Gulmarg terror attack: Two soldiers succumb to injuries, toll rises to four

October 25, 2024 by Nasheman

Srinagar: Two soldiers who were critically wounded in Thursday’s terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Gulmarg succumbed to their injuries, raising the death toll in the ambush to four.

Two Army porters died on Thursday while another porter and a soldier were injured.

Terrorists attacked a vehicle of the force six kilometres from tourist hotspot Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, officials said on Thursday.

They had said the terrorists opened fire on the Army vehicle in the Bota Pathri area in the evening when it was headed for the Nagin post in the Afrawat range.

Confirming the deaths of the two porters, the officials had said the condition of two of the injured soldiers was critical.

They had said the soldiers in the vehicle opened retaliatory fire when they came under attack.

The area is completely dominated by the Army and there were reports recently that a terrorist group had infiltrated during early summer and taken shelter in the higher reaches of the Afrawat range, they said.

The Bota Pathri area was recently opened to tourists.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the recent spate of attacks in the Valley was a matter of serious concern.

“Very unfortunate news about the attack on the Army vehicles in the Bota Pathri area of north Kashmir, which has resulted in some casualties and injuries. This recent spate of attacks in Kashmir is a matter of serious concern,” he said in a post on X.

“I condemn this attack in the strongest possible terms and send my condolences to the loved ones of the people who lost their lives. I also pray that the injured make a complete and swift recovery,” he added.

Former chief minister and People’s Democratic Party supremo Mehbooba Mufti also condemned the attack.

The BJP’s Jammu and Kashmir president Ravinder Raina, meanwhile, condemned the attack and blamed Pakistan for trying to destabilise peace and tranquillity in the Union Territory.

The attack came amid a spike in terror incidents in the Valley.

In another deadly attack on Sunday, six non-local labourers and a local doctor were killed when terrorists fired indiscriminately upon them at the Z-Morh tunnel construction site in the Gagangir area of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.

Before that, a labourer from Bihar was shot dead by terrorists in Shopian district on October 18.

Earlier on Thursday, terrorists shot at and injured a labourer from Uttar Pradesh in the Tral area of Pulwama district.

Zimbabwe sets multiple records in T20I against Gambia

Nairobi: In a remarkable display of cricketing prowess, Zimbabwe shattered several records during their T20 World Cup 2026 qualifier match against Gambia on Wednesday.

Highest T20I total ever

Zimbabwe posted a staggering 344/4 in 20 overs, setting a new world record for the highest total in a T20I, surpassing Nepal’s 314/3 against Mongolia at the Asian Games in 2023. Sikandar Raza led the charge with an unbeaten 133 from just 43 balls. Contributions from Brian Bennett (50 off 26), Tadiwanashe Marumani (62 off 19), and Clive Madande (53* off 17) bolstered Zimbabwe’s innings.

Sikandar Raza’s milestone achievements

Raza’s explosive innings included 7 fours and 15 sixes, making him Zimbabwe’s first T20I centurion. His 133* also marked the joint-second-fastest century in T20Is. With 118 of his runs coming through boundaries, Raza broke his own record for most sixes in a T20I innings by a Zimbabwean and surpassed Virat Kohli’s record for the most ‘Man of the Match’ awards in T20Is, with 17 accolades.

Record-breaking victory margin

Zimbabwe bowled out Gambia for a mere 54 runs, securing a historic 290-run victory, the largest margin of victory in a T20I match.

Most boundaries in a T20I innings

The Zimbabwean batsmen smashed 30 fours and 27 sixes, totalling 57 boundaries, the highest in any T20I innings. The 27 sixes also set a new record for the most hit by a team in a T20I.

Gambia’s unwanted records

Gambia’s bowlers faced the brunt of Zimbabwe’s onslaught, with Musa Jobarteh conceding 93 runs in four overs, the most by a bowler in a T20I innings. Additionally, five Gambia bowlers each conceded 50 or more runs, another unwanted T20I record.

Kejriwal to campaign for INDIA bloc parties in Maharashtra, Jharkhand: AAP sources

Kejriwal to campaign for INDIA bloc parties in Maharashtra, Jharkhand: AAP sources

New Delhi (PTI): AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal will campaign for INDIA bloc parties in the assembly elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, party sources said on Thursday.

Kejriwal will particularly campaign for Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) partners — the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) and Sharad Pawar’s NCP-SP — in Maharashtra, the sources said.

AAP is a constituent of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), which was formed before the Lok Sabha polls.

Sources in AAP claimed that the party was contacted by the Shiv Sena (UBT) and the NCP-SP for campaigning by Kejriwal in Maharashtra.

In Jharkhand, the former Delhi chief minister will campaign for the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha. The campaign schedule will be announced later, they said.

AAP entered into an alliance with the Congress — the largest constituent of the INDIA bloc — in Delhi, Gujarat and Haryana for the Lok Sabha polls. However, it went without an alliance in Punjab.

It also contested the recent assembly elections in Haryana independently.

The Congress is also a constituent of the MVA in Maharashtra and a part of the ruling alliance in Jharkhand. Assembly elections in the two states are due in November.

Exchange of seats likely among MVA allies Sanjay Raut

Exchange of seats likely among MVA allies: Sanjay Raut
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut

Mumbai: Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Thursday indicated the Maha Vikas Aghadi allies could swap some seats among themselves, a day after the opposition bloc in Maharashtra announced a formula of 85 seats to each of the three major parties.

Raut also said there could be “some corrections” in the list of candidates announced by his party on Wednesday.

After days of stalemate, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), comprising Congress, NCP (SP) and Shiv Sena (UBT), on Wednesday announced contesting 85 seats each for polls to the 288-member state assembly even as deliberations to seal a final pact were still underway.

The three allies were discussing the sharing of the remaining 33 seats among themselves and smaller parties.

The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) on Wednesday released its first list of 65 candidates for the state assembly polls.

“There can be an exchange of seats,” Raut on Thursday said, stressing merit and winnability will be the key factors in selecting a candidate.

“There can be switching of seats in one or two places. In some places, candidates have to be changed at the last minute. I don’t think anything drastic can happen beyond this,” Raut said.

But the three parties have agreed to 85-85-85 (formula), he said, adding the decision on rest of the seats will be taken by Thursday evening.

The Rajya Sabha member also indicated his party could contest 100 seats.

“We have come close to scoring a century. We will hit two-three sixers. We scored 85 and the match is still on. We will score the remaining runs,” Raut said drawing a parallel with a cricket match.

The state assembly elections are scheduled on November 20 and votes will be counted on November 23.

Bombay High Court denies anticipatory bail to father in fatal Pune drunk driving Porsche case

Bombay High Court denies anticipatory bail to father in fatal Pune drunk driving Porsche case

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Wednesday rejected the anticipatory bail plea of a man accused of tampering with evidence to shield his son, a minor, involved in a fatal accident in May.

Justice Manish Pitale, while delivering the order, observed that prima facie evidence supported the charges against the applicant. The case involves a high-end car accident in Kalyaninagar on May 19, which claimed the lives of two motorbike-borne IT professionals, including a woman. The applicant’s son, allegedly intoxicated and seated in the rear of the vehicle driven by a teenage friend, is under investigation.

The prosecution alleges that the parents of the minor driver bribed doctors to swap his blood sample with that of his mother. The applicant is accused of similarly conspiring with doctors at Sassoon General Hospital to replace his son’s blood sample, with the intention of obstructing the investigation.

The police informed the court that while other accused in the case had been arrested, the applicant had remained absconding. The high court noted that his absence hindered the investigation and pointed to the deliberate tampering of evidence.

Senior counsel Aabad Ponda, representing the applicant, argued that at most, his client could be charged under Section 201 of the IPC (causing disappearance of evidence), which is a bailable offense. However, public prosecutor Shishir Hiray opposed the plea, highlighting that the sessions court had rightly dismissed the bail request on September 9.

The court concluded that the applicant’s involvement in the manipulation of blood samples warranted the rejection of his bail plea, reinforcing the need for a thorough investigation.
