Fire extinguisher on tracks sparks scare probe finds it to be railway property

September 30, 2024 by Nasheman

Kanpur (UP) A fire extinguisher that may have accidentally fallen off a train set off a scare on Sunday when the driver of another passenger train applied brakes after spotting the cylinder-like object on the rail tracks between Govindpuri and Bhimsen stations here, according to officials.

“The incident occurred when the train was heading to Lucknow from Mumbai. It had hardly reached Govindpuri station when the driver spotted a cylinder on the tracks at around 4 am on Sunday,” Additional Director General (Railways) Prakash D said.

The loco pilot immediately passed the information to the control room. The cylinder was later found to be a fire extinguisher, belonging to the railways.

The ADG said that the railway officials launched an investigation jointly with the Railway Protection Force(RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) and found there was no criminal intent behind the act.

The findings further claimed that there is no external or other criminal involvement in this case, ADG added.

“In the inquiry report, the railway officials stated that the fire safety cylinder was railway property and it was issued by the section engineer (carriage & wagon) Gorakhpur and it may have fallen from any other train accidentally,” said the ADG adding that no FIR has been lodged regarding the matter.

The railway officials are on an alert following similar incidents recently.

A 16-year-old boy was apprehended for allegedly putting a fencing pillar on the Banda-Mahoba rail track, causing disruptions on Saturday. The driver of a passenger train had to apply emergency brakes to stop the train after he noticed the concrete pillar on the tracks, the police said.

Also, the engine of a train hit a stone placed on the railway track in the Bairia area in Ballia on Saturday, officials said, adding that no damage was caused.

The RPF has formed a special team to solve the case, and patrolling is being done on the rail route, while police has lodged an FIR, the officials said.

RPF Inspector VK Singh told PTI, “We believe that this has been done with the intention of derailing the train. The current conclusion of the team in this case is that some unknown person has placed the stone.”

On September 8, an alleged attempt to derail the Kalindi Express, heading towards Bhiwani from Prayagraj, was reported when an LPG cylinder was found on the tracks in Kanpur.

Just a week ago, an empty gas cylinder was also found on the tracks by a goods train loco pilot near Prempur railway station. Both incidents are being investigated.

Tripura: Woman tied to tree, burnt alive by sons

Agartala: A 62-year-old woman was tied to a tree and allegedly burnt alive by her two sons in West Tripura, officials said on Sunday.

Police said they have arrested the sons, and suspect that a family dispute might have led to the gruesome murder.

The incident happened on Saturday night in Khamarbari in the Champaknagar police station area, they said.

The woman lived with her two sons after she lost her husband around one-and-a-half-year ago. Her other son lived in Agartala.

“After receiving an input that a woman was set on fire, a police team rushed there and found the burnt body tied to a tree. We took the body to the hospital for post-mortem examination,” Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Jirania Kamal Krishna Koloi told PTI.

“We have arrested her two sons for their alleged involvement in the case. They will be produced before the court on Monday, seeking police remand for interrogation. A family dispute may be the reason behind the incident,” he said.

An investigation is underway, he added.

Nearly 200 killed in floods landslides in Nepal

September 30, 2024 by Nasheman

Kathmandu: The death toll from rain-induced floods and landslides across Nepal reached nearly 200 on Monday, with at least 30 people still missing, according to the police.

Incessant rainfall from last Friday triggered floods and landslides, wreaking havoc in the Himalayan nation.

At least 192 people have been killed in the continuous rainfall, floods, landslides and inundation, officials from the Nepal Police said.

They said 94 others have also been injured nationwide in the disaster, while 30 others remain missing.

The government has given high priority to search, rescue, and relief operations, MyRepublica news portal reported, quoting Home Ministry Spokesperson Rishiram Tiwari.

Security agencies across the country have been deployed for search, rescue and relief efforts, and more than 4,500 disaster-affected individuals have been rescued so far, the report said.

While those injured are receiving free treatment, food and other emergency relief materials have been provided to others affected by the floods.

Numerous roads throughout the nation are severely damaged, and all routes leading to the capital city, Kathmandu, are still blocked, leaving thousands of travellers stranded, The Kathmandu Post newspaper reported.

Tiwari said efforts are underway to clear the obstructed highways to resume transportation.

Kathmandu’s main river, the Bagmati, was flowing above danger levels after incessant rain lashed Large swathes of eastern and central Nepal on Friday and Saturday, a report published by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) said.

“A low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal and the more northerly than usual position of the monsoon trough was the reason” behind the exceptionally intense rain, it said on Saturday.

Scientists say that while climate change is changing the amount and timing of rainfall across Asia, a key reason for the rise in the impact of floods is the built environment, including unplanned construction, especially on floodplains, which leaves insufficient areas for water retention and drainage.

The floods and landslides have thrown life out of gear in many parts of the country, with many highways and road stretches disrupted, hundreds of houses and bridges buried or swept away, and hundreds of families displaced.

Thousands of passengers have been stranded in various places due to road disruption.

17 Indian fishermen arrested by Sri Lanka Navy for alleged illegal fishing

September 30, 2024 by Nasheman

The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 17 Indian fishermen and seized their trawlers for allegedly poaching in its territorial waters, taking the number of Indian nationals apprehended this year by the island nation in such incidents to 413, an official statement said.

The fishermen were arrested, and their two trawlers were seized north of Mannar on Sunday, the Sri Lanka Navy said in a press release.

The navy conducted the “special operation” leading to the apprehension of the Indian fishermen, it said.

The 17 apprehended fishermen were escorted to the Talaimannar Pier and will be handed over to the Mannar Fisheries Inspector for further action, it said.

The Sri Lankan Navy has “held 55 Indian fishing boats and 413 Indian fishermen in island waters thus far in 2024 and handed them over to authorities for legal action,” the statement said.

The fishermen issue is a contentious one in the ties between India and Sri Lanka, with Lankan Navy personnel even firing at Indian fishermen in the Palk Strait and seizing their boats in several alleged incidents of illegally entering Sri Lankan territorial waters.

The Palk Strait, a narrow strip of water separating Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka, is a rich fishing ground for fishermen from both countries.

Fishermen from both countries are arrested frequently for inadvertently trespassing into each other’s waters.

New Delhi: Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty, star of films such as “Mrigayaa”, “Surakshaa”, “Disco Dancer”, and “Dance Dance”, was on Monday named recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the government’s highest recognition in the field of cinema.

The announcement comes months after Chakraborty was awarded Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian honour, by the Government of India.

Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw made the announcement on X.

“Mithun Da’s remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations! Honoured to announce that the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury has decided to award legendary actor, Sh. Mithun Chakraborty Ji for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema,” the minister said in the post.

The award will be presented to Chakraborty at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony on October 8, 2024, Vaishnaw said.

The three-member jury — comprising former Dadasaheb awardee Asha Parekh, actor-politician Khushbu Sundar and filmmaker Vipul Amrutlal Shah — selected Chakraborty for the prestigious honour.

Chakraborty, 74, is very happy, said his son Namashi Chakaborty about the Dadasaheb Phalke Award announcement.

“We all are feeling very proud. He is in Kolkata, I just spoke to him. He is a self-made superstar and a great citizen. This was long, long overdue but I am so proud that he is finally being awarded with this honour,” Namashi told PTI over phone from Los Angeles.

Chakraborty, whose real name is Gourang Chakraborty, is an alumnus of Pune’s Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) who has predominantly worked in Hindi and Bengali cinema.

He made his acting debut with Mrinal Sen’s 1976 film “Mrigayaa”, for which he won his first National Film Award for Best Actor. He earned two more National Awards for 1992’s “Tahader Katha” (best actor) and 1998’s “Swami Vivekananda” (best supporting actor).

Chakraborty shot to stardom with his distinctive dancing style in the 1982 superhit “Disco Dancer”, which is widely credited for ushering in the era of disco dancing in India through chartbusters like “I Am A Disco Dancer” and “Yaad Aa Raha Hai”.

Then followed several hits like “Mujhe Insaaf Chahiye”, “Hum Se Hai Zamana”, “Pasand Apni Apni”, “Ghar Ek Mandir”, “Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki” and “Commando”.

He was also praised for his role in the 1990 film “Agneepath”, fronted by Amitabh Bachchan.

A former Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament, Chakraborty joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the 2021 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election.

Chakraborty also served as the head judge or ‘grandmaster’ on the popular dance reality series “Dance India Dance” from 2009 to 2018.

In 2023, Waheeda Rehman was named recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.

Owaisi criticises Maharashtra government over mosque demolition in Pune

September 30, 2024 by Nasheman

Pune: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has expressed strong opposition to the demolition of a mosque in Pune by the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government. Owaisi questioned the government’s decision, pointing out that while only the mosque is being targeted for demolition, thousands of houses around it are also illegal but remain untouched.

According to Owaisi, the Masjid Darululam Jamia Inamiya in the Thergaon Kaliwadi area of Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune, has existed for over 25 years. He stated that despite the fact that numerous houses in the area are unauthorized, only the mosque has been singled out for demolition. He accused right-wing Hindu organizations of instigating the complaint, leading to the notice for the mosque’s removal.

Owaisi further challenged Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, asking why the demolition was limited to a mosque and did not include other unauthorized structures in the vicinity. He raised concerns over the perceived discrimination and questioned the government’s approach in handling the issue

CM Siddaramaiah promises action on caste census report

September 30, 2024 by Nasheman

Mysuru (Karnataka): Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday promised action on the caste census report, which was submitted seven months ago, after tabling it before the cabinet.

Addressing an event organised by the Alumni Association of Hostels for Backward Classes in Mysuru, Siddaramaiah said the caste census was necessary to identify the backward and deprived communities.

“The system where we come from should be changed. We are trying to bring that change. Our government conducted the social census to recognise and uplift the marginalised sections of society. I lost power (in 2018) and it was not implemented,” Siddaramaiah said.

“Only recently we received the report. I will place it before the cabinet and get it implemented,” the chief minister asserted.

He added that the caste census has long been a “principle” of the Congress party.

“Since 1930, caste-based data has not been gathered as part of the national population census. Now, discussions on conducting caste census are gaining momentum across many states,” Siddaramaiah noted.

The much-awaited Socio-Economic and Education Survey report, popularly known as the “caste census” report, was submitted to Siddaramaiah by Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes Chairman K Jayaprakash Hegde on February 29.

The report has faced objections from certain sections of society and even within the ruling Congress.

Discussing the importance of education, the chief minister on Sunday said that true education must promote scientific thinking and foster responsible individuals.

Siddaramaiah also called upon those who have benefited from government programmes, particularly former students of hostels, to give back to society.

“Many of you have achieved success in your fields. Now, it’s time to extend your support to those in need. Helping the weaker sections of society is the true way to repay the debt we owe to society,” he said.

He warned against the dangers of selfishness, stating that “those who think only of their families become self-centred, and this mentality has contributed to the rise in the number of old-age homes. We must all work together to bring about positive change in our society.”

Siddaramaiah recounted the introduction of student hostels in 1977, a move that played a crucial role in the education of Backward Class students.

“Today, these hostels accommodate 1,87,000 students. Such efforts have ensured that children from underprivileged backgrounds have access to education,” he said.

Former Pak PM Imran Khan booked in new terrorism cases over Rawalpindi protest

Punjab police has registered three new cases against Pakistan’s jailed former prime minister Imran Khan following a protest by his party on his call at Rawalpindi’s Liaquat Bagh area on Saturday.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder was booked on Sunday under the Anti-Terrorism Act along with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur and party chairman Barrister Gohar Khan, The Express Tribune newspaper reported.

The complaints filed by the New Town and Civil Lines police stations of Rawalpindi also included charges of attempted murder, violations of Section 144 and other terrorism-related offences.

According to the charges, the 71-year-old leader incited his supporters to protest against national institutions while issuing directives from Adiala Jail where he has been incarcerated for more than a year.

The Punjab government has also raised allegations against Khan and his supporters, accusing them of criticising national institutions, engaging in vandalism, and inciting violence, including stone-pelting.

Khan’s supporters on Saturday allegedly clashed with police during the protest. Hundreds of PTI supporters tried to reach the historic Liaquat Bagh park in the city for the protest called by Khan, but police erected barricades and blocked all major roads.

protesters were seen attacking the police with stones and bricks and the law-enforcing personnel were seen retreating in haste while being chased by the protesters.

Earlier, Khan had given a call for “peaceful protest”, ahead of which, the provincial government banned public gatherings and closed all major roads leading to the city.

Following the clashes, the party called off the protest to avoid any losses. The General Headquarters of the army is located in Rawalpindi and the venue of the protest was hardly a few kilometers away from the GHQ.

Khan was arrested on August 5 last year after his conviction in the first Toshakhana corruption case filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan. Since then, he has been in jail in different cases.

One killed after TN police gun down suspects in Thrissur ATM heist six detained

One killed after TN police gun down suspects in Thrissur ATM heist, six detained
Police investigate after four-member gang broke open three ATMs run by the State Bank of India (SBI) using a gas-cutter, in Thrissur

Namakkal (Tamil Nadu): The Namakkal police gunned down a man among a gang of seven suspected to have been involved in the ATM heist in Kerala’s Thrissur and detained six of them, when they brazenly attempted to flee after ramming into cars and two wheelers at Kumarapalayam in the district on Friday, a senior police official said.

The car which was used in the robbery was confiscated along with the container truck and an investigation was on to ascertain their role in the ATM heist that took place in the district recently, Salem range DIG E S Uma said.

One of them was injured when police opened fire in self defence. Two police officials who were injured when the container driver and his associate attacked them in a bid to flee, have been admitted to a government hospital with injuries, she said.

“They targeted the ATM of a nationalised bank. As per their modus operandi, the members split into two groups and travelled separately in a container and a car from Haryana to stage the heist,” the DIG told reporters here.

All the members hailed from Haryana, she said, and added that the Namakkal district police arrested two persons from Haryana in a similar heist in the district recently.

Briefing reporters, the senior police official said following information from the Thrissur police, the Namakkal superintendent of police S Rajesh Kannan and other officials organised a vehicle check to identify the car used in the heist.

“Shortly thereafter the Thrissur police alerted us about the movement of a container truck. During the vehicle check, the police signalled a container truck bearing RJ (Rajasthan) registration number to stop but the vehicle went without stopping,” she said.

Upon being chased by the police, the vehicle sped towards the Sanghugiri toll gate but finding it closed, took the Veppadai road to escape. At Sannasiapatti, it indulged in a road rage ramming into a two wheeler, and a car, and dragged a car for about 250 meters, before it was finally intercepted by the police.

“We secured the truck driver and four others found in the cabin. While escorting the vehicle to Veppadai police station, we asked the driver to stop after hearing a loud sound at the rear of the container. The driver identified as Jamal opened the door and two persons stepped out of the container,” the DIG said.

One of them, carrying a blue coloured travel bag containing cash, asked Jamal to escape and tried to run after attacking a police Inspector with a sharp weapon. Jamal too attacked the police official when the latter attempted to nab him.

The police had to open fire on the duo in order to prevent them from escaping. While Jamal died, the man with the money bag was injured in the leg, she said.

“We have secured all five persons and the injured man who has been admitted to a government hospital,” Uma said.

Responding to a question, she said that the police were totally unaware of the presence of a car and two persons inside the container.

The road rage in Sannasiapatti, Kumarapalayam, left the road users in shock. Some of the passers-by pelted stones at the truck in a frantic bid to stop the vehicle.
