PM Trudeau says fight with India not something Canada wants right now; seeks to ‘work constructively’ with New Delhi

November 13, 2023 by Nasheman

Justin Trudeau

OTTAWA: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has underlined that a “fight” with India was not something Canada wanted to be having right now but reiterated his allegations and said Ottawa wants to “work constructively” with New Delhi on this “very serious matter”.

Addressing the media on Friday, Trudeau also alleged that India violated the Vienna Convention as over 40 Canadian diplomats were shifted from India after New Delhi threatened to strip them of their diplomatic immunity.

India had designated Nijjar as a terrorist in 2020.

India rejected Trudeau’s allegations as “absurd” and “motivated”.

In his fresh remarks, Prime Minister Trudeau said that his government reached out to India to ask them to work together in getting to the bottom of this matter.

“From the very beginning when we learned of credible allegations that agents of the Indian govt were involved in the killing of a Canadian citizen on Canadian soil, we reached out to India to ask them to work with us in getting to the bottom of this matter,” he said while addressing the media.

He said Canada also reached out to its friends and allies like the United States and others to work on “this really serious violation of international law and of the sovereignty of a democracy” and added that this is something that we are taking “very seriously.”

“We will continue to work with all partners as law enforcement and investigative agencies continue to do their work. Canada is a country that will always stand up for the rule of law because if might starts to make right again, if bigger countries can violate international law without consequences, then the whole world gets more dangerous for everyone,” he added.

Prime Minister Trudeau said that Canada wants to “work constructively” with India on this “very serious matter”.

“From the very beginning, we shared the real allegations that we are deeply concerned about but we have reached out to the Indian govt and to partners around the world to get to the bottom of this, to take it seriously. That’s why we were so disappointed when India violated the Vienna Convention and arbitrarily revoked the diplomatic immunity of over 40 Canadian diplomats in India,” he said.

He reiterated that there were “serious reasons to believe that agents of the government of India could have been involved in the killing” of Nijjar.

“India’s response is to kick out a whole bunch of Canadian diplomats by violating their rights under the Vienna Convention. That is of concern to countries around the world because if a given country can just decide that their diplomats of another country are no longer protected, that makes international relations more dangerous and more serious,” he added.

“But every step of the way, we have tried to work constructively and positively with India, and we will continue to and that means continuing to work with Indian government diplomats. This is not a fight we want to be having right now but we will unequivocally always stand up for the rule of law,” he added.

His remarks came after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in New Delhi on Friday urged India to cooperate with an investigation by Canada into the killing of Nijjar.

Last week, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said New Delhi conveyed to the US side its serious concerns over increasing activities of pro-Khalistani elements in Canada.

“Insofar as Canada is concerned, we have been having very consistent conversations with all our friends and partners. Our position on this matter has been enunciated and explained in full detail on multiple occasions,” Kwatra said.

Days after Trudeau’s allegations in September, India temporarily suspended the issuance of visas to Canadian citizens and asked Ottawa to downsize its diplomatic presence in the country to ensure parity.

India resumed some visa services in Canada last month, more than a month after they were suspended.

Don’t get misled by Congress assurances, HD Kumaraswamy tells voters

November 13, 2023 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: JDS state president HD Kumaraswamy on Sunday tore into the state Congress government and its leaders for rampant corruption and failure on all fronts and appealed to voters in five election-bound states, including Telangana, not to be misled by their false assurances.

“I request voters in five states not to be misled by false assurances by Congress leaders,” the former CM said while addressing a press conference in Bengaluru. “In Karnataka, they not only announced five guarantees, but many of their candidates also distributed (gift) cards to people to purchase material worth Rs 5000 after the election. Be careful, one or two days before voting they will announce this (gift card) guarantee to mislead you. They did the same in Karnataka to come to power and want to expand it to the entire country,” he said.

Taking a dig at CM Siddaramaiah, Kumaraswamy said they promised to provide 200 units of free power but pushed Karnataka into darkness and now they are talking about giving five hours of uninterrupted power to farmers in Telangana, the state that gives 24 hours of power to farmers. Congress leaders are talking about filing 2 lakh government jobs in Telangana, but they have not been able to fill 2.5 lakh jobs in Karnataka, he said.

The Congress leaders are talking about the Shakti scheme (free travel for women in state transport corporation buses), but there is a shortage of buses and staff to maintain the fleet, and many women, including CM’s home district Mysuru, have not received money under the “Gruha Laxmi” scheme, he said and added that and there is a severe staff shortage in many departments, including Agriculture department.

He also slammed the Siddaramaiah government for stopping the Rs 4000 additional amount that was given to farmers along with Rs 6,000 from the PM Kisan Samman scheme. It was started during the BJP government in the state and stopped by the Siddaramaiah government, but now they are talking about giving financial assistance to farmers in Telangana, which is the first state in the country to give Rs 10,000
to farmers under the Raita Bandu scheme, he said.

The JDS leader accused the Congress central leadership of setting targets for all ministers to collect money for elections in other states. The former CM said there is no question of the regional party merging with BJP and they have retained their identity. “ We are part of NDA,” he said. ‘Rs 1.9 crore for imported furniture’

Kumaraswamy said a minister got Rs 1.9 crore worth of furniture imported for the CM’s official residence. He said as per his information it was not government money, but a minister got it. “It is an updated version of the Hublot watch,” he said referring to the controversy over gifting of an expensive watch to Siddaramaiah during his previous tenure as CM.

Rahul, Shreyas tons give India ninth win on the trot

November 13, 2023 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: On Sunday morning, the Garden City decked itself up for the Festival of Lights, Deepavali. As a pleasant early winter sun started making its presence felt, a vast majority of them, with their shiny new clothes, filled Queens Road and Cubbon Road as they began walking towards the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Even if the World Cup’s final league match was devoid of any jeopardy — the hosts had already rubber-stamped their entry into the last four winning eight out of eight — they didn’t want to let slip the momentum they had built over the last five weeks. So, as expected, they named an unchanged side.
As soon as Rohit Sharma won the toss, he had no hesitation in batting first on a strip with lots of runs.

The total was always going to be a mountain to climb for the Netherlands and they were bowled out for 250 to give the hosts a ninth straight World Cup win. Only once before have they managed this feat but that came across two WCs (2011 and 2015). As has been the case in several games, the bowlers shared the wickets. Even if Mohammed Shami had a rare off night in terms of taking wickets, the four other frontline bowlers picked two wickets each. Virat Kohli, who bowled three overs much to the delight of the crowd, and Rohit Sharma (not a misprint), picked one each as the hosts protected their pacers with the semifinal fixture on Wednesday. Even Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav rolled their arms over before the skipper picked the final wicket of the night.

If Rohit (61, 8×4, 2×6), Shubman Gill (51 3×4, 4×6) and Kohli (51 5×4, 1×6) came up with the five-course degustation menu, Iyer and Rahul’s back-end domination meant the collective efforts of the batting group had resulted in a winning combination. The already well-set pair put the foot down at the death and ended up scoring 126 runs across the last 10 overs.

The continued efficiency of India’s middle-order will stand them in good stead when the business end of the event begins next week with the first of the two semifinals. The hosts had a perennial question mark over their Nos. 4 and 5 at the last World Cup. That sort of indecisiveness cost them against New Zealand in the semifinal of the last edition in 2019. There’s no such issue this time out as the team has a settled look to it.

Coach Rahul Dravid had called it ‘exceptional’ on Saturday. “Our middle-order has been truly exceptional in this tournament,” he had said. “I can look back at this whole campaign… one knock here, two knocks there. A Shreyas innings, a Rahul knock, Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja) innings in Dharamsala. You can look at a lot of these small, small things, and actually that’s what really gives you those wins at the end of the day. So, it’s a combination of things.”

On Monday, the players will leave for Mumbai. Standing between them and the final is New Zealand. If the batting unit can find their mojo again — they have been on song throughout the tournament — there is no reason to suggest they won’t be in the final on November 19.

Brief scores: India 410/4 in 50 overs (Rohit Sharma 61, Shubman Gill 51, Virat Kohli 51, Shreyas Iyer 128*, KL Rahul 102,    Netherlands  250/9 in 50 overs Max ODowd 30, Colin Ackermann 35, SKYbrand Engelbrecht 45).

Heavy fighting around Gaza’s largest hospital leaves many trapped inside

November 13, 2023 by Nasheman

Hundreds of patients were trapped and thousands of people sought shelter around Gaza’s largest hospital on Monday, as Israeli troops and Hamas fighters battled near the compound. The Al-Shifa facility in Gaza City has become a focal point in the territory’s bloodiest-ever war, which erupted five weeks ago.

A day after Netanyahu said Israel was bringing its “full force” with the aim of ending Hamas’ 16-year rule in Gaza, residents reported heavy airstrikes and shelling, including around Shifa Hospital.

Israel, without providing evidence, has accused Hamas of concealing a command post inside and under the compound, allegations denied by Hamas and hospital staff.

On Sunday, witnesses at the hospital told AFP that “violent fighting” raged throughout the night. The sounds of small arms fire and aerial bombardments were echoing across the sprawling complex, amid reports that the infirm — including children — were dying for lack of basic provisions.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and other UN agencies said as many as 3,000 patients and staff are sheltering inside without adequate fuel, water or food.

Across Gaza City, at the Al-Quds hospital the picture was also said to be dire, with the Palestinian Red Crescent warning it was now out of service due to lack of generator fuel.

Twenty of Gaza’s 36 hospitals are “no longer functioning”, according to the UN’s humanitarian agency.

On October 7, Hamas launched a wave of attacks on Israel that killed 1,200 people, most of them civilians.

Israel’s relentless campaign in response has killed at least 11,180 people in Gaza, including 4,609 children, according to the Hamas government’s media office.

3,700 affected as passport processing suffers glitch

November 11, 2023 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: None of the passport appointments scheduled for Friday across South India could be honoured due to a technical glitch with the Passport portal. Nearly 3,700 applicants were impacted across Karnataka.

Applicants who visited Lal Bagh and Marthahalli Passport Seva Kendra (PSKs) went back disappointed after they were told to reschedule their appointments. It was the same story at three other PSKs in the state in Mangaluru, Hubballi and Kalaburagi and 23 post office PSKs in the state. Particularly hit were those who had applied through Tatkal as these are emergency appointments.

Regional Passport Officer, Bengaluru, K Krishna said, “A technical issue affected the issue of passports across South India. The first stage of processing where the biometrics of the individual is taken could not be done. This is the first time an entire day has been affected. We asked people to wait for some time to check if it could be set right, but it did not happen. It was finally rectified by 6 pm.”

Many took to X to vent their frustration. Pradeep posted this to the RPO: Why didn’t u send SMS to people? Sreekar S Chitlur posted that his friend had a tatkal appointment as she had to travel urgently. “Please conduct a passport mela tomorrow and honour the applicants who have taken the appointments today,” he added.

On the status of those whose appointments were cancelled, the RPO said, “We received many mails. We will give priority to those who need it urgently and try to give them appointments on Monday or Tuesday.” Tatkal appointments in Bengaluru are available within three working days, while in Hubballi and Mangaluru it is within a day, he added. Chief Postmaster General, Karnataka Circle, K Prakash confirmed that all post office PSKs, including the only one in Bengaluru at the Jalahalli post office, were not operational.

Pakistan have an impossible task at hand; embattled England aim Champions Trophy berth

November 11, 2023 by Nasheman

KOLKATA: Nothing less than a miracle will help Pakistan as they face a near-impossible task of making the semifinals by winning with an unthinkable margin, while a charged-up England will look to qualify for the Champions Trophy when the two sides clash in the World Cup here on Saturday.

New Zealand’s net run-rate boosting five wicket-win over Sri Lanka has virtually shattered Pakistan’s semifinal hopes.

The 1992 champions now have to beat England by an improbable margin.

New Zealand’s NRR is +0.743 while Pakistan’s is +0.036, and for the Babar Azam-led side to eclipse the former to qualify as the fourth side, it has to win by around 287 runs batting first.

While chasing, Pakistan need to win with 284 balls to spare. That is an impractical task.

For defending champions England, the World Cup title defence dream may have been over for quite some time now but the Jos Buttler-led side will aim to finish inside top-8 to make the cut for the 2025 Champions Trophy.

As things stand, it’s a four-way race with Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and the Netherlands also in the mix with England.

Their 160-run win over the Netherlands in the last match has given down-and-out England the much-needed late charge as they have climbed up to the seventh spot and face the easiest equation among the four teams.

A win against Pakistan should seal the spot, considering that both Bangladesh and the Netherlands face tough opponents in Australia and India respectively, and also have inferior NRRs than England.

Pakistan have failed to live up to the expectations in this World Cup but has shown some late surge in the last two matches to stay alive.

Having played two matches already at Eden Gardens, Pakistan has better knowledge about the conditions which have been slow and spin-friendly during the middle overs.

But they would still need their top-five to fire, which has not been the case so far.

Explosive opener Fakhar Zaman, who put on a spectacular show of power-hitting against New Zealand, missing five matches has been a mystery.

The left-hander has shown what he’s capable of in the last two matches.

He along with Babar, in an unbroken 194-run alliance from 141 balls in their DLS win over New Zealand in the last match, have demonstrated that they can successfully tackle any equation.

England’s late surge

About a month separated England from their first and last win in the global showpiece.

In between, they lost five matches in a row to see their World Cup campaign go up in smoke.

Ben Stokes and David Malan have done well in the previous two games and it will be an interesting battle against the likes of Shaheen Shah Afridi and Hasan Rauf.

Stokes is slowly coming to his own with a half-century and an 84-ball 108 in the last two matches, while opener Malan has been their best batter in a forgettable World Cup.

Their only batter with 300-plus runs, Malan has been consistently giving them starts.

He has all the shots in his armoury to excel at the Eden Gardens which has behaved differently this time.

England will hope that the likes of Joe Root, Harry Brook and skipper Jos Buttler also get some runs and end their disastrous World Cup campaign on a high.

Another bright spot for England in their big win was the way Chris Woakes shone with both bat and ball.

He complimented Stokes with a quick fifty and then gave England the perfect start en route to finishing with tidy figures of 1/19 in seven overs.

In Woakes and David Willey, England has the pacers up-front to make a mark, and it would be an intriguing battle against Pakistan’s in-form Fakhar and Babar, who are due for a big knock.

On spin-friendly conditions, England will also rely on Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid, who will look to strangulate Pakistan’s progress in the middle overs.

England has been a white-ball champion side and it is simply beyond logic why it failed to recreate the magic in this World Cup.

England: Jos Buttler (c), Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes, Brydon Carse, David Willey, Mark Wood and Chris Woakes.

Pakistan: Babar Azam (c), Shadab Khan, Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Abdullah Shafique, Mohammad Rizwan, Saud Shakeel, Iftikhar Ahmed, Salman Ali Agha, Mohammad Nawaz, Usama Mir, Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Wasim.

Tension between DK brothers, Munirathna flares up again

November 11, 2023 by Nasheman

BENGALURU: The tension between RR Nagar MLA Munirathna and the DK brothers became apparent once again when Munirathna visited RR Nagar on Friday, where some miscreants had damaged the windshields of parked cars. Munirathna was riled when he was greeted with slogans of “Jai DK Suresh MP!” by those gathered. The police are to be blamed for the deteriorating law and order situation in RR Nagar. He alleged that marijuana is sold here, and police personnel are not doing their job. Pointing out that when he went to check on the attack on vehicles, the media was there but no policeman was visible.

It may be recalled that defeated Congress candidate Kusuma Hanumantharaya, wife of former IAS officer DK Ravi, is close to the DK brothers, and Munirathna had complained during his last protest that her words were given more importance than his, in his constituency.

Asked about the allegations, Additional Commissioner, L&O, Suresh said, “There is an ongoing drive against peddling of marijuana and drugs, and on Thursday too, there was a large seizure. As far as damage to cars is concerned, we take these cases seriously and if there are repeat offenders, book them under stringent sections of the law.’’
