Congress defeats BJP in Nagpur MLC polls

February 3, 2023 by Nasheman

MUMBAI:  In a surprise result, the BJP has lost the MLC elections to the Congress party in its home turf Nagpur and other constituencies in Maharashtra. Out of total five teacher and graduate constituencies; BJP has won only one in Konkan region seat on Thursday.

“This is a big victory for the Congress party for the first time in the last 56 years in Nagpur where RSS headquarter is located. Nagpur is the home town of union minister Nitin Gadkari, deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and Maharashtra BJP president Chandrashekar Bawankule. Therefore, this victory of Congress against BJP has a lot more meaning,” said Ashish Dua, Congress organizational general secretary.

Interestingly, Congress candidate Sudhakar Anabole won Nagpur teachers constituency by defeating BJP supported RSS affiliated teachers organization candidate Nago Ganar. The old pension scheme has played a major role in the defeat of the BJP. “The teachers and graduates have flatly rejected the BJP. We are confident that in upcoming elections also, Maha Vikas Aghdi will win the elections,” Ajit Pawar added.

Jaipur Diary: Rajnikanth in Jaisalmer to shoot ‘Jailor’

February 3, 2023 by Nasheman

Actor Rajnikanth at the trailer release event of 'Darbar' in Mumbai.

‘What happened to resignation of 90 MLAs?’
Answering to a question asked by the Rajasthan High Court on what decision the Assembly Speaker CP Joshi has taken on the resignations of Congress MLAs in September last year pending before him, he argued that the 81 resignations were not voluntary. BJP MLA Rajendra Rathore had filed a petition before the HC seeking direction to the Speaker to decide on the resignations given by MLAs of the ruling Congress party. Experts say that this defense in the court is just a legal cover up for the political move that was made to keep the CM chair for Ashok Gehlot and deny Sachin Pilot a chance to takeover.

Devpt-oriented budget meets Karnataka’s expectations: CM

February 3, 2023 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Thursday called the recent Union Budget development-oriented and said it has met the State Government’s expectations in all key sectors. Addressing the media here, Bommai said the biggest challenge before his government is to give matching grants for the schemes announced which will be done in the state budget to be presented on February 17.

He further said that the Central assistance of Rs 5,300 crore announced for the Upper Bhadra Project will come without any conditions. Bommai said that as per the State Government’s expectations, the Union Budget presented by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has stressed on priority sectors like rural development, agriculture, Railways and infrastructure along with housing and irrigation.

“Our demand was to get more grants for sectors like agriculture financing and rural infrastructure which we have got. Also, we had asked for priority to be given to rural infrastructure. This has been done through Jal Jeevan Mission and PM Awas Yojna,” Bommai said.

On the Mekedatu project, the CM said the then Congress government committed a mistake in the initial stage of preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR). “When they prepared the DPR, they had said there was no issue… but now it is before the Supreme Court. We have allocated funds for the project. If the Supreme Court allows (to go ahead with the project) and if we get approval for DPR, we will take up the work,” he said.

The CM also said the Union Budget has increased grants to several schemes. “Skill development for youth was one of our concerns… the budget has given priority to it. It also allocated Rs 2.4 lakh crore for Railways. Also, the allocation for MGNREGA has not decreased. Such steps will help Karnataka,” he said.

On Namma Metro works, Bommai said that the government is preparing DPR for Phase-4 which will provide Metro service to rural areas of Bengaluru. Bommai also hailed the budget for sanctioning Rs 5,300 crore in assistance for the Upper Bhadra Project. There was a demand for the project since the 1960s, but was initiated during the BJP regime led by BS Yediyurappa in 2008, he added.

Hitting out at the Opposition’s apprehension regarding the announcement in the budget, Bommai said the Upper Bhadra project has a status ‘national project’ today, and without any conditions Rs 5,300 crore has been allocated for it in the budget by the Modi government.

PM likely to meet Biden in mid 2023, ahead of key SCO and G20 summits

February 3, 2023 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI:  Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to embark on a state visit to the United States in the middle of this year as he has ‘received’ an invitation from US President Joe Biden. The official visit may happen in June or July, a source said.

“With his busy programme plan this year, due to scheduled visits of leaders like Australian President Anthony Albanese in March, the SCO and G20 summits and others – including for Quad to Australia and G7 to Japan, PM Modi may just about manage a few days in either June or July, as President Biden is keen on his visiting the US,’’ a source said.

The Union Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has said that high level visits are announced closer to the date and time. It has been reported that the state visit will include an address to the joint session of the US Congress and a state dinner at the White House.

In light of the India-US partnership which is not just relevant for bilateral trade, but also for partnership in the Indo-Pacific, Quad and other platforms, this visit will be significant. Modi is expected to meet Biden for the Quad Summit in Australia, for the G20 Summit in New Delhi and for the G7 Summit in Japan this year.

Meanwhile, India’s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and his American counterpart Jake Sullivan launched the India-US initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies or iCET, described by officials as the “Next Big Thing” in the bilateral relationship. Commenting on this meeting, the top US administrative official said, “While geopolitics is one dimension of what’s happening here, this is sort of more significant, bigger than that.”

Karnataka Assembly elections: Sri Rama Sene wants BJP to support Mutalik in Karkala

February 3, 2023 by Nasheman

UDUPI/MANGALURU: With Assembly elections approaching, the Udupi and Dakshina Kannada units of Sri Rama Sene have urged the BJP not to field candidates from the Karkala constituency and instead support Sene chief Pramod Mutalik.

Sene Udupi district unit spokesperson Sharath Poojary said Mutalik will contest the elections from Karkala as an Independent candidate.

“If the BJP has any presence in the coastal and north Karnataka regions now, it is because of Mutalik’s contribution,” he added.

However, Poojary’s statement has been countered by Karkala BJP leader B Maniraj Shetty. He said that Mutalik may not even secure 3,000 votes if he contests from Karkala as an Independent. ‘’It is nothing but a pressure tactic by Muthalik and his team. Congress is backing his team… Mutalik’s team can now be called Congress’ B Team,” he added.

Meanwhile, addressing a press conference in Mangaluru, Sri Rama Sene state general secretary Anand Shetty Adyar said, “Hindu community is upset over increase in corruption, anti-Hindu policies, neglect of Hindutva leaders and false cases against them and are looking for a responsible and honest candidate like Mutalik.”

Lok Sabha adjourned till 2 pm due to Opp protests over Adani issue

February 3, 2023 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned till 2 pm on Friday due to opposition protests demanding a joint parliamentary committee probe into the fraud-allegation-triggered rout in Adani Group company stocks.

Soon after the House met for the day, opposition members were on their feet shouting slogans and demanding a probe into the tanking of the Adani Group scrips and sought a probe into the business practices of the corporate giant.

Speaker Om Birla appealed to members to participate in the discussions during the Question Hour, which he termed as significant.

He said the House will take up the Motion of Thanks to the president for her address at the beginning of the Budget session.

Birla said as it was the first address to the joint sitting of the House by the country’s first tribal woman president, all members should participate in it.

He said he was ready to give the opposition enough time to raise their issues if they give proper notice.

However, an unrelenting opposition continued their protests and sloganeering, forcing the Speaker to adjourn the proceedings till 2 pm.

Adani Group stocks have taken a beating on the bourses after the US short-seller Hindenburg Research made a litany of allegations last week in its report, including fraudulent transactions and share price manipulation at the Gautam Adani-led group, which has denied the charges.

The market losses of the Adani Group have risen to nearly USD 103 billion (about Rs 8.5 lakh crore).

Adani Enterprises shares suspended as price slumps again

February 3, 2023 by Nasheman

Adani Group, Adani

MUMBAI: Shares of Adani Group firms continued to remain weak for the seventh day running on Friday amid a host of negative events surrounding the companies.

The stock of Adani Enterprises tumbled 20 per cent to Rs 1,173.55 — its one-year low — on the BSE.

Shares of Adani Ports tanked 10 per cent, Adani Transmission (10 per cent), Adani Green Energy (10 per cent), Adani Power (5 per cent), Adani Total Gas (5 per cent), Adani Wilmar (4.99 per cent), NDTV (4.98 per cent), ACC (4.24 per cent) and Ambuja Cements (3 per cent).

The conglomerate’s combined market capitalisation has plummeted by more than $100 billion since US short-seller  which makes money by betting on shares falling — released an explosive report last week.

Adani himself has seen his fortune plummet by tens of billions of dollars, dumping him out of the real-times Forbes rich list top 10 and depriving him of his title as Asia’s richest person.

Adani late Wednesday cancelled a $2.5-billion stock sale meant to help reduce debt levels — long a concern — restore confidence and broaden its shareholder base.

Big banks including Credit Suisse and Citigroup have stopped accepting Adani bonds as collateral for loans to private clients, according to Bloomberg News.

That fuelled worries about how Adani will raise fresh funds, with Adani dollar bonds trading at distressed levels and signs of contagion in Indian markets increasing, Bloomberg reported.

According to Hindenburg Research, Adani has artificially boosted the share prices of its units by funnelling money into the stocks through offshore tax havens.

This “brazen accounting fraud scheme” is “the largest con in corporate history”, Hindenburg said.

Adani said it was the victim of a “maliciously mischievous” reputational attack and issued a 413-page statement on Sunday that it asserted showed Hindenburg’s claims were “nothing but a lie”.

Hindenburg said in response that Adani failed to answer most of the questions raised in its report.

Critics say Adani’s closeness to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, also from Gujarat state, has helped him win business and avoid proper oversight.

UDF claims food poisoning incidents on rise due to ‘incompetence’ of Kerala govt

February 2, 2023 by Nasheman

Thiruvananthapuram: The Congress-led UDF opposition on Wednesday alleged in the Kerala assembly that the ‘incompetence and mismanagement’ of the Left government was the reason for the food poisoning related deaths in the state.

Calling attention to the spate of food poisoning incidents in the state, the opposition claimed that recent events indicate that the LDF government has completely failed to implement the Food Safety Act.

The allegations were refuted by the state government with Health Minister Veena George contending that since the LDF government came to power in 2016, the number of inspections has increased manifold.

She said over 50,000 inspections were carried out last year alone and the state government has now brought in stringent measures, like the ‘Health Card’ for employees of eateries certifying they are healthy and free of contagious diseases.

Health cards would be mandatory from February 16 onwards and besides that, the state government has banned — effective from February 1 — the sale of food items without the “best before label”, she said in the House in response to the issue raised by senior Congress leader and MLA Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan.

Radhakrishnan claimed in the House that the Food Safety and Health departments instead of working in a coordinated manner, are going their separate ways to deal with the issue.

He also claimed that Kerala was number one in the country in food safety during the UDF rule and in 2022 it had slipped to the 6th position.

“There have been a lot of deaths. The mismanagement and incompetence of Food Safety department are the reason for this. Even the public see that.”

The Congress MLA alleged that adulterated dairy products, like milk, and expired or rotten meat were freely entering Kerala from other states, which indicated a lack of checking at the borders.

Moreover, with only three NABL accredited labs in the state, testing of collected samples gets delayed and proper results are not received, leading to the accused persons going scot free.

He further claimed that thousands of cases related to violation of food safety norms were pending in courts and delay in test results due to lack of sufficient labs were also resulting in the accused getting away without any punishment.

George acknowledged the prosecution related concern raised by the senior Congress leader and said that it has been decided to appoint a dedicated law officer in the Food Safety Commissioner’s office to address that issue.

She also said that implementing the Food Safety Act was a priority of the government for which it has recruited more officials, created a Special Task Force and was going to bring in a system for online monitoring of the complaints, action taken, etc.

The minister said that when the next survey is conducted by the Centre, Kerala would surely be at the number one spot in food safety.

Usman Khawaja left "stranded" in Australia due to visa issue as Aussie team leaves for India

Sydney: Australian batting star Usman Khawaja was on Wednesday left “stranded” in Australia as his teammates flew to India without him for the much anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Khawaja was left out of the group of players and staff members of the Australian team as he was denied a visa by India.

Pakistan-born Khawaja posted his ordeal on his social media handle with a comic picture. “Me waiting for my Indian Visa like … #stranded #dontleaveme #standard #anytimenow,” he posted.

It is understood Khawaja was the only player in the 17-man squad to be denied a visa after lodging the paperwork early last month.

Newcorp reports Khawaja’s visa was delayed by the Indian government, but that Cricket Australia hopes to have the ordeal resolved “soon”.

Govt to continue 50-year interest-free loans to states for another year: Sitharaman

New Delhi: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday announced that the Centre will continue 50-year interest-free loans to state governments for one more year.

She also said the enhanced capex of Rs 10 lakh crore for infrastructure development is at 3.3 per cent of the GDP.

Presenting the Budget for 2023-24, she said the newly established infrastructure finance secretariat will assist in attracting more private investment.

An expert committee will also be set up to make infrastructure classification and financing framework suitable for Amrit Kaal, she added.

On October 13 last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the Gati Shakti – National Master Plan, aimed at developing integrated infrastructure to reduce logistics costs.

All logistics and connectivity infrastructure projects, entailing investment of over Rs 500 crore, are routed through the NPG, constituted under the PM Gati Shakti initiative.

She also informed that the PM Primitive Vulnerable Tribal Group scheme would benefit 3.5 lakh tribals.
