the incharge who has appointed a juvenile as a ward boy and further investigation is on he added.

In another incident on Monday the Baiyyapanahalli police arrested a nurse of a private hospital who was administering two people from a single vial and then pocketing the remaining vial to be sold later in black.

And the majority of the accused arrested so far in blackmarketing Remdesivir injection related to the hospital or pharma companies.

India records 1.96 lakh new COVID-19 cases, lowest in 41 days 3511 new deaths

NEW DELHI: The single day rise in new coronavirus infections in the country fell below 2 lakh taking the total tally of COVID-19 cases to 2,69,48,874, while the death toll rose to 3,07,231, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Tuesday.

A total of 1,96,427 new coronavirus infections were reported in a day, the lowest in around 41 days, while the death toll climbed to 3,07,231 with 3,511 fresh fatalities, the lowest in 21 days, the data updated at 8 am showed.

India had registered 1,84,372 new coronavirus infections on April 14.

The active cases have further reduced to 25,86,782 comprising 9.60 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has improved to 89.26 per cent.

The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 2,40,54,861, while the case fatality rate stands at 1.14 per cent, the data stated.

India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16.

It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19.

India crossed the grim milestone of 2 crore on May 4.

According to the ICMR, 33,25,94,176 samples have been tested up to May 24 with 20,58,112 samples being tested on Monday.

Jammu and Kashmir declares ‘Black Fungus’ as epidemic disease

SRINAGAR: The Lt Governor administration in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday declared Black Fungus (Mucormycosis) as an epidemic after a 40-year-old person succumbed to this infection and another suspected case is reportedly under treatment at Srinagar hospital. 

The notification has made it mandatory for all the private and government health institutions to report suspected and confirmed cases to the Health Department through District Level Chief Medical Officers and Integrated Disease Surveillance Program (IDSP).

“No person or institution or organization will spread information or material for management Mucormycosis without prior permission from Director Health Services Jammu/Kashmir,” reads the notification.

It further stated that no person, institution or organization would use any print/electronic or any other form of media for Mucormycosis without prior permission from Director Health Services Jammu/Kashmir.

The notification warned that any person, institution or organization disobeying the regulations or order issued under these Regulations shall be deemed to have committed an offence punishable under Section 188 of Indian Penal Code (45 of 1860).

It is all work and no pay for ASHA workers in Karnataka’s Kodagu

MADIKERI: “A villager is suspected to have been infected with Covid. The doctor will visit the area now and I have to ensure that the villager has given his throat swab for the test. I will then have to take the doctor on a tour around the village,” spoke an ASHA worker hurriedly over the phone.

“Many of us are dependent on the honorarium. They say that they have not been allotted money in the budget. We get a minimum amount of Rs 4,000; it hurts when this money too is not given to us on time,” shared the ASHA worker who is relentlessly involved in creating awareness and collecting data of Covid patients across Chettalli area in South Kodagu. 

She explains how she has become numb to the rude behavior of many residents; yet, continues with her work for a greater good.  

“We do not have any designated work timing. We sometimes start as early as 7 am and work between nine to 10 hours on busy days,” shared another ASHA worker from K Nidugane village limits. She alleged that the state has not even distributed masks to all the ASHA workers.

“Recently, a person donated a safety kit and just a few days ago we were handed over with a face shield and a mask,” said the worker from Chettalli limits.

The ASHA workers said they find it difficult to commute from rural areas to the PHC for any general meetings due to the absence of transport facilities. 

“We cannot even hitchhike as not a single vehicle will stop for us after seeing us in the uniform. We are faced with numerous such problems,” they further said.

“Each time we question the authorities concerned about the salary, we are told that it will be credited soon. We have been hearing this for last three months,” they added.

Puma comes forward with sponsorship after Zimbabwe cricketer posts photo of worn-out shoes

HARARE: Sportsgear brand Puma came forward with a sponsorship deal after Zimbabwe batsman Ryan Burl requested for sponsorships for the national team, posting a photo of worn-out shoes to highlight the plight of his country’s cricket.

The 27-year-old Burl, a left-handed middle-order batsman who has played three Tests, 18 ODIs and 25 T20Is, tweeted a picture of his shoe, a glue stick and some tools to fix it. “Any chance we can get a sponsor so we don’t have to glue our shoes back after every series,” Burl asked in a tweet at a time when some of the cricket boards are earning millions from sponsorships alone

“Time to put the glue away, I got you covered,” said Puma retweeting Ryan’s post, indicating that the sports apparel brand is ready to sponsor the kits for Zimbabwe’s cricket team.

Confirming the sponsorship deal, Ryan thanked the Twitter community for extending support. “I am so proud to announce that I’ll be joining the @pumacricket team. This is all due to the help and support from the fans over the last 24 hours,” he tweeted.

World Test Championship final: Shubman Gill focussed on playing sessions on his first UK tour

Gill, who will be going for his first tour of England with the senior team, is undergoing a 14-day quarantine in Mumbai along with the rest of the squad.

He did not have the best of times in the home series against England and he is looking to make amends starting with the WTC final against New Zealand from June 18.

“We did well in Australia. We have been playing well overseas and I feel we can’t be better prepared for this final. As an opener, I feel you should be able to play session by session not just in England, overseas in general,” said Gill.

“It is very important to play session by session. In England whenever there is cloud around, the ball swings more and when the sun is out, it gets easier to bat. It is important to assess those conditions as an opener,” he said.

Talking about the quarantine protocols in COVID times, he said: “It is very hard, you are in a room for 14 days there is not much to do. We are given workout schedules, we do that. We try to keep ourselves busy watching movies and spend some time on the I-pad but it is very hard.”

Gill has been with the Test squad since 2019 but got his big break with the Boxing Day Test at the MCG in December. Asked about time spent in the team and interactions with skipper Virat Kohli and opener partner Rohit Sharma, he added: “Virat bhai tells me to play fearlessly whenever we speak about the game.”

Having played seven Tests so far, he speaks about mindset a lot.” …..that you have to be in good frame of mind when you go out to bat and shares his experiences. And when I am batting with Rohit bhai, we usually discuss where the bowlers will bowl, what the situation is like, depending on that, when to take risk or not,” he said.
