More minority leaders may move away from JDS soon

September 25, 2023 by Nasheman

BENGALURU:   Two days after the JDS officially agreed to join the NDA, the regional party is geared for action. But even as former chief minister HD Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil Kumaraswamy met senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader  BS Yediyurappa to seek his blessings, murmurs of dissent grew loud, and some leaders of the Janata Dal (Secular) (JDS) minority cell decided to quit the party.

In fact, mass resignations are expected soon. JDS Vice-President Syed Shafiulla Saheb had sent his resignation letter to JDS President CM Ibrahim, who passed it on to party supremo and former prime minister HD Deve Gowda. Spokesperson UT Farzana Ashraf also resigned from the party membership. At a meeting of minority leaders on Sunday, more leaders decided to quit. Ibrahim, who has been mum, is likely to take a decision at the earliest. He had quit the Congress and joined JDS a few years ago.

Meanwhile, Kumaraswamy continued to slam the state government for proposing to open bars in every village which has a population of over 3,000. In a series of posts on his social media account, Kumaraswamy said Karnataka is a prosperous state. “By providing liquor to every household, the government is giving liquor guarantee to increase its revenue,” he said. The government is making Karnataka into a drunkards’ adda,’’ he said.

The government claimed to empower women with the Shakti scheme, but is destroying their families with liquor, he added. Housing Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan slammed Kumaraswamy, and challenged him to say whether he would win from Channapatna without Muslim votes. “Let HD Revanna, Turuvekere Krishnappa, Chikkanayakanahalli, Suresh Babu, Gurmitkal Nagangouda Kandakur, Deodurga Karemma and Chennarayapatna Balakrishna say Muslims need not vote for them,” he said.

He said Kumaraswamy did not win by a big margin in Channapatna and had Muslims not supported him, he would have been defeated. On the other hand, BJP leaders too are unhappy with the alliance, as it may cost them their tickets in the Lok Sabha elections.

“JDS does not have a presence in Karnataka, their number dropped to 19 in the assembly election, and many leaders joined the Congress. Their only Lok Sabha seat of Hassan is in dispute. We are not going to benefit,” said a BJP leader, on the condition of anonymity.

Asian Games: Indian rowers rally, bag two bronze medals

September 25, 2023 by Nasheman

HANGZHOU: Indian rowers staged twin comebacks to end the day with two bronze and take their overall tally to five medals in the watersport at the Asian Games here on Monday.

The day began with the quartet of Jaswinder Singh, Bheem Singh, Punit Kumar and Ashish Goliyan narrowly missing a silver in men’s fours event.

In the men’s four event too, after lying fourth in the final 500metre of the 2000m race, the quartet showed superb coordination to finish third with 6:10.81s, and was pipped by China (6:10.04) by a fraction of seconds.

Uzbekistan took the top spot in the podium with a timing of 6:04.96.

Indian rower Balraj Panwar however missed out on a maiden Asian Games podium, finishing fourth in the men’s single sculls.

The 24-year-old from Karnal, who was among the top-three at the 1500-mark, faltered in the final 500m to slip to fourth place with a timing of 7:08.79s.

He finished less than nine seconds behind Hong Kong’s Hin Chun Chiu who took the bronze medal (7:00.55).

China’s Liang Zang secured the gold with 6:57.06, while Japan’s Ryuta Arakawa (6:59.79) and Hong Kong’s Hin Chun Chiu finished with silver and bronze respectively.

The Indian oarswomen disappointed the most, finishing bottom in the five-team field of the women’s eight with a timing of 7:05.71s, way behind China who took the gold medal clocking 6:33.61.

The Indian team of Sonali Swain, Ritu Kaudi, Priya Devi Thangjam, Varsha Kattathara, Aswathi Padinjarayil, Mrunmayee Salgaonkar, Tendenthoi Devi Haobijam, Rukmani and Geetanjali Gurugubelli hardly posed any challenge to their opponents.

Even the fourth-placed Thailand finished more than 15 seconds ahead of the Indians.

Indian rowers have now won two silver and three bronze medals.

India had bagged two silver and a bronze medal on Sunday.

1,600 illegal schools, PU colleges in state, says Karnataka education minister

September 25, 2023 by Nasheman

MANGALURU:  Stating that over 1,600 schools and PU colleges are operating illegally in the state, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa said the government is cautious in taking action against them in the interest of students who have taken admission in those institutes.

Addressing the media here on Sunday, Bangarappa said the managements that have availed permission to run these institutes and the ones that are actually running them are different, and the addresses that are mentioned are also different. In order to make them fall in line, he said the norms to avail permission have been made more strict from the next academic year.

Referring to the matter of reducing weight of school bags, he said that his department has worked out a formula to reduce the same by 1/3rd compared to the present weight.  He justified the government’s decision to conduct Board exams for Classes 9 and 11, stating that it will help them prepare for the public exams in Classes 10 and 12.

Stating that over 53,000 government school teacher posts remain vacant in the state, he said there will be marked improvement in this regard in a year. About 2,000 bi-lingual Karnataka Public Schools (KPS) will be opened, and there will be one KPS for every 2-3 gram panchayats.

To a query, the minister stated that some PU colleges conducting classes for 12 hours a day is not acceptable, and called for a stop to such practices.

September 25, 2023 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI: under flak for using derogatory words against BSP MP Danish Ali in Lok Sabha, met the ruling party president J P Nadda on Monday.

Bidhuri made certain objectionable remarks targeted at BSP member Kunwar Danish Ali on Thursday night during a discussion in the Lok Sabha on the success of the Chandrayaan-3 mission.

Bidhuri met Nadda at the BJP headquarters, days after he was issued a show-cause notice by the party for his remarks. There was no official word on what transpired in the meeting.

Amid demand by several opposition parties that take action against him, many BJP MPs have written to the Chair, alleging that Ali “instigated” Bidhuri and seeking a probe into his utterances as well.

The said remarks were expunged from Parliamentary records and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh immediately expressed regret for Bidhuri’s behaviour in the House.

Delhi govt’s first major bureaucratic reshuffle under new law, 8 IAS officers given new postings

September 22, 2023 by Nasheman

New Delhi: The Delhi government Thursday effected the first major bureaucratic reshuffle after the enactment of the GNCTD (Amendment) Act, 2023, assigning new roles to eight AGMUT cadre IAS officers transferred to the city from other states and union territories.

An order issued by the Services department, a day after Chief Minister Arvinnd Kejriwal-headed National Capital Civil Services Authority (NCCSA) recommended postings of Group ‘A’ officers, also gave additional charges to some senior bureaucrats.

According to the order, Land and Building Additional Chief Secretary Manish Gupta will hold additional charge as the Chief Executive Officer of Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board and Managing Director of the Shahjahanabad Redevelopment Corporation.

He already has additional charges of the Labour and Industries Department.

A Anbarasu, who holds the charge of principal commissioner (trade and taxes), will also act as the chief executive officer of the Delhi Jal Board.

HPS Sran, who is the secretary in the public grievance commission with additional charge of additional inspector general (prisons), has been appointed as secretary in the information technology department and managing director of Geospatial Data Limited.

Art, culture and languages department secretary Chokha Ram Garg has been given additional charge of director Union Territory Civil Services.

The Assam Goa Mizoram and Union Territories (AGMUT) cadre officers awaiting postings too have been given charge of different departments.

These IAS officers are: Vinod P Kavle (2008 batch) who has been given the charge of secretary in social welfare and women and child development departments; Anil Kumar Singh (2011 batch) now posted as registrar (cooperative societies).

Ajay Kumar Bisht (2011) batch has been posted as special commissioner in trade and taxes department, the order said.

The NCCSA on Wednesday recommended the posting of eight IAS officers awaiting posting since their transfer to Delhi a couple of months ago, as well as disciplinary proceedings against some serving officers of the Delhi government.

The Authority headed by Chief Minister also includes chief secretary and principal secretary (home) of Delhi government. It takes call on services matters, including transfer and posting of Group ‘A’ officers and disciplinary action against officials concerned in the Delhi government.

It was created through an ordinance of Centre (now replaced by GNCTD Amendment Act, 2023) that reversed the effect of a Supreme Court verdict in May that gave the Delhi government executive control over services matters that was earlier exercised by the Lt Governor.

Voting begins for Delhi University Students’ Union polls

September 22, 2023 by Nasheman

New Delhi : Voting for the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) election has begun for the students of the day classes, whereas the students of the evening classes will cast their votes from 3 pm.

While the students of the day classes can cast their votes until 1 pm, those from the evening classes will have time until 7.30 pm to cast their votes.

The counting of votes will be taken up on Saturday.

The DUSU polls were last held in 2019. The election could not be held in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19 while possible disruptions to the academic calendar prevented its conduct in 2022.

Twenty-four candidates are in the fray for the students’ body election this time.

The RSS-affiliated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), Congress’s students’ wing National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), CPI(M)-backed Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and the All India Students’ Association (AISA), affiliated to the CPI-ML (Liberation), have fielded candidates for all four posts.

The ABVP had won three of the four seats in the 2019 DUSU polls.

Around one lakh students will vote in the election, which also acts as a stepping stone for budding politicians.

The DUSU is the main representative body for most Delhi University colleges and faculties. Each college also has its own students’ union, elections to which are held annually.

Maharashtra govt puts on hold women empowerment scheme within 24 hours of announcement

September 22, 2023 by Nasheman

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra government has put on hold a women empowerment scheme within 24 hours of issuing an order regarding its implementation.

The scheme “Mukhymantri Mahila Sashaktikaran Abhiyan” was to be implemented in the state from October 2, 2023, to October 1, 2024.

The programme was to be monitored by the woman and child development minister, who would submit monthly reports to the chief minister and deputy chief minister, said the order issued on September 20. The department secretary was to be the nodal officer.

A special officer was to be appointed at the state level, while the woman and child development commissioner, Pune, was to head the programme.

As per the order, the programme was a unified platform to implement all programmes and policies of the state and central governments related to women for their socio-economic development.

However, a fresh notification on September 21 said the order issued the previous day had been stayed until further orders.

The women and child development ministry is handled by NCP’s Aditi Tatkare, the lone woman in the state cabinet who switched sides to join the Eknath Shinde-led government on July 2.

Notably, despite the latest notification to stay the implementation, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde mentioned the scheme when he spoke to reporters late Thursday night after the Rajya Sabha passed the women’s reservation bill to reserve one-third of seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women.

Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Shinde said, his government has taken the decision to implement the ‘NaMo women empowerment scheme’ to ensure women get the benefits of all government programmes.

NMIMS Bengaluru organises Walkathon to create Mental Health

September 22, 2023 by Nasheman

Nasheman news

Bengaluru, 21st September 2023: In its persevering commitment towards fostering
mental health awareness, Udyam, the Corporate Social Responsibility Committee of
SVKM’s NMIMS Bengaluru, recently organised a Walkathon. The theme of the walkathon
was ‘Walk for a Cause: Mental Health Awareness’ for its School of Business Management
(SBM) students.

NMIMS Bengaluru organises Walkathon to create Mental Health Awareness

The Walkathon began with students assembling at the Royal Meenakshi Mall. The
journey concluded at Windsor Amulyam. The 5 Km journey was replete with students
expressing themselves through slogans and banners demonstrating the central theme of
the event. The enthusiasm and energy levels among the participants were a sight to
behold. More than 150 students participated in the walkathon, making it a success.
In order to create awareness about mental health amongst the general public, an
inspirational ‘Nukkad Natak’ or a street play was performed following the walk. The
performance was divided into three segments. Each of the three acts covered distinct
topics with the focus of making people realise the positive results of sound mental
health. It was demonstrated by recreating real-life scenarios faced by the youth. The
performance concluded with the message of dealing with the hard times and emerging
victorious.

Professor Janaki Anant, the faculty mentor at Udyam, was the guiding light of the
students throughout the event. She created a safe space for students and asked them to
share their own stories of battling mental health. Each story provided deep insights into
the tough times faced by students and how they embraced reality and emerged out of it
successfully. The exercise reassured students that they were not alone in their MBA
journey at NMIMS SBM.
The walkathon resulted in three key learnings. Firstly, how the internal and external
pressures we build within us sow seeds of mental distress and the unwanted steps we

end up taking regarding our lives. Secondly, how failure leads to self-doubt, pain and
anguish. This further contributes to unhealthy behavioural patterns and lifestyles.
Lastly, seeking the right help and support can actually help us to release and overcome
the burden of the unaddressed trauma within.
The success of the walkathon was a result of Udyam’s commitment towards increasing
public awareness about mental health. The committee is aimed at contributing
to making the world more liveable and equitable. It is also a testament to the changing
times and the NMIMS’ commitment towards creating healthier campuses.

Commending the success of the event, Dr. Narayani Ramachandran, Deputy Director,
NMIMS Bengaluru, said, “The success of the walkathon on mental awareness exemplifies
the positive change we’re witnessing, which calls for an environment conducive for growth
and happiness. The event reflects NMIMS Bengaluru’s commitment to shaping a better
society, where we shun the stigma around health issues. Rather, we must together create a
place where mental wellbeing is prioritised and positivity is encouraged.”
Ms. Gitanjana, the Counsellor at NMIMS Bengaluru, infused a sense of optimism and
positive energy through her words. Stressing the importance of seeking help and
overcoming hardships when the going gets tough, she shared, “In the face of adversity, it
is important to embrace the strength in seeking help and supporting one another. Let’s
aim to foster a community where seeking therapy is seen as a courageous step towards
personal growth.”

About NMIMS Bengaluru
The School of Business Management (SBM) Bengaluru campus has been ranked first in
the “Top B-Schools under Private Universities” category in Karnataka by Open

Today Magazine ranked NMIMS Bengaluru third in the city-wise category, seventh in
the south-zone category, and 15th among the private B-schools.

‘Strongly oppose idea of Khalistan’, says Congress Punjab chief amid India-Canada row

September 22, 2023 by Nasheman

PUNJAB: Amid the India-Canada standoff, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring Friday made it clear that they strongly oppose the idea of Khalistan but in the same breath opposed labelling of their youth as “anti-nationals”.

He also emphasised that the “malicious attempts to tarnish our youngsters must be repulsed”.  “While we at @INCPunjab strongly oppose the idea of Khalistan & have actively fought our battles against anti-national forces, I strongly oppose labelling of our youngsters like @Shubhworldwide, who speak for Punjab as anti-nationals. We Punjabis don’t need to give any proof about our nationalism. This propaganda being pushed by certain forces against Punjabis to undermine us is highly condemnable. Malicious attempts to tarnish our youngsters must be repulsed. Jai Hind! Jai Punjab!”, Amrinder Singh Raja Warring posted on X.

Congress MP Ravneet Singh Bittu on Thursday said that Ottawa has taken on the role of what Pakistan used to be earlier. He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured him that Indian students in Canada will be taken care off.

“I had a discussion (regarding the students in Canada) with PM Modi in the Parliament yesterday and he told me that they’ll take care of it …” Ravaneet Singh said, adding, “Canada has taken the role of how Pakistan used to be earlier…”

Tensions escalated in India-Canada relations after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday alleged that the Indian government was Nijjar, who was a designated terrorist in India, was gunned down outside a Gurdwara, in a parking area in Canada’s Surrey, British Columbia on June 18.

The allegations made by the Canadian Prime Minister and foreign minister were rejected by the Ministry of External Affairs in India which dubbed the statements as absurd.

Speaking about Nijjar, Ravaneet Singh said that the designated terrorist was the right hand of the killers who assassinated his grandfather.“Hardeep Singh Nijjar was the right hand of the killers who assassinated my grandfather (former Punjab CM Beant Singh). He went there in 1993 and he got the citizenship…Nijjar and company are out of the 10 most wanted gangsters and drug peddlers…,” he added.

Mbappé and Hakimi score as PSG wins 2-0 against Dortmund in Champions League

September 20, 2023 by Nasheman

PARIS: Striker Kylian Mbappé continued his scoring spree and right-back Achraf Hakimi also found the net as Paris Saint-Germain opened its Champions League campaign with a 2-0 home win against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday.

Mbappé’s penalty put PSG ahead in the 49th minute following a video review. Referee Jesús Gil Manzano stuck to his decision and ruled that defender Niklas Süle handled the ball from Mbappé’s shot.

Nine minutes later, Kobel was beaten from close range when Hakimi swapped passes with midfielder Vitinha and cut inside a defender before curling the ball into the bottom left corner with the outside of his right foot.

“It’s a very important game for us, we’ve started the competition well,” said the 23-year-old Portugal international Vitinha, who is in his second season with PSG. “It’s important for me as well. I want to help the team even more in the upcoming matches.”

In the other Group F game, seven-time European champion AC Milan wasted chances in a 0-0 draw with Newcastle.

PSG, which has never won the competition, played last season with superstar Lionel Messi and Neymar in attack, yet went out in the last 16 for the second straight season.

That led to coach Christophe Galtier’s dismissal and the hiring of former Barcelona coach Luis Enrique.

“We needed to do better in the last 15 minutes of the match, but otherwise it’s pretty much a perfect night,” Luis Enrique said.

When Luis Enrique took charge, he was thrust into a difficult situation.

Messi and Neymar left PSG, leaving only Mbappé from that attack.

He has been joined by forward Randal Kolo Muani, who started his first game since signing from Eintracht Frankfurt for 95 million euros (USD 103 million). Kolo Muani played at center forward and was flanked by former Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembélé and Mbappé at Parc des Princes.

A tight opening saw Dutch forward Donyell Malen have a shot comfortably saved by goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and Vitinha hit the post in the 19th. Kolo Muani’s low strike was saved near the end of a drab first half.

“We chased the ball a lot,” Dortmund captain Emre Can said. “It was not a good performance as we gave away the ball too fast.”

PSG stepped things up after the break.

Dembélé’s cross from the right found Mbappé, whose snapshot clipped Süle’s arm as he was falling down and the spot kick was awarded despite Dortmund’s protests.

Both clubs have made a shaky start to their league campaigns. PSG is fifth after losing at home to Nice last Friday and Dortmund is seventh. PSG’s vulnerability to quick counterattacks was ruthlessly exposed by Nice.

This was a more composed performance, although coach Edin Terzić’s Dortmund side offered very little in attack.

“We can say clearly that we were not brave enough in the first half,” Terzić said. “We wanted to be braver, attack more, leave our positions more.”

PSG plays at Newcastle and Dortmund hosts Milan on Oct. 4.
