Rahul Gandhi questions surge in Adani’s fortunes, claims it happened after BJP came to power

February 8, 2023 by Nasheman

New Delhi: A belligerent Rahul Gandhi Tuesday led a blistering opposition attack in Lok Sabha over the Hindenburg report, claiming that the meteoric rise in Gautam Adani’s fortunes happened after the BJP came to power in 2014 as he rose in the global rich list from the 609th to the second spot eventually.

The Congress leader’s remarks drew a sharp response from the treasury benches, with Law Minister Kiren Rijiju asking him not to level “wild allegations” and to furnish proof of his claims.

Outside Parliament, BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad accused Rahul Gandhi of making baseless, shameless and reckless allegations and charged that the Congress and the Gandhi family were involved in “big scams” that “tarnished” the image of the country.

Speaker Om Birla disapproved of the Congress leader displaying certain pictures in the House.

“If you show posters, they (BJP) will show posters of the Rajasthan chief minister (with Adani). Parliament is not for these things,” Birla said.

Participating in the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address in Lok Sabha as the first Opposition speaker, Gandhi made a barrage of allegations against Modi.

He asked how much money Adani has given to the BJP in the last 20 years, including through electoral bonds.

Speaker Birla asked Gandhi to focus on the President’s address.

“There should be a case study on Adani by business schools such as Harvard, on how the relationship between business and politics works, India is a case study,” Gandhi said.

He also hit out at Modi for slamming the Opposition over its criticism of the Rafale deal by allegedly overlooking the capabilities of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

“Yesterday, the prime minister said at HAL that we hurled wrong allegations. But in reality, HAL’s contract of 126 aircraft went to Anil Ambani, who then went bankrupt,” Gandhi said.

Gandhi, who just completed his over 4,000-km Bharat Jodo Yatra, said people asked him how Adani got into so many businesses and succeeded.

“From Tamil Nadu, Kerala to Himachal Pradesh, Kashmir, we have been hearing one name everywhere ‘Adani’. Across the entire country, it’s just ‘Adani’, ‘Adani’, ‘Adani’…,” Gandhi said.

He said that during the yatra people also asked him how Adani’s net worth increased from USD 8 billion to USD 140 billion between 2014 and 2022.

“In 2014, he was in 609th spot on the list of richest people and climbed to the second spot,” the former Congress chief said.

Gandhi also raised the issue of the report by US-based Hindenburg Research, saying it alleged that Adani has shell companies abroad.

Pointing out that Adani works in strategic sectors, he said the government must find out about these shell companies as to who controls them as this is a national security issue.

The Opposition has been demanding a joint parliamentary committee probe or a Supreme Court-monitored investigation into the allegations of fraud and manipulation made by Hindenburg Research against Adani’s companies that triggered an unprecedented stock crash. The group has denied the charges.

Gandhi alleged that the government tweaked rules in favour of Adani and said the clause that no one without any prior experience would be involved in the development of airports was done away with.

“This rule was changed by the government and Adani was given six airports. After that India’s most strategic, profitable airport, Mumbai Airport, was taken away from GVK using agencies,” he alleged.

“The result is 24 per cent of India’s air traffic and 31 per cent of air freight passes through Adani’s airports,” Gandhi said.

The treasury benches repeatedly asked Gandhi to authenticate his claims, saying that such allegations cannot be levelled against the government without documentary evidence.

“Adani never made drones while HAL used to do it and other companies do it. They have four defence firms and had not done this work before, small arms, sniper rifles, all are made by Adani,” he said.

Adani group has a 30 per cent market share in the airports business and also controls 90 per cent of Israel-India defence cooperation, he claimed.

“I was asked by the people during the Yatra as to why LIC’s money is being put into the Adani group. They also asked why LIC’s funds are being put in Adani’s shares, which are volatile,” he said.

Participating in the debate, Gandhi also questioned the Agniveer scheme for recruiting defence personnel claiming that youths aspiring to be in the army were not on the same page as the government on the scheme.

Senior officers have said the scheme will weaken the army and it came from outside the Army, from the RSS and Home ministry, he claimed.

“They said that the Agniveer scheme came from outside and (National Security Advisor) Ajit Doval had forced it on the forces,” Gandhi said, evoking objections from the treasury benches which claimed that the official’s name should not be taken.

He said the main concerns of the people such as unemployment and price rise were not even mentioned in the president’s address.

Speaker Birla said that comments should not be made outside the House that mics are turned off, to which Gandhi said, “It is the reality that you do turn off the mics.”

Congress and its leaders were involved in all big scams which tarnished the image of India, he alleged.

Quake deaths pass 5,000 as Turkiye, Syria seek survivors

Quake deaths pass 5,000 as Turkiye, Syria seek survivors

Adana (Turkiye) (AP): Rescuers raced Tuesday to find survivors in the rubble of thousands of buildings brought down by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake and multiple aftershocks that struck eastern Turkiye and neighbouring Syria, with the discovery of more bodies raising the death toll to more than 5,000.

Countries around the world dispatched teams to assist in the rescue efforts, and Turkiye’s disaster management agency said more than 24,400 emergency personnel were now on the ground.

But with such a wide swath of territory hit by Monday’s earthquake and nearly 6,000 buildings confirmed to have collapsed in Turkiye alone, their efforts were spread thin.

Attempts to reach survivors were also impeded by temperatures below freezing and close to 200 aftershocks, which made the search through unstable structures perilous.

Nurgul Atay told The Associated Press she could hear her mother’s voice beneath the rubble of a collapsed building in the city of Antakya, the capital of Hatay province, but that her and others efforts to get into the ruins had been futile without any rescue crews and heavy equipment to help.

“If only we could lift the concrete slab we’d be able to reach her,” she said. “My mother is 70-years-old, she won’t be able to withstand this for long.”

Across Hatay province, just southwest of the earthquake’s epicentre, officials say as many as 1,500 buildings were destroyed and many people reported relatives being trapped under the rubble with no aid or rescue teams arriving.

In areas where teams worked, occasional cheers broke out through the night as survivors were brought out of the rubble.

The quake, which was centered in Turkey’s southeastern province of Kahramanmaras, sent residents of Damascus and Beirut rushing into the street and was felt as far away as Cairo.

Sebastien Gay, the head of mission in Syria for Doctors Without Borders, said health facilities in northern Syria were overwhelmed with medical personnel working around “around the clock to respond to the huge numbers of wounded.”

In Turkiye’s Hatay province, thousands of people sheltered in sports centers or fair halls, while others spent the night outside, huddled in blankets around fires.

Turkiye has large numbers of troops in the border region with Syria and has tasked the military to aid in the rescue efforts, including setting up tents for the homeless and a field hospital in Hatay province.

Defence Minister Hulusi Akar said a humanitarian aid brigade based in Ankara and eight military search and rescue teams had also been deployed.

A navy ship docked on Tuesday at the province’s port of Iskenderun, where a hospital collapsed, to transport survivors in need of medical care to the nearby city of Mersin.

Thick, black smoke rose from another area of the port, where firefighters have not yet been able to douse a fire that broke out among shipping containers that were toppled by the earthquake.

In the Turkish city of Gaziantep, a provincial capital about 33 kilometers (20 miles) from the epicenter, people took refuge in shopping malls, stadiums, mosques and community centers.

Turkiye’s Vice President Fuat Oktay said the total number of deaths in the country had risen to 3,419, with another 20,534 people injured.

The death toll in government-held areas of Syria climbed to 812 people, with some 1,450 injured, according to the Health Ministry.

In the country’s rebel-held northwest, the opposition’s Syrian Civil Defence, or White Helmets, the paramedic group leading rescue operations, said that at least 790 were killed and more than 2,200 injured.

That brought the overall total to 5,021.

Authorities fear the death toll will keep climbing as the rescuers look for survivors among tangles of metal and concrete spread across the region beset by Syria’s 12-year civil war and refugee crisis.

In the latest pledges of international help, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said he was preparing to swiftly dispatch a 60-person search and rescue team as well as medical supplies and 50 soldiers.

Pakistan’s government sent a flight carrying relief supplies and a 50-member search and rescue team early Tuesday, and said there will be daily aid flights to Syria and Turkiye from Wednesday.

India said it would send two search and rescue teams, including specially trained dogs and medical personnel.

Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will travel to Ankara Wednesday to express his condolences and solidarity, according to a statement from Islamabad.

U.S. President Joe Biden called Erdogan to express condolences and offer assistance to the NATO ally.

The White House said it was sending search-and-rescue teams to support Turkiye’s efforts.

The quake piled more misery on a region that has seen tremendous suffering over the past decade.

On the Syrian side, the affected area is divided between government-controlled territory and the country’s last opposition-held enclave, which is surrounded by Russian-backed government forces.

Turkiye is home to millions of refugees from the Syrian civil war.

In the rebel-held enclave, hundreds of families remained trapped in rubble, the opposition emergency organisation known as the White Helmets said in a statement.
The area is packed with some 4 million people displaced from other parts of the country by the war.

Many live in buildings that are were already damaged by military bombardments.

Strained medical centers quickly filled with injured people, rescue workers said. Some facilities had to be emptied, including a maternity hospital, according to the SAMS medical organization.

More than 7,800 people were rescued across 10 provinces, according to Orhan Tatar, an official with Turkiye’s disaster management authority.

The region sits on top of major fault lines and is frequently shaken by earthquakes.

Some 18,000 were killed in similarly powerful earthquakes that hit northwest Turkiye in 1999.

The U.S. Geological Survey measured Monday’s quake at 7.8, with a depth of 18 kilometers (11 miles).

Hours later, another quake, likely triggered by the first, struck more than 100 kilometers (60 miles) away with 7.5 magnitude.

The second jolt caused a multi-story apartment building in the Turkish city of Sanliurfa to topple onto the street in a cloud of dust as bystanders screamed, according to video of the scene.

Thousands of buildings were reported collapsed in a wide area extending from Syria’s cities of Aleppo and Hama to Turkiye’s Diyarbakir, more than 330 kilometers (200 miles) to the northeast. (AP)

Jodhpur : A group of villagers in Rajasthan’s Jalore district allegedly caught a man who had come to visit a girl, tied him to a tree, thrashed him and poured urine into his mouth, police said on Tuesday.

They have detained six people after a video of the assault surfaced on social media. They also slapped a case against the man under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

According to the police, the victim had allegedly come to meet a girl in a nearby village on Sunday night. He was caught and beaten up brutally after being tied to a tree by the villagers and family members of the girl.

On receiving information, the family members of the man also reached the spot and pleaded the mob to spare him. But the villagers poured urine into his mouth before letting him off with a warning, they said.

Google to launch ChatGPT competitor ‘Bard’: Sundar Pichai

Google to launch ChatGPT competitor 'Bard': Sundar Pichai
Google CEO Sundar Pichai

New York: Google CEO Sundar Pichai has announced that the tech giant will soon launch an Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered chatbot called Bard’, aimed at countering the popularity of the ChatGPT tool backed by Microsoft.

According to a blog post by Pichai, the conversational AI service will be assessed by a group of “trusted testers” before being rolled out to the public in the coming weeks.

“Bard can be an outlet for creativity, and a launchpad for curiosity,” Pichai, the Indian-origin CEO of Google and parent company Alphabet, said on Monday, adding that Google’s chatbot will be able to explain complex subjects like new discoveries from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to a nine-year-old.

Google’s announcement follows wide speculation that Microsoft is about to bring the AI chatbot ChatGPT to its search engine Bing, following a multi-billion dollar investment in the firm behind it, OpenAI, the BBC reported.

ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer), which was launched in November 2022, is capable of generating speeches, songs, marketing copy, news articles and student essays or human-like text based on the input it is given.

Bard, built on Google’s existing large language model LaMDA, “seeks to combine the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence, and creativity of our large language models”, Pichai, 50, said in the blog.

AI chatbots are designed to answer questions and find information.

“Bard seeks to combine the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence, and creativity of our large language models,” Pichai said in the blog post.

Pichai said he wanted Google’s AI services to be “bold with innovation and responsible in our approach”. However, he did not elaborate on how Bard would be prevented from sharing harmful or abusive content.

He said that Google will initially release Bard with a “lightweight model” version of LaMDA which will require less computing power and enable the tech giant to scale to more users, allowing for more feedback.

“We’re excited for this phase of testing,” Pichai said, adding that Google will combine external feedback with internal testing to make sure Bard’s responses meet a high bar for quality, safety and groundedness in real-world information.

“It’s critical that we bring experiences rooted in these models to the world in a bold and responsible way. That’s why we’re committed to developing AI responsibly,” he wrote in the blog.

Pichai also said on Monday that AI-powered tools will soon begin rolling out on Google’s flagship Search tool.

“Soon, you’ll see AI-powered features in Search that distil complex information and multiple perspectives into easy-to-digest formats, so you can quickly understand the big picture and learn more from the web,” Pichai wrote, “whether that’s seeking out additional perspectives, like blogs from people who play both piano and guitar, or going deeper on a related topic, like steps to get started as a beginner.”

Never blamed all Brahmins: HDK clarifies after controversial statement on Pralhad Joshi

Never blamed all Brahmins: HDK clarifies after controversial statement on Pralhad Joshi

Bengaluru: Days after his controversial statement that Union Minister Pralhad Joshi belonged to a sect of Brahmins which desecrated the Sringeri Shankaracharya Peeth and assassinated Mahatma Gandhi, former Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy on Tuesday said his statement was misconstrued as he had not blamed all Brahmins.

The second-in-command of Janata Dal (Secular) also said he always had the portraits of some iconic religious leaders who belonged to the Brahmin community.

“I never did caste-based politics. I never asked people their caste whenever they approached me for help. I am not the one who insults people for their caste. The Brahmin community is leading life in a cultured manner,” Kumaraswamy clarified days after the statement sparked a controversy drawing criticism.

Explaining further, the JD(S) leader said he had only referred to those who had attacked the Chandramauleshwara temple in Sringeri, a section which assassinated Mahatma Gandhi and Maratha ruler Shivaji.

He said those who were behind these incidents were not from Karnataka but neighbouring state of Maharashtra.

Kumaraswamy also said his outburst was due to the poor way the border dispute pertaining to Belagavi was handled.

“The way you are taking Belagavi, all these things keeping in mind, I had given a statement. My statement was not to hurt any community,” Kumaraswamy said.

Showing the portrait of Adiguru Shankaracharya, who had established the Sringeri Peeth, which adorns his office, the JD(S) leader said, “You can see whose photographs we have in our office. The same photographs you can find in my bedroom as well.”

Two days ago, Kumaraswamy had claimed that RSS was “conspiring” to make Joshi, who is Union Minister for Coal and Mines, the chief minister of Karnataka along with eight deputies after the Assembly polls, and alleged the latter belonged to a category among Brahmins, who lacked culture and divides society.

Coming down heavily on Joshi for criticising JD(S)’ dynasty politics and its ‘Pancharatna Ratha Yatra’, the former Chief Minister had said he (Joshi) belongs to a Brahmin sect to which Maratha Peshwas belonged that had allegedly destroyed Sringeri Math, established by Adi Shankaracharya and desecrated the idol there, and also that killed Gandhi.

To a question, Kumaraswamy exuded confidence that his party will get a clear majority in the upcoming Assembly elections.

Regarding Hassan Assembly constituency where his sister-in-law Bhavani Revanna is keen to contest election despite the first family’s unwillingness to field her, Kumaraswamy said, “There is no confusion. An easy solution will come out regarding Hassan.”

He blamed a ‘section’ which was creating confusion, who are always there on all the occasions.

“How much ever that section tries, it will never succeed. I know how to set right things. We have the backing of divine power, which led to the formation of our government twice though we were in minority.”

Journalist beaten to death during fracas over serving hot food in UP

February 8, 2023 by Nasheman

Kanpur (UP): A cameraperson for a national Hindi news channel died after an alleged brawl with a catering staff at a wedding, police said on Tuesday.

The incident took place Monday in Rahmatpur village in the Bilhaur police station area of this Uttar Pradesh district.

Identified as Swatantra Kushwaha alias Muni (39), a resident of Rawatpur village, the cameraman had an altercation with the catering staff over serving hot food, Billhaur Station House Officer (SHO) Surendra Singh said.

A preliminary probe suggested that the catering staff had a fight with Kushwaha who fell on the ground and sustained head injury, he said.

He was immediately taken to Lala Lajpat Rai (LLR) hospital where he breathed his last, the SHO added.

The autopsy has been performed to find out the exact cause of death but the police are yet to receive the findings of the report, he said.

Billhaur Police has lodged an FIR on charges of murder against unidentified persons and efforts are being made to make arrests at the earliest.

A probe has been launched and at least six suspects, with whom Kushwaha allegedly had a brawl, have been detained, he said.

Pandemic sees rise in online consultations users mostly women, young adults

February 8, 2023 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI: The Covid pandemic saw a rapid rise in online consultations in India, mostly among women, with over 65 per cent of them opting for this quick and easy way to meet their urgent medical needs, a new survey has said.

After women, it was young adults, below 25, who wanted guidance about their sexual-related health problems, said the survey, which was conducted from data collated from 111 million interactions that happened between users and doctors on the Lybrate platform, a healthcare digital platform, in 2022.

The survey also found that online consultations have jumped by 87 per cent in tier-II and tier-III cities like Jaipur, Ahmedabad, and Lucknow, while metro cities witnessed a 75 per cent increase in the same period.

“The last two years have seen a rapid increase in online doctor consultations. Telemedicine has given patients more accessible access to primary health care,” the study said

Online appointments by women grew over 65 per cent in 2022 as compared to 2021, the study said, adding that most women consulted specialities including gastroenterologists and ENT, which grew by over 150 per cent

This was followed by dermatologists and internal medicine, which grew by 125 per cent, psychiatry and paediatrics by 110 per cent each and gynaecology consultations grew by 100 per cent in 2022, the study said.

The study said young adults under 25 are more curious about sexual health-related guidance and many of them posted queries on the platform, including on masturbation addiction, STDs, pregnancy and Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), a common condition that affects hormones, and causes irregular menstrual periods, excess hair growth, acne and infertility.

The data also showed that people between the ages of 25-45 majorly booked consultations for their kids or for issues related to sexual or mental health. Those above 45 years primarily seek consultations on chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, post-Covid-19 complications and thyroid-related ailments.

Some of the highest searched keywords among men across age groups were masturbation addiction, penile enlargement and erectile dysfunction, the study added.

Meanwhile, PCOS, healthy pregnancy and irregular periods were the highest searched keywords among women across India.

Harsimarbir Singh, co-founder of Pristyn Care, said, “The pandemic has brought a massive shift in patient behaviour, especially most of them seeking medical consultations and communicating with doctors online and offline.”

“We are not only witnessing a great demand for online consultations, but offline consultations have also jumped and have shown two times growth over the past year. It is encouraging to see that Indians are becoming more and more health conscious,” he said.

Bengaluru outskirts have high levels of radioactive radon in groundwater

February 8, 2023 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: Researchers who gathered in a training programme on “Health in a Changing Climate: Empowering health professionals” at the Indian Institute of Science brought to light the high radon content in groundwater used for drinking in some areas in the outskirts of Bengaluru.  This radon emanates from radioactive granites. Radon when ingested over an extended period can increase the risk of lung cancer.

According to experts, radon derives naturally from uranium through radioactive decay to radium and radon.

Radon is found to be 50 to 100 times the permissible limit of 11.1 Bq per litre as per initial studies by the researchers.  This finding has drawn increased attention to the study of radon in drinking water.

As radon comes naturally from uranium, the researchers realised uranium content could be high too. They found high content of uranium in groundwater, in some part in the outskirts of Bengaluru, including Chikkaballapur, Kolar, Chintamani and Pavagada.

Researchers said the level of uranium is found to be up to 300 micrograms per litre in the water against the permissible limit of 60 micrograms per litre, in some parts of city outskirts. In Chikkaballapur, Kolar and Chintamani it ranges from 5000-6000 micrograms per litre. “The measure of radon is being studied as it is a matter of concern,” the reaearcher said.

Radon in the air is not a major matter of concern if the area is well-ventilated. It should not accumulate indoors, said Prof R Srinivasan, from Divecha Centre for Climate Change (DCCC), IISc. He was speaking to The New Indian Express on the sidelines of the first day of the two-day-long training programme.

Radon in air, and uranium in water can cause cancer of lungs and kidneys.

The presence of radon in air and water leads to damage of lung tissues, threatening cancer of the lungs while the presence of uranium affects the urinary tract leading to kidney cancer.

No further studies on radon: Officials

Dr. H. Paramesh, World Health Organization Consultant and Professor at DCCC also confirmed that initial studies have found uranium in some places at Chikkaballapur to be 1000, against the permitted levels of 30-60 micrograms per litre.

Interestingly while some officials at Groundwater Board, now retired had studied the presence of Radon in water, present working officials admitted that they have not taken up further studies on it.

Srinivasan said attention was also being paid on how to dispose off waste water after treatment as it also has high content of uranium.

He said studies on the wastewater of reverse osmosis (RO) units have found high content of Uranium and has been a matter of concern.

Researchers also said that uranium comes from minerals like pitchblende, zircon, monazite among others in the rocks of the region.
