Complaint in Bihar court against BJP’s Nupur Sharma, others

June 11, 2022 by Nasheman

Muzaffarpur (Bihar): A complaint was on Friday filed at a court here against suspended BJP spokespersons Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal who were in news for their derogatory statements against Prophet Mohammad.

The petition was filed before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court by social activist M Raju Naiyer who has also named as a co-accused religious leader Swami Yati Narsinghanand whose similar incendiary statement has gone viral on the social media.

In the petition, filed through Naiyer’s advocate Manoj Singh, it has been alleged that the statements of Sharma, Jindal and Narsinghanand could trigger communal violence.

The petition, which seeks action against the accused under several IPC sections, is likely to be taken up for hearing on June 21.

Sharma who made an objectionable statement about the Prophet during a TV debate on the Gyanvapi controversy, and Jindal, who posted a derogatory remark on his Twitter handle, were suspended by the party after many Islamic countries raised objections to their utterances.

Both have been booked by the police in places like Delhi and Mumbai.

Narsinghanand, not formally associated with the party but known to be sympathetic towards the Sangh Parivar ideology, was arrested earlier this year for making offensive remarks against Muslims and women at a public function.

He has also been named in an FIR lodged at Delhi in connection with the objectionable remarks about the Prophet.

Miscreants hang effigy of suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma in Belagavi

June 11, 2022 by Nasheman

Belagavi: Miscreants on Friday hanged an effigy of suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma from an electric wire resembling a public execution near a mosque on Fort Road, police said.

As the issue triggered a public outrage, police along with the city municipal corporation removed it quickly, they added.

The police have registered a case against unknown miscreants for spreading enmity between communities and disturbing peace in the society.

The BJP on June 5 suspended Sharma and expelled its Delhi unit media head Naveen Kumar Jindal as the row over their alleged derogatory remarks against Prophet Mohammad escalated with protests from some Muslim countries.

Prophet row: Violence in UP and Jharkhand; shutdown in parts of Kashmir

June 11, 2022 by Nasheman

In the national capital, protests erupted outside the Jama Masjid soon after Friday prayers with hundreds of people demanding the arrest of suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma for her controversial remarks. People gathered on the steps of the historical mosque, carrying placards and shouting slogans. There was heavy police deployment to manage the situation.

Meanwhile, several parts of Kashmir witnessed spontaneous shutdown and protests against the controversial remarks. Authorities imposed curfew in communally sensitive Bhaderwah area of Jammu province and suspended mobile services in many parts of J&K. The shutdown was spontaneous as no political or religious group had called for any protest. As a precautionary measure, authorities disallowed Friday prayers at historic Jamia Masjid in downtown Srinagar.

In Jharkhand capital Ranchi, the district administration imposed a curfew. People raised slogans and threw stones in UP’s Prayagraj. In Navi Mumbai, at least 3,000 protesters, including around 1,000 women, took out a protest march. Protest gatherings or marches were also held in Thane, Aurangabad, Solapur, Nandurbar, Parbhani, Beed, Latur, Bhandara, Chandrapur and Pune districts of Maharashtra.

Maharashtra RS polls: BJP bags 3 of 6 seats in major setback for ruling Sena-NCP-Congress alliance

June 11, 2022 by Nasheman

MUMBAI: In a major setback to Maharashtra’s ruling alliance of Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress, the BJP on Saturday won three of the six Rajya Sabha seats in the state, even as the ruling combine questioned the eight-hour delay in counting of votes.

The winners include BJP candidates Union minister Piyush Goyal and former state minister Anil Bonde and Dhananjay Mahadik. Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Raut, NCP’s Praful Patel and Congress’ Imran Pratapgarhi also won the fiercely-fought elections.

The contest was for the sixth seat the BJP had fielded former MP Dhananjay Mahadik and the Shiv Sena candidate was Sanjay Pawar, who lost. Mahadik and Pawar hail from Kolhapur in western Maharashtra.

The high-stake battle for the sixth turned out to be a nail-biting affair with the Congress and BJP trading charges, even approaching the Election Commission.

“Elections are contested not just for the fight, but the victory. Jai Maharashtra,” tweeted BJP’s Devendra Fadnavis, whose refusal to have consensus candidates for the Rajya Sabha led to elections in the state after 23 years.

The counting of votes started after an eight-hour delay amid complaints of cross-voting and rules violations by the BJP and the ruling alliance. Both BJP and the Shiv Sena approached the Election Commission, alleging cross-voting and seeking disqualification of votes.be poll panel directed the Rajya Sabha election returning officer of Maharashtra to reject the vote cast by Shiv Sena legislator Suhas Kande, after which the counting of votes got underway.

Crude oil imports may figure in India-Iran talks

June 9, 2022 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI: Days after Iran summoned India’s envoy to protest a former BJP spokesperson’s remarks on the Prophet, the country’s foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian reached New Delhi on a four-day visit to India.

According to sources, import of crude oil from Iran could figure in the talks between Abdollahian and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday.  Speaking at Globsec 2022 in Bratislava just days ago, Jaishankar had said that if the US and Europe wanted countries to limit imports from Russia, they should consider putting Iran and Venezuela on the table for imports. Iran’s petroleum  output has increased to I million barrels per day and it is seeking other markets, which were blocked after US imposed sanctions on them. India was the second biggest buyer of Iranian oil after China before sanctions were imposed in 2019.

Meanwhile, a pact was signed on Wednesday between India and Iran on mutual legal assistance in civil and commercial matters. It is learnt that Iran is also inte  rested in a rupee-rial trade mechanism with India. The bilateral trade between the two countries during 2020-21 was $2.10 billion, a 56%  decline compared to the previous year of $4.80 billion. This has been attributed to the pandemic and is likely to pick up this year. If oil imports are okayed, this figure will shoot up.

While India exports rice, tea, sugar and fresh fruits, pharmaceuticals, machinery, jewellery to Iran, imports include dry fruits, chemical glass, semiprecious stone and leather. Expanding trade via Chabahar port to Afghanistan and Central Asia and Eurasia are also expected to be discussed during the talks, besides the situation in  Afghanistan and Ukraine,  said sources. Abdollahian is also scheduled to visit Mumbai and Hyderabad.

Iranian foreign minister meets PM Modi
Relations between India and Iran have benefited both the countries and have promoted regional security and prosperity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said after Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian called on him on Wednesday.
