Wanted to assassinate former Pak PM Imran Khan because “he was misleading the public,” says suspect

Wanted to assassinate former Pak PM Imran Khan because "he was misleading the public," says suspect

Islamabad: The man who attacked Imran Khan on Thursday during a political march in Punjab province said he tried to assassinate the former Pakistan prime minister because “he was misleading the public” and could not tolerate it.

Khan, 70, was injured when the unidentified gunman opened fire on the container-mounted-truck carrying him during his protest march, but he was out of danger in what his party claimed was an “assassination attempt.”

The incident occurred near Allahwala Chowk of Wazirabad town in Punjab when Khan, a cricketer-turned-politician, was leading the long march to Islamabad demanding early elections.

The gunman was immediately nabbed by security officers and workers of Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.

The clip of his confessional statement, which is now being circulated on local media, shows a man in his late twenties, sporting a dishevelled look.

“He (Imran) was misleading the people and I could not bear watching it. So I killed him attempted to kill him,” the suspect said in a video statement.

“I tried my best to kill him. I wanted to kill him (Khan) only and no one else,” he confessed.

The gunman admitted that he has was not affiliated to any political, religious or terror outfits.

He asserted that the idea to assassinate the PTI chief germinated after he announced the mega rally on October 28.

“I decided to kill him today. This idea came to me when Khan started his long march. I am alone and nobody is with me. I came on my motorbike and I parked the bike in the shop of my uncle,” he explained.

“I decided to kill him because when a call for prayer was given, songs were being played (from the container),” he added.

According to eyewitnesses, the gunman fired on the container-mounted truck carrying Khan from a close range.

They said one person has been arrested from the spot and police took him to an unknown location.

Video footage showed a PTI worker tackling the attacker from behind and trying to grab the gun of the attacker.

Ehtisam, who tackled the attacker, told the media that he forced the gun of the attacker downward and stopped further mayhem.

“If something tragic had happened to Khan in our area, then we all would have been ashamed,” he said, adding that he was sorry that he could not stop the gunman from firing the first shot.

ARY News, which is considered as a mouthpiece of Khan’s party, reported that he was out of danger.

Khan, who was ousted from power in April after losing a no-confidence vote in his leadership, has talked about a ‘threat letter’ from the US and claimed that it was part of a foreign conspiracy to remove him as he was not acceptable for following an independent foreign policy.

The US has bluntly rejected the allegations.

He has been demanding early elections and he is leading the long march towards Islamabad to force his demands.

The term of the National Assembly will end in August 2023 and fresh elections should be held within 60 days.

Vijay Mallya’s lawyer says he can’t establish contact with him, SC discharges him from case

Vijay Mallya's lawyer says he can't establish contact with him, SC discharges him from case

New Delhi: The lawyer of fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya on Thursday told the Supreme Court that he was not receiving any communication from him and sought to be discharged from the case as a counsel.

A bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and Hima Kohli allowed the discharge of advocate E C Agrawala from the case and asked him to furnish the e-mail ID of the liquor baron along with his present residential address in the United Kingdom to the apex court registry.

“Counsel seeking discharge the case because in spite of communication from his end, no instruction is forthcoming,” the bench said and asked the lawyer to follow the process of discharge.

Agrawala told the top court, “I want to be discharged from this matter as I am not receiving any instructions from my client. I am not able to establish contact with him. He is incommunicado for a long time.”

The top court discharged the lawyer from the two petitions filed by Mallya against the October 5, 2018 and September 13, 2019 orders of the Karnataka High Court directing him to pay Rs 3,101 crore to a consortium of banks.

In a separate case, on July 11, the top court had sentenced Mallya to four months in jail for contempt of court, and directed the Centre to secure the presence of the fugitive businessman who has been in the UK since 2016 to undergo the imprisonment.

The top court had said Mallya, 66, never showed any remorse nor tendered any apology for his conduct and adequate punishment must be imposed to maintain the majesty of the law.

The top court had also imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on Mallya, who was held guilty of committing contempt of court by the top court on May 9, 2017, for transferring USD 40 million to his children in violation of court orders.

According to the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971, a person may be punished with simple imprisonment of up to six months, or with a fine up to Rs 2,000, or both for contempt of court.

The top court had directed that Mallya and the beneficiaries under the said transactions relating to USD 40 million shall be bound to deposit the amount received along with interest at the rate of eight per cent per annum with the recovery officer concerned within four weeks.

It had said in case the amount is not deposited, the recovery officer concerned shall be entitled to take appropriate proceedings for recovery of money and the Government of India and all agencies concerned shall extend assistance and complete cooperation.

The top court had said that the fine shall be deposited in the apex court registry within four weeks and upon such deposit the amount shall be handed over to the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee.

It said in case the fine amount of Rs 2,000 is not deposited within the stipulated time, Mallya shall undergo a further sentence of two months.

The apex court said in spite of repeated opportunities afforded to Mallya, no submissions were advanced on his behalf either on the purging of contempt or on the quantum of punishment.

The transactions referred to in the judgement and order dated May 9, 2017 in terms of which the amount of USD 40 million was disbursed to the beneficiaries are held to be “void and inoperative”, the court had said.

It had noted that in its May 9, 2017 verdict, the apex court had found that the action on part of Mallya in disbursing the amount of USD 40 Million was against the “text and tenor” of orders passed by the Karnataka High Court and that the contemnor was guilty of contempt.

It had said the Government of India, including the Ministry of External Affairs and all other agencies or instrumentalities, shall carry out the directions issued by the court with due diligence and utmost expediency.

Mallya is an accused in a bank loan default matter of over Rs 9,000 crore involving his defunct Kingfisher Airlines.

The apex court had in 2020 dismissed Mallya’s plea seeking a review of the May 2017 verdict.

Mallya has been living in the United Kingdom since March 2016. He is on bail on an extradition warrant executed by Scotland Yard on April 18, 2017.

A consortium of lending banks led by State Bank of India had moved the apex court alleging that Mallya was not following the court orders on repayment of the loan which was then over Rs 9,000 crore.

Separately, Mallya has also challenged Karnataka High Court orders of October 5, 2018 and September 13, 2019.

The orders upheld the decision of the Debts Recovery Appellate Tribunal (DRAT), Bangalore to deposit Rs 3,101 crore as a precondition to hearing his appeal against a Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT) order.

The DRT Bangalore had on January 19, 2017 directed Mallya to pay Rs 6,203 crore with interest to a consortium of banks led by State Bank of India, who had lent money for now defunct Kingfisher Airlines.

Mallya challenged the order in 2018 before the DRAT, which dismissed the appeal for want of appearance and non-compliance of objections.

He again moved DRAT and filed an application seeking restoration of his appeal.

The DRAT, on March 28, 2018, directed Mallya to deposit Rs 3,101 crore on or before April 25, 2018 and observed that in case of failure in compliance, the appeal will be liable to be dismissed automatically.

Mallya then challenged the March 28, 2018 order before the High Court, which dismissed his appeal on October 5, 2018 and subsequently he knocked the door of the apex court.

Omar not to contest assembly polls if J-K's statehood not restored: Farooq Abdullah
National Conference president Farooq Abdullah

Srinagar: Omar Abdullah will not contest the assembly polls if the statehood is not restored to Jammu and Kashmir, National Conference president Farooq Abdullah said on Thursday.

“He (Omar Abdullah) has already said that he will not contest elections till statehood is restored to Jammu and Kashmir,” Farooq Abdullah told reporters in Budgam district.

He was responding to a question about speculation that Omar Abdullah would not contest the assembly elections.

Asked about the appointment of constituency incharges by National Conference on Wednesday, the Lok Sabha member said it was necessary that party workers become active.

“It was important that we appoint constituency incharges who will go among the people and look at their problems so that same can be addressed,” he added.

Farooq Abdullah dismissed suggestions that the constituency incharges named by National Conference would get the party mandate for assembly elections.

“People are making up a lot of things. If we start to respond to each and everything, how can we function then? No one is the MLA candidate. We will have talks about coalitions and also about PAGD,” he said.

The former chief minister said the elections in Jammu and Kashmir were still some time away.

“There is time in conduct of the elections. What combinations emerge will be seen at that time only,” he said.

Karnataka cabinet approves installation of tracking device for all transport vehicles

November 4, 2022 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: The Karnataka Cabinet on Thursday gave its approval to installation of location tracking devices and emergency panic buttons for all public and private transport vehicles, aimed at safety of passengers.

This project is being implemented in partnership with the central government. The union government will give 60 per cent funds and the state 40 per cent.

Noting that the cabinet has given administrative approval of Rs 20.36 crore for this project, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister J C Madhuswamy said a total of 6.8 lakh vehicles, both government and private, will be covered under this, and they will be monitored from a central location once installation is completed.

Speaking to reporters after the cabinet meeting, he said, “On national highways and state highways, vehicles move very fast causing accidents. GPRS devices based on the vehicle location tracking system (VLTS) will be able to track speed and determine whether or not vehicles stop at prescribed locations and follow the scheduled route on time.” This can even prevent unnecessary delays and stop unauthorised vehicles from moving, he said. It will also help in identifying those misusing permits and evading tax.

There are a total 71,248 buses and 85,941 commercial goods vehicles operating in the state. There are 4.51 lakh private vehicles like- cabs, maxi cabs and taxis, 16,432 school buses, 24,701 KSRTC (state transport) buses, and 1,900 tourist vehicles, he added.

‘Mere possession of jihadi literature is not an offence’: Delhi Court in NIA case

November 4, 2022 by Nasheman

New Delhi: A court here has framed charges against nine accused under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for propagating the ideology of ISIS even though it observed that mere possession of non-prohibited jihadi literature would not amount to an offence.

The court was hearing a case registered by the National Investigating Agency under the relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code and the UAPA.

“Let the charges be framed against the eight accused — Mushab Anwar, Rhees Rasheed, Deepthi Marla, Mohammad Waqar Lone, Mizha Siddeeque, Shifa Haris, Madesh Shanker, and Ammar Abdul Rahiman — under the relevant provisions of the IPC and the UAPA,” Principal District and Sessions Judge Dharmesh Sharma said in a recent order.

The court framed charges against the accused under Section 120B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC read with Section 2 (o) (Unlawful activity) read with Section 13 (Punishment for indulging in unlawful activities) along with Sections 38 (Offence relating to membership of a terrorist organisation) and 39 (Offence relating to support given to a terrorist organisation) of the UAPA.

The court said all the eight accused were accessing highly provocative jihadi material and subscribing to the ideology of ISIS, besides actively disseminating such material and seeking support from like-minded people.

They were also enticing gullible Muslim youths to follow ISIS policies and professing to be self-styled operatives of ISIS, thus, making all efforts to further the cause of the banned organisation.

The court, meanwhile, discharged an accused, Muzamil Hassan Bhat, from all the charges, saying there was no evidence to establish that he professed to be a member of ISIS or that he did anything to further the activities of the banned organisation.

The court also framed charges against another accused, Obaid Hamid Matta, under Section 2 (o) read with Section 13 of the UAPA for indulging in the commission of unlawful activities.

It also said that merely because Matta was accessing and reading certain hardcore Islamic literature, he did not commit any offence.

The court, however, discharged all the accused for several offences, including those under Sections 17 (Punishment for raising funds for terrorist act), 18 (punishment for conspiracy etc.), 18B (recruiting any person or persons for commission of a terrorist act ), 20 (Punishment for being member of terrorist gang or organisation) and 40 (Offence of raising fund for a terrorist organisation) of the UAPA and Section 121A ( Conspiring to commit certain offences against the State) of the IPC.

It said that the prosecution had failed to prima facie establish that the accused people were members of any terrorist organisation and that mere possession of jihadi literature was not an offence.

“Further, to hold that mere possession of jihadi literature having a particular religious philosophy would amount to an offence, though such literature is not expressly or specifically banned under any provision of law, is not fathomable in law unless and until there is material about the execution of such philosophy so as to do terrorist acts,” the court said.

Such a proposition was contrary to the freedoms and rights guaranteed by the Constitution, the court said.

“Even if they (the accused) were impressed by the said philosophy and ideology, still they cannot be said to be members much less such members as would attract the penal liability – of the said organisation (ISIS),” the court said.

The court said that none of the accused committed any “terrorist act” within the scope of the relevant sections of the UAPA or conspired to wage war against the government.

“The material gathered by the investigation agency at best demonstrates that almost all the accused except Accused 11 (Bhat) were ISIS sympathisers and accessing highly radicalised jihadi material from the web world but there is no iota of material to suggest any of the accused individually or in association committed or planned any terrorist act,” the court said.

The court said that there was no evidence to establish that any of the accused was entrusted with the task of soliciting details of like-minded people, conducting interviews, taking money or facilitating their onward journey to ISIS-controlled territories.

None of the accused had conducted any recruitment process nor was any fund transferred to ISIS, the court said.

Israeli PM Lapid concedes defeat; Benjamin Netanyahu set to become next Prime Minister

Israeli PM Lapid concedes defeat; Benjamin Netanyahu set to become next Prime Minister

Jerusalem: Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid Thursday conceded defeat in the general elections and congratulated opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu, whose coalition of right-wing parties secured a comfortable majority in parliament to form the next government and end the political impasse plaguing the country.

With 99 per cent of the ballots counted, Netanyahu-led right-wing bloc has taken a comfortable lead with 64 seats in the 120-member Knesset, paving way for his triumphant return.

Lapid, who has served as interim prime minister for the past four months, said that he called Netanyahu and congratulated him on his victory.

He further added that he’s instructed all departments of the Prime Minister’s Office to prepare for an orderly transfer of power.

“The State of Israel is above any political consideration,” Lapid said in a tweet. “I wish Netanyahu luck for the sake of the people of Israel and the State of Israel.”

Israelis voted on Tuesday for an unprecedented fifth time in four years to break the political impasse that has paralysed the Jewish nation.

According to the latest updates from the Central Elections Committee, Netanyahu’s Likud party will receive 31 seats, Prime Minister Lapid’s Yesh Atid 24, Religious Zionism 14, National Unity 12, Shas 11 and United Torah Judaism will have eight seats.

Among the smaller parties to have crossed the 3.25 per cent threshold required to qualify for the Knesset or parliament representation, Yisrael Beytenu will have six lawmakers, Ra’am is likely to win five seats along with Hadash-Ta’al. The Labour Party will win just four seats, according to the update.

The Left-wing Meretz party, which is hovering close to the threshold, seems to have slipped slightly even further from qualification.

Arab party Balad, which split from the broader coalition of the Arab parties to go independent, also seems to be failing the threshold mark.

The Netanyahu-led government would see a sharp drop in women in the coalition.

Current results project 9 female lawmakers in parties that back the former prime minister, with none among the ultra-Orthodox factions, according to the Times of Israel newspaper.

Based on these results, the likely Netanyahu-led coalition will have nine female lawmakers six in his Likud party and three from the far-right Religious Zionism, though the figure could end up rising through ministerial appointments.

The outcome marks a stunning comeback for Netanyahu, who is currently on trial in three corruption cases, after a short stint in opposition.

Israel has been locked in an unprecedented period of political stalemate since 2019, when Netanyahu, the country’s longest-serving leader was charged with bribery, fraud and breach of trust.

About 6.78 million Israeli citizens were eligible to elect their 25th Knesset.

Some 210,720 new voters were able to vote for the first time, accounting for about four to five seats, adding an interesting dimension to the polls.

Netanyahu’s return to power is likely to see an upward trajectory in Indo-Israel ties.

An advocate of strong bilateral ties with India, Netanyahu was the second Israeli Prime Minister to visit India in January 2018. Prime Minister Narendra Modi made his historic visit to Israel, the first by an Indian Prime Minister, in July 2017 when the chemistry’ between the two leaders became the subject of intense discussion.

India and Israel elevated their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership during Modi’s visit to Israel. Since then, the relationship between the two countries has focused on expanding knowledge-based partnership, which includes collaboration in innovation and research, including boosting the ‘Make in India’ initiative.

India’s relations with Israel have remained steady and strong even with the incumbent leadership, showing distinct signs of further progress with I2U2 (India, Israel, the United States and the United Arab Emirates) and discussions around a Free Trade Agreement, but it has not matched the heightened hype so visible with Netanyahu in power.

For many years, Netanyahu, Israel’s longest serving premier, appeared to be politically invincible. But he met with a rude jolt in 2021 after being ousted by an unprecedented coalition of parties whose only common goal was to see his ouster.

Born in Tel Aviv in 1949, Netanyahu holds the record of being the longest-serving Prime Minister in the country’s history.

KCR releases ‘evidence’ to nail BJP, urges judiciary to save democracy in Telangana

November 4, 2022 by Nasheman

K Chandrasekhar Rao

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister and TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao on Thursday released what he claimed to be clinching ‘evidence’ in the alleged poaching attempt of four TRS MLAs by the BJP and disclosed that he had sent the same to the Chief Justice of India (CJI), Supreme Court judges and CJs and others judges of high courts as well as presidents of all parties and CMs of all States.

Speaking at a press conference at Pragathi Bhavan, soon after the Munugode bypoll concluded, Rao implored the Judiciary to discuss the ‘evidence’ and take steps as per law to save democracy. He said that they had submitted three-hour-long video footage containing the discussion of the accused with TRS MLAs, to the high court.

“We have obtained the call data of the brokers from 2015 and also retrieved the data from their laptops, which runs into 70,000 to 80,000 pages,” Rao said.

The TRS supremo said that he sent the ‘evidence’ to all the agencies like the CBI, Enforcement Directorate, Central Vigilance Commission, DGPs of all states and all prominent news agencies in the country and media houses.

‘Shah’s name mentioned 20 times, Modi’s twice’

Playing excerpts of the video footage for the media, Rao alleged that the accused claimed that they dethroned governments in eight States and were planning to pull down the governments in Delhi, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan.

He alleged that the accused took the name of Union Home Minister Amit Shah 20 times and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s name twice during their attempts to poach the TRS MLAs.

Finding fault with the BJP for toppling the State governments ruled by the Opposition parties, Rao recalled that the PM had told the public in West Bengal that around 40 Trinamool Congress MLAs were in touch with him.

He recalled that Jayaprakash Narayan started a movement across the country when Indira Gandhi made the mistake of imposing an Emergency, which then led to the defeat of ‘invincible Indira’. Another such movement would be started across the country soon, he said.

The TRS supremo termed the ‘purchasing of MLAs’ and pulling down of the popular State governments as “organised crime”.The CM said that the accused claimed that they had a 24-member gang and even explained how they transported MLAs in Karnataka. He also released the fake ID cards of the accused. The Chief Minister alleged that the accused had multiple driving licences, and Aadhaar and PAN cards.

“This type of undemocratic (practices) is unhealthy and (such) undesirable acts should not continue in the country,” he said.  The BJP was in the hands of ‘anti-Constitutional forces’, he alleged. “I will not keep quiet when they are saying that they will topple my government,” Rao thundered. The CM also alleged that the accused even mentioned Tushar, BJP’s candidate against Rahul Gandhi from the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat, and explained how they were going to pay money to TRS MLAs.

Towards the end of the presser, he urged the PM to do good for the people. “Modi Ji, I am also holding a constitutional position and became the Chief Minister in the same way you became the Prime minister. Please respect democracy.

It may be recalled here that Telangana police arrested three persons — Ramachadra Bharati, Nanda Kumar and Simhayaji — when they allegedly tried to lure four TRS MLAs into BJP on October 26.

Rao is insecure: Kishan

Reacting to the CM’s press conference, Union Tourism Minister G Kishan Reddy said KCR’s ‘insecurity and intolerance’ was evident in his media address, which ‘stemmed from people of Telangana losing faith in the CM’s family’. Kishan reiterated that the BJP had nothing to do with the alleged poaching case, and that it was a lie scripted by some paid artistes and the TRS MLAs involved, which the CM was trying to put forward.
