kidnapped and murdered an 11-year-old boy boy at Sultanpur, police said on Wednesday.

The accused, Asif alias Sonu, demanded a ransom of Rs 5,00,000 for releasing Osama alias Sahil to repay his debts, Kotwali police station SHO Naradmuni Singh said.

“The incident took place in the Gandhinagar locality of Sultanpur. The victim’s father, Mohd Shakeel, said his son went missing on Monday night after he left to attend a wedding procession. Despite searches, there was no trace of the child,” the SHO said.

On Wednesday morning, Osama’s body with strangulation marks was found at the residence of the accused whom the police arrested, he said.

Asif, who lives in the same neighbourhood as the victim, exploited the trust built between the two families to carry out the crime, the officer said.

The killing of the minor boy has triggered outrage in the area with the residents demanding stringent punishment for the accused.

The victim’s family has called for death penalty for Asif.

Pune: The Maharashtra excise department on Sunday cancelled the permit for serving alcohol at actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh’s concert in the Kothrud area of Pune later in the evening, an official said.

The department cancelled the permit after people from different quarters, including Kothrud’s newly elected BJP MLA Chandrakant Patil, objected to plans to serve liquor at the programme.

State excise commissioner C Rajput said, “The state excise department has cancelled the permission to serve liquor during the programme.”

MLA Patil raised an objection against the concert scheduled at Kakade Farm in Kothrud later in the evening.

The BJP leader, in a statement, said, “Such shows are not part of the city’s culture. This will create a major disturbance for residents of the area. The event will also cause traffic jams. Hence, I have urged the city police commissioner to cancel the programme.”

Indore: Some online fraudsters got their target and timing horribly wrong on Sunday after they attempted to “digitally arrest” a senior police official with an automated call over “credit card misuse” while he was addressing a press conference in Indore in Madhya Pradesh.

“The caller informed that I had misused my credit card and as a result a case had been registered with Andheri West police station in Mumbai. I was having a press briefing at the time. I was told my bank account would be blocked and was asked to visit the police station in two hours,” Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) of Indore crime branch Rajesh Dandotia

The official said he told the caller he would not be able to make it to Mumbai from Indore at such short notice.

“The caller told me he would be connect me to someone from the police station. He then connected me to another person, who asked me to wait. He said he would talk to his senior officer to see if my statement could be recorded via video call. When he saw me in police uniform, he immediately disconnected the video call,” the official narrated.

Dandotia said he asked media persons to record a video so that people can be made aware of such cyber crimes and digital arrest.

Digital arrest is a modus operandi of cyber criminals who threaten a person with arrest, force the person to remain confined in a room while keeping him or her under electronic surveillance and then extort money on the pretext of “clearing” him or her of charges.

Amritsar: A bomb-like object was found outside the Ajnala police station near Amritsar on Sunday, police said.

Police sealed the area and pressed a bomb disposal squad into service immediately after getting the information, which sent the object for further investigation, officials said.

Deputy Superintendent of Police, Gurwinder Singh, said it would be too early to say anything on the matter, adding that an investigation was underway.

Thane: Police have registered a case against a 29-year-old woman in Maharashtra’s Thane city for allegedly abetting her husband’s suicide and recording a video of the act instead of stopping him, an official said on Sunday.

The couple, residing in Wagle Estate area here, used to have frequent quarrels over various issues.

On the night of November 20, the man, also aged 29, ended his life by hanging himself from a ceiling fan at his house, the official from Wagle Estate police station said.

His wife allegedly failed to prevent him from taking the extreme step and instead recorded his act on her mobile phone, he said.

After being informed about the incident, the police sent the body for postmortem to a government hospital here.

Based on a complaint by the man’s mother, the police on Friday registered a case against his wife under sections 105 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 108 (abetment of suicide) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the official said.

A probe was on into the case, the police added.
