19-year-old girl stabbed to death in Gurugram; accused held by local police

Gurugram: In a heart-wrenching incident, a 19-year-old girl in Gurugram was stabbed to death on Monday, in the presence of her mother, who made desperate attempts to save her daughter.

The incident was captured on a CCTV camera and the footage showed that, although the incident took place in the presence of other people too, none of the eye-witnesses came to the girl’s help. The relatives of the victim handed the murder accused Rajkumar, aged 23 years, to Palam Vihar police officials.

The initial investigation has revealed that the duo was engaged four months ago, but the marriage was cancelled a few days back. The girl was murdered as she refused to marry the youngster.

Several media houses, however, have been projecting the crime to be a case of attack on Hindu girls by their Muslim lovers. Popular Kannada daily Kannada Prabha has reported the incident with the headline, ‘Muslim youth kills Hindu girl for refusing to marry him’.

The Gurugram police officers, however, have clarified on Twitter, “The knife used to kill the girl and the mobile phone of the arrested accused have been confiscated. The girl seems to have been stabbed twice. The body has been sent to conduct a post-mortem test.

Further investigation of the case is underway.”

Dubai-bound Air India flight leaves from Mangaluru Airport after 12-hour delay

Mangaluru: An Air India Express flight scheduled to depart for Dubai from Mangalore International Airport faced a delay of 12 hours due to a technical fault. The flight, which was supposed to take off at 11.05 p.m. on Monday night, finally departed at 12.10 p.m. on Tuesday.

As a result of the prolonged delay, approximately seven passengers opted to cancel their journeys and made alternative travel arrangements. However, 161 passengers decided to continue with their travel plans and boarded the flight to Dubai.

Passengers were informed about the technical fault with flight IX813 and were initially informed that the flight would be diverted to Thiruvananthapuram, with accommodation provided at a hotel. From Thiruvananthapuram, they would proceed to Dubai. However, most passengers expressed a preference for an empty flight to be brought directly from Thiruvananthapuram to Mangalore, allowing for a non-stop journey. Responding to this feedback, Air India arranged for a replacement flight from Thiruvananthapuram to Mangalore, enabling the passengers to continue their journey to Dubai.

Meanwhile, flight IX383, originally scheduled to depart at 9.15 a.m. on Tuesday, was rescheduled for 6.45 p.m.

Air India expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to passengers and released a statement addressing the situation. “The flight scheduled for Dubai on Monday night was able to fly to Thiruvananthapuram. Passengers were told that the flight would proceed to Dubai after maintenance work was completed in Trivandrum. However, as the passengers preferred to wait for the empty flight to arrive from Thiruvananthapuram, there were delays. We have ensured continuous catering for passengers, and passengers have also cooperated,” the statement read.

Islam occupies unique ‘position of pride’ amongst religious groups in India: NSA Ajit Doval

New Delhi: National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on Tuesday said India has been a melting pot of cultures and religions that have co-existed in harmony for centuries, and Islam occupies a unique and significant “position of pride” amongst the religious groups in the country.

Doval’s remarks came during an event here at the India Islamic Cultural Centre where Muslim World League Secretary General Sheikh Dr Mohammed bin Abdulkarim Al-Issa, who is on an India visit, also addressed the gathering.

Doval hailed Al-Issa as an authentic global voice of moderate Islam and a profound scholar with a deep understanding of Islam.

Hailing the “excellent” relations between India and Saudi Arabia, Doval the ties were rooted in shared cultural heritage, common values and economic ties.

“Our leaders share a common vision for the future and have been closely interacting with each other,” the National Security Advisor said.

In his remarks, Doval said India as the world’s largest democracy and the mother of democracies is a land of incredible diversity.

“In your (Al-Issa) talk you elaborately mentioned diversity as a fundamental trait of our existence. It (India) has been a melting pot of cultures, religions, languages and ethnicities that have co-existed in harmony for centuries. As an inclusive democracy, India has successfully managed to provide space for all its citizens regardless of their religious, ethnic and cultural identities,” he said.

“Amongst its numerous religious groups, Islam occupies a unique and significant position of pride with India being home to the second largest Muslim population in the world,” he said.

To give an idea of the scale we are talking about, India’s Muslim population is almost equal to the combined population of over 33 member states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Doval added.

100 people killed in accidents on B’luru-Mysuru Expressway in less than 4 months: HM Parameshwara

Bengaluru: Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Tuesday said a total of 308 accidents have taken place on the newly constructed Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway so far since its inaugural in March, leading to 100 deaths and 335 injuries.

He said, Public Works Department Minister Satish Jarkiholi has already written to the National Highway Authority regarding the number of shortcomings in the project and safety measures to be ensured, and the Home Department will also write to them regarding issues such as lack of signages, and will take measures to regulate speeding along the stretch.

The Minister was responding to a question regarding the increase in the number of accidents on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway way.

“If you look at the Bengaluru-Mysuru Express Highway there are a lot of shortcomings. There are no sign boards to indicate curves, narrow lanes. This has resulted in over speeding, as the road is good, with the same speed the motorists try to navigate the curves, leading to mishaps and deaths,” Parameshwara said.

Stating that in March soon after the inaugural, there were 62 accidents in which 20 deaths and 63 injuries were reported, he said.

In April, there were 75 accidents in which 23 died and 83 injured. In May, there were 94 mishaps leading to 29 deaths and 93 injuries and in June there were 77 accidents with 28 deaths and 96 injuries.

“A total of 308 accidents have taken place along the stretch since March to June, leading to 100 deaths and 335 injuries,” he said, adding that if things are not corrected immediately, more people will lose their lives.

Stating that during his recent visit to Mysuru, many people informed him about the deaths that are taking place and urged him to take action, the Home Minister said, as per his instructions, ADGP Traffic has recently conducted inspections at places in Ramanagara and Mandya district along the stretch of the expressway and he has given some inputs.

Highlighting measures being taken to control accidents along the expressway, he said instructions have been given to authorities to implement them to regulate things.

Listing out measures, Parameshwara said, “Steps are being taken to increase highway patrolling vehicles along the expressway. If patrolling vehicles are deployed every 30 to 35 km they can keep watch on those speeding and control them, and also they can ensure that vehicles don’t park along the stretch.”

He also said sign boards indicating deviations or exits which connect villages along the expressway will be installed. “They were not installed earlier.”

Speaking about lack of lane discipline among motorists, Parameshwara said steps will be taken to ensure lane discipline is followed.

Also fencing has to be installed to prevent pedestrians coming on to the expressway, he said, adding, though they were installed earlier, at many places near villages, they have been removed. Instructions have been given to the National Highway Authority in this regard.

Also steps will be taken to install street lights along the stretch, especially at places where the expressway connects underpasses, he added.

Further noting that many of the motorists don’t know traffic rules, the Minister said the RTOs are not conducting traffic regulation tests properly and are issuing licences; the government is taking measures to correct it, while also spreading awareness among the people.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 12 had inaugurated the 118 km long Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway project.

Officials had then said that it will reduce the travel time between the two cities from around three hours to about 75 minutes.

The Rs 8,480 crore project involved six-laning of the Bengaluru-Nidaghatta-Mysuru section of NH-275 and will act as a catalyst for socio-economic development in the region, they had said.

Ayodhya: Man throws acid at woman after marriage called off

Ayodhya: A 25-year-old man allegedly threw acid at a woman here in the Haiderganj area of the city after his marriage with her was called off, police said on Tuesday.

The woman has been referred to Lucknow Trauma Centre in critical condition and the man has been arrested, police said.

The man went to the 20-year-old woman’s house late Monday night and threw acid at her while she was asleep, police said.

Inspector General Ayodhya Range Pravin Kumar said Rajkaran Sharma was known to the victim and her family and lived in an area under the Inayat Nagar Police Station.

He was miffed that his marriage with the woman was called off. The reason why it happened was not specified.

“We will file the chargesheet in the court in two days and within 15 to 20 days we will get the guilty punished,” the IG added.

India to buy 26 Rafales, 3 Scorpene submarines from France, deal likely to be announced during PM Modi’s visit

NEW DELHI: In a major development, India is planning to buy 26 Rafale fighter aircraft and three Scorpene class conventional submarines from France.

The proposals have been placed before the Defence Ministry by the defence forces and are likely to be announced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to France this week, government sources told ANI.

As per the proposals, the Indian Navy will get 22 single-seated Rafale Marine aircraft along with four trainer aircraft.

The Navy had been pressing for acquiring these fighter aircraft and submarines urgently as they have been facing shortages in view of the security challenges around the country.

The aircraft carriers INS Vikramaditya and Vikrant have been operating the MiG-29s and need the Rafales for operations on both carriers.

Meanwhile, the three Scorpene class submarines would be acquired under the repeat clause by the Navy as part of Project 75 where they would be built in the Mazagon Dockyards Limited in Mumbai.

The deals are estimated to be worth over Rs 90,000 crore but the final cost would be clear only after the contract negotiations are completed which will be held after the deal is announced.

India is likely to seek price concessions in the deal and would be insisting on having more ‘Make-in-India’ content in the plan, sources said.

Industry sources said for the Rafale M deal, India and France are expected to form a joint team to negotiate the deal like it was done for the previous Rafale deal for 36 fighter aircraft.

The proposals have been discussed in the defence ministry at high-level meetings already and are likely to be placed before the defence acquisition council in the next few days and expected to be accorded Acceptance of Necessity by the government before the announcement in France. 

We will bring Amarnath pilgrims home safely: Karnataka Minister

BENGALURU:  Revenue Minister Krishna Byregowda on Monday clarified that the Amarnath Yatra pilgrims from Karnataka, who were stranded due to rain-related damage, were brought to safety to relief camps, and they will be brought back home soon.

“Already, 129 pilgrims who were rescued and taken to the CRPF camp have been safely brought to Kashmir. However, the weather has worsened in the Baltal camp and the road has been closed due to heavy fog. Once the situation improves by Wednesday, the road operation will begin.

After that, those in the Baltal camp will also be brought to Kashmir and to Karnataka,” he informed the Assembly.

The Chief Minister’s Office is communicating with four senior IAS and IPS officers from the state, who have already been sent to Kashmir. “The families of pilgrims need not panic as it is our responsibility to bring everyone home safely,” he said, expressing confidence.

No LoP in Karnataka Assembly, Congress takes jibe at BJP leadership

BENGALURU: Even a week after the commencement of the budget session in Karnataka, the Legislative Assembly remains without a Leader of Opposition (LoP), since the BJP top brass are yet to take a decision. The ruling Congress party criticised the BJP, terming the latter’s indecision as undemocratic.

According to BJP legislators, the appointment of LoP is unlikely anytime soon and the session will continue like this until the end.

Former chief minister Basavaraj Bommai’s son Bharat was blessed with a baby boy on Monday. The entrepreneur and industrialist, Bharat, tweeted about the glad tidings, with many of his and his father’s friends greeting him.

One killed, Rs 1.2 cr looted from bank in Manipur

GUWAHATI:  One person was killed and several others were injured in violent clashes in Manipur on Monday, while a bank branch that reopened after two months found Rs 1.2 crore was looted. 

The Axis Bank branch in Churachandpur was shut on May 3 in the wake of violence. When it reopened on Monday, Rs 1.2 crore and other valuables including gold were found to be missing. The bank lodged an FIR with the police. 

A gunfight erupted at Singda and Phayeng villages on the border of Imphal West and Kangpokpi districts around 3 am and continued till 6 am. It started again around 8 am and continued for some time before the security forces brought the situation under control.

Official sources said the miscreants were using drones at night to recce areas before unleashing attacks.  In a status report filed in the Supreme Court, the Manipur government said a total of 142 people were killed in the violence while 5,995 FIRs were filed. Six cases were transferred to the CBI. The police detained 6,745 people. 

Over 50,000 people were displaced by the violence. They are taking shelter in the state as well as some states in the Northeast.

Tejashwi must quit after being chargesheeted in land-for-jobs scam: BJP

PATNA:  Bihar assembly on Monday witnessed an uproar when BJP demanded the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav in view of the filing of chargesheet against him in the land-for-jobs scam.

As soon as the House assembled on the first day of the monsoon session, BJP chief whip Janak Ram rose from his seat and demanded the resignation of Tejashwi. Both CM Nitish Kumar and Tejashwi were present in the house at that time.

The first supplementary budget for the financial year 2023-24 was also tabled in the House in the monsoon session. Earlier, Bihar CM, Tejashwi and his elder brother and minister Tej Pratap Yadav reached the assembly in the same vehicle.

BJP’s chief whip said that it had never happened earlier, adding that for the first time, during the tenure of Nitish, a chargesheeted person was participating in the proceedings of the House as deputy CM. “Why is action not being taken against Tejashwi?” he asked.

He said that the government had to concede to the demands of teachers after they were forced to appear in Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) examination. 

“We will take out a march to assembly on July 13 and will not allow the House to conduct its proceedings,” he said. Meanwhile, the grand alliance’s legislature party meeting was held under the CM.
