Report claims Saudi Crown Prince has no personal concern for ‘Palestinian issue’

Report claims Saudi Crown Prince has no personal concern for 'Palestinian issue'
Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman

Riyadh: US magazine The Atlantic has reported that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman expressed a lack of personal concern for the “Palestinian issue” during a conversation with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in January. The two leaders reportedly discussed the possibility of normalising relations with Israel amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

According to the report, Blinken asked whether Saudi Arabia would tolerate periodic Israeli reentries into Gaza as part of a potential normalisation agreement. The crown prince purportedly responded, “They can come back in six months, a year, but not on the back end of my signing something like this.”

He added, “Seventy percent of my population is younger than me. For most of them, they never really knew much about the Palestinian issue. And so they’re being introduced to it for the first time through this conflict. It’s a huge problem. Do I care personally about the Palestinian issue? I don’t, but my people do, so I need to make sure this is meaningful.”

A Saudi official, however, has described this account of the conversation as “incorrect.”

Despite the new reported comments, Mohammed bin Salman has in the past publicly stated that Saudi Arabia will not normalise relations with Israel without the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

“The Kingdom will not cease its diligent efforts to establish an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital,” he said at a recent annual address before the Shura Council in Riyadh.

“We confirm that Saudi Arabia will not establish diplomatic relations with Israel until that goal is achieved.”

PM Modi rejected Karnataka’s request for GIFT City-like zone: Dy CM DK Shivakumar

PM Modi rejected Karnataka’s request for GIFT City-like zone: Dy CM DK Shivakumar
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar

Bengaluru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar recently alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi refused a proposal made by the Karnataka government to grant a zone like GIFT (Gujarat International Finance Tec) City in the state.

While speaking at the inauguration of the Knowledge, Wellbeing, and Innovation (KWIN) City in Vidhana Soudha on Thursday, DK Shivakumar stated that CM Siddaramaiah and he had appealed to the PM to a grant a GIFT City for Karnataka during their previous visit to Delhi. “He refused, saying that it will not be allowed, and that the existing GIFT City will remain the only financial hub,” the Deputy CM was quoted as saying by Deccan Herald.

GIFT City was established in April 2015 in Gandhinagar. Spread over 886 acres, it hosts global financial institutions, special economic zones and gives 100 percent tax exemption for 10 consecutive years.

DK Shivakumar mentioned that the KWIN City will not be a concrete jungle as it is built with a purpose. He highlighted that it is a sustainable city aimed to enhance the quality of life for its residents.

“Let’s all work together, and create a more vibrant Karnataka, and India will grow stronger, with Karnataka being the base. To make this happen, we have to take KWIN City to level in terms of development,” said Shivakumar, who is also the Bengaluru Development Minister.

Karnataka’s ambitious KWIN City is expected to come between Dobbaspete and Doddaballapura. The key districts of KWIN City are Knowledge, Health, Innovation, and Research. Spread across 5800 acres, it is expected to generate opportunities across sectors like healthcare, biotechnology, Artificial Intelligence, and advanced manufacturing.

KWIN City is designed to accommodate 500,000 residents and would harness half of its water requirements through an advanced rainwater harvesting system, with an additional 20% supplied by borewells. It will also feature a solar farm spanning 465 acres, capable of generating 0.69 million MWh to meet its entire energy requirements.

Gadkari reiterates statement about "multiple" PM offers but refuses to get into details
Union minister Nitin Gadkari

Mumbai: Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday said he had received offers to become prime minister “multiple times” before and after Lok Sabha polls.

Gadkari made the statement at the India Today conclave when asked if he could divulge details about his earlier remark that an opposition party leader had offered support if he was ready to take up the post of PM.

“I have received such an offer multiple times, even before the (Lok Sabha) election and afterwards,” he said.

When the interviewers sought to know if Gadkari had received offers to become PM after the Lok Sabha results in June, the senior BJP leader evaded the query and said he was leaving it to the mediapersons to decipher.

“I will not compromise with my ideology. There was no question of accepting the offer. It is not my aim to become prime minister. I am living my ideology with my conviction,” he asserted.

Man absconding after killing his wife 27 years ago arrested

September 28, 2024 by Nasheman

Tumakuru: A 70-year-old man was arrested for allegedly setting his wife on fire 27 years ago, police said on Friday.

Ningappa had been absconding since 1997 after he was charged in the incident in Nonavinakere police station limits, they said.

“The arrest was made as part of solving long pending cases,” a police official said.

According to police, Nanjappa set his wife ablaze by pouring kerosene on her over domestic issues. She succumbed to injuries in hospital.

He was arrested three days ago when he happened to visit his village.

“It was a long pending case and now we caught him back. He came back to his village and his son started contacting him and through that connection, we caught him. It was a case of domestic violence. While she was admitted in hospital, the woman had given a dying declaration saying her husband had beaten her and poured kerosene on her,” Tumakuru Superintendent of Police Ashok K V told PTI.

“A dying declaration is undeniable and no one can protect the accused in such cases. Initially, it was a case of attempt to murder but after she succumbed to injuries, it was converted into a case of murder,” he said.

Delhi HC asks social media influencer to remove videos with ‘false’ contents against Complan

September 28, 2024 by Nasheman

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has directed the taking down of an allegedly disparaging video against nutritional drink Complan saying social media influencers cannot be reckless and comment on a subject they are not the “master” of.

Justice Saurabh Banerjee observed that Prashant Desai, who has about one million followers on Instagram and over 60,000 followers on Facebook, spoke on the “chemistry” behind Complan despite being “neither a doctor nor a nutritionist nor a dietician” nor anyone connected with the health industry, when Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) guidelines require a user to possess relevant qualifications to publish a health-related post.

The court also restrained the content creator from publishing any matter which denigrates the product and asked him to remove the existing video from all his social media handles within a period of two weeks.

In the video, Desai claimed that Complan, as well as certain other similar products, contain sugar in excess of the daily requirement in children.

Zydus Wellness Products Ltd, in its lawsuit, argued that the video made false as well as unsubstantiated claims and, therefore, sought directions to restrain Desai from infringing upon its trade mark and disparaging Complan and Complan Pista Badam.

Asserting that a social media influencer is entitled to take recourse to Article 19 of the Constitution if he has acted verily, cautiously and within the permissible precincts, the court noted that in the present case, the content creator identified and directly targeted Complan and asked the public to evade it, which cannot be permitted.

The court said a social media influencer is expected not to try to play the role of a professional without any backing to substantiate what is being shared by them.

“In the present scenario, even though the defendant is neither a competitor nor a qualified Doctor/ Nutritionist/ Dietician, however, he has openly named, identified and criticised the plaintiff’s product ‘COMPLAN’ by starting the impugned video on a purely negative note by making unsubstantive and false statements therein.

“The contents/ statements therein are not backed by any substantive basis, even when they were uploaded and even as on date, therefore, the said contents/ statements made by the defendant therein are nothing short of being false, which is writ large,” said the court on September 26 in the judgment passed on Zydus’ plea seeking an interim relief.

“Merely being a ‘social media influencer’, the defendant is not bestowed with the independence to speak and/ or comment about a subject of which he is not the master. In fact, ‘social media influencer’ like the defendant is always expected not to cross over and try to play the role of a professional or try to fall in/ step into the shoes of a teacher or any other professional or act like a preacher, more so without any backing to substantiate what is being talked/ shared,” the court stated.

Desai said he was a well-established social media influencer who created content relating to health and lifestyle, and maintained that his video reflected the truth. There were no falsities in relation to the product of the plaintiff, he added.

Besides being a qualified chartered accountant and certified management accountant, he has also obtained several certifications from different universities on the subject of nutrition and wellness, the court was told.

The court, in the order, said Zydus was an “age old company” which was selling Complan for a long time after obtaining requisite authorisations in accordance with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and other guidelines. The defendant cannot be permitted to “identify” and unauthorisedly reproduce the plaintiff’s product, it added.

“The defendant by uploading the impugned video is questioning all such authorisation(s), permission(s), approval(s), sanction(s) or like obtained by the plaintiff from the Government of India,” it stated, while concluding that the video was “indeed damaging” and “malicious” .

“The defendant’s unauthorised and dishonest use of the plaintiff’s registered mark ‘COMPLAN’ in the impugned video, is/ are detrimental to, the distinctive reputation/ goodwill/ character of the plaintiff’s trademark ‘COMPLAN’ and ‘COMPLAN family marks’, amounting to infringement,” it stated.

The court further said the defendant ought to have been more careful while uploading the video, especially as he was naming the plaintiff’s product.

“A ‘Social Media Influencer’ like the defendant cannot express and/or advocate his ideas/ opinions freely without any substantive basis and/ or backing and/ or is expected to be sensible, prudent, careful, cautious and pragmatic instead of being unwise and reckless, especially in today’s age when media is a powerful tool having an influence over all humanity,” the court said.

Stargazers alert – Comet C/2023 A3: Once-in-a-80,000 year celestial event visible this weekend

September 28, 2024 by Nasheman

Comet C/2023 A3, also known as Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, is making a rare and breathtaking return to Earth’s skies after an astonishing 80,000-year journey around the Sun. From Friday through Monday, early risers will have the unique opportunity to catch a glimpse of this celestial wonder in the early morning sky.

According to BBC Sky at Night Magazine, Comet C/2023 A3 completes its orbit every 80,000 years, making this an extraordinarily rare event for stargazers. The comet is expected to become a prominent object in the morning sky by late September 2024, shining brightly at a magnitude of +0.6 just before sunrise. The comet will reach its closest point to the Sun, known as perihelion, on September 28, 2024. As it ascends into the evening sky around October 10, observers can anticipate slightly dimmer views, with the comet predicted to shine at a magnitude of +0.8.

NASA astronaut Matthew Dominick, currently stationed aboard the International Space Station, shared a mesmerizing video of the comet on social media. In his post, he described the comet as appearing like “a fuzzy star” when viewed with the naked eye from the ISS’s cupola windows. However, using a 200mm f/2 lens with a 1/8s exposure, Dominick captured more detailed images, showcasing the comet’s potential for stunning visuals as it draws closer to the Sun.

Amateur astronomer Stuart Atkinson from Cumbria also provided insights into what viewers can expect. He noted on social media that the comet would resemble “a fuzzy star with a misty tail” positioned low in the eastern sky beneath the Moon. Atkinson suggested that using binoculars could enhance the viewing experience, offering a more detailed look at this once-in-a-lifetime celestial event.

Don’t miss the chance to witness this extraordinary astronomical phenomenon as Comet C/2023 A3 graces our skies for the first time in millennia.

My fight won’t end till I give father party he founded symbol: NCP(SP) leader Supriya Sule

September 28, 2024 by Nasheman

My fight won't end till I give father party he founded, symbol: NCP(SP) leader Supriya Sule
Nationalist Congress Party (SP) leader Supriya Sule

Mumbai: Nationalist Congress Party (SP) leader Supriya Sule on Friday said her fight will not end till she gives her father Sharad Pawar the party he founded and its original symbol.

The Sharad Pawar-founded NCP split in July last year after Ajit Pawar and eight MLAs joined the Eknath Shinde government. The ECI later gave the party name and ‘clock’ symbol to the faction led by the deputy chief minister, while Sharad Pawar’s faction was christened NCP (SP) with ‘man blowing tutari’ as its symbol.

Addressing a Maha Vikas Aghadi rally in Anushakti Nagar in north east Mumbai, Sule said, “My fight will not end until I give Pawar saheb the party he created and his symbol.”

She also took a swipe at the ruling alliance by saying “what happened to those who had an allergy to Nawab Malik”. Malik is the sitting MLA from Anushakti Nagar and has thrown his weight with the faction led by Ajit Pawar.

Malik was arrested in February 2022 by the Enforcement Directorate for allegedly usurping a property in Kurla here with the help of fugitive gangster Dawood Ibrahim’s sister. Malik was released on bail last year.

Expressing disappointment with Malik moving towards the ruling alliance, Sule said, “I feel sorry when I see Nawab bhai with the BJP. The same party that put you in jail, you have joined hands with them?”

The Ajit Pawar-led NCP, BJP and the Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena comprise the ruling alliance in Maharashtra.

Sule stressed the (undivided) NCP gave Malik full support when he was jailed, during his court hearings and when he was hospitalised for various ailments.

“I have seen the tears of Nawab bhai’s wife and his children. Nawab bhai may have forgotten the injustice meted out to him by the BJP but I have not,” the Baramati Lok Sabha MP asserted.

Sule said allegations of irregularities to the tune of Rs 100 crore were made against former state home minister and party colleague Anil Deshmukh but the FIR mentioned only Rs 1 crore.

He, however, spent seven months in jail, leaving his kin in immense distress, Sule told the gathering.

Sule also expressed gratitude to Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and his wife Dimple Yadav for supporting her when the party split and the symbol was given to the breakaway faction.

Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi and Congress Rajya Sabha MP Chandrakant Handore also addressed the gathering.

Canadian MP blasts petition seeking fresh inquiry into 1985 Kanishka bombing

Canadian MP blasts petition seeking fresh inquiry into 1985 Kanishka bombing
Canadian MP Chandra Arya

Ottawa: A prominent Canadian MP of Indian origin has criticised a petition seeking a fresh inquiry into the bombing of Air India Flight 182 of 1985 to determine the involvement of any “foreign intelligence”, alleging that it promotes “conspiracy theories” of Khalistani extremists.

The Montreal-New Delhi Air India ‘Kanishka’ Flight 182 exploded 45 minutes before it was to have landed at London’s Heathrow Airport on June 23, 1985, killing all 329 people on board, most of them Canadians of Indian descent.

The bombing was blamed on Sikh extremist militants in retaliation to ‘Operation Bluestar’ to flush out militants from the Golden Temple in 1984.

Addressing the Parliament on Thursday, Chandra Arya, a Member of Parliament from Nepean in the House of Commons, noted that two Canadian public inquiries found Khalistan extremists responsible for the bombing of Air India flight.

Calling the bombing the “largest mass killing” in Canadian history, Arya said, “Even today, the ideology responsible for this terrorist attack is still alive among (a) few people in Canada.”

“Two Canadian public inquiries found Khalistan extremists responsible for the bombing of the Air India flight. Now there is a petition on (the) parliament portal asking for a new enquiry promoting conspiracy theories promoted by Khalistan extremists,” he said.

Quoting Bal Gupta, whose wife was killed in this attack, Arya said,” It’s deeply frustrating. It opens up old wounds all over again. It’s all garbage. It’s an attempt to gain publicity and support for terrorist activities.”

The petition calls for the Canadian government to order a fresh inquiry into the Kanishka bombing to determine whether any “foreign intelligence was involved” in it.

Last year, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged a “potential” involvement of Indian agents in Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar’s killing.

New Delhi rejected Trudeau’s charges as “absurd”.

India has been maintaining that the main issue between the two countries is that of Canada giving space to pro-Khalistan elements operating from Canadian soil with impunity.

Nijjar, who was declared a terrorist by India, was shot dead outside a gurdwara in British Columbia on June 18 last year. The murder is being probed by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

Another Mpox case reported in Kerala

September 28, 2024 by Nasheman

The Kerala health department on Friday said another Mpox case was reported in the state and urged those who have symptoms to seek treatment.

The southern state had reported the country’s first confirmed case of the new strain earlier this week.

A high-level evaluation meeting was held on Friday to evaluate the situation, the state health department said.

State Health Minister Veena George said the contact list of the patient has been prepared and the preventive measures have been taken.

The minister urged everyone who reached the state from abroad to approach the health department in case of any symptoms and seek treatment.

“Isolation facilities have been arranged in all the districts,” the minister said in a statement.

On September 23, the health department had announced plans to release revised guidelines for the prevention and treatment of Mpox.

George had said that instructions were issued to take necessary action if the number of cases increases.

Official sources in New Delhi had earlier said that India had reported the first case of the Mpox strain in a patient from Kerala who tested positive.

They had said that the Clade 1b strain was detected in a 38-year-old man from Malappuram district who had recently returned from the United Arab Emirates.

Since the WHO’s 2022 declaration of Mpox as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, 30 cases have been reported in India.

Mpox infections are generally self-limiting, lasting between two and four weeks, and patients usually recover with supportive medical care and management.

It is transmitted through prolonged and close contact with an infected patient.

Mpox typically manifests itself with fever, rash and swollen lymph nodes and may lead to a range of medical complications.

Kamindu Mendis equals Bradman as Sri Lanka command New Zealand in Galle test

Kamindu Mendis equals Bradman as Sri Lanka command New Zealand in Galle test
Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis

Galle (Sri Lanka): Kamindu Mendis matched Don Bradman as the joint third fastest player to 1,000 test runs as Sri Lanka tightened its grip on New Zealand in the second test on Friday.

Sri Lanka declared at 602-5 in its first innings and left New Zealand reeling at 22-2 by stumps. With three full days left to play, the Kiwis face a mountainous challenge to avoid a second defeat.

Kamindu reached the 1,000-run milestone in just his 13th test innings, sharing the honor with Bradman, who achieved the feat in 1930 against England at Headingley. Only England’s Herbert Sutcliffe and West Indies great Everton Weekes reached the landmark in fewer innings, doing so in 12 knocks.

In a career that has blossomed rapidly, Kamindu notched his fifth century before lunch. and second century in two tests. Later, with audacious flair, he brought up his 1,000th run by stepping down the track to Rachin Ravindra and smashing a towering six straight back over the bowler’s head.

This remarkable achievement made him not only the fastest Sri Lankan but also the quickest Asian to the milestone, surpassing the likes of Sri Lanka great Roy Dias (23 innings) and India’s Vinod Kambli (14).

The crowd’s celebrations were bittersweet, however, as Sri Lanka declared before Kamindu could reach his maiden double century. He was unbeaten on 182 off 250 balls, an innings laced with 16 boundaries and four massive sixes.

“Kamindu Mendis has been sensational for us this year,” teammate Angelo Mathews said. “He is doing stuff that none of us were able to do early in our careers. He is very matured, knows his game and plays very positively.

Even in the first test, we were under tremendous pressure after a collapse and he rescued us with a hundred. In the second test, the pitch was not doing much, but his concentration was amazing. He just kept on batting. It was a terrific knock.

“Kamindu has made runs everywhere. He was player of the series in Bangladesh this year when wickets weren’t the easiest to bat on. Then, when we went to England, it was seaming all over and he batted so beautifully. Then again, here, on turning tracks he has looked a class apart.”

Kamindu found strong support from Kusal Mendis, who shrugged off recent struggles to post an undefeated 106, his 10th test century.

Demoted to No. 7 in the order after disappointing performances, Kusal responded with a measured innings, combining with Kamindu for an unbroken 200-run partnership, the highest sixth-wicket stand for Sri Lanka against New Zealand on home soil. This partnership also set a record as the highest sixth-wicket stand in Galle, by any team, further cementing Sri Lanka’s dominance.

Earlier in the day, the hosts lost Mathews (88) and skipper Dhananjaya de Silva (44) in the morning session, but Kamindu’s relentless march, paired with Kusal’s defiance, ensured Sri Lanka remained firmly in the driver’s seat, with thoughts of a 2-0 series sweep looming large.

New Zealand, meanwhile, missed crucial chances again to rein in Sri Lanka. Daryl Mitchell dropped Kamindu on 26 and Tom Blundell fluffing a straightforward stumping when he was on 113.

The misery continued for the Kiwis when Sri Lanka struck early in their innings.

Asitha Fernando set the tone, dismissing Tom Latham in the very first over with a sharp catch at gully. Prabath Jayasuriya then removed the other opener Devon Conway, snapped up at slip by De Silva on 9.

“It’s a tough ask for us now,” New Zealand’s Luke Ronchi said. “The important thing is to play each ball, build partnerships and see through sessions. We have done it before in tough conditions. We need to take the game as deep as possible.”
