Congress govt suffers jolt in Council as APMC Bill referred to select panel in Karnataka

July 19, 2023 by Nasheman

BENGALURU:  In a major setback to the Congress government, the APMC Bill, which was passed in the Legislative Assembly, was referred to the Select Committee of the Council on Tuesday following opposition by BJP and JDS members.

Dropping the amendments made to the APMC Act was one of the key promises made by the Congress party in its election manifesto. As BJP has more members in the Upper House, the ruling Congress could not get the Bill passed.

The minister stated that the laws were repealed by the Union Government and they were in force only in Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka. While other states, including some ruled by BJP, had withdrawn them.

“We are just implementing the laws that were in force in 2019. Due to the Act, we are unable to do a rate analysis or fix the minimum support price. It is not benefiting farmers as they are not earning more by selling their produce outside APMCs. Today, 162 APMCs are facing a crisis. There is a need to strengthen them and hence, this Bill has been tabled,” Patil said. He said the government received representations from 56 organisations of farmers seeking the withdrawal of changes made to the Act in 2020.

BJP and JDS, however, opposed the Bill saying that it is the right of the farmer to sell his produce wherever he wants to. The Bill will benefit middlemen more than farmers. BJP MLC Kota Shrinivasa Poojari advised the government to withdraw the Bill or at least make appropriate changes keeping the option open for farmers to sell their produce anywhere.

As BJP opposed the Bill, Congress members said that they were opposing the stand of their leader and Prime Minister Narendra Modi who withdrew the farm laws. Even JDS members, except GT Marithibbegowda, opposed the Bill.

The opposition parties proposed that the Bill be referred to the Select Committee. But Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs HK Patil said that it can’t be referred to the committee as the Council had discussed the Bill for three hours.

When Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti asked the government’s opinion on referring the Bill to the Select Committee, it replied in the negative. After this, Horatti initiated the voting process on the proposal to refer the Bill to the committee. While 31 members voted in favour of the proposal, 21 voted against it.

BJP remembered NDA only after 26 opposition parties came together: Sena (UBT)

July 19, 2023 by Nasheman

Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut

MUMBAI: Taking a dig at the BJP, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Wednesday said the ruling party remembered the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) only after 26 opposition parties came together to form the grouping ‘INDIA’.

Talking to reporters, he said the next meeting of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), the coalition formed to take on the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, will be in Mumbai.

“You have now remembered NDA only after we 26 (opposition) parties came together in Patna and Bengaluru as ‘INDIA’ for the country.

It is only after meetings that your lotus (BJP’s party symbol) started blooming,” Raut said.

He added that INDIA will decide who the next prime minister will be.

Leaders of 38 parties, part of the NDA, met in Delhi on Tuesday.

In a meeting of 26 opposition parties, which included the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT), in Bengaluru on Tuesday, a proposal was adopted unanimously to name their coalition as INDIA.

The original suggestion was to call it ‘Indian National Democratic Inclusive Alliance’, but the word ‘democratic’ was replaced with ‘developmental’ after some leaders said it sounded too similar to the ruling NDA.

Opposition meet in Bengaluru will have no impact: Bommai

Hubballi: Ahead of the meeting of opposition parties in Bengaluru, senior BJP leader Basavaraj Bommai on Sunday said such gatherings have no political meaning, and many such meetings may take place in the days ahead, but will not have any impact.

The former Chief Minister said opposition parties don’t have any specific programme to unite, other than to defeat Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP.

Leaders of 24 non-BJP parties have been invited for the meeting of opposition grouping being convened by Congress, on June 17 and 18, aimed at taking on the saffron party in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

“There is no strong opposition party at the all India level, there are more regional parties, so formation of a federation of opposition parties and them holding meetings has no political meaning, nor will it result in any political profit (to them),” Bommai said.

Speaking to reporters here, he said with the only intention of defeating Modi and BJP they are uniting, which shows that they don’t have their own strength.

“They don’t have any specific programme to unite, their only intention is to defeat Modi,” he added.

Further noting that the country today has progressed economically and socially, Bommai said, post COVID-19 the country has made a swift economic recovery.

“The developments that have taken place in the country after controlling the COVID has got international recognition to Modi. People are well aware that the country’s security, progress, economic development, education and social growth is only possible by Modi,” he said, adding that many such opposition meetings may take place in the days ahead, but it will not have any impact.

This meeting convened by the Congress, is the second such unity meeting of opposition parties, the first edition in Bihar’s Patna on June 23, saw the participation of 15 parties.

Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi is also expected to attend a dinner meeting on July 17 where leaders of these parties will be present.

July 18, 2023 by Nasheman

Dehradun: Devotees have been banned from taking photographs and making videos inside the premises of the Kedarnath Temple here.

The move comes after a recent video of a woman blogger proposing to her boyfriend in front of the temple went viral.

Shri Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee has put up boards at various places in the temple premises which read, ‘Do not enter the temple premises with mobile phones; any kind of photography and videography is completely prohibited inside the temple; and you are under the surveillance of CCTV cameras’.

The temple has also asked the people to wear “decent clothes” and desist from setting up tents or camps in the temple precincts.

BJP predicts collapse of Mamata govt in coming months, TMC refuses to give importance

BJP predicts collapse of Mamata govt in coming months, TMC refuses to give importance
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata: Stepping up the attack on the ruling Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, the BJP on Sunday said the collapse of the Mamata Banerjee government was just a matter of time.

Speaking at a party programme in his Bongaon Lok Sabha constituency in North 24 Parganas district, BJP MP Shantanu Thakur said the TMC government will not last beyond five months.

“The Mamata Banerjee government has outlived its utility. Had the TMC not resorted to widespread rigging in the recently concluded panchayat polls, the BJP would have bagged thousands of more seats. But this is going to be the last election under the supervision of TMC government where all the state machineries including the State Election Commission (SEC) have failed to play a neutral and impartial role,” Thakur, the Union Minister of State for Shipping, said.

“I have a hunch that this government will not last beyond five months,” he added.

Talking to reporters after attending an organisational meeting to take stock of the party’s panchayat poll performance, BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar said, “Anything can happen any time. Let’s see what happens.”

He added, “Who knows if there’s a people’s uprising against TMC’s misrule and terror. Who knows if TMC MLAs suddenly refuse to follow Mamata Banerjee’s way of functioning. I am not saying it will happen, it may not. But anything is possible in politics.”

About his meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi on July 14, Majumdar said, “The Centre will do everything possible to protect the lives of innocent people in West Bengal.”

Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari had earlier demanded imposition of Article 355 in West Bengal saying central intervention has become imperative in the state which had witnessed violence during panchayat polls.

He said, “Though a democratically elected government cannot be toppled, if it fails to perform its duty as envisaged in the Constitution, the Centre has to intervene to save it from slipping into lawlessness.”

Reacting to the comments of BJP leaders, TMC Rajya Sabha MP and party spokesperson Santanu Sen said, “All these BJP leaders, including Adhikari, are desperate to raise their ratings in Delhi by issuing threats to a government which came to power for the third time through a huge mandate two years ago and enjoys mass support.”

He added, “If out of desperation the BJP tries any misadventure” after the drubbing in panchayat polls, the people of state will thwart it.

Sen said BJP leaders like Adhikari and Ghosh had made similar predictions about the collapse of TMC government in December and January and “even spelt out specific dates,” but nothing happened.

TMC state general secretary and spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said BJP leaders are making such claims “to boost the morale of their rank and file,” who had been demoralised after the panchayat poll results.

“They (BJP leaders) are themselves aware about the absurdity of their claims,” he added.
