China won’t require COVID-19 tests for incoming travellers in a milestone in its reopening

August 29, 2023 by Nasheman

Taipei: China will no longer require a negative COVID-19 test result for incoming travellers starting Wednesday, a milestone in its reopening to the rest of the world after a three-year isolation that began with the country’s borders closing in March 2020.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin announced the change at a briefing in Beijing on Monday.

China in January ended quarantine requirements for its own citizens traveling from abroad, and over the past few months has gradually expanded the list of countries that Chinese people can travel to and increased the number of international flights.

Beijing ended its tough domestic “zero COVID” policy only in December, after years of draconian curbs that at times included full-city lockdowns and lengthy quarantines for people who were infected.

The restrictions slowed the world’s second-largest economy, leading to rising unemployment and occasional instances of unrest.

As part of those measures, incoming travelers were required to isolate for weeks at government-designated hotels. Residents were in some cases forcibly locked into their homes in attempts to stop the virus from spreading.

Protests in major cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Nanjing erupted in November over the COVID curbs, in the most direct challenge to the Communist Party’s rule since the Tiananmen protests of 1989.

In early December, authorities abruptly scrapped most COVID controls, ushering in a wave of infections that overwhelmed hospitals and morgues.

A U.S. federally funded study this month found the rapid dismantling of the “zero COVID” policy may have led to nearly 2 million excess deaths in the following two months. That number greatly exceeds official estimates of 60,000 deaths within a month of the lifting of the curbs.

During the years of “zero COVID,” local authorities occasionally imposed snap lockdowns in attempts to isolate infections, trapping people inside offices and apartment buildings.

From April until June last year, the city of Shanghai locked down its 25 million residents in one of the world’s largest pandemic-related mass lockdowns. Residents were required to take frequent PCR tests and had to rely on government food supplies, often described as insufficient.

Throughout the pandemic, Beijing touted its “zero COVID” policy and the initial relatively low number of infections as an example of the superiority of China’s political system over that of Western democracies.

Since lifting the COVID curbs, the government has been contending with a sluggish economic recovery. The restrictions, coupled with diplomatic frictions with the United States and other Western democracies, have driven some foreign companies to reduce their investments in China.

Don’t display RCB jersey in any form in movie: Delhi HC tells makers of Rajnikanth starrer ‘Jailer’

August 29, 2023 by Nasheman

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has issued a directive to the filmmakers of the Rajnikanth-starrer movie “Jailer,” stipulating that starting from September 1, none of the theaters should display the jersey of the IPL team Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in any form. This comes in response to a scene in the film where a contract killer is depicted wearing the RCB team jersey.

Regarding the film’s release on television, satellite, or any OTT platform, Justice Prathiba M Singh has ordered that an altered version of the movie should be broadcasted or telecasted prior to such releases.

Justice Singh’s decision was based on a lawsuit filed by the IPL team, Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited, against the filmmakers. The IPL team raised concerns about scenes in which its jersey was used in a derogatory manner. The contract killer wearing the RCB jersey reportedly made disparaging and misogynistic remarks about a woman in the movie. The RCB contended that the unauthorized use of the jersey in a negative context could damage its brand image and harm its brand equity.

The court observed that after the filing of the lawsuit, the filmmakers and the IPL team engaged in discussions and resolved their disputes. Both parties agreed that the filmmakers would alter the scenes featuring the team jersey to ensure that it is not identifiable as the RCB jersey. This alteration includes removing the primary colors of the RCB jersey and any branding of sponsors present on it.

Additionally, it was resolved that the film’s producers would carry out the necessary alterations before releasing the movie on television, satellite, or any OTT platform.

Since the film “Jailer” was already released in theaters on August 10, 2023, the filmmakers are required to make the alterations for theatrical showings by September 1, 2023, as part of the settlement.

Justice Singh has mandated that the filmmakers and all involved parties adhere to the terms and conditions agreed upon by both sides. Due to the settlement reached on the first hearing of the case, the court has directed the full court fee to be refunded to the plaintiff through their counsel.

Advocates Majumder, Priya Adlakha, and Vardaan Anand represented the plaintiff, while advocates Deepak Biswas, Harsh Buch, and Srishti Gupta appeared on behalf of the defendants.

Baby with heart ailment attended mid-air by doctors on board; Delhi plane diverted to Nagpur

August 29, 2023 by Nasheman

Nagpur: A New Delhi-bound Vistara flight was diverted to Nagpur due to a medical emergency involving a 14-month-old baby with a heart problem who was attended by a group of doctors travelling in the aircraft and later admitted to a hospital, an airport official said on Monday.

Due to the medical emergency, the Bengaluru-New Delhi plane was rerouted and it landed at the Nagpur airport on late Sunday night, he said.

Aejaz Shami, Deputy General Manager (Communications) of Nagpur-based KIMS-Kingsway Hospitals, where the baby was admitted, said the toddler fell unconscious after suffering a cardiac arrest during the flight.

“In a remarkable display of preparedness and professionalism, co-passengers from medical background on board promptly initiated life-saving measures by providing CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) to the baby passenger,” said Shami told PTI.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is a lifesaving technique used if someone is not breathing normally or their heart has stopped (cardiac arrest).

The hospital official said as the situation got critical, the airline team coordinated with the Nagpur airport authorities for an emergency landing.

An ambulance stationed at the airport immediately transferred the baby to the hospital, where the patient was attended by a senior consultant in paediatrics and neonatology, Shami said.

The baby, who was put on a ventilator and administered life-saving drugs, was unconscious, he said.

The hospital provides medical services at the Nagpur airport.

Court convicts man for abetment to suicide of MBBS student in 2012

August 29, 2023 by Nasheman

New Delhi: A Puducherry court has sentenced a local resident S Pradeep to five years of rigorous imprisonment in connection with the suicide of MBBS fourth-year student Priyadarshini with whom he was in a relationship, officials said here on Monday.

The case was handed over to the CBI on the orders of the Madras High Court on a petition of the mother of the Priyadarshini. The medical student had hung herself on the night of May 16, 2012, in her hostel room, they said.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) found that Priyadarshini was in love with Pradeep who had started avoiding her leading to cropping up of differences between them, they said.

“It was also alleged that the accused had sent an SMS to the victim casting aspersions on her character, which proved to be the breaking point and led to Priyadarshini committing suicide on the fateful late evening/night of May 16, 2012, by hanging from the ceiling fan in her hostel room,” CBI Spokesperson said here.

He said the SMS was recovered by the Forensic Science Department(FSD), Chennai, from the mobile phone of Priyadarshini after which the CBI filed a charge sheet on November 24, 2017, against Pradeep.

After six years of trial, the trial court convicted Pradeep.

“It is difficult to achieve conviction in cases with abetment to suicide charge because there has to be an irrefutable and strong connection that a particular action led the victim to commit suicide like a letter or a written word asking the victim to take her own life. I would say it is one of the few cases where a court has convicted for abetment to suicide,” a former CBI official said.

Scientist chased with swords by goons, his car vandalized in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: In yet another distressing road rage incident in Bengaluru, a scientist found himself targeted and attacked by a group of assailants in the Rautanahalli area. The aggressors reportedly vandalized his car and proceeded to chase him while brandishing swords, as recounted by the scientist.

Ashutosh Singh, identified as a scientist working at the Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Sciences, took to the social media platform X to share his harrowing experience. On August 24, at 12:45 AM, he wrote, “A narrow escape from local goons on Aug 24, 12:45 AM at Rauthanahalli Main road. They tried stopping my car, chased me with swords, shattering back glass. Traumatized by the delayed police response. Seeking justice, lodging FIR at Madanayakanahalli PS today. Urgent action is needed.”

Alok Kumar, Karnataka’s Additional Director General of Police (Traffic and Safety), termed the incident as ‘serious’ and confirmed that he had directed the authorities to take strict action against the perpetrators. He expressed, “It’s a very serious incident. Have directed the concerned to take stringent action.”

In the backdrop of an escalating number of road rage episodes in Bengaluru, Police Commissioner B Dayananda announced that records would be opened for individuals involved in such incidents, labeling them as rowdies. In recent months, many incidents of road rage have been documented on social media, thanks to dash cameras installed inside vehicles.

Dayananda previously interacted with X users and assured them that they were closely monitoring troublemakers engaged in these activities. He stated, “Incidents of road rage are being dealt with very sternly. Wherever such incidents are reported, police have detected the cases and apprehended the culprits. Besides, rowdy sheets are being opened in concerned police stations on such hooligans so as to keep track of them. There is ZERO TOLERANCE for road rage incidents in Bengaluru City.”

He further urged citizens to call 112 in case of emergencies. “I appeal to citizens to dial #Namma112 in case they are caught up in such a situation. Be rest assured, we are just a call away,” the police commissioner added.

One-day Assembly session in strife-torn Manipur today, Kuki MLAs likely to skip

August 29, 2023 by Nasheman

IMPHAL: The crucial one-day session of the Manipur Assembly on Tuesday is likely to hold a discussion on the state’s prevailing situation of ethnic strife, although most of the Kuki MLAs, regardless of party affiliations, are likely to skip the session over safety concerns.

Six of the ten MLAs from Kuki-dominated areas have already sought leave of absence from the speaker of the assembly.

Five legislators had applied for their leave to the speaker on Monday, while Social Welfare and Cooperation Minister Nemcha Kipgen, MLA of Kangpokpi, had sent her application on Saturday, an official said.

The MLAs who sought leave on Monday are Tribal and Hill Affairs Minister Letpao Haokip (Tengnoupal), Churachandpur MLA Khaute, Kimneo Hangshing of Saikul, Haokholet Kipgen of Saitu and Henglep legislator Letzamang Haokip.

The social welfare and cooperation minister, in her application, said that ever since ethnic violence erupted in Manipur on May 3, it has not been possible for her and her family members to stay in Imphal on security grounds.

“Due to the ongoing violent crisis and keeping in mind the law and order situation in Imphal, I will not be able to attend the upcoming one-day session,” she said.

After obituary references, committee reports will be presented and other businesses of the House will be held, the official said.

The state government had last month recommended a session by August 21, but later revised it to August 28 on not getting a green light from the Raj Bhavan.

Last week, the chief minister’s office announced that the assembly will reconvene from August 29.

The previous assembly session was held in March and according to the norms, a session must be held every six months.

The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) and the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) had recently denounced the convening of the session saying the present situation is not conducive for Kuki-Zo MLAs to attend it.

In a joint statement on Sunday, both organisations said considering the complete breakdown of law and order and the failure of the state government to protect the lives of the common people and officials, convening the session “is devoid of logic and rationality.”

On Saturday, former Manipur chief minister and Congress leader Okram Ibobi Singh had said the session is an eyewash and not in the public interest.

More than 160 people lost their lives and several hundreds were injured since ethnic clashes broke out in Manipur on May 3.

Gyanvapi row: Muslim side opposes transfer of cases to CJ-led HC bench

August 29, 2023 by Nasheman

A view of the Gyanvapi mosque

LUCKNOW:  A division bench of Allahabad High Court, headed by Chief Justice Pritinker Diwaker, on Monday adjourned the hearing of a bunch of petitions challenging the maintainability of the title suit seeking restoration of temple in place of Gyanvapi mosque till September 12. The hearing in the matter had been already concluded by the bench of Justice Prakash Padia on July 23, and had reserved the order to be delivered on Monday.

Earlier, the cases related to Kashi Vishwanath-Gyanvapi mosque title suit were transferred to a different bench, headed by CJ Diwaker on August 25, just a month after the single judge bench of Justice Padia concluded the hearing and had reserved the order to be delivered on August 28. In fact, Justice Padia had been hearing the matter since August 2021.

On the contrary, the opposite side’s (Hindu side) lawyer, Advocate Puneet Gupta said that it was the prerogative of the CJ to withdraw the case from a bench, where even after exhaustive arguments, the judgement was not delivered. He said it was the settled law that the CJ was the master of roaster and that he could decide which bench would hear what matters.

However, the CJ Diwaker said he will decide after the AIM submissions. The matter pending in the court includes a challenge to maintainability of a suit filed before a Varanasi Court, seeking restoration of a temple at the site where the Gyanvapi mosque exists.

The application was filed in a suit filed by the Ancient Idol Of Swayambhu Lord Vishweshwar And 5 Others in the year 1991 claiming the restoration of  the land on which the Gyanvapi Mosque stands to Hindus. The Plaintiffs, in the suit, sought a declaration that the land on which the Mosque is built  on the ruins of the Kashi Vishwanath temple. The suit has been challenged before the HC.
