Vote for those who have done real development in Delhi and not made false promises: Kharge

Vote for those who have done real development in Delhi and not made false promises: Kharge
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge

New Delhi: As voting began for the Delhi Assembly polls, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday urged people to vote for those who have done real development in Delhi and not duped people by making false promises.

He asserted that those who want to remain in power by “pretending to fight” for people do not deserve their votes.

“I appeal to the respected people of Delhi to cast their valuable vote. Your one vote will prove to be a symbol of change in Delhi. If Delhi has to be taken forward on the path of development like before, then choose those people who have done real development in Delhi and not duped you by making false promises,” Kharge said in a post in Hindi on X.

“Those who have not taken even a single step for solving the issues of broken roads, dirty water, garbage and polluted air and only made excuses, you should think before pressing the button on the EVM that how much they care about you,” the Congress leader said in his appeal to voters.

“Those who only want to remain in power by pretending to fight for people are not truly deserving of your vote,” he added.

Kharge said Delhi’s brotherhood, harmony, prosperity, happiness and inclusive development are paramount.

He also called on the youth, especially first-time voters to exercise their franchise.

Voting began for the Delhi Assembly elections at 7:00 am. While the ruling AAP is eyeing a third straight term, banking on its governance record and welfare schemes, the BJP and the Congress are looking for a resurgence.

There are around 1.56 crore eligible voters in the capital.

Polling is underway at 13,766 stations across Delhi’s 70 assembly constituencies to decide the fate of 699 candidates.

US plane carrying 205 deported Indians to land in Amritsar on Wednesday afternoon

US plane carrying 205 deported Indians to land in Amritsar on Wednesday afternoon

Amritsar: A US military aircraft carrying around 200 illegal Indian immigrants is likely to land at the Shri Guru Ramdas Ji International Airport here on Wednesday afternoon.

Earlier, the aircraft was expected to land in the morning. So far, details of those on the plane are not available.

According to reports, the US military plane C-17 is carrying 205 illegal immigrants hailing from Punjab and neighbouring states.

Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said on Tuesday that the state government would receive the immigrants and set up counters at the airport.

Punjab NRI Affairs Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal on Tuesday expressed disappointment over the US government’s decision and said these individuals, who contributed to that country’s economy, should have been granted permanent residency instead of being deported.

He said many Indians entered the US on work permits which later expired, making them illegal immigrants.

The minister said he plans to meet External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar next week to discuss the concerns and interests of Punjabis living in the US.

Dhaliwal had also appealed to Punjabis not to travel abroad through illegal means, emphasising the importance of acquiring skills and education to access opportunities worldwide.

He encouraged people to research legal ways, acquire education and language skills before travelling abroad.

After Donald Trump assumed office as the US President last month, the country’s law enforcement agencies have launched a crackdown against illegal immigrants.

Many people from Punjab, who entered the US through “donkey routes” or other illegal means by spending lakhs of rupees, are now facing deportation.

Raut claims 2,000 deaths in Kumbh stampede; sparks row in Rajya Sabha

Raut claims 2,000 deaths in Kumbh stampede; sparks row in Rajya Sabha
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut

New Delhi (PTI): Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut on Tuesday triggered an uproar in the Rajya Sabha by claiming that “2,000 people died” in the January 29 Maha Kumbh stampede, prompting Deputy Chairman Harivansh to ask him to authenticate the figure.

During the debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address, Raut questioned the official death toll of 30 in the stampede.

“When the stampede happened 4-5 days back, it was told (that) it was not stampede but a rumour…30 people died. Whether the figure is true? Don’t hide it… We are responsible even if one person died…The figures that we have seen with our eyes is 2,000 people were dead,” he said.

The Shiv Sena leader blamed “poor management” for the tragedy, terming the Kumbh a “political event for political marketing”.

He said that in other countries, such an incident would have led to demands for the resignation of the prime minister and chief minister.

As treasury bench members protested, the Deputy Chairman told Raut, “If you mention any figure, you have to substantiate”.

The MP agreed to authenticate the figure by evening.

Raut’s remarks came a day after Congress President and Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge referred to “thousands” of deaths in the stampede, leading to protests in the Upper House. The chairman had asked Kharge to retract his statement.

During his speech, Raut also alleged that “all pillars of democracy have been destroyed”, and the government was preoccupied with elections.

“Unless from the Prime Minister to central ministries do not come out of the whirlpool of elections, the country will not progress,” he noted.

BJP member Anil Sukhdeorao Bonde hit back at the Opposition, questioning why similar concerns were not raised about casualties in Ajmer.

The debate also saw Congress MP Phulo Devi Netam raising development issues in Chhattisgarh, while TMC’s Prakash Chik Baraik sought recognition of ‘sarna dharma code’ for tribals in the census.

Maha Kumbh stampede: Supreme Court refuses to hear PIL asks petitioner to move Allahabad HC

February 4, 2025 by Nasheman

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday refused to hear a PIL for specific guidelines to ensure safety of devotees attending the Maha Kumbh, where at least 30 people were killed and 60 injured in a pre-dawn stampede at Sangam area in Prayagraj.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar noted the submission of the Uttar Pradesh government that a plea was already filed in the Allahabad High Court on the issue and the present petition should be not examined in the apex court.

Terming it “an unfortunate incident”, the top court asked the petitioner advocate Vishal Tiwari to move the Allahabad High Court.

“This is an unfortunate incident. But, you go to the Allahabad High Court,” the bench told Tiwari.

The top court noted the submissions of senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the UP government, that a judicial inquiry was initiated.

The PIL was filed in the top court on January 30, a day after the incident in the stampede in Prayagraj.

The incident took place on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya, one of the most auspicious days of the Hindu calendar.

The petition, filed a day later under Article 32 of the Constitution by Tiwari, sought guidelines to prevent stampede incidents and protect the fundamental rights of equality and life under Article 21.

Nine countries pledge to enforce arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

February 4, 2025 by Nasheman

New Delhi: Nine nations have pledged to take action against Israel, including upholding The Hague’s arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, as part of efforts to end Israel’s occupation of Palestine and address its operations in Gaza.

Organized under the ‘Hague Group,’ the countries—Belize, Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, Honduras, Malaysia, Namibia, Senegal, and South Africa—announced their commitment on January 31. They also vowed to prevent the supply of arms and munitions to Israel where there is a clear risk they may be used to violate international law, and to block vessels carrying military fuel or weapons to Israel from docking at their ports.

The group cited violations of international humanitarian law, human rights law, and the prohibition of genocide in Palestine as the basis for their stance. Their decision was influenced by Israel’s disregard for rulings by international courts, including the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and the International Criminal Court (ICC).

South Africa, one of the member countries, previously brought a case before the ICJ alleging Israel’s genocide in Gaza, a case expected to take years to conclude.

“The Hague Group’s formation sends a clear message: no nation is above the law, and no crime will go unanswered,” said South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola.

Progressive International (PI), the organization convening the group’s meeting, called for renewed international efforts to hold Israel accountable for its actions. PI also quoted Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, stating that Israel’s violations of international law extend beyond the persecution of Palestinians and threaten the very foundations of global law.

Supreme Court dismisses plea alleging misuse of women-centric laws

February 4, 2025 by Nasheman

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a plea challenging certain provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act and alleging misuse of women-centric laws.

“You can go and raise all these grounds in Parliament,” a bench of Justices B R Gavai and K Vinod Chandran told the counsel appearing for the petitioner.

The petitioner’s counsel said they were seeking to challenge certain provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, including sections 2 and 3.

While section 2 of the Act deals with definition of dowry, section 3 pertains to penalty for giving or taking dowry.

The counsel said the petitioner was concerned about these laws which adversely impacts men.

The public interest litigation (PIL) names laws like the Dowry Prohibition Act, the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, and the provision on cruelty to women in the erstwhile Indian Penal Code to question their validity.

The plea filed by petitioner Rupshi Singh highlighted the alleged malice in law, the unreasonableness contained in the impugned provisions and the lack of semblance of law in the provisions.

The petitioner was seeking protection of men against the atrocities committed by women filing false complaints, abusing the very laws that were meant to protect them from harm.

The PIL submitted that the Dowry Prohibition Act was discriminatory on the grounds of religion and further assailed the provisions of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 as being women-centric and discriminatory against men.

Not concerned about rupee value RBI managing volatility: Finance Secretary

February 4, 2025 by Nasheman

New Delhi: Amid rupee falling to a record low level of 87.29 to a dollar, Finance Secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey on Monday said there is no concern over rupee value and the Reserve Bank of India is managing the volatility of the local currency.

“There is no concern about the value of the rupee. The volatility in rupee is being managed by the RBI,” Pandey told reporters.

He said the Indian rupee is “free-float” and no control or fixed rate is applicable on the currency.

He said the exchange rate is facing pressure amid unabated foreign fund outflows.

The rupee depreciated 67 paise to hit record low of 87.29 against the US dollar in early trade on Monday after Trump Tariffs on Canada Mexico and China triggered fears of a broad trade war.

Donald Trump slapped Canada and Mexico with 25 percent duties and China with a 10 percent duty, The move was the first strike in what could usher a destructive global trade war, forex traders said.

In 2025, the Indian rupee depreciated 1.8 percent from the 85.61 to a dollar level on December 31, 2014.

The rupee continued to face pressure due to sustained foreign fund outflows and the broad strength of the American currency in the overseas markets due to unabated dollar demand from oil importers and weak risk appetite.
