Samajwadi Party stares at future without guidance of party patriarch

October 11, 2022 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI:  With the demise of its patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav, the Samajwadi Party has lost the single unifying force that had kept the ranks and files of the party and the family together except a few rumblings when the feud between his son Akhilesh Yadav and younger brother Shivpal intensified, leading the latter to part ways and float his own outfit. Moreover, with dominant political ambitions, younger daughter-in-law Aparna Yadav too changed the track and joined the saffron bandwagon just ahead of the 2022 Assembly election

Now, Akhilesh has the bigger responsibility of keeping his flock intact while ensuring the restoring party’s pride which it used to enjoy under his father. The demise of ‘Netaji’ has left Yadav exposed to the vagaries of politics with no one around to give fatherly advice when situations will demand.

Life at a glance

The veteran Samajwadi leader was born to Murti Devi and Sughar Singh Yadav on 22 November 1939 in Saifai village, Etawah district, Uttar Pradesh.

He married twice. His first wife was Malti Devi who died in 2003 after a prolonged medical illness. Former Uttar Pradesh CM, Akhilesh Yadav is the only child of Mulayam Singh Yadav from his first wife Malati Devi.

Mulayam in many ways was regarded as a protege of socialist icon Ram Manohar Lohia who played a key role in grooming him

He founded the Samajwadi Party in 1992.

He was elected Member of the Legislative Assembly, Uttar Pradesh 10 times

He was elected member of Lok Sabha on 7 occasions between 1996 and 2019

Netaji served as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for the terms from 1989 to 1991, 1993 to 1995, and 2003 to 2007.

He also served as Minister of Defence in the Government of India during 1996-98.

He currently represents the Mainpuri constituency in the Lok Sabha.

He is survived by two sons Akhilesh Yadav and Prateek Yadav

Two Pakistani fishermen apprehended by BSF off Gujarat coast

October 11, 2022 by Nasheman

AHMEDABAD: The Border Security Force has apprehended two Pakistani fishermen from a creek area near the India-Pakistan border off the Kutch district coast in Gujarat, the BSF said on Tuesday,

The Air Force Station at Nalia in the district which continuously monitors the situation noticed a movement of six fishing boats along with fishermen in the general area of Harami Nala using an unmanned aerial vehicle at 11.40 am on Monday.

It alerted about the movement to the Bhuj BSF which immediately launched a special operation in the area, the BSF said in a statement.

“The Bhuj BSF immediately launched a special operation in the Harami Nala area spread over 900 sq km. So far, the BSF troops have apprehended two Pakistani fishermen and the operation is in progress,” it said.

The fishermen have been identified as Yasin Sheikh (35) and Mohammad Sheikh (25), both residents of a village near the Zero Point area in Sujawal district of Pakistan, the BSF said.

The BSF had on August 5 apprehended a Pakistani fisherman and seized five boats from the same area.

While Indian fishermen are barred from entering the creek due to security reasons, those from Pakistan many a time enter the Indian waters in search of a better catch.

Ukraine denounces Russia as ‘terrorist state’ at UN meet after airstrikes

October 11, 2022 by Nasheman

UNITED NATIONS: Ukraine denounced Russia as a “terrorist state” at an urgent United Nations General Assembly meeting Monday following its neighbour’s latest attacks, as Western powers sought to underscore Moscow’s isolation.

The UN called the debate to discuss Russia’s declared annexation of four partly occupied Ukrainian regions, but the debate was overshadowed by strikes on Kyiv and other cities in one of the most punishing assaults on Ukraine in months.

“Russia has proven once again that this is a terrorist state that must be deterred in the strongest possible ways,” said Sergiy Kyslytsya, Ukraine’s ambassador to the UN in his opening remarks, adding his own immediate family had come under attack.

“Unfortunately, you can hardly call for a stable and sane peace as long as an unstable and insane dictatorship exists in your vicinity,” he added, telling member states at least 14 civilians were killed and 97 wounded in the attacks.

Responding, Vasily Nebenzya of Russia did not directly address the missile strikes but defended his country’s annexation of Ukrainian regions.

“We are being accused when we are trying to protect our brothers and sisters in eastern Ukraine,” he said.

Ahead of the General Assembly session, and with tensions at a boiling point, UN chief Antonio Guterres described Russia’s attacks as an “unacceptable escalation of the war,” his spokesman said.

US President Joe Biden, meanwhile, condemned the strikes in stark terms, saying they “demonstrate the utter brutality” of Putin’s “illegal war.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed even more “severe” retaliation after the recent explosion that damaged a key bridge in Moscow-annexed Crimea.

– ‘Illegal annexations’ –

The decision to bring the annexation matter before the General Assembly, where the 193 UN members have one vote each — and no one wields veto power — was taken after Russia used its veto in a Security Council meeting September 30 to block a similar proposal.

The vote is expected no sooner than Wednesday.

“We do not and will never recognise the illegal so-called ‘referenda’ that Russia has engineered as a pretext for this further violation of Ukraine’s independence,” said Silvio Gonzato, a representative of the European Union, which helped draft the text.

The resolution condemns Russia’s “attempted illegal annexations” of the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson following “so-called referendums,” and it stresses these actions have “no validity under international law.”

It calls on all states, international organizations and agencies not to recognize the annexations, and demands the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine.

In response to the resolution, Russia had written to all member states in a letter attacking “Western delegations” whose actions “have nothing to do with the protection of international law and the principles of the UN Charter.”

Nebenzya said that given the circumstances, the General Assembly should vote by secret ballot — a highly unusual procedure normally reserved for matters like electing the rotating members of the Security Council.

– ‘A bit of desperation’ –

But Albania tabled a resolution against a secret ballot, winning with 107 votes in favour, 13 against, and 39 abstentions. Russia lost a subsequent appeal to the motion.

Guterres himself has bluntly denounced the annexations as being “against everything the international community is meant to stand for,” he said.

“It has no place in the modern world. It must not be accepted.”

During last month’s Security Council vote, no other country sided with Russia, though four delegations — China, India, Brazil and Gabon — abstained.

Some developing countries have complained the West is devoting all its attention to Ukraine, and others might be tempted to join them this week.

The vote will provide a clear picture of exactly how isolated Russia has become. Given the high stakes, backers of the draft are going all out to win over potential abstentionists.

On Monday, Ukrainian diplomat Dmytro Kuleba issued a plea to African nations, telling them: “Neutrality will only encourage Russia to continue its aggression and malign activities across the world, including in Africa.”

Sena-vs-Sena: Election Commission seeks Uddhav’s response

October 8, 2022 by Nasheman

MUMBAI: The Election Commission has asked the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena to submit the requisite papers by Saturday noon to prove itself as the real Sena. Anil Desai, who belongs to the Thackeray faction, said the party would respond within the stipulated time. The ECI move came following the announcement of a by-election to the Andheri-East seat on November 3

The Uddhav faction had sought 15 days to submit its reply, saying it was yet to receive a copy of the rival group’s claim. However, the ECI refused to grant more time, saying it had given the Uddhav group the required copy of the counter-claim on October 4. According to the ECI, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has claimed the Shiv Sena’s party symbol — bow and arrow — and submitted relevant documents.

The ECI in its letter to Uddhav stated that Chirag Shah, advocate on Shinde’s behalf, had submitted the application under paragraph 18 of Elections Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) order 1968. If Thackeray fails to submit the documents on time, the ECI will take its own decision over this dispute, it said. The Shinde group’s documents to the ECI claim the support of 40 Shiv Sena MLAs out of the total 56, plus 12 Lok Sabha MPs of the party out of 19. It also claims to have 1.66 lakh primary members of the party to justify its claim over the poll symbol.

However, the Uddhav faction has claimed that it has over 70 per cent representative members of the party on its side. As per the Shiv Sena’s constitution, this representative body has a major say in the party’s decision-making. It said out of 260 members, 160 of the representative body are with the Uddhav-led faction. It also claims that over 10 lakh official members of Shiv Sena have given affidavits of their support.

The Shinde group has extended its support to BJP candidate Urji Patel in Andheri East assembly bypoll. However, in its submission with the ECI, it says the group will contest the Andheri East seat, and therefore, will need the party symbol. Thus the Shinde move appears aimed at either freezing the party symbol for the Uddhav-led Sena before the by-election or claim it permanently. In both cases, Uddhav’s candidate for the by-election will have to use a different symbol.

Gulabrao Patil, a Shinde group minister, expressed confidence that the group would get the ‘bow and arrow’ symbol. He said the crowd at the faction’s Dussehra rally proved who the real Shiv Sena is.
“In a democracy the numbers are important and at present, we have the numbers. The ECI cannot ignore the majority support that we have,” Patil said.

Anil Desai, Shiv Sena’s Rajya Sabha member, said as per documents and the party constitution, the Uddhav-led faction is the real Shiv Sena. “We have regularly submitted documents in our support. The ECI can work out of the framework of the constitutional guidelines. The ECI is an independent body so it has to follow the conventions and law,” Desai said.

The Uddhav group has also argued that Shinde left the party voluntarily, so he cannot claim to represent the real  Shiv Sena. “It is unfortunate that Balasaheb Thackeray’s son, who is the president of the party, has to prove that his faction is a real Shiv Sena,” said a party leader.

‘No one has told us not to buy oil from Russia’: Hardeep Singh Puri

October 8, 2022 by Nasheman

WASHINGTON: The Indian government has a moral duty to provide energy to its citizens and it will continue to buy oil from wherever it has to, Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri said on Friday, asserting that no country has told India to stop buying oil from Russia.

The Russia-Ukraine war has had a far-reaching impact on the global energy system, disrupting supply and demand patterns and fracturing long-standing trading relationships.

It has pushed up energy prices for many consumers and businesses around the world, hurting households, industries and entire economies of several nations.

India’s crude oil imports from Russia have jumped over 50 times since April and now it makes up for 10 per cent of all crude bought from overseas.

Russian oil made up for just 0.2 per cent of all oil imported by India prior to the Ukraine war.

The Western countries are gradually bringing down their energy purchases from Russia following its attack on Ukraine.

“India will buy oil from wherever it has to for the simple reason that this kind of a discussion cannot be taken to the consuming population of India,” Puri told a group of Indian reporters here, adding that the government has a moral duty to provide energy to its people.

Responding to a question, he said India has not been told by anyone to stop buying oil from Russia.

“If you are clear about your policy, which means you believe in energy security and energy affordability, you will buy from wherever you have to purchase energy from sources,” Puri said after his bilateral meeting with US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm.

During his meeting, Puri “broached the idea” of India-US Green Corridor, which elicited a positive response from his US counterpart.

“The turbulence in the energy markets, and I’m using the word turbulence support carefully, will not allow India’s resolve to transition to green clean and sustainable energy,” he said.

The two countries would now look into broader contours of this ambitious Green Energy Corridor.

India’s import from the US is shooting up and currently buying USD20 billion worth of energy from the United States.

There are discussions on buying more from the United States, he said.

While work on green energy would continue, traditional exploration and production of oil and gas would continue as well, he noted.

The world is also in progress on green hydrogen. India and the US have an advantage which at present is not being realised, he added.

‘American dream gone wrong’, says wife of Indian-origin Sikh man killed in US

October 8, 2022 by Nasheman

SAN FRANCISCO: “This is the story of our American dream gone wrong,” the grieving wife of an Indian-origin Sikh man killed along with three members of his brother’s family, including an 8-month-old baby, has said

Bodies of 36-year-old Jasdeep Singh, 27-year-old Jasleen Kaur, their eight-month-old child Aroohi Dheri and the baby’s uncle, 39-year-old Amandeep Singh were found on Wednesday evening in an orchard after they were kidnapped on Monday.

The family, originally from Harsi Pind in Hoshiarpur, Punjab, was kidnapped at a business in Merced County, California.

Jaspreet Kaur, Amandeep’s widow, said in a GoFundMe fundraiser that her husband and his brother had been in the United States for 18 years and supported not only their families in California but also their elderly parents back in India.

“This is the story of our shared American dream gone wrong,” she wrote.

“Our loving family was violently taken away from us on October 3rd,” the family’s ‘gofundme’ page said.

Kaur said her husband routinely donated food to the local food bank and never missed Sunday service in the local Sikh temple.

They had a 9-year-old daughter and an 8-year-old son.

The family’s ‘gofundme’ page said the two brothers were “the primary bread earners for the family (and) supported their elderly parents.” Jaspreet has organised this fundraiser.

The suspect in the killing of the Sikh family has been arrested.

He once worked for the family’s trucking business and had a longstanding dispute with them that got “pretty nasty” and culminated in an act of senseless killing, authorities and a relative said.

Authorities said they were kidnapped from the family’s trucking business in the central California city of Merced, and parts of the kidnapping were captured on surveillance video.

Jesus Manuel Salgado, 48, was formally arrested late on Thursday on four counts of murder and four counts of kidnapping in the case, Merced County sheriff’s spokesperson Alexandra Britton said.

The city of Merced has also organised a candlelight vigil for the family every night at 7 pm from October 6 to October 9.

‘Talk less, listen more’ is Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra mantra

October 8, 2022 by Nasheman

NAGAMANGALA (MANDYA): Throwing away all netagiri, former AICC president Rahul Gandhi has hit the road with one concept: Talk less, listen more. During the course of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, Rahul is mixing with people, giving a patient hearing to those who want to talk about problems, and humbly requesting them to suggest solutions too.

During an interaction with this correspondent over a 3-km long walk, he reversed the question-answer session, seeking details on a variety of issues and challenges facing different segments of society, especially farmers. The Congress icon has been interacting with people to know their grievances, besides the region’s core social and political problems.

As the yatra passed through the sugar bowl of Mandya, Rahul Gandhi got some in-depth knowledge on the agrarian realities. When he sought to know why farmers had not taken up agriculture activities, they told him they were helpless as many who had grown horticulture crops like tomato, brinjal, beans and others crops, had suffered from a crash in prices. With their pockets empty, and little support from banks, they couldn’t invest in their farms again.

When told that farmers were happy with the loan waiver implemented by the Siddaramaiah government, a jovial Rahul said he was the force behind the waiver and other welfare programmes, but the people were not aware of it. He was curious to know about the family and agricultural background of this correspondent, besides agro economics.

Rahul said the BJP is making all attempts to weaken the Constitution and change it, and that he wanted to wake up the people and sensitise them to the dangers of this exercise. “People should now decide and play a role on how the Constitution needs to be protected,” he said.

He threw back questions on the success of the BJP and its religious politics, and Dalits looking to the saffron party for positions. He questioned why a section of educated Dalits was turning to the saffron party, when the BJP is trying to take away their rights.

Expressing huge respect for former President K Narayanan, he said, “I have met him, he is incomparable, and always ensured that he followed the Constitution.” Rahul, who was curious about social ills and evils prevailing in modern times, felt a social boycott has great impact on children, and that belief in the Constitution and mutual respect can bring about positive change.

Having been on the yatra for weeks now, Rahul said right from Kanyakumari, through Kerala and Karnataka, he has perceived a “large river of people flowing”, and there is only faith, no hatred or anger in this river. Quoting Basavanna, he said that the social reformer had taught people not to hate anybody, treat others as you would treat yourself and also listen to them.

“These are the lessons I have imbibed in this yatra, while the present-day ideology of the government has divided the country,” he said. “The DNA and essence of this country is that we should not hate anybody, and treat others equally.”

Shibu Soren gets Delhi High Court notice in Lokpal case

October 8, 2022 by Nasheman

RANCHI:  The Delhi High Court on Friday issued notice to JMM patriarch and Rajya Sabha MP
Shibu Soren on Lokpal hearing, directing him to reply by November 10. The notice was issued after BJP MP Nishikant Dubey moved Delhi HC against the ex-parte decision passed in the matter and a stay on the ongoing hearing against Soren.

Justice Yashwant Varma had on September 12 passed the stay order following objections raised by Soren. The stay was granted after Soren challenged the proceedings in the disproportionate assets case involving him through a petition.

Dubey in the review petition filed by him, had accused Soren of misleading the court saying that he suppressed facts to secure reliefs. According to Dubey, the day the Delhi HC passed the order, Lokpal and he remained unrepresented before the court and he came to know about the judgment only through media reports, adding that Soren misled the court by stating that he had given an advance notice to him.

Taking cognizance of the review petition filed by Dubey, the court has fixed November 10 as the next date of hearing. “Hearing on the ongoing proceedings of Lokpal will be conducted on November 10. The honourable court has taken cognizance on the objections raised by me,” said Dubey.

Earlier, Dubey had filed a petition before the Lokpal against Shibu Soren for amassing disproportionate assets in his name as well as family members and others and demanded a CBI probe into the matter.
It was also mentioned in the complaint, filed on August 5, 2020, that Soren has amassed several commercial and residential properties in his and his family members’ names by adopting corrupt means by misusing the public exchequer in the State of Jharkhand.

As Congress chief, I will have remote control in my hand, says Kharge

October 8, 2022 by Nasheman

Mallikarjun Kharge

AHMEDABAD:  Senior Congress leader and candidate for the congress party’s presidential polls Mallikarjun Kharge began his multi-state tour in Ahmedabad on Friday, to gather support for his candidature in the Congress presidential poll, scheduled for October 17. Addressing a press conference in the city, he said that if he becomes the party president, he will not be remote-controlled and rather he will have the remote control in his hand.

Kharge said that there is no such thing like ‘remote control’ in Congress party unlike the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), where every president is selected through a ‘consensus’. Replying to a reporter’s question about the BJP’s claim that he would act as the “remote control” and “proxy” of Sonia Gandhi after being elected to the post, he said, “Decisions would be taken by our committee, elected members, working committee, and primary board. A lot of people say I am a remote control and work from behind. They say I will do what Sonia Gandhi says. There is no such thing as a remote control in Congress, people take decisions together. It is your thinking. A few people are creating this idea.”

He attacked the BJP for not having a culture of electing party president. “How many times has the Prime Minister taken initiative to hold the election for party president’s post? In fact, all the BJP presidents have been elected through consensus. Now, you yourself decide which party wields remote control?” he said.

He said that he would try his best to ensure that 50% of organisational posts are reserved for those below 50 years of age. He said if he becomes the party president, he would try to give representation to women, youth, Dalits, and backward classes at every level of the party, and also appeal to state units to fight polls unitedly. “I have jumped into the fray to save the ideology of my party, the ideology of Gandhi, Nehru and to strengthen the call for unity given by Sardar Patel,” he said.

Advocate of women, Dalit, OBC participation
Kharge said that if he becomes the party president, he would try to give representation to women, youth, Dalits, and backward classes at every level of the party, and also appeal to state units to fight polls unitedly. He also said that he would ensure workers below 50 get 50% party posts.
