Long list of aspirants a challenge to Congress brass

MYSURU: The decision of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) to invite applications from ticket aspirants has set the tone for intense lobbying in the party. The aspirants have paid Rs 5,000 as application fee, besides Rs 2 lakh for general constituencies and Rs 1 lakh for SC/ST reserved seats. This will pose a challenge to the party top brass as it could encourage rebellion and dissent within the party 

There are 69 sitting Congress MLAs in 224 assembly constituencies, 16 ministers who tasted defeat in the 2018 polls and three former MPs who are aspiring to get tickets for the assembly elections to be held in 2023.  In veteran BJP leader B S Yeddyurappa’s Shikaripura constituency, there are 15 aspirants who are hopeful of getting a Congress ticket while in Terdal, which was represented by actress and former minister Umashree, there are 15 aspirants. While the Mahadevapura Reserve constituency has 14 aspirants in Bengaluru city, there are 12 hopefuls for Shivamogga Rural constituency.

The KPCC Women’s Wing president Pushpa Amarnath has also thrown her hat into the ring in Mahadevapura and Sakaleshpur constituencies. There are 11 aspirants for Mandya seat and nine in Mulbagal constituency. These aspirants have their own loyalists inside the party and many feel that their supporters will not work actively in the elections if denied tickets. There are reports that some aspiring candidates have already started panchayat-wise tours and are organising booth-level meetings assuming that they will get the ticket.

There is need for the Congress top leaders to hold constituency-wise meetings across the board to address the possible disappointment among aspirants.

A senior party leader, who did not wished to be named, said that the party is now hit by factionalism in a few constituencies and districts and top leaders in the party cannot afford to face wrath of grassroot-level workers or leaders.

ONE ASPIRANT, ONE TICKET: DKS
KPCC president DK Shivakumar on Friday sent out a clear message that every aspirant will be be allotted only one ticket in the 2023 Assembly polls. “There will be one ticket, no matter who the aspirant is”, he told reporters. In 2018, CLP leader Siddaramaiah, the then CM, had chosen to contest from Chamun-deshwari and Badami, while his son contested from Varuna Shivak-umar’s statement is being seen in the context of Sidda-ramaiah trying to contest from two seats in 2023 as well. On raising funds through ticket aspirants, Shivakumar said it is not a new thing as there used to be fund-raising initiatives in the past too. 

Brazil face anxious wait after Neymar injury scare at World Cup

DOHA: Brazil were sweating on the fitness of Neymar on Friday after their talisman sprained his ankle in the World Cup win over Serbia.

The Forward suffered injury  in a collision with Nikola Milenkovic during the second half of the 2-0 win in Qatar on Thursday in Brazil’s opening match.

The 30-year-old Paris Saint-Germain player attempted to continue but was substituted with about 10 minutes to go, shortly after Richarlison put Brazil two goals ahead.

Neymar was seen limping heavily after the game in Doha and photos showed swelling on his right ankle. He declined to speak to journalists as he left the stadium, but posted a light-hearted message on Twitter, without making reference to his injury.

“Tough game but it was important to win,” he said. “Congratulations team, first step taken… six to go.”

Team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar said it was too early to jump to conclusions. “We need to wait 24 to 48 hours to have a better assessment,” said Lasmar. “We have not scheduled any MRI (scan) and tomorrow we’ll have a new assessment. “We need to wait, we cannot make any premature comments about his evolution.”

Coach Tite was optimistic that Neymar would be back to lead Brazil’s bid for a record-extending sixth World Cup crown. “You can be certain that Neymar is going to play in the World Cup,” Tite said, adding that the attacker had initially stayed on the pitch after hurting his ankle “because the team needed him”.

Brazil struggled to impose themselves in the first half against Serbia before finding their spark. Richarlison poked home from close range shortly after the hour mark and then produced an acrobatic finish to double the lead.

They next face Switzerland on Monday, with their final Group G match against Cameroon.

Neymar follows in a long tradition of great Brazilian number 10s and needs just two goals to equal Pele’s all-time record tally of 77 for the South American nation.

Brazil boasts an impressive array of attacking talent including Raphinha, Richarlison and Vinicius Junior and they were able to bring Rodrygo and Gabriel Jesus off the bench against Serbia.

But Neymar, who is playing in his third and possibly last World Cup, is the player who makes the team tick. The Brazilian’s career has though been peppered by injuries which have impacted his previous two World Cups.

In 2014 he suffered a fractured bone in his back in the quarter-final win over Colombia before the hosts were humiliated by Germany in the semi-finals, losing 7-1. Four years later he raced to recover from injury in time for the tournament in Russia, but Brazil never hit the expected heights before losing to Belgium in the last eight.

The former Barcelona star, who has 122 caps for Brazil, also missed the 2019 Copa America after suffering torn ligaments in his right ankle.

In 2021 Neymar was out for about 10 weeks of the French season after suffering ligament damage to his left ankle. This time he arrived fit and firing in Qatar after a fantastic start to the season with PSG, in which he has scored 15 goals in 20 games.

His latest issue could prove just to be a scare. But until we know more, a nation will be holding its breath.

BJP eyes Pasmanda Muslim vote bank as ‘an experiment’

NEW DELHI: Months after Prime Minister Narendra Modi advocated socio-economic and political uplift of Pasmanda Muslims at his party’s national executive meeting, the BJP is now learnt to have started making a new ‘electoral experiment’ with this section of the community with an intent to create a Muslim vote bank for the future. The Pasamanda Muslims, according to a rough estimate constitute around 70-80% of India’s Muslim population (19.50 crore). 

The party is organising conferences to win the community over by its policies and government welfare schemes launched for their socio-economic uplift. The first conference of Pasamanda Muslims was organised in Lucknow on October 16 this year, followed by six other places by the BJP’s OBC and the Minority Morcha (fronts).

So far, six other mega conferences for the communtiy have been organised. UP has the highest number of Pasamanda Muslims, accounting for around 3.5 crore of the population, while Bihar has approximately 1.5 crore such Muslims.

Sources say that the BJP is attempting to bring a larger chunk of the communities, especially those whose ancestors had once converted to Islam from various Hindu castes into the existing OBCs, the SCs and the STs into the fold of party’s votebank. “If the Saffron party succeeds in creating this new electoral equation with Pasamanda Muslim communities along with the OBC, SC and ST vote banks, the party will remain in power at the Centre for the next 50 years,” said a senior party leader.

Pasmanda is a Persian word that means the ‘ones left behind’. The word is used to describe the depressed classes among Muslims who have been deliberately or consciously excluded from the fruits of power and privilege.

Sachar Committee said OBC and SC/ST Muslims were 40% of India’s overall Muslim population in 2004-05. But Pasmanda activists and scholars say they make up 80-85% of India’s Muslim population that is around 19-20crore

Their voting percentage has always been registered more than  70% in every election

Backward, Dalit, and tribal Muslims use the word Pasmanda as an umbrella identity to flag caste-based discrimination within the community.

In UP, the population of Pasmanda Muslims is around 3.5 crore — highest in the country. In Bihar, it is around 1.5 crore

In country’s 18 states including Karnataka, Kerala MP, UP, Bihar and Jharkhand, the Pasmanda Muslims play a very decisive role in the elections, determining the results in a number of constituencies

Richa Chadha apologises after being trolled for tweet on Galwan clash

NEW DELHI: Bollywood actor Richa Chadha has come under fire for posting a tweet on the 2020 Galwan clash, in which several Indian Army soldiers died.

On Wednesday, Richa had reacted to Northern Army Commander Lt General Upendra Dwivedi’s statement that the Indian Army is ready to execute orders like taking back Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

Sharing a post on the statement, Richa took to her Twitter handle and wrote, “Galwan says hi.”

As soon as she tweeted this, all hell broke loose on social media and people started to slam her for allegedly insulting the army by talking about the 2020 clash between India and China.

A user shared, “‘Galwan says hi’ writes Richa Chadha in response to a statement by a commanding officer on POK. Disrespecting those who gave their lives for India. Mocking the Indian army. She proves once again there is no limit to how low this industry can sink. A boycott is all they are worth.”

BJP’s Manjinder Singh Sirsa tweeted, “Disgraceful Tweet. Should be withdrawn at the earliest. Insulting our armed forces is not justified.”

BJP leader and MLA from Maharasthra, Ram Kadam said, “To come in the news and get publicity, will she (Richa Chadha) disrespect the soldiers of our country? What has happened to her? Our soldiers are day and night guarding our country by leaving their families behind. They should be honoured with our heads bowed down.”

He added, “Sitting in the air conditioner, how will this actress who has this mindset will understand their dedication? The whole nation wants her to apologize to the soldiers of our country.”

Meanwhile, Lt General Upendra Dwivedi’s statement was made with reference to Defence Minister’s previous address in which he reiterated New Delhi’s resolve to take back Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), saying all refugees would get their land and homes back.

Lt General Upendra Dwivedi said, “As far as the Indian Army is concerned, it will carry out any order given by the Government of India. Whenever such orders are given, we will always be ready for it.”

“The military is always ready to make sure that ceasefire understanding is never broken as it is in the interest of both nations, but if broken at any time, we will give them a befitting reply,” said Dwivedi, Northern Army Commander on the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan. 

Richa Chadha later posted an apology statement through a tweet: “Even though it can never be my intention in the least, if the 3 words which are being dragged into a controversy have offended or hurt anyone, I apologise and also say that it would sadden me if even unintentionally my words have triggered this feeling in my brothers in the Fauj of which my own Nanaji has been an illustrious part. As a Lt. Col, he took a bullet in the leg in the Indo-China war, in 1960s. My Mamaji was a paratrooper. It’s in my blood.”

She added, “A whole family is affected when their son is martyred or even injured while saving the nation which is made up of people like us and I personally know how it feels. It is an emotive issue for me.”

TRS MLAs ‘poaching’ case: BJP leader Santhosh, three more named as accused

HYDERABAD: Senior BJP leader B L Santhosh and three others were named as accused by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in the case of alleged conspiracy to poach four TRS MLAs, officials said on Thursday.

Following directions from the Telangana High Court, the SIT, probing the case, also issued a second notice to BJP National General Secretary (Organisation) Santhosh, who is yet to appear before it.

In the fresh notice, he has been asked to appear before SIT for questioning on November 26 or November 28, official sources told.

Based on the investigations so far, the SIT filed a memo in a special Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) court here adding the names of Santhosh and two persons from Kerala–Jaggu Swami and Tushar Vellapally, besides B Srinivas, as accused in the case, they said.

Three persons — Ramachandra Bharati alias Satish Sharma, Nanda Kumar and Simhayaji Swamy, were already named as accused in the case after a complaint was lodged by TRS MLA Pilot Rohith Reddy, among four legislators, against them on October 26.

As per the FIR copy, Rohith Reddy alleged that the accused offered him Rs 100 crore and in return the legislator had to leave the TRS and contest as a BJP candidate in the next Assembly election.

The Telangana High Court on Wednesday had directed the SIT to again serve notice on Santhosh under Section 41A of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) to Santhosh.

Earlier, the Telangana SIT had issued notices to Santhosh and the two persons from Kerala to appear before it for questioning on November 21.

However, they did not turn up before the probe panel.

Srinivas, who was also summoned by the SIT, had appeared before it.

The Telangana government on November 9 ordered the setting up of a seven-member SIT to probe into the alleged poaching of the MLAs.

NAPIER: India skipper Hardik Pandya said “attack was the best defence on this wicket” as his unbeaten 18-ball 30-run cameo helped in a tie via Duckworth-Lewis method here on Tuesday.

Chasing 161 to win, India were struggling at 21 for three in 2.5 overs but Pandya smashed three boundaries and a six to take the visitors to 75 for four, which proved to be at par with the DLS score when the match was called off due to rain.

The two teams thus shared the honours with India clinching the three-match series 1-0, courtesy their 65-run win in the second game on Sunday.

The opening game was washed out without a ball being bowled in Wellington.

“Would have liked to win the game by playing the full overs, but it is what it is. At some point, I felt attack is the best defence on this wicket,” Hardik said during the post-match presentation.

“We know the kind of bowling attacks they have, it was very important to get those 10-15 runs extra even though we lost a couple of wickets. A game like this could have given us an opportunity to test some of the players, but having said weather is something we cannot control. I’m going home, taking my time off and be with my son.”

New Zealand were 130 for two in the 16th over but the duo of Arshdeep Singh (4/37) and Mohammed Siraj (4/17) triggered a collapse as the Kiwis were bowled out for 160 with two balls to spare.

Defending the total, New Zealand reduced India to 21 for 3 in 2.5 overs.

New Zealand’s stand-in skipper Tim Southee admitted his team could have done better with the bat but lauded the bowlers for taking three quick wickets.

“It’s disappointing even with the bat. We spoke about getting out there and giving everything we could, take early wickets. We knew if we can get those wickets, anything could happen, but unfortunately, the weather came in,” said Southee, who claimed 2 for 27 in his three overs.

“You don’t know until both sides batted on it, would have been an interesting game but hasn’t gone the full tilt. Little bit of uncertainty around the scoreboard whether it was a tie when the rain came in. Could have gone either way. The way we attacked with the ball and to put them under pressure was pleasing. Nice to be back in some ODI cricket against a quality side like India. Hoping for a good crowd in Auckland.”

Siraj, who was adjudged the Player of the Match, for snapping 4 for 17 runs, said he was rewarded for bowling hard lengths.

“The wicket wasn’t easy to bat and I was prepared to bowl hard lengths which gave me the rewards. I prepared myself to bowl hard lengths and had so much practice during World Cup and I just executed my plans. I always keep it simple. Just bowl the hard lengths. The weather is not in our hands, happy with the series win.”

Suryakumar Yadav, who had scored an unbeaten 111-run knock in the opening T20, won the Player of the Series.

“Really happy with the way things went till now, would have loved to have a full game here and as Siraj said the weather is not in our hands,” he said.

“The pressure is always there and at the same time I’m enjoying my batting, just going there and expressing myself. Not carrying any baggage out there. The intent and approach will remain the same. We can just go out and express ourselves.”

India and New Zealand will now play the three-match ODI series, beginning with the opening match on Friday.

Religious freedom and related human rights in India are under threat: USCIRF alleges

WASHINGTON: Religious freedom and related human rights in India are under ongoing threat, the US Commission for International Religious Freedom alleged on Tuesday in an unusual year-end update of the status of its assessment of religious freedom in the country

India has previously rejected the USCIRF’s observations, terming them as “biased and inaccurate”.

The US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) is a Congressional-appointed body. Its recommendations are, however, not mandatory to be implemented by the US State Department.

In its 2022 Annual Report early this year USCIRF recommended that the US Department of State-designate India as a ‘country of particular concern’ for engaging in or tolerating systematic, ongoing, and egregious religious freedom violations, as set forth by the International Religious Freedom Act.

The US State Department has refused to incorporate the commission’s recommendations so far.

Reiterating its recommendations of early this year, USCIRF argued that such a designation would reinforce the United States’ concern regarding the conditions discussed in this country update and would encourage the Indian government to diverge from policies that violate religious freedom and promote communal divides.

In its six-page country update report on India, USCIRF has published its map three times.

Two of the maps are distorted and do not reflect a true geographical map of India.

The report said in 2022, religious freedom conditions in India remained poor.

During the year, the Indian government at the national, state, and local levels continued to promote and enforce policies, including laws targeting religious conversion, interfaith relationships, and cow slaughter, that negatively affect Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Dalits and Adivasis.

The national government also continued to suppress critical voices, particularly religious minorities and those advocating on their behalf, including through surveillance, harassment, demolition of property, arbitrary travel bans, and detention under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and by targeting nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) under the Financial Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA), the report said.

The pilot implementation of the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state of Assam continued to exacerbate fears of losing citizenship among Muslims, who lack protection under the 2019 Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), it said.

In July this year, the Ministry of External Affairs, responding to the USCIRF’s report said, “We have seen the biased and inaccurate comments on India by the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF).”

“These comments reflect a severe lack of understanding of India and its constitutional framework, its plurality and its democratic ethos. Regrettably, USCIRF continues to misrepresent facts time and again in its statements and reports in pursuance of its motivated agenda. Such actions only serve to strengthen concerns about the credibility and objectivity of the organisation,” the spokesperson of MEA said in New Delhi.

Lawyer gives ‘supari’ to murder his father, stepmother; gets stabbed instead

KOPPAL: In a weird turn of events, a lawyer who had given ‘supari’ to a gang to eliminate his father and stepmother, was stabbed by the attackers. The incident was reported in Gangavati last week and the police have booked a case after the ‘victim’  recovered from his stab injuries.

The police said that 39-year-old Yogesh Desai, a lawyer from Koppal district, had promised to pay `3 lakh to two ‘supari killers’ from Bengaluru and he arranged for them to travel to Koppal where his father lives.
Yogesh had hatched a plan to kill his father and his current wife, along with his brother-in-law. The accused stays with his sister and brother-in-law in Yeshwanthpur, Bengaluru. Desai allegedly gave contract of killing his father to Mohammad Fayaz and Sohan.

On November 18, Yogesh took the assailants in his car to show them his father’s house and also the house of his stepmother. Meanwhile, the assailants started arguing with Yogesh in the car as they found out that he had  paid them less than what he had promised. Sohan was driving the car and Yogesh was sitting in the front seat.

Fayaz, who was sitting in the back seat, allegedly stabbed Yogeshand pushed him out of the car. “We received a message about a man being pushed out of a car, and he was bleeding. The incident was reported in Jayanagar area of Gangavati. When we visited the spot, the man was in a bad shape and we took him to hospital,” said a police officer.

Upon questioning Yogesh in hospital, he reportedly narrated a fake story. However, the police started digging deeper. “When we were questioning Yogesh, he received a call from one of the attackers. They threatened him for giving them just half the money and demanded the other half. After the call was over, Yogesh confessed,” police said.

Bengaluru: Mechanic kills man, brings body to police station

BENGALURU: The Ramamurthy Nagar police were shocked to see a man coming to the police station with the body of a 48-year-old man whom he had murdered. The accused, a mechanic, brought the body in his car around 1 am on Tuesday.

The murder took place after the two had an altercation over non-payment of loans, during which the accused Rajashekar (31) killed his friend Maheshappa by hitting him with an iron rod.    

Maheshappa is alleged to have taken money from Rajashekar and his mother by telling them that he would get them huge loans from co-operative societies and other banks. Instead of keeping his word, the victim allegedly escaped and was hiding at his hometown near Nanjangud.

Maheshappa was killed on the way to the city from Himanagundi. The victim is said to have conned many people by assuring them of getting bank loans at cheaper interest rates. Maheshappa is said to have gone into hiding after cheating many people. “The accused has claimed that the victim had to give him around Rs 1.5 crore. The car in which the body was brought to the police station has been seized,” said an officer.

Bharat Jodo Yatra enters MP; Rahul says their campaign is against hatred, violence in society

BORDALI (MP): The Bharat Jodo Yatra led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi entered Bodarli village in Madhya Pradesh’s Burhanpur district from neighbouring Maharashtra on Wednesday morning.ADVERTISEMENTAds by 

On the occasion, Gandhi said their campaign was against hatred, violence and fear being spread in society.

A large number of Congressmen carrying the tricolour in their hands reached Bodarli to join the foot march.

Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole handed over the tricolour to Madhya Pradesh party chief Kamal Nath to formally launch the 12-day-long yatra in the central state, where it will cover a distance of 380 km before entering Rajasthan.

Bodarli, a village with a population of nearly 6,000, was decorated with banana leaves as the region is known for the cultivation of fruit.

Folk artists welcomed the yatra on its arrival in Madhya Pradesh. On the occasion, Gandhi said, “This yatra is against hatred, violence and fear being spread in the country. We have started the Bharat Jodo Yatra by taking the tricolour in our hands from Kanyakumari. Nobody can stop this tricolour from reaching Srinagar.”

Targeting the central government on the issues of unemployment and inflation, Gandhi alleged, “The BJP first spreads fear in the minds of youth, farmers and labourers and when it sets in, they convert it into violence.”

He called five-year-old boy Rudra, who was among the crowd present in the village, on the stage and asked him about his ambition, to which the child said he wanted to become a doctor.

“In present India, it will be difficult for Rudra to fulfil his dreams as his parents have to spend crores of rupees to get an education in private medical colleges. He will have to work as a labourer as he won’t be able to pay the fees,” Gandhi said targeting the growing trend of privatisation of education in the country.

He also claimed that industries, airports and seaports were in the hands of only three-four industrialists in the country. Even the Railways is also going into their hands, he added.

“This is an India of injustice and we don’t want such an India,” Gandhi said.

“The money going out of the pockets of the common man for purchasing costly petrol and cooking gas is going into the pockets of these three-four industrialists, he claimed.

Welcoming the yatra in Madhya Pradesh, Kamal Nath claimed it will be most successful in the state.

Senior Congress leaders including former chief minister Digvijaya Singh, Leader of Opposition in the MP Assembly Govind Singh, former union ministers Suresh Pachouri and Arun Yadav among others were present on the occasion.

On Tuesday, Nath said Congress general secretary in-charge of Uttar Pradesh Priyanka Gandhi Vadra along with her family would take part in the foot march for the first time.

Vadra, the sister of Rahul Gandhi, will join the yatra between Burhanpur and Indore on November 24-25, Nath had said.

The Congress has made elaborate arrangements for the yatra in MP, where the Assembly polls are due next year.

It had lost power in the state in 2020 after a section of its MLAs quit the party.

The yatra, a mass contact initiative of the Congress, will pass through western Madhya Pradesh’s Malwa-Nimar region, where the party had gained a convincing lead over the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2018 Assembly polls and subsequently formed government under Nath.

But, 22 MLAs later quit the party following which the Nath government fell and later the BJP came back to power in the state under the leadership of Shivraj Singh Chouhan in March 2020.

The Congress’s Bharat Jodo Yatra started on September 7 from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu.
