Seattle becomes first US city to ban caste discrimination

February 22, 2023 by Nasheman

Seattle becomes first US city to ban caste discrimination

Washington: Seattle has become the first US city to outlaw caste discrimination after its local council passed a resolution, moved by an Indian-American politician and economist, to add caste to its non-discrimination policy.

The resolution moved by Kshama Sawant, an upper-caste Hindu, was approved by the Seattle City Council by six to one vote. The results of the vote could have far-reaching implications on the issue of caste discrimination in the US.

“It’s official: our movement has won a historic, first-in-the-nation ban on caste discrimination in Seattle! Now we need to build a movement to spread this victory around the country,” Sawant, a city council member, said soon after the resolution was voted.

Hours ahead of the vote, Indian-American Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal lent her support to the move.

“Caste discrimination has no place in society anywhere in the world, including here in America. That is why some colleges and universities have banned it on campuses, and workers are fighting for their rights and their dignity in cases involving caste discrimination,” she said.

Equality Labs, the brain behind the anti-caste discrimination resolution in Seattle and which has been spearheading a nationwide campaign said: “Love has won over hate as Seattle has become the first in the nation to ban caste discrimination. We have braved rape threats, death threats, disinformation, and bigotry.”

It has created a coalition of some 200 organisations in support of its efforts over the issue.

“Central to this coalition is a network of more than 30 anti-caste Ambedkarite organisations,” Equality Labs said. Among them are the Ambedkar King Study Circle, Ambedkar International Center, Ambedkarite Buddhist Association of Texas and Boston Study Group.

The Hindu American Foundation, which had campaigned against the resolution, said singling out South Asians and the addition of caste’ to the non-discrimination policy violates the very policies it now amends.

“The City of Seattle has voted to treat South Asians (and Southeast Asians and African) in a manner that no other ethnic or racial community is treated under the guise of non-discrimination. It has voted yes to discriminating against ethnic minorities, repeating the ugliness of nativists in the state nearly a century ago,” Suhag Shukla, co-founder and executive director of the Hindu American Foundation said.

In passing this resolution, Seattle is now in violation of the US Constitution’s guarantees of equal protection and due process that prohibit the state from treating disparately people on account of their national origin, ethnicity, or religion, and implementing a vague, facially discriminatory and arbitrary category, Shukla alleged.

“Seattle has taken a dangerous misstep here, institutionalising bias against all residents of Indian and South Asian origin, all in the name of preventing bias,” said HAF managing director Samir Kalra.

“When Seattle should be protecting the civil rights of all its residents, it is actually violating them by running roughshod over the most basic and fundamental rights in US law, all people being treated equally,” Kalra said.

Madhu T from Ambedkar-Phule Network of American Dalits and Bahujans said this “ill-intended and rushed” ordinance by a “controversial council member” will only harm South Asians in particular Dalits Bahujans.

“It is traumatising to witness that a propaganda which is no less than a war on Dalits, makes this far, with no data, and with a fraudulent survey, while the real Dalit Bahujan voices continue to go unheard,” said Madhu.

“2022 report by Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Johns Hopkins and the University of Pennsylvania not only discredited the caste survey referred by Seattle City Council, but it had shown that there are multiple reasons like ‘country of origin’, gender and ‘skin colour’ that need to be addressed as cause for discrimination. The ordinance will only increase the instances of hatred against South Asians, including Dalits,” said V Kadam from Dalit Bahujan Solidarity Network.

Many Indian-Americans fear that codifying caste in public policy will further fuel instances of Hinduphobia in the US.

Over the last three years, ten Hindu temples and five statues, including those of Mahatma Gandhi and Maratha emperor Shivaji, have been vandalised across the US as an intimidation tactic against the Hindu community.

Indian-Americans are the second-largest immigrant group in the US. According to data from the 2018 American Community Survey (ACS), which is conducted by the US Census Bureau, there are 4.2 million people of Indian origin residing in the United States.

India banned caste discrimination in 1948 and enshrined that policy in the Constitution in 1950.

Filing cases against rivals sign of coward: Manish Sisodia

February 22, 2023 by Nasheman

New Delhi: The more AAP will grow, the more cases will be filed against its leaders, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said on Wednesday after the Ministry of Home Affairs granted sanction to the CBI to prosecute him in a case of alleged collection of “political intelligence”.

In a communication to the principal secretary to the Delhi Lieutenant Governor, the home ministry said the sanction to prosecute Sisodia was granted under Section 17 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

“Filing false cases against one’s rivals is a sign of a weak and cowardly person. The more AAP will grow, the more cases will be filed against us,” he said in a tweet in Hindi.

Early this month, the CBI had said it found in its preliminary inquiry that the feedback unit (FBU) set up by the Delhi government to check corruption allegedly collected “political intelligence” and the agency recommended that an FIR be registered against Sisodia.

Chhattisgarh: Newly-married couple found dead with stab wounds before wedding reception

February 22, 2023 by Nasheman

Raipur: A newly-married couple was found dead with stab injuries on their bodies inside a room at their house just before their wedding reception in Chhattisgarh’s capital Raipur, police said on Wednesday.

Police suspect that a scuffle broke out between the duo, following which the man stabbed his wife to death before killing himself.

The incident took place at Brijnagar under Tikrapara police station limits late Tuesday evening, an official here said.

Aslam (24) and Kahkasha Bano (22) got married on Sunday and their wedding reception was scheduled to be held on Tuesday night.

The duo was getting ready for the function inside their room when the groom’s mother heard screams of the bride and rushed there, he said.

“The room was locked from inside and when the duo did not respond, the family members peeped through a window and found them lying unconscious in a pool of blood, following which they informed the police,” he said.

Police broke open the door and sent their bodies with stab injuries for post-mortem, he said, adding that a knife was recovered from the spot.

“Prima facie it seems that an argument broke out between the couple and the man attacked his wife with a knife and then killed himself,” he said.

However, an investigation into the matter is underway, he added.

Road-Side Assistance, a 24×7 365 days package further ensures prompt services in case of breakdown and towing situations.

BMW R nineT 100 Years: The great roadster tradition from BMW Motorrad in particularly refined and sophtisticated packaging.

The reduced design language of the R nineT is shaped by 100 years of motorcycle construction and BMW Motorrad’s unbroken passion for the boxer engine. Classic roadster design skilfully sets the scene with a compact tank and upright seating position as well as high-quality materials and stylish design elements. The new R nineT 100 Years becomes an exclusive anniversary edition thanks to numerous other special features. The heart is still the air/oil-cooled, 80 kW (109 hp) two-cylinder boxer engine. In the anniversary edition the legendary engine is accompanied by a wide range of options and an elaborate surface concept.

Classic Chrome and Option 719 Parts: High-grade paint-on-chrome surfaces and exquisite milled parts and wheels.

Paint finishes in combination with chrome surfaces also have an almost 100-year tradition in motorcycle construction. Chrome surfaces, usually consisting of a copper, nickel and final chrome layer are characterised by their hardness and resulting high durability, very good protection against corrosion, but above all by a radiant, mirror-like shine. This made chrome a common stylistic device for designers from the late 1920s onwards, in combination with high-quality paint concepts. The BMW R 75/5 with chrome-plated tank sides and side covers, for example, is legendary at BMW Motorrad. With the new BMW R nineT 100 Years and R 18 100 Years and the Classic Chrome surface concept, BMW Motorrad is reviving this incomparably sophisticated interplay of paint and chrome.

The tank is a combination of black with chrome and white double-lining and is complemented by knee pads and a 100 Years badge. Classic chrome is also found on the seat hump. The front wheel cover is also painted in black and features white double lining. The seat bench in two-tone combination black/oxblood rounds off the high-quality look.

Numerous black components such as fork tubes, air intake snorkel and some Option 719 components complement this harmoniously. The R nineT 100 Years includes the 719 Classic wheels option with black anodised rim rings, the Option 719 Shadow milled parts package with milled cylinder head covers, engine housing covers, seat holders, oil filler plug and the Option 719 Shadow II milled parts package, consisting of adjustable hand levers and a footrest system, pillion footrests as well as expansion tank covers and handlebar end mirrors. Adaptive turning light and the Comfort Package with heated grips, cruise control and Driving Modes Pro complete the extensive equipment of the edition model.

BMW R 18 100 Years: The big boxer stylishly designed using a special paintwork and surface concept with Classic Chrome.

The unmissable centrepiece of the R 18 100 Years is the 67 kW (91 hp) boxer engine with the largest displacement ever installed by BMW Motorrad. Both technically and visually, the BMW R 18 borrows from famous BMW models such as the BMW R 5 and puts the focus back on the essentials of motorcycling: Purist, no-frills technology and the boxer engine as the epicentre of riding pleasure. The big boxer is also complemented by numerous special features as well as a high-grade surface concept in the anniversary edition of the R 18.

The colour scheme of the R 18 100 Years, like that of the anniversary model of the R nineT, is in Classic Chrome and thus combines black paintwork and high-gloss chrome surfaces as well as white double lining and a 100 Years badge. The paint-on-chrome concept in Classic Chrome is also found on the rear wheel cover in combination with white double lining. The front wheel cover and the side covers are painted in black, complemented by white double lining on the front mudguard. The Option 719 seat upholstered in the bicolour combination black/oxblood with high-quality diamond embossing blends in harmoniously.

Black as a symbolic colour scheme of great BMW Motorrad tradition also adorns the engine, transmission housing and rear axle drive. The exact designation is Avus Black – a reminiscence of the legendary high-speed racetrack in Berlin, where BMW Motorrad once celebrated great racing successes and where the Avus monument with BMW Motorrad factory rider Ernst Henne still commemorates it today. Berlin is also home to the BMW Motorrad production plant. The plant located in Berlin-Spandau is not only a production site, it is also the lead plant for the international motorcycle production of BMW Motorrad.

The R 18 100 Years is complemented by numerous chrome parts from the Chrome design option. The high-quality and durable galvanic surface coating can be found on these parts: Handlebar fittings, gearshift and foot brake levers, handlebar clamps, handlebar weights, mirrors, brake master cylinders, brake calipers, engine casing covers, cylinder head covers and intake manifold trims.

Other features of the BMW R 18 100 Years also include chromed Akrapovič rear silencers with perforated tailpipe trims in the “propeller style” of the BMW brand logo. Safety and comfort are ensured by Headlight Pro with adaptive turning light, reversing aid, electronic cruise control and heated grips.

Improving Audit Quality

From 1st April 2023, the Chartered Accountant firms auditing any listed entity or a banking company or an insurance company will have to compulsorily assess their audit quality maturity using the AQMM rev v1.0. The AQMM v1.0 had been launched as a self-evaluation model in July, 2021 whereby the firms were recommended to undertake the evaluation.

It has been decided that the scores and the level obtained using the AQMM rev v1.0 shall be reviewed by a peer /AQMM reviewer and thereafter the level of the firm shall be hosted on the website of the ICAI alongside the details of the peer review certificate.

The AQMM is an amalgamation of a well-researched set of Audit Quality Indicators (AQIs) developed under the aegis of the Centre for Audit Quality. It not only helps the firms to arrive at their current maturity level but also provides a mechanism for helping and guiding the firms for improving upon their audit quality by identifying the strength/ improvement areas. The firms can develop a road map for upgrading to a higher level of maturity based on the scores obtained using the model.

The Council, after deliberating at length on the suggestions received from stakeholders on draft Scheme, approved the Proposed Scheme of Education and Training with certain modifications. The Scheme so approved by the Council has been submitted to the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, along with the corresponding amendments in Regulations for final approval.

This is for the first time the CA course is being revised in 5 years instead of 10 years, as per past practice. The role of a chartered accountant is undergoing a significant change to assume newer responsibilities in a dynamic environment. There has been a marked shift towards strategic decision making and entrepreneurial roles that add value beyond financial recording and reporting. We believe that this association is in are synergies in the work WICCI would like to invite  Skill Development Partners – SAATHIYA for this event and see if there are any synergies in the future, from this association with Vega & Baton.”

Meenu Vadera, Founder, Azad Foundation & Sakha Consulting Wings shared, “When we started Azad Foundation in 2008, there were few women chauffeurs in India. Azad set out to address the structural barriers that prevented women from joining the workforce including mobility restrictions, violence at home and in public places and the burden of unpaid care work. Today, we humbly share that Azad has successfully trained over 3500 resource-poor women as professional chauffeurs through its transformative skill-building Women with Wheels program. More than 2000 of these women are currently employed as professional chauffeurs and riders and are claiming their space in industries like e-commerce delivery and public transport, which have traditionally been closed for women.”

Azad’s strategic partner Sakha actively promotes opportunities and markets for women drivers in transport and e-commerce industry. More than 2000 women drivers have become chief wage earners in their families, provided 1.8m+ safe rides and earned a cumulative income of over $2.4 Million. These women have built assets, repaid debts, invested in the education of the next generation and challenged violence in their homes, communities and on the road. In 2022, the revision in the criteria for the entry of women in Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) was a landmark victory for women drivers, a result of Azad & Sakha’s close engagement with the Transport Ministry for gender inclusive public transport. Tens of women are now plying public buses and this number will only go up, breaking a glass ceiling in an occupation that has been dominated by only men.

Sharing her views, Vandana Suri, Founder, Taxshe, shared, “Taxshe is a World Bank Award winning organisation focussing on safe mobility solutions for women and kids. One of our business model is that we run women cabs exclusively for women and kids. We are alternate moms dropping kids to schools and tuitions, cab is just the logistics. On the other hand, we run ‘Taxshe Breakfree’ where we have women teaching women how to drive, their own cars at their own pace. We believe that if we have more women on the roads, safer is our ecosystem.”

The 36-year-old Sania, who turned Pro in 2003, walks out of competitive tennis with six Grand Slam titles, including three women’s doubles with Swiss legend Martina Hingis.

She won two of her three mixed doubles with compatriot Mahesh Bhupathi (2009 Australian Open and 2012 French Open). She won the US Open trophy with Bruno Soares.

The breaks were traded at swift pace in the opening set which was locked at 4-4.

From there, Kudermetova and Samsonova broke the pair of Sania and Keys one more time for a 5-4 lead, placing themselves in a position from where they could serve out the set.

They did that quite comfortably, losing one point in the 10th game.

Sania and her partner were broken in the very first game of the second set and it was one-way traffic after that as they were bageled.

India records 1,156 forest fires in a week NASA

February 22, 2023 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI: With temperatures soaring above normal, India witnessed a whopping 1,156 forest fires last week, pulling down the air quality index significantly. As many as 12 Indian states had significant forest fire incidents so far (see map).

According to NASA’s Fire Information for Resource Management System, the spatial resolution of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite satellite shows forest fire incidents across India, with high concentration in parts of South India, Odisha and the Northeast. Chances of fires originating from burning farm residue are remote since the rabi harvesting season is yet to start.

“If you superimpose NASA’s images with that of the air quality index, you will can easily correlate the forest fires with the poor air quality,” says Chandra Bhushan, a Delhi-based environmentalist. According to Swiss firm IQAir, air quality in India at 9 pm on Tuesday fell into the severe to unhealthy category in cities like Delhi, Gandhinagar, Kolkata, Mumbai, Hosur and Mullanpur (see table).

High temperatures and extreme dryness create conditions for a natural fire. During the past week (13-20 Feb), maximum temperatures in the 35-390C range prevailed over Gujarat, Maharashtra, West Rajasthan and Goa and coastal Karnataka, which is 4-90C above normal. Temperatures are climbing by 5-90C above normal even in the North.

MLAs demand govt act against NLSIU over domicile seat issue

February 22, 2023 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: Cutting across party lines, MLAs demanded that the Karnataka government take measures to implement 25 per cent domicile reservation for Kannadiga students at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) in Bengaluru. They pointed out that of 24 National Law Colleges and Universities in India, NLSIU in Karnataka is the only one which does not provide reservations for local residents.

Raising the issue during question hour, former law minister and BJP MLA Suresh Kumar said Karnataka gave 23 acres of land to NLSIU, and in the past four years, the state government has given grants of Rs 22 crore. This apart, in 2020, the NLSIU Amendment Act was passed, which provides 25 per cent seat reservation for Karnataka students, yet the institution is adhering to the Act. Of 24 such premier institutes across India, NLSUI is the only one which does not give domicile reservations for local students.

“The state government should ensure the Act is implemented and reservation is provided for local students. The government can also check if it can withdraw facilities given,” he said. Responding to him, Law Minister JC Madhu Swamy said that according to the domicile reservation policy, those who study for 10 years in Karnataka have to get reservation. After the Act was passed, NLSIU went to the high court and got a stay. Later, the state government appealed before the Supreme Court.

“Kannadigas who got admission through general merit were merged with reservation, which the university cannot do. Reservation quota cannot be merged with general merit,” he said. The case is before the Supreme Court and a hearing is due in the next couple of days. “We have given power, water and land. We will fight for it,” he said.

Madhu Swamy also said that he and Higher Education Minister Dr CN Ashwath Narayan, who are both Governing Council members of NLSIU, had written to the university, but in vain. “The case is before Supreme Court. We have the best advocate to fight our case. We were also told that the Chief Justice said that all universities and colleges have given reservation for locals, and are hoping the judgment will be in our favour,” he said. If required, we will fight on, he added.

MINISTER LISTS OUT GOVT’S ACHIEVEMENTS
Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister JC Madhu Swamy said the state government had taken several measures to help farmers, improve health infrastructure during the Covid pandemic and took up development works across all the sectors. He was responding on behalf of the chief minister to the debate on the Governor’s address. He listed the government’s achievements and hit out at the opposition for criticising the government. The minister asked Congress why they were opposing the amendment to the APMC Act that helps farmers sell their produce wherever they want to. Even Congress leaders had asked for relaxation on the sale of produce at the APMC to help farmers, but why are they protesting against it now?,” he said.
