Our relationship with Indian diaspora bolstered due to Sushma Swaraj’s efforts: Jaishankar

Our relationship with Indian diaspora bolstered due to Sushma Swaraj's efforts: Jaishankar
External affairs minister S Jaishankar

Vienna: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has praised his predecessor late Sushma Swaraj, commending her for being at the forefront in bolstering relations with the Indian diaspora.

Jaishankar made these comments while addressing members of the Indian diaspora here in the Austrian capital on Sunday.

When the minister was asked what foreign policies have changed since Swaraj took over as India’s External Affairs Minister, Jaishankar said: “I’m very glad that you mentioned my predecessor the late Sushma Swaraj ji. The fact that our relationship with the Indian communities abroad are strong and will remain stronger, she led from the front.

“I would say in those five years when she was the minister as she was the face and the voice of that message,” Jaishankar said.

“And of course we created a system for that to happen but I still feel that she was so symbolic of that change that I’m personally very grateful that you have recalled her at a time like this,” he added.

Swaraj passed away on August 6, 2019 at the age of 67, following a cardiac arrest.

An accomplished lawyer, politician and diplomat, Swaraj served as the External Affairs Minister in the first Narendra Modi government from 2014 to 2019.

During his address, Jaishankar also praised the contributions of the diaspora in promoting Indo-Austria relations.

“When people think of India, they don’t think of a country, they think of a person. They relate to an Indian and the experience they had with that Indian. If that experience with that Indian is good their impression of India flows from there. For me, all the diplomacy I do is nothing compared to the image and the sentiment that you create. So, keep doing what you are doing here,” he said.

Recalling the challenges faced during the Covid-19 crisis and the Ukraine conflict, he said the Modi government demonstrated that it will do whatever is necessary to take care of its citizens abroad.

“During Covid-19 or during the Ukraine crisis, we demonstrated that we will do whatever it takes, including putting our military forces to use to take care of Indians, and we do that because when people speak about the rise of India and taking its place in the world, the first duty of any country or government is to take care of its people. It’s something that is a very deep belief of the Prime Minister himself,” he added.

Gujarat: Woman kills ailing 3-month-old daughter by throwing her off hospital’s 3rd floor; arrested

January 3, 2023 by Nasheman

Ahmedabad: A 23-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly flinging her three-month-old daughter from the third floor of the civil hospital in Ahmedabad in Gujarat, resulting in the infant’s death, a police official said on Monday.

The incident took place in the medical facility in Asarwa area here in the early hours of Sunday, he added.

“Farzanabanu Malek, a resident of Petlad taluka in the state’s Anand district, has said she took this extreme step as her child Amrinbanu was ailing since birth and she could not bear to see her in so much pain,” said PP Pirojia, Additional Commissioner of Police of ‘F’ Division.

“She had, however, initially tried to mislead by claiming the child had gone missing from the hospital. But the CCTV footage of the civil hospital showed otherwise. The child was admitted there for the past two weeks,” he said.

“In the CCTV footage, she can be seen going towards the gallery carrying her daughter and then coming back empty handed. Amrin’s dead body was found by hospital staff on the ground floor. The woman has admitted to her crime,” ACP Pirojia said.

As per the FIR registered with Shahibaug police station on Sunday, the child fell ill immediately after birth and was operated at SSG Hospital in Vadodara, where she was admitted for 24 days, an official said.

The child’s father Asif has told police the doctors at Vadodara had cited consumption of contaminated water as the cause of the ailment, the official said.

As per the FIR, the child was taken to a hospital in Nadiad on December 14 after her condition deteriorated and then she was transferred to the civil hospital here as a part of her intestine had protruded from her stomach.

After being told by the accused that their daughter had gone missing from the civil hospital, Asif alerted the staff there and called police, as per the FIR.

Congress high command will decide on who will be the CM: D K Shivakumar

Congress high command will decide on who will be the CM: D K Shivakumar
D K Shivakumar KPCC President

Hubballi: Karnataka Congress President D K Shivakumar on Monday said the party high command will decide as to who the chief minister will be in the event of the party coming to power in the Assembly elections, likely by April-May.

Conveying good wishes to people of the state and all political parties for the New Year, he however wished that the Congress comes to power.

“I wish good for media, people of the state for the New Year, I also wish good for all parties, but we (Congress) should get the power,” Shivakumar said.

Speaking to reporters here, in response to a question, he said, “It is not that I should become the chief minister, it will be decided by the high command. Mallikarjun Kharge (AICC President), Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi (former AICC Presidents) will decide. What ever they decide is like prasada.”

With Congress Legislature Party leader Siddaramaiah too along with Shivakumar nursing chief ministerial ambitions in the event of the party coming to power in the state, there seems to be a game of political one-upmanship, between the two leaders as the election nears.

The Congress appears to be a divided house, with supporters of both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar often openly projecting their leaders as the next chief minister.

Calling the BJP “university of lies” on the Mahadayi river water issue, Shivakumar said, “for three-and-a half years they (BJP) couldn’t do any thing, despite their own government in Maharashtra…they have taken most of our MLAs through ‘Operation Lotus’ in Goa and are in power there too, as they did here in Karnataka.”

“Without doing anything for three years, as we are preparing to raise a voice on the issue, instead of giving necessary clearances they have now issued a draft note…They (centre) have put a rider pointing to the Supreme Court’s final order on the issue, instead of getting the cases filed in the SC withdrawn,” he said, adding despite having 25 BJP MPs from the state, they did not meet the PM on the issue even once in order to get the work started.

“Who is going to stop you (Karnataka government) from taking up work within your state, with your money,” he questioned the ruling BJP.

Condemning the “delay” by the BJP government in getting the necessary approvals for the Mahadayi project, the Congress today is holding a massive rally in Hubballi to highlight the issue.

Recently, the Union government had approved Karnataka’s detailed project report (DPR) on the Kalasa-Banduri (Mahadayi) project, which was opposed by Goa.

Karnataka wants to use the Mahadayi river water from its tributaries Kalasa and Banduri to supply water to drought-hit districts of north Karnataka.

The proposed project will use 3.9 tmc water – 2.18 tmc from Banduri and 1.72 tmc from Kalasa river canals – for drinking water needs.

Players can now afford drivers, should be more careful: Kapil Dev on Pant accident

January 3, 2023 by Nasheman

New Delhi: The legendary Kapil Dev believes any cricketer representing the country like Rishabh Pant should be “more careful” and hire drivers instead of getting behind the wheels to avoid the mishap that happened last week.

Kapil made the statement while reacting to Pant’s horrifying accident on Friday while driving his Mercedes on NH-58. The wicket-keeper batter is currently admitted in Max Dehradun with multiple injuries on head, back, knee and ankle. He was on Monday shifted from ICU to a private ward.

“We can avoid things that can lead to mishaps like these,” Kapil was quoted as saying by ABP News.

“Especially for these special players. I remember during my early playing days, I was riding a bike and met with an accident following which my brother never let me ride one.

“The players should be careful. They don’t need to drive themselves. They can afford drivers. I know a lot of people are passionate about driving but when one has so many responsibilities, one must take care of oneself,” the 63-year-old stated.

Pant’s injuries, especially the ones on knee and ankle, will keep him out of action for a minimum period of six months.

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi dares BJP to celebrate ‘Demonetisation Day’

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi dares BJP to celebrate 'Demonetisation Day'
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi

Hyderabad: Hitting out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over demonetisation, president of AIMIM (All-India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen) president Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday challenged the BJP to celebrate ‘Demonetisation Day.’

He slammed the Modi government over the reason cited for the demonetisation that was decided upon to primarily check flow of black money, among others. He claimed demonetisation affected the economy.

According to Owaisi, the decision (on demonetisation) was wrong as it led to a decline in the growth of the GDP to 4 per cent in 2019-2020 from 8.3 per cent in 2016-17.

“We want to tell the Prime Minister why don’t you celebrate ‘Demonetisation Day’. If demonetisation was a success and if they think it was a success we challenge the BJP why don’t they celebrate ‘Demonetisation Day’. The Prime Minister knows that women, daily wage workers, artisans, drivers, electricians, and masons were affected owing to demonetisation. Why doesn’t the BJP celebrate ‘Notebandi Divas’,” the Hyderabad MP told reporters here.

Quoting a report, Owaisi said 50 lakh people lost employment. “After demonetisation, people took loans. Prime Minister shrunk the workforce and that showed his incompetence. Today, 32.18 lakh crore of currency is in circulation as against 17.97 lakh crore (during that time),” Owaisi said.

The Supreme Court in a 4:1 verdict today upheld the decision to demonetise the Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes by saying the decision-making process was not flawed.

Observing that the decision being an economic policy of the executive cannot be reversed, a 5-judge Constitutional Bench headed by Justice S A Nazeer said there has to be restraint in matters of such a policy and the court cannot supplant the wisdom of the executive by a judicial review of its decision.

Justice B V Nagarathna differed from the majority judgment by invoking the RBI Act, saying the scrapping of high-value currency notes should have been done through legislation not a notification.
