Karnataka CM’s meet on Covid norms in Belagavi on December 26

December 26, 2022 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: With the Omicron subvariant that is causing havoc in China detected in India, the state government is likely to frame Covid guidelines ahead of the New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai is holding a meeting in Belagavi on Monday with Health Minister Dr K Sudhakar, Revenue Minister R Ashoka and members of the Technical Advisory Committee on Covid. Ashoka, also the minister for disaster management, however, ruled out any severe restrictions on New Year celebrations and on travel.

“The Centre has already given us several instructions and the state government will take a decision based on them,” Bommai said in Bengaluru. He stressed that the decision will take international repercussions into consideration. Last week, the state government decided to make the wearing of masks compulsory in closed spaces.

Authorities also instructed mandatory tests for those with symptoms of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI). Ashoka said the state is unlikely to see a lockdown or other severe restrictions.

“We don’t want to trigger panic among the public. We want to ensure that precautionary measures are taken. Rules like wearing masks will be back, especially indoors and in air-conditioned halls,” he said.
Asked if instructions would not queer the holiday mood of the people, Ashoka said the government is only testing international travellers who are landing in Karnataka.

“There will be no restrictions on travelling within the state or country as the situation is not that bad,” he added. The meeting on Monday is likely to discuss preparations and ramping up of infrastructure, like oxygen beds, ICUs, medicines and other facilities.

December 26, 2022 by Nasheman

Mansukh Mandaviya

NEW DELHI: Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya is scheduled to hold a virtual meeting with the Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Monday.

The IMA informed that Mandaviya will hold the meeting via video conferencing at 4 pm regarding the Covid-19 situation and preparedness.

On Saturday, Mandaviya said that the government has been working to control the spread of Covid-19 and urged the people to wear masks and follow covid appropriate behaviour.

“We are working on alert mode to control the spread of Covid-19 and are conducting environmental, sewage and human surveillance. Virus RNA was found in the sewage samples in Delhi and Mumbai,” Mandaviya had said.

He further urged the people to wear masks, avoid crowded places and follow Covid-appropriate behaviour.

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Saturday decided to hold mock drills at all health facilities across the country on December 27 in the wake of the COVID alarm due to a surge in infection in many countries.

This is to ensure readiness in the availability of oxygen support, and ICU beds among other preparedness measures in case of a surge of COVID cases in India.

According to the Ministry, the objective of the exercise is to ensure the operational readiness of these health facilities for the management of COVID.

Detailing the focus on the parameters during the mock drills, it said that the main focus will be on the bed capacities including isolation, oxygen-supported and ICU beds at the health facilities.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also chaired a high-level meeting on Thursday (December 22) to assess the COVID-19 situation in the country and cautioned against complacency while laying stress on testing and strengthening the surveillance measures, especially at international airports.

He emphasized COVID-appropriate behavior at all times, especially in view of the upcoming festive season, including wearing masks in crowded public places.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Health Miniter Mansukh Mandaviya and NITI Aayog Chief Executive Officer Parameswaran Iyer were among others who participated in the meeting.

Sisodia’s unmistakable message to liquor traders

December 26, 2022 by Nasheman

The Enforcement Directorate has asked the Central Bureau of Investigation to prosecute Delhi transport minister Kailash Gehlot under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code for allowing his official bungalow to be occupied and used by a private person, Vijay Nair, who has emerged as the key dealmaker in the Delhi liquor scam. According to ED, Vijay Nair gave a statement under Section 50 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002, that he had been functioning from Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s camp office and residing in a government bungalow allotted to Delhi minister Kailash Gehlot, who was part of the Group of Ministers that cleared the controversial Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22.

The ED said Vijay Nair does not have any other residence in Delhi and Gehlot lives in a private residence in Najafgarh. Spelling out the offence committed by Gehlot, the ED said “when a person, who is a minister, is allotted a bungalow for the purpose of his residence, he is entrusted with the dominion of the property which is meant for his personal use as his residence. But when he dishonestly uses this property and allows someone else to use the same, it is a criminal breach of trust u/s 405 of IPC, punishable u/s 409 of IPC, since the minister is a public servant.

Similarly, when a minister is allotted a government accommodation, he makes a representation that it will be used by himself, and allowing someone else to use the residence, who is not entitled to the same, amounts to false representation, an offence u/s 415 of IPC punishable u/s 420 of IPC.” Since the ED is not empowered to investigate, it has furnished the information u/s 66(2) of PMLA to the CBI in consonance with the Supreme Court judgement in the matter of Vijay Madanlal Choudhary Vs Union of India.

The ED chargesheet filed in the Special Court of Judge M K Nagpal is full of interesting nuggets of information that throw light on the relations between the key accused. In a statement dated 10.09.2022, accused Sameer Mahendru, who held wholesale and retail licenses and is a beneficial owner of Indo Spirits, gave graphic details of a meeting called by Manish Sisodia, who holds the excise portfolio. “There was a meeting that was chaired by Manish Sisodia, Dy CM, wherein many retailers were present. When all the members reached and the convening officer asked the Dy CM to start the meeting, Sisodia said that they should wait for Dinesh Arora.

Dinesh arrived late and was gestured by Sisodia to sit next to him. After that day, a message was received by the market that Dinesh Arora was close to the AAP, especially the Dy CM.” Dinesh Arora figures as accused number 11 in the CBI’s chargesheet in the liquor scam. The agency has found him to be involved in handling/transferring kickbacks. He was also summoned by the ED for examination under PMLA. In a statement dated 01.10.2022, Arora told the ED that “he had met Sanjay Singh through whom he came in contact with Manish Sisodia at a party in his (Arora’s) restaurant Unplugged Courtyard.” Arora told ED that before he was roped in for a role in liquor trade, he had raised Rs 82 lakhs from restauranteurs known to him and gave it to Sisodia as party funds.

The ED claims that Arora has also admitted to hawala transactions in association with Vijay Nair. These transactions, running into crores, were carried out using currency note numbers and hawala traders in Delhi and Hyderabad whom he has named. Arora also worked closely with Nair to create partnerships/cartels for the South Group, which includes K Kavitha, daughter of Telangana CM K Chandrashekhar Rao. He has given details of his meetings with Kavitha in connection with Delhi liquor trade.

December 26, 2022 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI:  The outgoing year 2022 has been inspirational and wonderful for India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday in his last  ‘Mann Ki Baat’ episode of the year.  Expressing gratitude to the people, PM Modi said that it was the strength of the people of the country, their cooperation, their determination and success that made the outgoing 2022 an inspiring year.

The PM also made an appeal to the people to be more cautious as Covid-19 has again started spreading in many countries. Lauding the country’s performances in 2022, the PM said: “In 2022, India completed 75 years of Independence and started observing the ‘Amrit Kaal’. This year the country gained new momentum.”

He also said it attained the status of the world’s fifth largest economy, achieved the record surpassing “incredible” figure of 220 crore Covid vaccine doses and crossed the “magical” export figure of $400 billion.

The country adopted and lived its resolution of ‘self-reliant India’ and welcomed its first indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant and also attained glory in space, drone and defence sectors in the year, he added. Agra man tests positive for COVID-19 after returning from China

December 26, 2022 by Nasheman

AGRA: A 40-year-old man, who returned from China two days back, has tested positive for COVID-19 following which he has been isolated at his home here, Chief Medical Officer Arun Srivastava said on Sunday.

His samples will be sent to Lucknow for genome sequencing, he said.

“The man has been isolated at his home and teams of the health department have been asked to conduct tests of his family members and those who came in contact with him,” Srivastava added.

The man returned to Agra from China via Delhi on December 23 following which he was tested at a private lab.

The report came out positive for Covid, he added.

This the first Covid positive case in the district detected after November 25, officials said.

Amid a surge in Covid cases in some countries, including China, the Centre has ramped up its anti-coronavirus measures.

The Centre had said RT-PCR test would be made mandatory for passengers from China, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Thailand and asked states to conduct a mock drill on December 27 to ensure readiness of health facilities including medical oxygen generation plants.

Meanwhile, the health department in Agra began screening and collecting samples of foreign tourists at Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Akbar’s Tomb here.

Besides, samples are also being collected at the Agra airport, railway station and Inter Bus Terminal (ISBT), officials said.

“Sample collection at Sarojani Naidu Medical College, District Hospital and Primary and Community Health Centres in rural Agra have been initiated with priority.

Those who have symptoms of cold, cough and fever can visit the health centres to undergo Covid test,” CMO added.

Srivastava added, “Residents are being asked to wear masks and maintain social distance at public places. They have been advised to use hand sanitiser and follow Covid guidelines to avoid the infection. Besides, residents are advised to get their precautionary dose of COVID-19.”

People can contact on the health department’s helpline numbers 0562-2600412, 9458569043 regarding any queries on the disease, officials said.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had on Thursday reviewed the COVID-19 situation in the state and directed officials to monitor the new coronavirus variant, ramp up testing and conduct genome sequencing of fresh cases.

He had also asked them to make people aware about wearing masks in crowded public places such as hospitals, buses, railway stations and markets.

US blizzard leaves over 30 dead, power outages, parts of New York marooned

December 26, 2022 by Nasheman

NEW YORK: A brutal winter storm brought Christmas Day danger and misery to millions of Americans Sunday as intense snow and frigid cold gripped parts of the eastern United States, with weather-related deaths rising to at least 31.

A crisis situation was unfolding in Buffalo, in western New York, where a blizzard has left the city marooned, with emergency services unable to reach high-impact areas.

“It is (like) going to a warzone, and the vehicles along the sides of the roads are shocking,” said New York Governor Kathy Hochul, a native of Buffalo, where eight-foot (2.4-meter) snow drifts and power outages have made for life-threatening conditions.

Hochul told reporters Sunday evening that residents were still in the throes of a “very dangerous life-threatening situation” and warned anyone in the area to remain indoors.

More than 200,000 people across several eastern states woke up without power on Christmas morning and many more had their holiday travel plans upended, although the five-day-long storm featuring blizzard conditions and ferocious winds showed signs of easing.

The extreme weather sent wind chill temperatures in all 48 contiguous US states below freezing over the weekend, stranded holiday travellers with thousands of flights cancelled and trapped residents in ice- and snow-encrusted homes.

Thirty-one weather-related deaths have been confirmed across nine states, including four in Colorado who likely died of exposure and at least 12 in New York state, where officials warned the number would likely rise.

Officials described historically dangerous conditions in the snow-prone Buffalo region, with hours-long whiteouts and bodies discovered in vehicles and under snow banks as emergency workers struggled to search for those in need of rescue.

The city’s international airport remains closed until Tuesday and a driving ban remained in effect for all of Erie County, where the lake-side metropolis is located.

A giant tree lays across the intersection of West Delavan Avenue &Bidwell Parkway in  N.Y.

“We now have what’ll be talked about not just today but for generations (as) the blizzard of ’22,” Hochul said, adding that the brutality had surpassed the region’s prior landmark snowstorm of 1977 in “intensity, the longevity, the ferocity of the winds.”

Due to frozen electric substations, some residents were not expected to regain power until Tuesday, with one frozen substation reportedly buried under 18 feet of snow, a senior county official said.

The National Weather Service warned that blizzard conditions in western New York’s Great Lakes region caused by lake-effect snow was continuing Sunday, with “additional snow accumulations of 2 to 3 feet through tonight.”

One couple in Buffalo, across the border from Canada, told AFP Saturday that with the roads completely impassible, they would not be making a 10-minute drive to see their family for Christmas.

“It’s tough because the conditions are just so bad… a lot of fire departments aren’t even sending out trucks for calls,” said 40-year-old Rebecca Bortolin.

A broader travel nightmare was in full effect for millions.

The storm, one of the fiercest in decades, forced the cancellation of more than 2,400 US flights on Sunday, in addition to some 3,500 scrapped Saturday and nearly 6,000 Friday, according to tracking website Flightaware.com.

Travellers remained stranded or delayed at airports throughout Christmas Day including in Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Detroit and New York.

Road ice and white-out conditions also led to the temporary closure of some of the nation’s busiest transport routes, including the cross-country Interstate 70.

Vehicles sit along U.S. 131 north by 84th Street on Dec. 23 in Byron Center, Mich.

Drivers were being warned not to take to the roads — even as the nation reached what is usually its busiest time of year for travel.

The extreme weather has severely taxed electricity grids, with multiple power providers urging millions of people to reduce usage to minimize rolling blackouts in places like North Carolina and Tennessee.

At one point on Saturday, nearly 1.7 million customers were without electricity in the biting cold, according to tracker poweroutage.us.

The figure dropped substantially by Sunday evening, although more than 70,000 customers in eastern states still lacked power.

In British Columbia, Canada, a Saturday bus rollover believed to be caused by icy roads left four people dead and sent 53 to the hospital, including two still in critical condition early Sunday.

Hundreds of thousands were meanwhile left without power in Ontario and Quebec, many flights were cancelled in major cities and train passenger service between Toronto and Ottawa was suspended.

December 24, 2022 by Nasheman

TIRUCHY:  Amid the Union government’s recent advisory to states and union territories to ramp up genome sequencing and track variants in the wake of a surge in Covid-19 cases across the globe, Health Minister Ma Subramanian on Wednesday said testing is being carried out in Chennai and assured that fresh cases are being monitored in the state.

Jayalalithaa turned down doctors’ plea for treating her abroad, says Sasikala

December 24, 2022 by Nasheman

VK Sasikala

CHENNAI: Former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, when she was being treated at a private hospital in Chennai in 2016, turned down foreign doctors requests to get treated abroad, says VK Sasikala.

“Though we wished that she be given treatment abroad, it did not take place because of her decision,” Sasikala said here on Friday.

Breaking her silence on the report of the Arumughaswamy Commission, Sasikala said, “Doctors from foreign countries personally asked Amma about treating her abroad, but she denied saying Chennai is a medical hub and all facilities are available here. Though we all wished to take her abroad, it did not take place because of her decision. Amma was recovering well, and on the day she suffered cardiac arrest, she was watching the television.”

She was answering queries from reporters after celebrating Christmas with elderly people at Mercy Home on Halls Road here. Sasikala revealed that Jayalalithaa had ordered gold jewels to be presented to the doctors and other medical staff who looked after her.

“We had fixed December 19 as the date for her discharge from the hospital, and she told the jewellery makers that the gift items should reach her by December 15. “

When questioned about the report of the Arumughaswamy Commission, Sasikala said, “AIIMS doctors, private hospital doctors and government doctors gave statements on Amma’s health on a daily basis, and there was nothing to hide.”

Questioned whether Jayalalithaa discussed who should lead the AIADMK after her time, Sasikala said, “Amma knew who would be best suited for that job. Even works on that count were going on. But unexpectedly, she fell. Even now, I confidently say that no one can harm the AIADMK.”

Responding to a query about the possibility of unifying the factions of the AIADMK since Edappadi K Palaniswami and O Panneerselvam are flexing their muscles in different directions, VK Sasikala said, “I am confident that unification of the AIADMK is possible even now I say, we will all together face the Lok Sabha elections and win.”

On the charge that AIADMK, though being the principal opposition party, has been facilitating another party occupying that space, Sasikala said, “In Tamil Nadu, there is no such situation.  Press and Youtube channels cannot decide who should be in power. We have witnessed this truth during the Amma (Jayalalithaa) regime. It is the people who decide, and they alone make a political party win.”

Mirzapur’s Sania: Daughter of TV mechanic who is set to become first Muslim woman IAF pilot

December 24, 2022 by Nasheman

LUCKNOW: Diligence and determination help realise all dreams, believes Sania Mirza, the daughter of a TV mechanic from Mirzapur, as she has cracked the prestigious NDA exam and will join the Academy in Khadakwasla in Pune on December 27.

Who is Sania Mirza? First Muslim girl in India to be selected for fighter pilot training

She will be the country’s first Muslim woman and the state’s first IAF pilot.

Hailing from the Jasovar Village in Mirzapur, a backward district of eastern UP and known for its carpets, Sania always dreamt of becoming a fighter pilot in Indian Air Force. She cracked the NDA exam by securing the 149th rank.

“There are only two seats reserved for women in the fighter pilot category. I had attempted earlier also but failed. This was my second attempt and I managed to qualify for it this time,” says Sania with a glint of pride blended with happiness in her eyes.

In the National Defence Academy 2022 examination, there were a total of 400 seats of which 19 seats were reserved for women. Of those 19, two seats were reserved for fighter pilots.

Sania, who considers India’s first woman fighter pilot Flight Lieutenant Avni Chaturvedi of Madhya Pradesh as her role model, has many feathers to her cap.

She studied from primary to Class 10 at Pandit Chintamani Dubey Inter College in the village itself. After that, she attended the Guru Nanak Girls Inter College in Mirzapur city and became the district topper in the 12th UP Board. On April 10, she appeared for the NDA exam.

“I was very much inspired by Flight Lieutenant Avani Chaturvedi and decided to join NDA. I hope the younger generation will someday get inspired by me as well,” says Sania.

Strongly believing that language can never be a barrier on the way to success, Sania, a student of Hindi medium, said that firm determination paved her way to success. “Students having received education in Hindi medium are also capable of following their dreams with success,” she asserts.

Not only her parents, Shahid Ali Mirza and Tabassum Mirza, but the entire village is taking pride in her success. “Sania, after completion of her training successfully at Khadakwala, would be another fighter pilot serving the nation,” says the proud father Shahid Ali.

Soon, the mother, Tabassum Mirza pitches in saying, “Our daughter has made us and the entire village proud. She has pursued her dream with conviction and is an inspiration for every girl in the village to follow their dreams.”

However, Sania has credited her success to her parents and to the Centurion Defence Academy where she learned the trick to crack NDA.

Women have been making a mark and the sky has been the limit for them in the defence sector. Flight Lieutenant Avani Chaturvedi is the country’s first woman combat pilot along with Mohana Singh Jitarwal, and Bhawana Kanth. On the other, Flight Lieutenant Shivangi Singh, commissioned in 2017, made the country proud as the first Rafale woman fighter pilot.

Two Indian-origin dairy owners’ stores attacked by robbers in New Zealand

December 24, 2022 by Nasheman

New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern

MELBOURNE: Two dairy stores owned by Indian-origin businesspersons were targeted by armed robbers this week in New Zealand, according to media reports, nearly a month after a businessman of Indian descent was killed in a similar attack.

Ajit Patel, who owns a dairy on Melrose Road, said that five masked men with baseball bats came into his store for about 10 to 15 seconds early on Monday, a report by 1News said.

Patel said the men tried to take the till but did not succeed.

In another attack, a group of people ram-raided Sandra Dairy on Marua Road in Ellerslie and stole several items before fleeing in a second vehicle, said a police spokesperson.

The two shops were among six stores across Auckland and Waikato areas that were targeted by robbers earlier this week.

The country has seen increasing cases of violence and crime against small business owners among which Indian-origin businesses have been the target of many of them.

Last Saturday, four men entered Indian-origin Puneet Singh’s dairy store in Hamilton and cut off two of his fingers with a machete.

Last month, a 34-year-old Indian-origin dairy shop worker, Janak Patel was murdered in Sandringham following which the country erupted in protests.

Following the murder, the New Zealand government announced new measures to combat retail crime – including a fog cannon subsidy scheme open to all small shops and dairies.
