Pounding rains in Karnataka: CM Siddaramaiah says govt well-prepared to tackle situation

July 26, 2023 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: With rains pounding most parts of Karnataka, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the state government has reviewed the risk-prone areas and is well-prepared to tackle the situation.

He appealed to people to follow the instructions of the local administration.

The Government has reviewed the risk-prone areas and is well prepared to tackle the issues on ground,” the Chief Minister tweeted.

To ensure safety, District Commissioners have declared holidays for schools and colleges in the vulnerable regions and it is advised for all citizens to adhere to the instructions of local administration, he further said.

Meanwhile, all the reservoirs are completely filled up with a heavy inflow of water. Most of the rivers in the state are in spate.

The India Meteorological Department has sounded an orange alert for the coastal and Malnad region in the state with a forecast that moderate to heavy spells of rain accompanied by gusty winds was likely in these places.

The wall of a house at a village in Bantwal in Dakshina Kannada district collapsed and the inmates moved to the house of their relatives. Three houses in Pudu village were damaged in rain-related incidents.

The temporary service road at Kalladka which was a make-shift arrangement during the ongoing construction of the National Highway was completely washed away following heavy downpours.

A warning has been issued to the residents, and tourists against visiting beaches, rivers and waterfalls and attempting to take photos and videos in these areas.

Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea. District and taluk level officials are asked to be in their central office and follow disaster management mandatorily, sources said.

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday performed “pooja” at the redeveloped India Trade Promotion Organization (ITPO) complex at the Pragati Maidan here ahead of its official inauguration.

He also interacted with the workers who were involved in the construction of the complex and felicitated them.

The revamped International Exhibition-cum-Convention Centre (IECC) complex will be officially inaugurated in the evening by the prime minister, who will also address the gathering.Advertisementhttps://www.newindianexpress.com/nation/2023/jul/26/pm-modi-performs-pooja-at-redeveloped-itpo-complex-at-pragati-maidan-2598741.html

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on Monday had said the facility, built following an overhaul of the old and outdated structures at Pragati Maidan, was developed as a national project at a cost of about Rs 2,700 crore and has a campus area of approximately 123 acres.

The IECC complex has been developed as India’s largest MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) destination.

In terms of the covered space available for events, the complex finds its place among the top exhibition and convention complexes in the world, it said.

It comprises multiple state-of-the-art facilities including the convention centre, exhibition halls and amphitheatres among others, the PMO said, adding the new facility is in line with Modi’s vision of having a world-class infrastructure for hosting meetings.

Opposition ‘INDIA’, BRS move no-confidence motion against Modi government in Lok Sabha

July 26, 2023 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI: The Congress submitted a no-confidence motion against the Narendra Modi-led central government on the Manipur issue in the Lok Sabha, sources said on Wednesday.

Congress deputy leader in Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi moved the motion, the party’s whip in Lok Sabha Manickam Tagore told PTI.

“The INDIA alliance is together and this is the idea of the INDIA alliance. Congress party’s leader will be moving the motion. We feel that it is our duty to use this last weapon to break the arrogance of the government and make them speak on Manipur,” Tagore asserted.

Sources also said that a notice has been given to the Speaker’s office in this regard.

Tagore said the opposition had decided to move the no-confidence motion to break the arrogance of the prime minister, who is not speaking in Parliament.

The alliance of 26 opposition parties, INDIA, had decided to move the motion in order to make Prime Minister Narendra Modi speak in Parliament on the Manipur violence, senior leaders of the front said.

The Congress has also issued a whip in the Lower House of Parliament for its members to be present in its parliamentary office by 10.30 am on Wednesday to “discuss some important issues”.

Although the no-confidence motion by opposition parties is bound to fail the numbers test, opposition parties argue that they will win the battle of perception by cornering the government on the Manipur issue during the debate.

They contend that it is also a strategy to make the prime minister speak in Parliament on the crucial matter even as the government has been insisting that Union Home Minister Amit Shah will reply to the debate on the Manipur situation.

24-year-old Indian student dies after being assaulted during deadly carjacking in Canada

July 24, 2023 by Nasheman

TORONTO: A 24-year-old Indian student, who worked as a food delivery partner in Canada, has been killed after he was violently assaulted during a deadly carjacking, according to media reports.

Gurvinder Nath was delivering pizza at around 2:10 am on July 9 on Mississauga’s Britannia and Creditview roads when unknown suspects confronted him and tried to steal his vehicle, CTV News channel reported.

“Investigators do believe that there are multiple suspects involved and that the food order was placed as a means of luring the driver to this specific area,” Inspector Phil King of Peel Regional Police’s Homicide Bureau said, adding that investigators have obtained an audio recording of the Pizza Pizza order placed before the attack.

After Nath arrived, he was “violently assaulted” and left critically injured by a suspect who robbed him of his vehicle and fled the scene, police said.

Multiple witnesses came to his aid and called for help before Nath was rushed to a trauma centre where he was pronounced dead on July 14.

Siddhartha Nath, Consul General of India in Toronto, said Nath’s death is a “heartrending loss” and he extended his condolences to family members, friends and the wider community, the CBC reported.

He said the consulate general has contacted the family after his death.

“It was heartening for me to see how the community responded, came together both online and physically to support the family in this time of grief,” the Consul General said. “Of course, nothing can make good the loss, but it will be some solace to the grieving family and it’s also a signal of the spirit of the community because it is in times like this when the spirit and the solidarity and the sense of empathy is tested.”

The Consul General said he hopes the people responsible are brought to justice.

Inspector King said despite the infancy of the investigation, police believe Nath was an innocent victim.

Nath’s vehicle was found abandoned in the hours following the attack in the area of Old Creditview and Old Derry roads — less than five kilometres from the crime scene, King said.

“The working theory is that perhaps there may have been extensive injuries (to Nath) that may not have been anticipated and that may have caused (the suspects) to get rid of the vehicle early,” he said.

The vehicle has since been forensically examined and “several” pieces of evidence have been retrieved, King added.

Police say there is no known connection between Nath and his attackers.

“I would like to remind those involved that regardless of your level of participation, you are complicit in the murder of Gurvinder Nath and you will be arrested and charged accordingly,” King said.

Nath’s body will be flown to India on July 27 with the help of the Consulate General of India in Toronto, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) reported.

Last week, CTV News Toronto spoke to family and friends of Nath, who said the Brampton resident was on summer break before he returned to his final semester of business school.

“He was innocent, he was just delivering pizza [when] random people hit him on his head,” Nath’s cousin, Balram Krishan, said.

Nath arrived in Canada from India in July of 2021 and had plans to open his own business.

On Saturday, more than 200 people gathered in Mississauga at a candlelight vigil for Nath, the CBC reported.

Speakers at the vigil said that Nath came to Canada carrying his family’s hopes and now his family is dealing with grief at the loss of one of its three sons.

“You come to Canada with a dream. You start your life. But these people stole a dream,” Bobby Sidhu, a friend of a relative of Nath, said.

Sidhu said: “Canada was known for peace. And I hope that in our country such senseless and merciless crime will come to an end. Everyone could relate to Gurvinder. I think that’s the reason the community has come together.”

IND vs WI 2nd Test: Confident Ashwin will do the job for India on final day

July 24, 2023 by Nasheman

PORT OF SPAIN: India pacer Mohammed Siraj is confident spinner Ravichandran Ashwin will prove to be more than a handful for the West Indies batters on the final day of the second Test here on Monday and help the visitors make a clean sweep of the two-match series.

India, after setting a 365-run target for the hosts to level the series, had West Indies struggling at 76/2 at stumps on day four with veteran spinner Ashwin taking both the wickets on Sunday.

“The way the wicket is behaving, Ashwin, I feel, will run through the West Indies batting, the ball is turning,” said Siraj at the end of the day’s play after India declared their innings at 181/2 and then got rid of the dangerous West Indies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite and Kirk McKenzie to leave the hosts in a spot of bother.

Siraj also disclosed that it was India’s strategy to bat aggressively in the second innings and set a big target quickly for the home side.

India batters, especially, Ishan Kishan played T20-style cricket notching up 52 off just 34 balls.

“Yes, Ishan is an aggressive batter. Rishabh Pant is not there, so as a wicketkeeper, he (Ishan) is able to fill in for Pant’s loss to a certain extent, if not completely. He has the ability to hit the ball long and hard. He has the ability to hit all around the ground. We had enough runs on the board (first innings lead), so our plan was to score as many (runs in the second innings) in a short period and then (after declaration), we would be able to get more overs to bowl out the West Indies.”

Siraj grabbed a five-for in the first innings, which helped India dismiss the West Indies for 255 in response to the visitors’ 438, and Siraj said bowling tirelessly in these conditions wasn’t easy.

“I would rate my performance very high because it’s not easy to take five wickets on a flat wicket. I had set a plan, especially when the ball started reverse swinging, I executed my line and length perfectly. My plan was simple. Since the ball wasn’t doing much, I kept it stump-to-stump and also derived some seam,” he added.

He added that it wasn’t easy bowling in hot and humid conditions with frequent rain interruptions.

“When you bowl long spells in this heat and humidity, it is not easy. Then intermittent rains and to warm up again and again after every rain break, it was very challenging.”

Siraj added he was proud to have become the mainstay of the Indian pace-bowling unit in a short span of two-and-half years.

With Jasprit Bumraj recovering from a back injury and Mohammed Shami rested for the West Indies series, the pressure is on Siraj to deliver and the 29-year-old quick has not disappointed.

“To be honest, I feel very nice when I get a responsibility, when no (senior) is there. When I have responsibility on my shoulders, I like it a lot, and I like accepting challenges,” said Siraj.

Pacer Mukesh Kumar bowling 23 overs and taking two wickets so far in his debut match also drew praise from Siraj, who said the 29-year-old bowler easily adjusted to the flat track here as he had bowled extensively on docile wickets in domestic cricket.

“Mukesh is not a new player. He plays Ranji Trophy regularly and bowls on difficult wickets. It’s not easy to take wickets in Ranji Trophy, where wickets are even more flat than the one at Port of Spain. Performing in domestic cricket is a huge achievement and then coming here and controlling your nerves is not easy. He is playing his first match for India and that too a Test and he is bowling long spells,” added Siraj.

Raft turns ambulance, ferries 2 from flood-hit village in Uttara Kannada

July 24, 2023 by Nasheman

JOIDA(UTTARA KANNADA): Heavy rain in several parts of Joida taluk in Uttara Kannada exposed the pathetic condition in which people live in the interior villages of Kali Tiger Reserve. Two persons, who developed respiratory problems, had to be ferried out in rafts meant for adventure sports, to a hospital. In the backwaters of Kaneri reservoir, the roads have turned into rivers as the water level has been rising continuously for the last three days. A bridge near Kundal village has submerged, leaving no road connectivity to the villagers.

Tahsildar Basavaraj Chinnalli and Revenue Inspector Ganapathi Methri came to the rescue of the two patients after being told that the village had got completely cut off from the outer world. “After exploring various options, we finally decided to use rafts from Hornbill Resorts.

An ambulance was then stationed at a safer place in which the patients, Raja Velap and Ganesh Velap, were taken to a hospital. They have been admitted to Joida Taluk Hospital,” said Subhash Gouda, a resident here. The gram panchayat is a cluster of several villages with a population of about 1,000 people. Of the villages in the panchayat, Kundal, Kuravali, Navara, Ambali and Katheli have been cut off from the outer world since Thursday night.

Gyanvapi row: Supreme Court stays scientific survey until 5 pm on July 26

July 24, 2023 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday directed that the Varanasi district court order on conducting a scientific survey of Gyanvapi mosque shall not be enforced until 5 pm on July 26.

On Monday morning, a 30-member team of the ASI had entered the mosque complex to carry out the scientific survey in accordance with court orders to determine if the mosque located next to the Kashi Vishwanath temple was built upon a temple.

Meanwhile, a plea was moved by the mosque committee today.

A bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud took note of submissions made by senior advocate Huzefa Ahmadi, who appeared in the court on behalf of the mosque committee. Urging the court to stay the Varanasi district court’s July 21 order, Ahmadi said that the trial court did not even give them “breathing time” to file an appeal against the Varanasi court’s order.

Expressing an apprehension regarding ‘a possible excavation’ being carried out, Ahmadi also said that the district court’s order, according to them, was in the teeth of the top court’s May ruling of directing to defer the scientific survey of “shivling” in the complex.

Questioning the haste for carrying out the survey, he asked, “What is the hot haste? This property is being used as a mosque since 1500. What is the tearing hurry?”

Opining that “breathing time should be granted to the Muslim side”, the bench asked the mosque committee to approach the Allahabad High Court and directed the Registrar General of the HC to ensure the listing of the plea.

“We permit the petitioners to move the HC to challenge the order of District Judge Varanasi. Having regards to the fact that the order was pronounced at 4:30 pm on Friday (July 21) and the survey is in the process of being carried out today, we are of the view that some breathing time should be granted. Order of the district court should not be imposed until 5 PM till July 26, 2023,” the bench said in its order.

The top court also ordered that no invasive work would be undertaken by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to determine if the Gyanvapi mosque located next to the Kashi Vishwanath temple in Varanasi was built upon a temple.

The Supreme Court asked Solicitor General (SG) Tushar Mehta, who was representing the Uttar Pradesh government, to inform the ASI team that there should not be any “invasive work” or excavation at the site.

Initially, when the matter was taken up around 10:45 am, the bench on being informed about the possible excavation of the premise had asked the SG to take instructions from the ASI till 11:15 am.

When the matter was again taken up by the bench, the SG informed the bench that the ASI was not contemplating any excavation but was only carrying out measurements, photography & radar imaging.

Although the court initially turned down the Muslim side’s request to stay the district court’s order, it on constant persuasion stayed the same.

The mosque’s “wazookhana” (a small reservoir for Muslim devotees to perform ritual ablutions), where a structure claimed by the Hindu litigants to be a “Shivling” exists, will not be part of the survey, following an earlier Supreme Court order protecting that spot in the complex.

District Judge A K Vishvesh has directed the ASI to submit a report to the court by August 4, along with video clips and photographs of the survey proceedings.

Rajasthan assembly adjourned as sacked minister Gudha, BJP MLAs create ruckus

July 24, 2023 by Nasheman

Rajendra Gudha

JAIPUR: The Rajasthan assembly was adjourned after sacked minister Rajendra Gudha, aided by BJP MLAs, created unruly scenes in the House during Zero Hour on Monday.

Gudha, who was sacked as minister of state on Friday after he cornered his own Congress government in the assembly, reached near Speaker C P Joshi’s chair with a “red diary” and had an argument with him.

After some time, Gudha reached near Parliamentary Affairs Minister Shanti Dhariwal and confronted him while he stood to speak.

Ugly scenes were witnessed at this time and BJP MLAs too created an uproar and stormed the well of the House over the issue of the “red diary”.

The speaker then adjourned the House.

Before the House began in the morning, Gudha told reporters that he would “disclose” details about the “red diary” in the assembly.

He said the diary contained some “secrets”.

Gudha, who held charge as minister of state for Sainik Kalyan (Independent Charge), Home Guard and Civil Defence, Panchayati Raj and Rural Development, was sacked on Friday evening, hours after he cornered the state government over the law and order situation and women safety in the assembly.

Manipur violence: Only way forward is to sack CM, impose President’s rule, says Kapil Sibal

July 22, 2023 by Nasheman

Congress leader Kapil Sibal

NEW DELHI: Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal on Saturday said the only way forward in Manipur is to sack Chief Minister N Biren Singh and impose President’s rule in the state.

More than 160 people have lost their lives, and several have been injured since ethnic violence broke out in the state on May 3 when a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

According to Article 356, President’s rule can be imposed in a state if a situation has arisen in which the government of the state cannot be carried on in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution.

Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur’s population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley, while tribals, which include Nagas and Kukis, constitute 40 per cent and reside mostly in the hill districts.

Sibal, who was a Union minister during the UPA-1 and UPA-2 governments, quit the Congress in May last year and was elected to the Rajya Sabha as an Independent member with the Samajwadi Party’s support.

He recently floated the non-electoral platform ‘Insaaf’, aimed at fighting injustice.
