Cubbon Reads Secret Santa event disrupted by Cubbon Park authorities over permission issues

Cubbon Reads' Secret Santa event disrupted by Cubbon Park authorities over permission issues

Bengaluru: The ‘Secret Santa’ event organised by the silent reading group Cubbon Reads in Bengaluru’s Cubbon Park was abruptly halted on Saturday afternoon after park authorities confiscated a large number of books and detained event curators. The disruption occurred when the event attracted a significantly larger crowd than the organisers had anticipated.

The Secret Santa event involved attendees bringing wrapped books, which were then randomly re-distributed based on a numbered chit. Following the confiscation, the group took to social media to express their frustration, saying, “We really hope they give the books back as it was merely a gift… we were not doing it for any commercial reason.”

While the authorities claim that over 1,000 people attended, the group maintains that the turnout was around 500, acknowledging that they had not expected such a big turnout.

Kusuma G, Deputy Director of Horticulture at Cubbon Park, told Deccan Herald that any gathering of more than 20 people at the park requires prior permission from the department, which Cubbon Reads had not obtained. She explained that to hold events, a fee of Rs 30,000 and a security deposit of Rs 20,000 are required, regardless of whether the event is free or non-commercial. She further clarified that while events like marathons, walkathons, yoga sessions, and book readings are permitted, religious activities are not allowed in the park.

In a another statement, Cubbon Reads alleged that the curators were detained for two hours and had to contact senior officials to leave along with the confiscated books. The group claimed they were also required to write an apology letter. They accused Cubbon Park authorities of threatening their curators’ careers and demeaning those who did not speak Kannada. Additionally, the group was allegedly threatened with an FIR and a fine of Rs 35,000.

One of the event curators told DH that they were asked to unwrap a book, as the authorities suspected it contained unlawful things. The curator suggested that the issue seemed to stem from a broader discomfort with young people, rather than the event itself.

Another curator claimed that the authorities’ tone and behaviour changed after a lawyer intervened and contacted a top-level officer. The confiscated books were eventually returned.

Passengers on board Air India flight from Copenhagen to Delhi fight over armrest space

December 23, 2024 by Nasheman

Two passengers on board a Delhi-bound Air India flight from Copenhagen (Denmark) came to blows over armrest space just when the aircraft was about to land at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Sunday, a source said.

The flight landed at around 7.35 am.

An Air India official said that the passengers had an argument over some issue at its Copenhagen-Delhi flight of Saturday which was later sorted out “amicably”.

According to the source, “The two passengers started an argument over the armrest space in economy class when the cabin crew was serving food and beverages, which turned into a heated exchange. The cabin crew pacified them by giving one of the passengers another seat.

“However, when the aircraft was about to land in Delhi, the passenger came to collect his baggage from the seat he was sitting earlier, they again started the fight and came to blows.”

The number of passengers on board the Boeing 787-8 aircraft, operating AI 158 (Copenhagen-Delhi) could not be known.

The source, however, said that the flight was almost full.

When contacted, an Air India official said, “There was an argument between the two passengers over some issue but it was resolved amicably. They even shook hands before leaving the airport.”

Jyotirmath Shankaracharya slams RSS chief for ‘politically convenient’ position on restoring temples

Jyotirmath Shankaracharya slams RSS chief for 'politically convenient' position on restoring temples
Shankaracharya of the Jyotirmath Peeth in Uttarakhand Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati

Haridwar: Shankaracharya of the Jyotirmath Peeth in Uttarakhand Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati on Sunday criticised RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat for his “politically convenient” position on restoring temples.

Avimukteshwaranand said a list of temples destroyed in the past by invaders be prepared and archaeological surveys of the structures be carried out to “restore Hindu pride”.

“When he wanted power, he went around speaking about temples. Now that he has power, he is advising not to look for temples,” he said on Bhagwat’s remarks.

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Bhagwat recently said that it was not acceptable that new temple-mosque disputes are raked up after the construction of Ram temple in Ayodhya.

The seer said a lot of atrocities have been committed against the Hindus and their religious places have been destroyed in the past. “If now, the Hindu society wants to restore and preserve its temples, then what is wrong in it?”

The Shankaracharya also criticised Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement on BR Ambedkar in Parliament that has triggered a huge row between the ruling BJP and the Opposition.

Defending Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Avimukteshwaranand said the scuffle outside Parliament was due to Shah’s remarks on Ambedkar.

He said that there are a lot of people who support Ambedkar’s ideology so everyone is using his name for their politics.

Shah has been under fire from several opposition parties since Tuesday over a comment he made referring to Ambedkar during a debate on the Constitution in the Rajya Sabha.

The next day, the BJP leader held a press conference and accused Congress of twisting facts and distorting his comments.

The seer also condemned alleged atrocities on Hindus in Bangladesh and said that the central government should take strict action on the matter. He said that illegal immigrants from Bangladesh living in India should be sent back. He slammed the central government accusing it of lack of action on the matter.

Bhagwat has recently expressed concern over the resurgence of new temple-mosque disputes and asserted that certain individuals, after the construction of Ayodhya’s Ram Temple, seem to believe they can become “leaders of Hindus” by raking up such issues.

CT Ravi warns of ‘Belagavi Chalo Movement if inaction on attempted murder complaint

CT Ravi warns of 'Belagavi Chalo Movement' if inaction on attempted murder complaint
Former Karnataka Minister and BJP MLC CT Ravi

Chikkamagaluru: Former Karnataka Minister and BJP MLC CT Ravi has accused the state Congress government of selective justice and threatened to launch a “Belagavi Chalo” movement if no action is taken against those who allegedly attempted to assassinate him.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Ravi alleged that the state government, led by Congress, operates on the “Hammurabi doctrine” rather than adhering to the Constitution. He criticized the swift police response to a complaint filed against him by Minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar while claiming inaction on his own complaint regarding an alleged assassination attempt.

“Does the CM believe I don’t have the right to seek justice under the law? Should I also send goons to get justice?” Ravi questioned. He demanded a judicial investigation into the incident to uncover the truth.

Ravi alleged that he was detained and taken to “mysterious places” by Karnataka State Police, who acted on instructions from undisclosed sources. “I told them to record the calls they received during this operation,” he added.

He stated his intent to pursue legal recourse, file complaints with the Human Rights Commission, and ensure those involved in the alleged murder attempt are held accountable. “An FIR has not been filed yet on my complaint. If action isn’t taken, we will launch the Belagavi Chalo movement,” Ravi warned.

Union Minister HDK announces Rs15,000 cr revival plan for Bhadravati Visvesvaraya Iron & Steel Factory

Union Min. HDK announces Rs15,000 cr revival plan for Bhadravati Visvesvaraya Iron & Steel Factory
Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, H D Kumaraswamy

Mandya (Karnataka): Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, H D Kumaraswamy, announced on Sunday plans to revive the Sir M Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Factory in Bhadravati with an estimated investment of Rs 15,000 crore.

Speaking at the 87th All India Kannada Literary Conference in Mandya, the Minister stated that this decision aligns with the Modi government’s efforts to address unemployment and focus on industrial growth in Karnataka.

The Minister highlighted the historical significance of the Bhadravati factory, established under Mysuru Maharaja Nalvadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar and Bharat Ratna Sir M Visvesvaraya. Once a source of employment for thousands and a livelihood for lakhs, Kumaraswamy expressed confidence that the glorious days of the steel factory would soon return. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has entrusted me with the critical responsibilities of the Heavy Industries and Steel portfolios. I am working diligently to ensure these responsibilities benefit Karnataka,” said Kumaraswamy.

Responding to MLA Dinesh Gooligowda’s request to establish an IIT near KRS in Mandya, the Minister assured that the proposal would be examined thoroughly. “I will discuss this matter with the relevant Union Ministers. Karnataka already has one IIT, and I strongly believe we need another. Let us all work together to bring another IIT to our state, and I seek everyone’s support for this,” he added.

The Minister emphasised his deep connection with Mandya, calling it a land of Kannadigas, and expressed his happiness in participating in the conference. “I am here not just as a Union Minister but as a proud Kannadiga,” he said.

Kumaraswamy addressed the concerns raised by the conference’s president, Go Ru Channabasappa, about promoting Kannada and implementing bilingual education policies over trilingual ones. He acknowledged the challenges faced by rural parents in balancing the preservation of Kannada with their children’s future aspirations in a competitive global environment. “This is a complex issue, and we must collectively find solutions to address the anxieties of parents,” he said.

The Minister also expressed his concern over the declining interest in Kannada-medium education due to societal pressures and the competitive mindset of rural parents. Reflecting on his tenure as Chief Minister, he said, “When I served as Chief Minister, I initiated the establishment of 1,000 public schools to equip rural children to compete with their urban counterparts while emphasising Kannada in education.”

Sharing his passion for literature, Kumaraswamy said, “I was deeply moved after reading the epic novel ‘Durgastamana’ by Ta Ra Subba Rao. “It’s a masterpiece that vividly narrates the end of Madakari Nayaka, evoking emotions that can move even the most unyielding souls.”

He also expressed admiration for the works of Vyasaray Ballal, including novels like ‘Channabhairadevi’ by Gajanana Sharma, ‘Swapna Saraswata’ by Gopalakrishna Pai, and ‘Swatantryada Ota’ by Bolwar Mohammed Kunhi, which have inspired him deeply.

Reflecting on the evolution of Kannada cinema, Kumaraswamy said, “As someone from the Kannada film industry, I have noticed a stark difference between the stories of the past and the present. It saddens me to see some films failing to address societal concerns. We need more films with good values, meaningful stories, and a positive impact on society.”

He reminisced about legendary songs like Dr Rajkumar’s ‘Haalina Holeyo… Jenina Maleyo’, which has left a lasting impression on him. He called for films that preserve the essence of relationships, foster peace, and revive the cultural harmony of rural Karnataka. “We need to bring back the days when communities dined together and celebrated unity,” he said.

Wishing a long life to conference president Go Ru Channabasappa, Kumaraswamy said, “May he live beyond 100 years, as foretold by astrologers. He is like a father figure to me, and his life continues to inspire us all. Let us hope his wisdom and guidance remain with us for many more years.”

The Minister concluded his address with a heartfelt appeal to preserve the Kannada language, culture, and unity, reiterating his commitment to Karnataka’s development and welfare.

Allu Arjun didn’t leave theatre despite being told about woman’s death: Hyderabad police

Allu Arjun didn't leave theatre despite being told about woman's death: Hyderabad police

Hyderabad: Top Telugu actor Allu Arjun did not leave the theatre during the screening of ‘Pushpa-2’ on December 4 despite being told to do so in view of a stampede in which a woman died, police officials claimed on on Sunday.

Speaking at a press conference on the annual round-up of 2024, city police commissioner C V Anand showed a video, made by police, on the situation that prevailed when the stampede occurred.

The video was made by collating footage, including from news channels and cell phone clips. It suggests the actor remained in the theatre till the midnight.

Anand did not make any comment on the video, but said the media can draw its own conclusions.

A police official talked about the sequence of events on the fateful night of December 4.

He said that he and other police officials informed a manager of Allu Arjun about the death of the woman and told him that the situation was out of control. He indicated that they were not allowed to meet the actor.

Allu Arjun’s staff members told them that they would convey the matter to the actor but did not do so, he said.

The official said he later managed to reach the actor, told him about the woman’s death and asked him to leave the theatre so that the fans don’t harm each other while trying to catch a glimpse of him.

The official also told the actor that security arrangements would be made for his exit.

However, the actor said he would go only after watching the film, the police official said.

Later, accompanied by a senior officer, the official went inside and brought the actor out, he said.

Amid allegations that bouncers hired by Allu Arjun pushed crowds as well as policemen when the stampede occurred at the cinema hall, the police commissioner warned that stringent action as per law would be taken if THE bouncers indeed misbehaved with the police on duty.

The VIPs would be made responsible for the behaviour of the bouncers hired by them, he said.

Asked if the police would appeal against the interim bail granted to Allu Arjun, the commissioner refused to give a direct response, just saying it is part of the investigation.

What course of action is taken would be known in the days to come, he said.

He also declined to comment when asked if the family of the deceased told him about Allu Arjun’s team or film production team allegedly threatening them not to speak on the issue.

Meanwhile, state Cinematography Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy found fault with Allu Arjun responding on Saturday to the debate in the Legislative Assembly.

The minister, who observed that the actor should have respect for the government and the chief minister, demanded an apology from Allu Arjun to the government and the CM.

“This government is never vindictive. As Cinematography Minister, we allowed benefit shows and hiking ticket prices to promote the film industry,” he said.

However, Union Minister of State for Home Bandi Sanjay Kumar found fault with CM Revanth Reddy for his comments on Allu Arjun in the Assembly on Saturday.

The comments of the CM sounded like character assassination of Allu Arjun and hurting the Telugu film industry, he alleged in a statement.

Later in the day, Sanjay Kumar visited a boy who is undergoing treatment in a hospital after being injured in the stampede.

“Consoled his father over the heartbreaking loss of his wife, Revathi. I pray to god that Sritej recovers at the earliest. Assured support to the family in this difficult time,” Kumar said on X.

Earlier in the day, state DGP Jitender told reporters in Karimnagar district that film personalities and all others should understand that safety and security of citizens is utmost important, and also conduct themselves accordingly.

BJP has always insulted Dalits: Cong leader Ajoy Kumar

BJP has always insulted Dalits: Cong leader Ajoy Kumar
Ajoy Kumar

Jamshedpur (Jharkhand): Amid ongoing protests over Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s remarks on B R Ambedkar, senior Congress leader Ajoy Kumar alleged that the BJP, which “adheres to the principles of Manusmriti”, has always “insulted” Dalits.

The AICC executive committee member, in a statement issued here on Sunday, said that the “true character of the BJP, which practices Manusmriti, was exposed” with Shah’s comments in the Rajya Sabha.

“BJP leaders’ mindset has always been anti-Dalit, which often gets reflected in their statements intentionally or unintentionally,” Kumar alleged.

Shah’s remark on Ambedkar was not only an ‘insult to him but also to crores of Dalits of the country who consider him God”, Kumar, the AICC in-charge of Odisha, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, claimed. The Congress leader alleged that the “BJP was against caste-based census because of its anti-Dalit approach”.

“This was not the first time when the BJP’s anti-Dalit character came to the fore… there are many past instances,” Kumar, who lost to BJP’s Purnima Das Sahu in Jamshedpur East seat in the recent Jharkhand assembly elections, claimed

“It was Mahatma Gandhi and Nehru’s Congress which has always given respect to Dalits,” Kumar said.

He demanded that Shah apologise publicly to the nation.

During a debate on the Constitution in the Rajya Sabha last week, Shah had said, “Abhi ek fashion ho gaya hai – Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar. Itna naam agar Bhagwan ka lete to saat janmon tak swarg mil jata (It has become a fashion to say Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar. If they had taken God’s name so many times, they would have attained heaven for seven lifetimes).”

On Wednesday, Shah held a press conference in which he accused the Congress of twisting facts and distorting his comments in the Rajya Sabha.

Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha witnessed constant protests from treasury benches and opposition members over the alleged insult of Ambedkar until both the houses were adjourned sine die on Friday.
