BJP to build state headquarters in Bhopal at a cost of Rs 100 crore

March 26, 2023 by Nasheman

BJP president JP Nadda will lay foundation of the new building in Bhopal | Express

BHOPAL: BJP national president JP Nadda, during his day-long stay in Bhopal, will lay the foundation of the new BJP state headquarters building today, besides other engaging in other activities, including addressing a gathering of party workers, seven months before the year-end assembly polls. As per key state BJP sources, the new BJP building which is likely to come up in a year and half is believed to incur expenditure of around Rs 75 crore to Rs 100 crore

“The state-of-the-art building will be a ten-storeyed, which will be divided into three parts, including the Sankalp Sankul (main office), Samarpan Sankul (residence of top leaders) and Sahyog Sankul (residence of employees). It will also house an auditorium, having a seating capacity for more than 1000 persons,” a senior state BJP functionary told The New Indian Express on Friday.

To come up in an area of 1.15 lakh square ft, the new BJP state HQ building will have a parking facility for 400 plus vehicles. Solar Energy panels will be installed at the new office to power the new building through Green Energy. According to state BJP president VD Sharma, the construction of the new building is in line with the party’s decision (under the leadership of the present union minister and ex-national party president Amit Shah) to have party offices in each district of the country.

In that context only, our offices across the state are being renovated to have the latest facilities. “For a long time, the work of constructing a new building in place of the old building in Bhopal was pending. Now the work on constructing the new building is going to start. We hope that the new building with all state-of-the-art facilities will be ready in a year and a half.”

Importantly, the old building of the state party HQ was constructed at around Rs  2 crore in 1991, while a BJP government headed by Sunderlal Patwa was in power. It is located in the heart of Bhopal and has been dismantled to clear the way for the new building.

Congress observes day-long ‘Satyagraha’ across country against Rahul’s disqualification

March 26, 2023 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Sunday began a day-long “Sankalp Satyagraha” at Delhi’s Rajghat in support of Rahul Gandhi following his disqualification from the Lok Sabha.

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge, general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, senior leaders KC Venugopal, P Chidambaram and Salman Khurshid were among the party’s top brass taking part in the satyagraha at Rajghat.

Jairam Ramesh, Mukul Wasnik, Pawan Kumar Bansal, Saktisinh Gohil, Jothimani, Pratibha Singh and Manish Chatrath were also present at the protest site.

Several leaders of the party’s Delhi also took part in the protest while a large number of party workers gathered outside the venue despite the police refusing to grant permission for the satyagraha.

In a letter, the Delhi Police said the request for holding the satyagraha was rejected due to law and order and traffic reasons and prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC had been imposed in and around Rajghat.

A senior police officer told PTI that while permission for holding the satyagraha was denied, adequate security arrangements were put in place.

In response to the Delhi Police’s action, Venugopal said on Twitter, “After silencing our voice in Parliament, the government has refused to let us hold a peaceful satyagraha at Bapu’s (Mahatma Gandhi) samadhi as well.

“It has become a habit for the Modi government to disallow every opposition protest. This will not deter us, our fight for truth, against tyranny goes on.”

The Congress has put up a stage outside Rajghat and are protesting against Rahul Gandhi’s conviction in a 2019 defamation case and his subsequent disqualification from the Lok Sabha.

It has announced plans for a day-long satyagraha in front of Mahatma Gandhi statues at all states and district headquarters to protest against the disqualification.

Gandhi was disqualified from the Lok Sabha on Friday, a day after a court in Gujarat’s Surat convicted him in a 2019 defamation case.

The disqualification will prevent Gandhi (52), a four-time MP, from contesting elections for eight years unless a higher court stays the conviction.

Meanwhile, speaking for the first time since his disqualification, Rahul Gandhi hit out at the BJP government by reiterating that “democracy is under attack” in India. He also  of an apology over his remarks on the Modi surname in 2019, which a Surat court found defamatory, saying “My name is not Savarkar. My name is Gandhi. I won’t apologise.”

Lambasting PM Narendra Modi, Rahul said that he had  been disqualified “the Prime Minister is scared about my next speech on Adani and that is why this whole game of disqualification, allegations by ministers aimed at distracting people from Adani issue.”

The Congress leader said: “This is the whole drama that is been orchestrated to defend the Prime Minister from the simple question- Who’s Rs 20,000 crore went to Adani’s shell companies? I am not scared of these threats, disqualifications, or prison sentences.”

He also said that the BJP was trying to divert the issue by alleging that he had insulted OBCs and he would continue to ask what is Modi’s relationship with businessman Gautam Adani.

The disqualification will bar Gandhi (52), a four-time MP, from contesting polls for eight years unless a higher court stays his conviction.

PML-N govt plotting to assassinate me, claims Imran Khan

March 23, 2023 by Nasheman

Imran Khan

LAHORE: Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan on Wednesday alleged that the PML-N-led government was plotting to assassinate him on the pattern of Murtaza Bhutto, who was killed in police firing when his sister Benazir Bhutto was in power in 1996.

Khan, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman, made these startling allegation in a video address to his supporters.

Khan survived an assassination attempt in November last year when unidentified gunmen opened fire on the container-mounted truck carrying him during a protest march in Punjab province.

“Now another plan has been hatched. I am telling everyone, the judiciary [and] especially Punjab police,” 70-year-old Khan claimed in the video address.

He alleged that the police chiefs of Islamabad and Punjab, and their “handlers” had planned another operation outside Zaman Park residence.

“What is the plan? That there is another operation outside Zaman Park either today or tomorrow. They have made two squads who will mix among our people, and then shoot and kill four to five police officials,” Khan claimed.

Khan said this would then prompt an attack from the other side, following which PTI workers would be killed in a Model Town-like situation.

“They will create a situation similar to the assassination of Murtaza Bhutto and kill me,” he warned.

Murtaza, the brother of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, was killed in a police encounter in Karachi in 1996.

Ironically, Benazir was in power at that time. She was killed 11 years later in a terrorist attack during an election rally in Rawalpindi in 2007. The elements in the military establishment are blamed for their assassinations.

Khan urged his party workers to show restraint and not get provoked by the “operation.”

“Whatever the police do. Don’t get provoked. Understand their plan. I am ready to go to jail but do not want bloodshed,” he said.

A few days ago, he claimed that a “death trap” was being laid out during his appearance in Islamabad’s court.

“A death trap was laid out at the Federal Judicial Complex, Islamabad where I had to attend a hearing in the Toshakhana case. Some 20 unknown people — a reference to intelligence agencies men — were present in the complex to kill me,” he asserted.

Last week, clashes were reported between his defiant supporters and security personnel after Khan arrived at the Islamabad judicial complex to attend hearing in the Toshakhana case.

As he left Lahore for Islamabad, the Punjab police launched a search operation at his sprawling premises in the upscale Zaman Park area.

On Wednesday, a total of 143 cases were registered against Khan, mostly on terrorism charges.

“I don’t care about my cases but the way PTI workers are being arrested on false cases, we are now writing to all international human rights organisations against these atrocities,” he said.

Khan also claimed that the PML-N government is going to adopt a resolution in a joint session of the parliament to delay elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces.

The PTI chief has been in the dock for buying gifts, including an expensive Graff wristwatch, which he had received as the premier at a discounted price from the state depository called Toshakhana and selling them for profit.

Khan was ousted from power in April last year after losing a no-confidence vote, becoming the first Pakistani prime minister to be voted out by the National Assembly.

Mallya bought properties worth Rs 330 cr in England, France when Kingfisher Airlines was in crisis: CBI

March 23, 2023 by Nasheman

Embattled liquor tycoon Vijay Mallya

MUMBAI: Beleaguered businessman Vijay Mallya bought properties worth Rs 330 crore in England and France during 2015-16 even as his Kingfisher Airlines was facing a cash crunch at that time and banks had not recovered the loans defaulted by the liquor baron, the CBI has claimed in its supplementary chargesheet filed in a court here.

Mallya is an accused in the alleged over Rs 900 crore IDBI Bank-Kingfisher Airlines loan fraud case being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The central agency recently filed a supplementary chargesheet before a special CBI court here.

Along with all the 11 accused named in the earlier chargesheets, the probe agency has added the name of Buddhadev Dasgupta, former general manager of IDBI Bank in its latest supplementary chargesheet.

The probe agency alleged that by abusing his official position, Dasgupta conspired with the officers of IDBI Bank and Vijay Mallya in the matter of sanction and disbursement of the short-term loan (STL) of Rs 150 crore in October 2009.

The said loan of Rs 150 crore as envisaged originally by Dasgupta (by proposal circulated among credit committee members) was to be adjusted/repaid from the aggregate loan of Rs 750 crore originally sought by the airlines.

However, after circulation, there was change in the proposal to show as if the credit committee had treated this as a separate loan, which may (or may not) be adjusted/recovered from the aggregate loan.

The chargesheet said the exposure of IDBI Bank was to be restricted to the aggregate amount of Rs 750 crore, but it became Rs 900 crore in December 2009 because the STL of Rs 150 crore was kept as a separate loan, largely at the behest of Dasgupta.

During the course of investigation, letters rogatory (LRs) had been sent to the United Kingdom, Mauritius, the USA and Switzerland as per the permission of the CBI court.

Courts of one country seek the assistance of the courts in another for the administration of justice there through letters rogatory.

The chargesheet mentioned the evidence collected during foreign investigation from these countries.

“The properties in the UK (Ladywalk in 2015-16 for GBP 12-13 million or Rs 80 crore) and France (‘Le Grand Jardin’ in 2008 for Euro 35 million or Rs 250 crore approximately) were acquired by Mallya even as Kingfisher Airlines was facing severe a cash crunch (2008) and the lenders were yet to recover the loans defaulted upon by Mallya and the Airlines (2015-16),” it said.

The chargesheet claimed that Mallya had adequate funds at his disposal between 2008 and 2016-17, but none of it was brought to support the airlines as equity infusion or to honour his obligations as a personal guarantor for the loans availed by KAL from IDBI and other banks in India.

The chargesheet, citing the evidence collected through LRs, said that sizable amounts were transferred to Force India Formula 1 Team between 2008 and 2012, it said.

The chargesheet further said that significant amounts were diverted from 2007 to 2012-13 and used to make payments towards acquisition and repayment of loan for the corporate jet used personally by Mallya.

Besides the CBI, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) is also probing a money laundering case against Mallya.

On January 5, 2019, a special court in Mumbai had declared Mallya a ‘fugitive’.

Under the provisions of the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act, once a person is declared a fugitive economic offender, the prosecuting agency has the powers to confiscate his property.

Get people tested instead of giving freebies, experts suggest

March 23, 2023 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: With the Karnataka assembly elections round the corner, health professionals in the field of cardiology, diabetology and nephrology suggest that instead of freebies, candidates can provide free screening tests (blood sugar, blood pressure, urine and creatinine) to people, to identify lifestyle diseases at an early stage.

Diabetologist Dr Manohar KN, chairman, of the Karnataka Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (KRSSDI), explained that diabetes is the biggest cause of kidney-related ailments. India has the second highest number of people suffering from diabetes after China, hence it is important to keep an eye on parameters like blood/sugar levels regularly, he said.

The four tests combined cost around Rs 500 in a government-run health centre, and the cost will go down further if performed on a larger scale, Dr Manohar said.

Speaking at a press briefing organised by the Kidney Warriors Association, in association with the Indian Medical Association (IMA) and Indian Society of Nephrology (ISN), medical professionals highlighted that the prevalence of lifestyle diseases like cardiac arrests, kidney failure, diabetes or high blood pressure are inter-related. Many of them can be prevented if diagnosed at an early stage, they said.

Dr Arvind Kaneevaran, consultant nephrologist, transplant physician and co-founder, of Bloom Value Corporation, said that people in India do not have a concept of regular health checkups and do not have family physicians. Only in case of serious ailments do people end up visiting a doctor.

The panellists also appreciated the recently inaugurated Namma Clinics in Karnataka, which provide free consultations to people for basic ailments. Since treatment for these lifestyle diseases is expensive, a person who undergoes screening annually post the age of 30, can be diagnosed much earlier.

‘Modi surname’ case: Rahul reacts to guilty verdict, quotes Gandhiji in tweet

AHMEDABAD: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi quoted Mahatma Gandhi in a tweet about truth and non-violence after a court in Surat in Gujarat on Thursday sentenced him to two years in jail in a criminal defamation case connected to his “Modi surname” remarks.

“My religion is based on truth and non-violence. Truth is my God, and non-violence is the means to get it. — Mahatma Gandhi,” the Congress leader wrote in a tweet in Hindi soon after the court verdict.

The court of Chief Judicial Magistrate HH Varma sentenced Gandhi to two years in jail in a criminal defamation case over his ‘Modi surname” remark during an election rally in Karnataka ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha election.

The court granted him bail and suspended the sentence for 30 days to allow him to appeal in a higher court, the Congress leader’s lawyer Babu Mangukiya said.

The court sentenced Gandhi under sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code dealing with criminal defamation, Mangukiya said. Gandhi was present in the court when it pronounced its verdict.

The case was filed against Gandhi for his alleged “how come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?” remarks based on a complaint lodged by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi.

The Lok Sabha MP from Wayanad made the remarks while addressing a rally at Kolar in Karnataka on April 13, 2019, during Lok Sabha poll campaigning.

Rahul visit to poll-bound Karnataka won’t have any impact: Bommai

March 23, 2023 by Nasheman

CM Basavaraj Bommai at an event organised to distribute cheques to government scheme beneficiaries in Mangaluru on Thursday | Express

HUBBALLI: Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Tuesday said former AICC president Rahul Gandhi’s visit to poll-bound Karnataka will not have any impact. Speaking to reporters here, the CM termed Congress’ guarantees as bogus announcements.

“His  (Rahul) Bharat Jodo Yatra did not have any impact. His recent visit to Belagavi will not influence state politics,” Bommai said. The CM said the people of Karnataka will not give any value to Rahul’s words, especially after his recent remarks in the UK regarding the state of democracy in India.

Bommai said the Congress has a track record of not implementing the promises it makes. “It is their track record. For instance, in Chhattisgarh, the party promises Rs 1,000 to each household… they did not give it in the first four years…now in the last year of the tenure, they are giving it. So these are not guarantee cards, but visiting cards,” he added.

Further lashing out at CLP leader Siddaramaiah over allegations of corruption against his government, Bommai said complaints were lodged with the Lokayukta against the Congress leader over several cases, including the redo of Arkavathy Layout. “Siddaramaiah raising the issue of corruption is like the pot calling the kettle black,” he added.

He said discussions are underway with legal experts to conduct a judicial inquiry into 59 “corruption cases” of Siddaramaiah’s government, and a decision will be made soon.

On the ongoing controversy over Uri Gowda and Nanje Gowda, the CM said, “Several historical facts of India and Karnataka are twisted. Once the actual facts are established after research, the truth will prevail. Moreover, everyone knows who was involved in the killing of Tipu… but some people can’t digest the truth.”

Chief Minister Bommai said that he will remain as the CM after the polls. This comes amid speculation that the BJP top brass may pick a new CM if it returns to power.

JDS leader HD Kumaraswamy called Congress’ ‘guarantee card’  as a ‘duplicate card’. He took a jibe at CLP leader Siddaramaiah’s hunt for a safe seat. “My sympathies are with Siddaramaiah… it shows his lack of confidence,” he said. Kumaraswamy said he has no plans of fighting from two seats.   “Speculation is rife that ex-MP Ramya will face me in Channapatna. I am not bothered about my opponents,” he said.

Indian mission in London’s security heightened as British Sikh groups call for protests

March 23, 2023 by Nasheman

LONDON: There is a heightened security presence and barricades have been erected outside the Indian High Commission here on Wednesday due to a planned demonstration called by some British Sikh groups.

Banners for a so-called “National Protest”, organised by groups such as the Federation of Sikh Organisations (FSO) and Sikh Youth Jathebandia, have been circulating on social media since before a protest on Sunday, which ended in violent disorder at the India House.

The Indian government registered a strong protest over the lack of security measures at its diplomatic mission, which ended in Khalistan flag-waving protesters smashing windows of the mission and attempting to pull down the tricolour.

Since the weekend, several uniformed officers have been patrolling the area in Aldwych and Metropolitan Police vans have been stationed at India Place.

Wednesday’s planned demonstration claims to be in response to discriminatory actions of the Indian Police in Punjab.

The Indian High Commission in London has been working to counter disinformation circulating around developments in Punjab, related to enforcement action against the separatist group ‘Waris Punjab De’.

“Let me assure all our friends here in the UK, especially brothers and sisters with relatives in Punjab, that there is no truth to the sensationalist lies being circulated on social media,” Indian High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswami said in a video posted on Twitter.

“The situation in your ancestral homeland is not what is being reported. The elected chief minister of the state and the local police authorities have put out detailed information, including interviews on television, please watch these. Do not believe the small handful of people putting out fiction and disinformation,” he said.

In an update on the enforcement action since March 18, Doraiswami said that the Punjab Police launched an operation against elements of ‘Waris Punjab De’ against whom criminal cases have been recorded, in particular against Amritpal Singh, the chief of this organisation.

He added that the constitutional rights to legal defence for all those arrested will be protected and reiterated that all communication services, including mobile telephone networks and the internet, are up and running in the state.

British Sikh MPs, Labour’s Tanmanjeet Singh and Preet Kaur Gill, were among those to express concern for their UK constituents with relatives in Punjab.

“Monitoring developments surrounding the Punjab. So many of my constituents are concerned for their loved ones given an internet blackout. Ministers should engage with Indian authorities so UK families who can’t reach their relatives regain contact as soon as possible,” Gill tweeted on Sunday.

On being alerted to the violent protest at the High Commission, she added: “No one should resort to such attacks. This is unacceptable.”

Several diaspora groups gathered for a We Stand By High Commission of India festive demonstration outside India House in London on Tuesday as a show of solidarity following vandalism.

The Metropolitan Police said its “enquiries continue” and one male arrested on suspicion of violent disorder has since been bailed to appear in court in mid-June.

Meanwhile, in New Delhi, police have removed barricades “that created hurdles” for commuters outside the British High Commission here but the security of the diplomatic mission remains intact, officials said on Wednesday.

India lose 3rd ODI by 21 runs

March 23, 2023 by Nasheman

CHENNAI: Australia spinners Adam Zampa (4-45) and Ashton Agar (2-41) picked up six wickets to beat India by 21 runs in the final ODI at the MA Chidambaram stadium here on Wednesday

India was all out for 248 in 49.1 overs, chasing Australia’s 269 on a pitch offering turn. Steve Smith’s captaincy needs a special mention for he never gave up the game at any moment and fought till the very end to guide the visitors a well deserved 2-1 win in the series.

This ODI series is an eye-opener for India for things to come, as they are the hosts of the upcoming World Cup to be played in October. Smith is a captain who knows how to exploit an opportunity when he senses it. When Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav (the third one-baller of the series) were removed off successive deliveries, Smith believed that Australia stood a chance to win.

This self-belief and tidy bowling by the Australian bowlers in the last ten overs enabled the visitors to taste victory. The attack is the best form of defence goes a famous adage. India used this ploy to counter the in-form Mitchell Starc and reaped rich dividends.

Virat Kohli played a mature and responsible inning (54) to keep India alive in the match as the top-order could not convert the starts into big scores. The master craftsman once again showed why he is considered the best of his generation.

Kohli had done his homework well and thus played a lot straighter, and attacked only when required. He cut, pulled and swept with relish. He was also at ease against the spinners off the back foot.  He once pulled Agar to the fence and then executed a well-planned inside-out shot to the boundary. Later, a well-set Kohli went for a half-hearted inside-out shot from a ball that came in from Agar and it sailed into Warner’s hands at long off.

Adam Zampa (C) celebrates a wicket on Wednesday

The very next ball Yadav was castled by Agar. The fact that the team shielded Yadav and sent him at No 7 was to give the Mumbaikar some time. But alas Yadav once again did not grab the opportunity. Thus, from a comfortable position, India was reduced to 185 for 6.

Now it was left to Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja the last two recognised batters to do the rescue act. The pressure was so high that they could not even rotate the strike regularly. The boundaries were not coming due to the excellent field setting by Smith. Finally, Pandya (40) played against the spin of an Adam Zampa delivery but only managed to find Smith in the covers. Set a target of 270 for a win, India began the chase in earnest with skipper Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill carefully negotiating Mitchel Starc and Marcus Stoinis.

Luckily for India, Starc chose to bowl the wrong lengths and pitched the ball in the wrong areas. This exploited the host’s top order. During one such moment, Gill carted a half-volley from Starc that was pitched on the middle and leg stump over deep mid-wicket.

Again to relieve the team of pressure Gill square cut Stoinis to the fence, picking the gaps intelligently, with the Australian fielders watching the ball travel like a bullet to the fence. Gill showed his sense of timing by executing a short-arm jab to the long-on fence, then he came well behind the line of the ball to execute a copybook off drive wide of mid-off.

The India team think tank ploy of unsettling Starc worked as the Australian speedster was visibly unhappy with the treatment he was getting. Rohit Sharma and Gill added 65 runs for the first wicket.

Rohit (30) was done in by change of pace and fell to Sean Abbott. A while later, Gill (37) was also trapped in front of Zampa. Kohli and KL Rahul seemingly settled in for a long night’s work but their vigil fell short. Apart from the spinners, Australia had a number of batters to thank for putting up 269.

Brief scores

Australia 269 in 49 ovs (Head 33, Marsh 47, Carey 38; Kuldeep 3/56, Pandya 3/44, Axar 2/57, Siraj 2/37) bt India 248 in 49.1 ovs (Gill 37, Kohli 54, Pandya 40; Zampa 4/45, Agar 2/41).
