UK records 122,186 COVID cases amid ‘glimmer of Christmas hope’

December 25, 2021 by Nasheman

LONDON: The UK on Friday recorded another daily COVID-19 infection high at 122,186, up from 119,789 cases the previous day, as experts pointed to a “glimmer of Christmas hope” after studies showed that the Omicron variant is much less severe than the previously dominant Delta variant.

In additional data released by the UK’s Office for National Statistics (ONS), 1.74 million people in the UK had coronavirus on December 19, up by more than 368,000 on the figure three days earlier.

This equates to 2.7 per cent of the population or one in 35 people.

In London, that figure is even higher at one in 20, driven by the rapidly transmissible Omicron variant.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), which released a detailed analysis of real world Omicron data on Thursday, said its findings offer some hope but the additional burden on the National Health Service (NHS) due to staff COVID positive tests continues to be a strain.

“There is a glimmer of Christmas hope. but it definitely isn’t yet at the point where we could downgrade that serious threat,” Dr Jenny Harries, UKHSA Chief Executive, told the BBC.

“What we have got now is a really fine balance between something that looks like a lower risk of hospitalisation, which is great news, but equally a highly transmissible variant and one that we know evades some of our immune defences, so it is a very balanced position,” she said.

The UKHSA estimates that someone with Omicron is between 31 per cent and 45 per cent less likely to attend A&E and 50 per cent to 70 per cent less likely to be admitted to hospital than an individual with the Delta variant.

However, Dr Harries warned there was much that is still unknown about Omicron.

“We don’t yet know what the average length of stay for an individual is in a hospital,” she said.

“We’re not seeing very significant rises in intensive care utilisation or in the use of ventilation beds. Now that may be because a lot of the people who’ve been infected to date are actually younger people and we will see that coming through,” she added.

But if the severity of the disease is actually “significantly lower than Delta” then some of the impact on the NHS may be less severe, she admitted.

The UKHSA analysis, along with the data gathered around Omicron on a daily basis, will influence the UK government’s decision regarding whether or not further restrictions are needed in England.

At present, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has stuck to his Plan B measures for England, face masks, Covid passes and working from home guidance, with any new measures now expected only after Christmas next week.

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have all already announced tougher rules for nightclubs and other hospitality venues from Sunday to control gatherings and crowds.

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut hails Atal Bihari Vajpayee, says ‘Sabka saath, sabka vikas’ slogan suits him

December 25, 2021 by Nasheman

MUMBAI: Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut on Saturday hailed former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, saying that he was the only leader after Jawaharlal Nehru who was appreciated by people across the country, and added that the ‘Sabka saath, sabka vikas’ slogan truly suits him.

Speaking to reporters here, Raut said, “Atal Bihari Vajpayee played a pivotal role in cementing the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance. ‘Sabka saath, sabka vikas’ line truly suits him.”

The Sena MP was responding to a question related to Vajpayee on the late BJP leader’s birth anniversary.

“Vajpayee was the only second leader in India, who was appreciated across the country after Jawaharlal Nehru. May it be Nagaland or Puducherry, there were people who respected Vajpayee,” he said.

Vajpayee and Lal Krishna Advani were the two major pillars of the BJP, who helped the party spread across the country, Raut said.

Chinese officials face punishment over Covid outbreak in locked down city of Xi’an

December 25, 2021 by Nasheman

The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection said Friday that 26 Communist Party officials had been punished for ‘insufficient rigour in preventing and controlling the outbreak’.

BEIJING: Dozens of officials have been punished over a virus outbreak in the locked-down city of Xi’an, China’s disciplinary body said Friday, the latest state reprimands under Beijing’s strict zero-Covid approach.

China, where the coronavirus was first detected in late 2019, is on high alert for new infections as it prepares to hold the Winter Olympics in February in the capital Beijing.

The world’s most populous nation has reduced cases to a minimum thanks to a zero-Covid strategy of tight border restrictions, lengthy quarantines and targeted lockdowns.

But cases have been bubbling up in recent weeks with Xi’an, home to the world-famous Terracotta Warriors, telling all 13 million residents to stay home from Thursday, shuttering businesses and launching several rounds of mass testing.

The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection said Friday that 26 Communist Party officials had been punished for “insufficient rigour in preventing and controlling the outbreak”.

Xi’an reported another 49 cases on Friday, bringing the total outbreak to more than 250 in recent weeks.

Chinese officials who are deemed to have failed at controlling the virus in their region are regularly sacked or reprimanded.

The statement said inspections had revealed there had been a lax approach to testing and an uncoordinated response that hindered contact tracing in Xi’an.

Authorities would clamp down on “bureaucratic issues in disease control work such as shirking responsibility, not taking action, passing the buck and dealing with things in a negative way”, a Party discipline official said.

A party secretary in Inner Mongolia was sacked after his area was hit by a cluster of cases in October, while the head of Zhengzhou city’s health commission was sacked in August after cases this summer.

Cases from Xi’an have so far spread to five other cities including Beijing, according to state media — fuelling fears about how quickly the virus can spread geographically across the vast country.

Under lockdown rules, since Thursday all households in Xi’an have only been permitted to send one member outside every two days to purchase necessities.

Residents who want to leave the city must first apply for approval, while major venues including the museum housing the Terracotta Army the mausoleum of China’s first emperor — have been shut until further notice.

Scent of money leads I-T to Rs 150 corer cash in Kanpur

December 25, 2021 by Nasheman

Officials keep a track of the unaccounted money in Kanpur.

LUCKNOW: Wads of currency worth Rs 150 crore were confiscated so far during Income Tax raids at the premises of Kanpur businessman Piyush Jain on Friday.

The I-T raids, which commenced on Thursday, are still underway at various premises including the house, office, factory, cold store, and petrol pump of Jain in Kanpur, Kannauj, Mumbai, and Gujarat.

The raids were initially conducted by GST officials on the charge of tax evasion but later drew in I-T sleuths also as more details about the unaccounted wealth amassed by the trader started surfacing.

Jain, a perfume trader and the manufacturer of pan masala, is believed to be close to Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav. Jain had manufactured a perfume launched by Akhilesh a couple of months back.

Visuals of Jain’s wealth and the raids underway showed note-counting machines scattered on the floor, surrounded by wads of cash bundled in plastic and tape.

Piyush Jain, basically belongs to Chhipatti in Kannauj where he has a residence, a perfume factory, cold store and a petrol pump.

UP BJP spokesperson Rakesh Tripathi accused the SP of allegedly getting “help from corrupt people and goons”.

But, SP leader Anurag Bhadouria tweeted that Jain was affiliated to the BJP and that the SP had nothing to do with this friend of the BJP, nor his perfume.

English Press Release and Photograph of “CM to inaugurate special exhibition; faithful gear up for a green Christmas”.

December 24, 2021 by Nasheman

Some of the reliefs designed by Church Art depicting St Francis of Assisi the Patron Saint of Environment and the originator of the tradition of cribs on Christmas Eve that would be put up at the special exhibition at The Cathedral of the Most Holy Rosary in Kolkata. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee would inaugurate the exhibition on the Eve of Xmas.=============================================================

Kolkata: The Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee will inaugurate a special exhibition on the various pictures of St. Francis of Assisi – the Patron Saint of Environment and the originator of the tradition of cribs – on Christmas eve. These pictorial displays, conceptualised by Church Art, would be installed in the Cathedral premises to inspire and motivate people to love and protect Mother Earth.

“This year, as Christians heed to the call of green Christmas, tradition recalls a Catholic saint who returned to nature by promoting “presepio vivente” – a living crib. A crib, is a depiction of the birth of Jesus as described in the gospels of Matthew and Luke. The origin of the Christmas Crib or Manger or Nativity scene is often first ascribed to Saint Francis of Assisi, who, in 1223 AD, celebrated the `Feast of the Nativity’ in a new way that led to a new devotional practice popular even today,” said Fr Franklin Menzes, Parish Priest of The Cathedral of the Most Holy Rosary, Burrabazar. The Cathedral was founded on 1799.

“Nativity scenes exhibit figures representing the infant Jesus, his mother Mary, and Joseph. Other characters from the nativity story such as shepherds, the Magi, and angels may be displayed near the manger. Distinctive nativity scenes and traditions have been created around the world and are displayed during the Christmas season in churches, homes, shopping malls, and other venues, and occasionally on public places and in public buildings,” said Fr Dominic Gomes, Vicar General, Archdiocese of Calcutta.

The Vatican has displayed a scene in St. Peter’s Square near its Christmas tree since 1982 and the Pope has for many years blessed the mangers of children assembled in St. Peter’s Square for a special ceremony. In 2015, the first ever crib set depicting Jesus’ birth from India, designed by Kolkata-based organization Church Art, was added to the International Nativity Museum of Bethlehem’s collection of 223 nativity representations from over 93 countries.

The International Nativity Museum in Bethlehem, a UNESCO Heritage Site, is currently located close to the Church of Bethlehem which is considered to be the spot where Jesus was born. Local lore passed down from ancient times holds that the three travelers or Magi who were guided by a star had passed through this path where the International Nativity Museum now stands.

History tells us that St. Francis of Assisi was inspired by his visit to the Holy Land in 1219 where he had been shown Jesus’s traditional birthplace. It was in 1223 that the first crèche was celebrated in the woods of Greccio near Assisi, on Christmas Eve.

It is reported that Francis commissioned a local holy man by the name Giovanni (John) Velitta, about two weeks before Christmas to enact the memory of the Infant who was born at Bethlehem and how He was bedded in the manger on hay between a donkey and an ox. The good and faithful Giovanni departed quickly and prepared everything. The crib was ready, hay was brought, the ox and the donkey were led to the spot. Greccio became a new Bethlehem. The crowds gathered and rejoiced in the celebration.

As the villagers and friars crowded around, a priest began the Mass. Francis sang the Gospel in a sonorous voice and preached to the people who had bought candles and torches to brighten the night.

St. Francis’ idea of bringing Bethlehem into one’s own town spread quickly all over the Christian world, and soon after death of Francis in 1226 there were Christmas cribs in churches and homes. The home crib became popular in Catholic Europe after 1600, owing, it is said, to the efforts of the Capuchins.

Authored Article: COLORECTAL CANCER: Causes, Symptoms Treatment

December 24, 2021 by Nasheman

Dr. B.S Ankit Nehra, Consultant Medical Oncology, HCG Cancer Centre, Jaipur

Colorectal cancer is the fifth-most common cancer in India.  It refers to cancer of large intestine. Usual age of development of this cancer is sixty years and above. However, in developing countries including India there has been an increase in incidence among younger people. Current literature suggests that most of the patients diagnosed under the age of 50 are symptomatic at diagnosis and associated with more advanced stage at diagnosis & poorer outcomes.

Consumption of high caloric diet, red meat & high saturated fats, excess alcohol intake, cigarette smoking, sedentary lifestyle, obesity, and diabetes are known risk factors of colorectal cancer.

Blood or mucus in the stools, an unexplained change in bowel habits with prolonged diarrhea or constipation, loss of appetite, unexplained weight loss, excessive gas, abdominal cramps, and abdominal pain could be few of the indicators of colorectal cancer.

The cancer can be diagnosed with the help of physical examination by a medical professional, abdominal imaging (Ultrasonography, CT scan or MRI Scan), serum CEA level, colonoscopy, fecal test, and biopsy.

Colorectal cancer can be treated using a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy in localized stage. In advanced stage, use of targeted therapy and immunotherapy along with chemotherapy have shown longer survival and better quality of life.

Since most cases tend to develop symptoms at later stages, it is advisable to do timely screening and diagnosis. Screening of asymptomatic individuals for colorectal cancer is advocated by major societies and preventive care organizations.

Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT), Fecal Immunochemical test (FIT) and Colonoscopy are methods of screening. Every adult should undergo screening fecal test and colonoscopy at regular interval from the age of 50 years. Adults with family history or known hereditary cause should undergo screening at earlier age depending on risk. Screening has been shown to detect asymptomatic cancer at early stage and can be treated successfully with less aggressive treatment and good outcomes.
