Pushpa bows down to no one, but will do so for you: Allu Arjun to fans at ‘Pushpa 2’ trailer launch

November 18, 2024 by Nasheman

New Delhi: Telugu star Allu Arjun, who launched the trailer of his upcoming film “Pushpa 2: The Rule” in Patna on Sunday, expressed gratitude to fans for showering their love on him by turning up in huge numbers for the event.

“Pushpa 2” is directed by Sukumar and also stars Rashmika Mandanna and Fahadh Faasil.

The trailer of the much-awaited sequel to 2021’s “Pushpa: The Rise” was unveiled at the jam-packed Gandhi Maidan in the Bihar capital. Also present at the event was Rashmika, who plays Srivalli to Arjun’s gangster Pushpa Raj.

It was Arjun’s first visit to Bihar.

“I am grateful to all of you for your love and warm welcome,” he said at the event.

“Pushpa kabhi jhukega nahin, lekin aaj pehli baar, aapke pyaar ke liye jhukega (Pushpa will never bow down in front of anyone, but for the first time, he will bow down only for your love)” the National Award winner said in reference to his popular dialogue from the 2021 original film.

“Thank you Patna, you have given me a lot of love,” Arjun said as he asked the audience to forgive him for his “thoda galat” (poor) Hindi speaking skills.

A stampede-like situation erupted at the venue before the trailer launch began following which police resorted to a mild lathicharge to control the crowd.

Videos of a section of spectators from the same event hurling slippers towards the stage also started circulating on social media on Sunday evening.

Produced by Mythri Movie Makers and Sukumar Writings with music on T-Series, “Pushpa 2” will be released on December 5.

Fit KL Rahul set to open in Perth; Rohit Sharma to miss first Test as Bumrah handed captaincy

November 18, 2024 by Nasheman

Perth: KL Rahul allayed concerns surrounding his fitness with an extended net session here on Sunday, indicating his readiness to open in the first Test against Australia as skipper Rohit Sharma will join the team only in Adelaide after spending time with his new-born baby.

Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah will lead the team in Rohit’s absence.

Rahul had left the field for medical attention on Friday after sustaining a blow on his elbow by pacer Prasidh Krishna while batting in an intra-squad practice match at the WACA ground.

The first of the five Tests in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy will begin at the Optus Stadium from November 22, while the second Test at Adelaide starts from December 6.

In all likelihood, the team management will pair Rahul with Yashasvi Jaiswal, and the 32-year-old’s recovery has come as a massive relief after Shubman Gill was ruled out of the first Test with a fractured thumb.

Rahul batted without any major discomfort for a considerable time and participated in all the drills during the three-hour net session on this day.

“I had got a bad hit on Day 1 of the game. I am feeling good today, getting ready for the first game. Happy that I could come here early and get used to the conditions,” Rahul said in a video shared by BCCI on X.

“Yeah, I got a lot of time to prepare for this series and I am excited and looking forward to it,” he added.

In fact, head coach Gautam Gambhir too had indicated a promotion up the order for Rahul during the pre-departure press meet in Mumbai in the event of Rohit missing the opening Test.

Team Physio Kamlesh Jain said Rahul has responded well to the treatment.

“The key for us was to ensure that there is no fracture there. It’s 48 hours since the impact and he has responded well to treatments. He should be ready to go,” said Jain in the video.

Yogesh Parmar, the support physio, said the treatment was based on “controlling the pain.”

“I took him for X-ray and scan and based upon the report I was more confident that he should be fine.

“It was a matter of controlling the pain and giving him some confidence. From a medical point of view, he is absolutely fine,” said Parmar.

The Indian team, meanwhile, finished its block of training at the WACA ground and the visitors will now move to the Optus Stadium for match drills from Tuesday, after a scheduled rest day on Monday.

Devdutt, 3 pacers to stay back in Australia

Meanwhile, the Indian team management has decided to keep top-order batter Devdutt Padikkal in Australia as a batting back-up along with three seamers from the India A squad.

Devdutt was part of the India A squad that played two four-day matches against their Australian counterparts recently.

The left-hander, who was recently named in Karnataka’s squad for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, had lukewarm outings during the ‘A’ tour, making 36, 88, 26, 1.

The three pacers are: Mukesh Kumar, Khaleel Ahmed and Navdeep Saini, who were all part of the India A squad.

Saini had also played at Sydney and Brisbane Tests during the last tour Down Under, till date his only two matches in the traditional format.

“It is more to do with the familiarity with the Australian conditions as they have played here recently,” a source close to the development told PTI.

“Devdutt was highly impressive while facing Jasprit Bumrah at nets, and the management took that also into consideration,” the source added.

The 24-year-old had made his Test debut against England earlier this year at Dharamsala and made a 65 while batting at No. 4

Congress’ guarantees implemented in Karnataka amid BJP’s false propaganda: DK Shivakumar

November 18, 2024 by Nasheman

Latur: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar on Sunday accused the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of spreading disinformation in Maharashtra, asserting that his party has implemented all its poll guarantees in the southern state.

Addressing a press conference, he expressed confidence that the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), comprising the Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP (SP), will win the November 20 assembly elections and give Maharashtra a better government.

He said the Congress government in Karnataka has implemented its five key guarantees, including Rs 3,000 monthly assistance to homemakers, loan waivers up to Rs 3 lakh for farmers, Rs 25 lakh health insurance per family, Rs 4,000 monthly allowance for unemployed youth, and free bus travel for women.

The funds are being directly credited to women’s bank accounts, said the Congress leader.

“The skyrocketing inflation has burdened citizens immensely,” said Shivakumar, and slammed the BJP over the collapse of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s statue in Sindhudurg district in August.

“They even misused funds for this. As a citizen, I feel ashamed,” he said.

He also accused the BJP of not fulfilling its earlier promises, including a railway coach factory in Latur that was supposed to create 50,000 jobs.

“Not a single coach has been produced, nor has anyone gained employment,” he said, alleging that the BJP and PM Modi are running a disinformation campaign.

The Karnataka deputy CM predicted that MVA would win over 175 of the state’s 288 assembly seats and appealed to people to elect late CM Vilasrao Deshmukh’s sons Amit Deshmukh and Dhiraj Deshmukh in Latur City and Latur Rural constituencies, respectively.

He also released the ‘Latur Report’, detailing sitting MLA Amit Deshmukh’s contributions to the constituency from 2019 to 2024.

BJP has nominated Archana Patil Chakurkar, daughter-in-law of former Union home minister Shivraj Patil, and Ramesh Kashiram Karad in Latur City and Latur Rural seats, respectively.

Kharge likens BJP and RSS to poison; says ‘poisonous snake should be killed’

November 18, 2024 by Nasheman

Pune: Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday likened the BJP and RSS to “poison” and termed them as “politically most dangerous” in India.

Addressing a rally in Sangli on the penultimate day before the campaigning for the Maharashtra assembly polls concluded, Kharge used the “killing the poisonous snake” analogy in his speech.

“If there is anything which is politically the most dangerous in India is the BJP and RSS. They are like poison. If a snake bites, the person (who is bitten) dies…such a poisonous snake should be killed,” said Kharge.

He targeted Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath over the death of 10 newborns in a fire at a medical college.

Without naming Vishal Patil, the Congress rebel and Independent MP from Sangli, Kharge accused him of betraying the party and supporting his sister-in-law, who is contesting as an Independent nominee in the November 20 assembly elections.

In a dig at BJP, Kharge said the number of leaders who campaigned in Maharashtra polls outnumbered the number of candidates of the saffron party in the fray.

“The Prime Minister, Home Minister (Amit Shah) and other leaders have come here. Today, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath was also here. No idea what happened to him. In UP, in a fire at a hospital in Jhansi, 10 kids died. Despite that, his rallies in Maharashtra didn’t stop,” the Congress president said.

Kharge took potshots at PM Narendra Modi for holding rallies for state-level elections.

This is an election for assembly and not to elect the prime minister of the country, he said, adding that his (Modi’s) “thirst for authority” is unsatiated.

He slammed Modi for not visiting strife-torn Manipur and instead travelling abroad.

“Modi was here till yesterday. Today he is abroad. Manipur is burning, people are dying, adivasi women are disrespected, and women are raped but Modi never visited Manipur. He is on foreign tours. Today he is also visiting a country. I want to tell him first to look after your home. Make the country strong first. You can go anywhere later,” Kharge added.

He questioned the output of Modi’s meetings with Donald Trump, Pakistan’s prime minister, and presidents of Russia and China from India’s perspective.

The 83-year-old leader said his age didn’t stop him from supporting the Congress’ ideology and meeting people.

“There are leaders who were given positions by the party and benefited. We are not criticising anyone but if the Congress party is giving you everything, you should not betray it,” said Kharge in an apparent dig at Vishal Patil.

Kharge said the Congress didn’t want any rift in the family of (former chief minister) late Vasantdada Patil, who hailed from Sangli.

“I was told that the Lok Sabha MP from Sangli (Vishal Patil) won with the support of Congress party and Congress party has re-inducted him with respect,” he said.

Kharge said he respects the woman candidate who is contesting as an Independent because of her association with Congress.

“I had promised and told Ramesh Chennithala (Maharashtra Congress incharge) that we will offer whatever she wants after the elections. We sent Chennithala and KC Venugopal to talk to them as we did not want any rift in Vasantdada Patil’s house and Sangli,” he added.

Kharge said his assurances, however, didn’t work.

Jayashree Patil, from former chief minister Vasantdada Patil’s family, has entered the fray as an independent candidate from Sangli against Congress nominee Prithviraj Patil.

“It is difficult to wake up those people who are pretending to sleep,” Kharge added.

Man dives into dam water for reel shooting, missing

November 18, 2024 by Nasheman

Guna (MP): A 20-year-old man went missing when he jumped into the water in a dam for the shooting of a social media reel in Madhya Pradesh’s Guna district on Sunday, police said.

The incident occurred around 5 pm at Gopisagar Dam in Ruthiyai area, some 20 km from the district headquarters, an official said.

Dharnawada police station in-charge Prabhat Katare said Deepesh Lodha handed over his mobile phone to his friend Raj to shoot a reel as he dived into the water near the sluice gate of the reservoir, he said.

Lodha also told his friend that he knew swimming, the police official said.

However, the young man started drowning, prompting his friend to seek the help of the people in the vicinity, the official said.

After being alerted, police informed the State Disaster Emergency Response Force (SDERF), which launched a search to trace Lodha, the official said.

Phool Singh Banjara, a farmer, said his children alerted him that someone was in trouble in the dam. By the time he reached, Lodha was drowning and soon went missing, he said.

Bangladesh will seek extradition of Sheikh Hasina says interim govt chief Muhammad Yunus

November 18, 2024 by Nasheman

Dhaka: Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus said on Sunday that the interim government will seek the extradition of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India after the fall of her government following a mass protest movement in August.

In an address to the nation on the completion of 100 days of the interim government, Yunus also said that his government has been continuing its all-out efforts to ensure the security of all citizens, including religious minorities.

“We must ensure justice in every killing…We will also ask India to send back fallen autocrat Sheikh Hasina,” Yunus was quoted as saying by the state-run BSS news agency.

His remarks indicate a U-turn as in an interview with the UK-based Financial Times newspaper last month, Yunus said his government would not immediately seek Hasina’s extradition from India.

Yunus, who assumed office on August 8, claimed that about 1500 people, including students and workers, were killed while 19,931 others were wounded during the protest against the Hasina government.

“Our government is very careful to collect information on every death,” he said, adding that the government made arrangements for treatment of the injured in various specialized hospitals, including 13 hospitals in Dhaka.

Hasina, 77, resigned and fled to India following massive protests by students and others against her government over a controversial quota system in government jobs.

She landed at the Hindon airbase near Delhi on August 5. She was believed to have been shifted later to an unspecified location and has not been seen in public since then.

Hasina and her party leaders face accusations of ordering brutal suppression of the Anti-Discrimination Students Movement, resulting in numerous casualties during the July-August protests.

Yunus said his government is investigating every incident in a few cases where religious minorities were subjected to violence.

“We have tried our best so that any citizen of the country, not only Hindu community members, doesn’t become a victim of violence. We will continue these efforts,” he said in his address to the nation.

He said Bangladesh was a completely insecure country when the interim government assumed office.

Yunus said an attempt was made to spread unnecessary fear among the religious minorities.

“In some cases, they have also been subjected to violence. But all the hype about it was completely exaggerated. Those little cases of violence that took place were mainly political,” he said.

But ill efforts were made to make the country unstable again by giving religious colour to these events, he said, adding that the government dealt with the situation firmly with the cooperation of all.

He said that after two months of assumption of office by his government, Durga Puja was celebrated in around 32,000 puja mandaps across the country.

He said the government took extensive security preparations during the Durga Puja so that the Hindu community members celebrate the festival smoothly.

Hindus constitute just about 8 per cent of the 170 million Bangladesh population. The minority Hindu community members have faced regular vandalism of their businesses and destruction of temples during and since the protest erupted, resulting in the ouster of Prime Minister Hasina.

Yunus also said that the Election Commission (EC) will be formed soon while an election roadmap will be announced after competing reforms in the electoral system.

“Once the electoral reforms are decided, you will get the election roadmap very soon,” he said.

Noting that there is a question in everyone’s mind about when the elections will be held, Yunus said the government has started taking necessary steps to hold the elections.

NITI Aayog’s MMR blueprint a ploy to separate Mumbai from Maharashtra: Uddhav Thackeray

November 18, 2024 by Nasheman

Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday alleged that the NITI Aayog’s blueprint to develop the metropolitan region was a ploy to separate Mumbai from Maharashtra by undermining the BMC’s importance.

If voted to power, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) will scrap the MoU signed between the World Economic Forum (WEF) and MMRDA as it is aimed at diminishing the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s importance, he said.

Addressing a rally at the BKC ground in Mumbai on the penultimate day before the campaigning for the assembly elections concluded, Thackeray said he wouldn’t hesitate to disband the MMRDA (Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority) if it encroaches on the BMC’s jurisdiction.

“A conspiracy to separate Mumbai from Maharashtra is not just a loose talk but an impending serious crisis. The ploy is real but we will never allow this to happen,” he said.

Thackeray said the MMRDA and WEF signed an agreement in September to develop MMR (Mumbai Metropolitan Region) as a global economic hub which was signed after Niti Aayog’s report on MMR development.

“The Niti Aayog’s blueprint diminishes the importance of the Mumbai civic body which is a ploy to separate Mumbai from Maharashtra,” he alleged.

Thackeray said the first decision of the MVA government will be to scrap policies of the (Mahayuti) government which handed over Mumbai’s land to the Adani group.

The former chief minister said he was “not anti-development but is anti-destruction”.

Thackeray claimed the MVA government headed by him was toppled (in June 2022) and Shiv Sena split because he had not allowed the looting of Maharashtra.

In an apparent reference to the Shiv Sena MLAs’ disqualification case in the Supreme Court, saying, “The courts haven’t given me justice. I seek justice from you for the sake of Maharashtra”.

Thackeray said the BJP had to construct the statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who had banned RSS, in Gujarat and seek votes in Maharashtra in Balasaheb Thackeray’s name, which he said was “revenge of time”.

Attacking PM Narendra Modi over the “Ek hai to Safe Hai” slogan, Thackeray said if people feel unsafe while Modi is at the helm then he should resign.

“Only corrupt and traitors feel safe when Modi is around,” he alleged.

Thackeray said Maharashtra was facing a grave crisis as “airports, ports, electricity, mines, and schools are being handed over to Adani”.

Urging people to support the MVA, Thackeray said Maharashtra will be destroyed if the Mahayuti returns to power.

Thackeray recalled Shiv Sena’s support for the abrogation of Article 370 and Bal Thackeray sheltering Kashmiri pandits fleeing persecution.

“Amit Shah and Narendra Modi weren’t known to the world at that time,” he said.

Targeting the BJP over its poll campaign, he said the scrapping of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir doesn’t impact Minimum Support Price, unemployment, and women’s security in Maharashtra.

He said people of Gujarat should realise that Modi and Amit Shah have created a barrier between the western state and the rest of the country.

“How can they move projects from Maharashtra to Gujarat? You should stop them,” he added.

Israeli strikes kill 12 in Gaza as arrests made over flares fired at Netanyahu’s home

November 18, 2024 by Nasheman

Tel Aviv,: Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip overnight killed 12 people, Palestinian medical officials said on Sunday.

Israeli police meanwhile arrested three suspects after flares were fired at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s private residence in the coastal city of Caesarea.

In Lebanon, Israeli warplanes pounded the southern suburbs of Beirut after the military warned people to evacuate from several buildings.

The Hezbollah group has a strong presence in the area, known as the Dahiyeh, and the strikes came as Lebanese officials are considering a United States-brokered cease-fire proposal. One of the strikes hit central Beirut for the first time in weeks.

Netanyahu and his family were not at the residence when two flares were fired at it overnight, and there were no injuries, authorities said. A drone launched by Hezbollah struck the residence last month, also when Netanyahu and his family were away.

The police did not provide details about the suspects behind the flares, but officials pointed to domestic political critics of Netanyahu. Israel’s largely ceremonial president, Isaac Herzog, condemned the incident and warned against “an escalation of the violence in the public sphere”.

Netanyahu has faced months of mass protests over his handling of the hostage crisis unleashed by Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack into Israel, which ignited the ongoing war in Gaza.

Critics blame Netanyahu for the security and intelligence failures that allowed the attack to happen and for not reaching a deal with Hamas to release scores of hostages still held inside Gaza. Israelis rallied again in the city of Tel Aviv on Saturday night to demand a cease-fire deal to return them.

Overnight strikes in central Gaza kill 12

Israeli strikes killed six people in Nuseirat and another four in Bureij, two built-up refugee camps in central Gaza dating back to the 1948 war surrounding Israel’s creation.

Another two people were killed in a strike on Gaza’s main north-south highway, according to the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in the central city of Deir al-Balah, which received all 12 bodies.

The war between Israel and Hamas began after Palestinian Hamas group stormed into Israel on October 7, 2023, killing about 1,200 people — mostly civilians — and abducting 250 others. Around 100 hostages are still inside Gaza, about a third of them believed to be dead.

The Health Ministry in Gaza says around 43,800 Palestinians have been killed in the war. The ministry does not distinguish between civilians and combatants but has said women and children make up more than half the fatalities. Around 90 per cent of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million Palestinians have been displaced, and large areas of the territory have been flattened by Israeli bombardment and ground operations.

Women’s Asian Champions Trophy: Deepika stars again as India cruise to semis with 3-0 win over Japan

Women’s Asian Champions Trophy: Deepika stars again as India cruise to semis with 3-0 win over Japan

Rajgir (Bihar) Defending champions India stormed into the semifinals of the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy with an unbeaten record, defeating Japan 3-0 here on Sunday.

Continuing her stellar form, star striker Deepika netted a quickfire brace from penalty corners in the final quarter to seal the victory, following vice-captain Navneet Kaur’s opener in the 37th minute.

With this win, India topped the league stage with maximum 15 points from five matches, ahead of Olympic silver medallists China (12 points).

India will take on fourth-placed Japan in the semifinal on Tuesday, while China will play third-placed Malaysia in the other last-four game.

Deepika, the tournament’s leading scorer, now boasts 10 goals, including four field goals, five penalty corners, and one penalty stroke, underscoring her dominance.

In the day’s other matches, Malaysia beat Thailand 2-0, while China defeated South Korea by an identical margin.

The Indians secured their first scoring chance in the form of back-to-back penalty corners in the eighth minute but Deepika’s flick from the second effort was brilliantly saved by Japanese goalkeeper Yu Kudo.

India earned another penalty corner in the 13th minute but yet again wasted the chance.

The Indians continued to dominate and secured their fourth penalty corner in the 25th minute but once again Kudo rose to the occasion and made three brilliant saves to deny the hosts.

A minute after the change of ends, Kudo again came to Japan’s rescue to deny Deepika.

India eventually broke the deadlock in the 37th minute through Navneet’s brilliant reverse hit to the second post.

Deepika’s brilliance

The Indians continued their domination and earned three back-to-back penalty corrners in the 47th minute and star dragflicker Deepika finally found the back of the net with a powerful low dragflick to open her account.

A minute later, the Indians secured another set piece and this time too Deepika struck again with a powerful flick into the top right corner, effectively sealing the match.

Credit must also go to the Indian defence, led brilliantly by Udita and Sushila Chanu, as they didn’t let the Japanese take a single shot at the Indian goal.

Skipper Salima Tete, Neha and Sharmila Devi too were brilliant in the midfield, creating numerous chances for the forwardline with their runs and neat dribbling skills.

Nurse’s heroic efforts helped save over dozen babies

November 18, 2024 by Nasheman

Lucknow/Jhansi (UP): Nurse Megha James was on duty when the fire broke out at the Jhansi hospital and she threw herself headlong into the rescue efforts, playing a hero’s role by saving several babies.

Even when her salwar got burned, she refused to give up and was able to evacuate 14-15 babies with others’ help.

“I had gone to take a syringe to give an injection to a child. When I came back, I saw that the (oxygen) concentrator had caught fire. I called the ward boy, who came with the fire extinguisher and tried to put it out. But by then, the fire had spread,” James said.

Ten babies perished in a fire that broke out at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College in Jhansi Friday night.

Faced with an enormous blaze, James’s mind worked with a frenetic speed, to the extent she cared little about burning herself.

“My chappal caught fire and I burned my foot. Then my salwar caught fire. I removed my salwar and discarded it. At that time, my mind was virtually not working,” she told PTI Videos.

James just wore another salwar and went back to the rescue operation.

“There was a lot of smoke, and once the lights went out, we could not see anything. The entire staff brought out at least 14-15 children. There were 11 beds in the ward with 23-24 babies,” she said.

Had the lights not gone out they could have saved more children, James said. “It all happened very suddenly. None of us had expected it.”

Assistant Nursing Superintendent Nalini Sood praised James’s valour and recounted bits from how the rescue operation was carried out.

“The hospital staff broke the glasses of the NICU ward to evacuate the babies. It was then Nurse Megha’s salwar caught fire. Instead of caring for her safety, she stayed there to rescue the babies and handed them over to people outside,” she said.

Sood said James is currently undergoing treatment at the same medical college. She said she did not know the extent of her burns.

“The rescued babies were shifted to a ward very close to the NICU ward… When I recall the scene, I feel like crying,” she said.

Dr Anshul Jain, the head of the anaesthesiology department at the medical college, explained the standard rescue operation and claimed the hospital followed the protocol to the T.

“In the triage process during an ICU evacuation, the policy is to evacuate less-affected patients first. The rationale behind this approach is that patients requiring minimal support can be relocated quickly, enabling a larger number of evacuations to be completed in a shorter time.

“In contrast, patients on ventilators or requiring high oxygen support demand more time and resources for evacuation,” he said.

“This principle was successfully implemented in Jhansi, playing a significant role in saving many lives,” Jain said.

A newborn rescued from the fire died due to illness on Sunday, Jhansi District Magistrate Avinash Kumar said.
