London: Jasprit Bumrah’s five-wicket haul and Joe Root’s sublime century set up an absorbing contest before KL Rahul’s composed unbeaten 53 guided India to 145 for three at stumps on day two of the third Test against England at Lord’s on Friday.

At stumps, India trailed by 242 runs with Rahul and Rishabh Pant (19 batting) at the crease.

Bumrah (5/74) dismantled England’s middle and lower order to claim his second successive five-wicket haul and 15th overall, as the hosts were bowled out for 387 after resuming the day on 251/4.

Root anchored the innings with a composed 104 off 199 balls — his 37th Test century — while No 9 Brydon Carse (56) and keeper-batter Jamie Smith (51) staged a crucial lower-order fightback as the last three England partnership was worth 84 runs.

In reply, India started brightly but lost Yashasvi Jaiswal (13) early with Jofra Archer’s dismissing him in the third ball of his Test comeback after nearly four years.

Rahul held firm with a patient unbeaten 53 (113 balls) adding 61 runs with Karun Nair, who made 40 before falling to a spectacular diving catch by Root at slip — his record 211th in Tests, surpassing Rahul Dravid’s 210 for the most catches by a fielder in men’s Tests.

Captain Shubman Gill (16) fell just two runs short of overtaking Dravid’s record for most runs by an India batter (602) in a Test series in England.

A defensive push off Chris Woakes found the edge, with Smith standing close taking a sharp catch behind the stumps in a key moment of the match.

The five-match series is tied one-all after India bounced back to win the second Test at Edgbaston by 336 runs.

FSDA suspends 133 drug licences cancels 20 in Karnataka in June

Bengaluru: Enforcement officers of the Karnataka Food Safety and Drug Administration department have suspended 133 drug licences and cancelled 20 drug licences in June for violations of the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, officials have said.

The move was initiated after the officials concerned conducted 2,544 inspections over the last month, they said.

According to the department, drug-testing laboratories in Bengaluru, Hubballi and Ballari analysed 1,333 samples in June. Among those, 1,292 samples were declared as “Standard Quality” and 41 as “Not of Standard Quality”.

From April to June, the enforcement officers filed a total of 81 cases in courts against firms that violated the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and the Rules thereunder, the department said.

The department has ensured that “Not of Standard Quality” drugs worth more than Rs 40 lakh were recalled from the market and seized.

A special drive was conducted across the blood centres in the state and a total of 122 such centres were inspected.”Based on the various violations observed, show-cause notices were issued to 44 blood centres and compliance letters were issued to 80 blood centres,” the department said in a statement issued on Friday.

According to the statement, in compliance with the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, food safety, quality and hygiene aspects were inspected across the state, covering 1,557 street-food vendors, in June.

Notices were issued to 406 establishments where violations were identified and fines totalling Rs 44,500 were imposed on the spot, the statement added.

4-storey building collapses in Delhi some people feared trapped

New Delhi: A four-storey building collapsed in the Welcome area of northeast Delhi on Saturday morning, and some people could be trapped under the rubble, police said.

Three people were pulled out from the rubble and rushed to a hospital as multiple agencies continued a rescue operation, they said.

“Some more people could be trapped under the rubble,” a senior police officer said.

“We received a call regarding a building collapse at 7 am. Multiple teams are working, including seven fire tenders. Further information is awaited,” the officer said.

The building collapsed when locals were out on their morning walks, many of whom acted as first responders and began trying to rescue those trapped before the fire officials arrived at the spot. With the help of the fire department later, three people were rescued.

Delhi Fire Service chief Atul Garg said a building collapsed in Gali No. 5 at Janta Colony close to Idgah road in Seelampur.

“A total of seven fire tenders rushed to the site. Three people were rescued and rushed to a nearby hospital. Search operation continues,” Garg said in a statement.

Andhra to unveil policy to tackle declining fertility, says CM Naidu

Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has said that the state government will soon unveil a new policy framework to address declining fertility rates and demographic imbalance.

Speaking at the Amaravati Summit on World Population Day on Friday, Naidu emphasised that population should be treated as the state’s greatest economic strength, not a burden.

“Population is the nation’s strongest economic asset. A robust policy on population growth will be introduced soon,” said Naidu, addressing the summit.

He observed that rising expenses are deterring young couples from having children, while Parliament seats may increase in the future, southern states could see reduced representation.

The CM recalled his earlier efforts promoting family planning and noted that today’s demographic trends call for a shift in focus from control to management of population growth.

“Before 2004, as CM, I incentivised family planning. We even brought a law disqualifying those with more than two children from contesting local body elections,” said Naidu.

He further said that today, there’s a need to amend the law to allow those with more than two children to contest, adding that a nation is not just about its land, regions, towns, or borders, it is about its people.

Naidu said that while developed nations struggle with aging populations, India’s youth advantage remains intact, though not guaranteed unless corrective policies are adopted quickly.

“Our youth population is shrinking while elderly numbers grow. To avoid a human resource crisis, we must encourage larger families,” said Naidu, addressing the summit.

Naidu launched a survey seeking public input on population policy, declaring, “Your voice is our policy guide,” and stressing the importance of aligning welfare with people’s preferences.

He expressed concern that while the global population is increasing, birth rates are declining, and the youth population is shrinking while the elderly population is increasing.

Naidu noted that nations like Japan, Hungary, and Singapore now offer cash, tax exemptions and housing benefits to families with more children.

He pointed out that the southern state’s fertility rate stands at 1.7, well below the replacement rate of 2.1, underscoring the urgency of reversing this trend.

Naidu also cited concerns over the fading of joint family systems, rising cost of living, and the changing outlook of youth, saying such factors must shape future family-centric policies.

Mentioning his recent visit to Kuppam, he shared an anecdote of a three-generation household as a model for societal stability and economic resilience.

Stressing gender equality, he said TDP governments have historically empowered women by giving from the gas cylinder scheme to property rights and representation in colleges and transport services.

Naidu maintained that India’s population advantage will hold only until 2047, urging policymakers to treat human capital as a long-term resource and not a short-term liability.

Nasir-Junaid murder accused commits suicide blames Bajrang Dal members in video before death

Faridabad A suspected cow vigilante allegedly involved in the Nasir-Junaid murders in Rajasthan allegedly committed suicide by jumping in front of a train on the Delhi-Agra railway track near Palwal, officials said on Tuesday.

Before his death, Lokesh Singla also recorded a video alleging that “harassment” by Bajrang Dal members caused him to kill himself. He sent the video message to his wife who later approached the police with a complaint, they said.

A purported last video of Singla has surfaced online.

The charred bodies of Nasir and Junaid were found in a vehicle on the Rajasthan-Haryana border on February 16 after they were allegedly abducted by some vigilantes who accused them of cow smuggling. Singla was one of the accused in the case.

Based on the wife’s complaint, police registered an FIR against three persons for abetment to suicide at the government railway police (GRP), Faridabad.

In the video, Singla said three people were threatening him. “They sent goons to chase me and threatened that I would be implicated in false cases. These are Bajrang Dal state convenor from Hathin, Bharat Bhushan, Harkesh Yadav and Anil Kaushik. Strict action should be taken by police against all of them,” he said.

In her complaint, Singla’s wife Damyanti said the three men had been harassing Singla for a long time. She said her husband was a social worker from Bichhor in Nuh district.

The three men, she alleged, followed him and spied on him. They came to their house and blackmailed him and issued threats to implicate him in a false case, she said.

They also threatened to ruin her husband’s life and kill him, Damyanti added in her complaint.

“My husband was scared of them and he spoke of this to me many times. My husband was broken from the inside, due to which he committed suicide on the Delhi-Agra railway track on July 5 at around 8.30 pm.

“Before committing suicide, he sent a video from his mobile to me,” she said.

He mentioned the threats in the video and sent her a message, requesting the administration to deliver justice, Damyanti said.

Tel Aviv(Israel): Five Israeli soldiers were killed in an attack in Gaza, the Israeli military said Tuesday, while health officials in the Palestinian territory said 18 people were killed in Israeli strikes.

The bloodshed came as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was visiting the White House for talks with US President Donald Trump about a ceasefire plan to pause the Gaza fighting. While there was no announcement of a breakthrough, there were signs of progress toward a deal.

The killings of the soldiers could add to the pressure on Netanyahu to strike a deal in Israel, where polls have shown widespread support for ending the war.

An Israeli security official said explosive devices were detonated against the soldiers during an operation in the Beit Hanoun area in northern Gaza, which was an early target of the war and an area where Israel has repeatedly fought regrouping fighters.

Hamas members also opened fire on the forces who were evacuating the wounded soldiers, the official said. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorised to discuss the incident with the media.

The military said 14 soldiers were wounded in the attack, two of them seriously. It brings the toll of soldiers killed to 888 since the war against Hamas began in 2023.

The soldiers died roughly two weeks after Israel reported one of its deadliest days in months in Gaza, when seven soldiers were killed after a Palestinian attacker attached a bomb to their armoured vehicle.

In a statement, Netanyahu sent his condolences for the deaths, saying the soldiers fell “in a campaign to defeat Hamas and to free all of our hostages.”

Health officials at the Nasser Hospital, where victims of the Israeli strikes were taken, said one of the strikes targeted tents sheltering displaced people in Khan Younis in southern Gaza, killing four people. A separate strike in Khan Younis killed four people, including a mother, father, and their two children, officials said.

In central Gaza, Israeli strikes hit a group of people, killing 10 people and injuring 72 others, according to a statement by Awda Hospital in Nuseirat.

The Israeli military had no immediate comment on the strikes, but it blames Hamas for any harm to civilians, saying the fighter group operates out of populated areas.

The fighting has pushed the health care system in Gaza close to collapse. On Tuesday, the Palestine Red Crescent said the Al-Zaytoun Medical Clinic in Gaza City ceased operations after shelling in the surrounding area. It said the closure would force thousands of civilians to walk long distances to get medical care or obtain vaccinations for children.

Trump has made clear that, following last month’s 12-day war between Israel and Iran, he would like to see the 21-month Gaza conflict end soon. Netanyahu’s visit to Washington may give new urgency to the ceasefire proposal.

White House officials are urging both sides to quickly seal an agreement that would bring about a 60-day pause in the fighting, send aid flooding into Gaza and free at least some of the remaining 50 hostages held in the territory, 20 of whom are believed to be living.

A senior Israeli official said that 80-90 per cent of the details had been ironed out and that a final agreement could be days away. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorised to discuss the sensitive negotiations with the media.

A sticking point has been whether the ceasefire will end the war altogether. Hamas has said it is willing to free all the hostages in exchange for an end to the war and a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. Netanyahu says the war will end once Hamas surrenders, disarms and goes into exile — something it refuses to do.

The war began when Hamas attacked Israel on Oct 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people and taking 251 others hostage. Most have been released in earlier ceasefires. Israel responded with an offensive that has killed over 57,000 Palestinians, more than half of them women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

The ministry, which is under Gaza’s Hamas government, does not differentiate between civilians and combatants. The UN and other international organisations see its figures as the most reliable statistics on war casualties.

Decline in Scheduled Caste population in Karnataka raises concerns

Bengaluru: A recent survey on the Scheduled Caste (SC) population in Karnataka, overseen by Justice Nagamohan Das, has revealed a decline in SC numbers—contradicting national and historical state trends that indicate steady growth.

While the SC population in the state as per the 2011 census was 18%, it may have reduced by one or two per cent as per the latest SC survey, pending the completion of the enumeration, as reported by The New Indian Express on Wednesday.

The findings have triggered alarm among policymakers, demographers, and advocates of social justice, given their implications for representation and resource allocation. Justice Das acknowledged the observed dip. “Yes, I too have noticed the decline. It could either be because SCs have migrated out of Bengaluru to other districts—which is supported by higher SC figures in thirteen districts—or due to social taboo. Many may have hesitated to identify themselves as SCs,” TNIE quoted Das as saying.

While the survey concluded in all parts of the state on Monday, data collection has been extended by six days in Bengaluru city and its urban periphery, which officials believe may help explain the initial drop in figures.

“We have covered 95% of other areas and there is no issue there. But for Bengaluru and surrounding urban areas, we have sought time till July 6 to complete data collection,” Das stated.

Sources quoted in the report noted that verification protocols—such as requiring caste certificates or ration cards—may have led to the exclusion of individuals who previously misrepresented their caste identity. “While this increases the accuracy of the survey, it also lowers the final SC count,” they noted.

Sociologists and survey experts quoted by the news outlet suggest that persistent social stigma could also be a factor. “Many SC individuals still hesitate to declare their identity in public documentation,” an expert noted.

WHO issues global alert on rare vision loss linked to popular diabetes weight loss drugs

Geneva: The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a global safety alert warning of a rare but potentially irreversible vision condition associated with popular diabetes and weight-loss drugs containing semaglutide, including Ozempic, Rybelsus, and Wegovy.

The alert, released on 27 June, highlights the risk of non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION), a condition that can lead to sudden, painless, and irreversible loss of vision, typically in one eye.

“There is currently no effective treatment available for NAION, and the vision loss is generally irreversible,” the WHO stated in its warning.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has already acted on this risk by updating the safety profiles of these drugs. Following a comprehensive safety review, the agency’s Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee (PRAC) recommended that NAION be listed as a “very rare” side effect, potentially affecting up to 1 in 10,000 users.

Semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist, has seen widespread use globally for treating type 2 diabetes and obesity. However, the growing popularity of these drugs has also brought new safety concerns to light.

NAION is considered the second most common optic neuropathy after glaucoma and can present without pain, making early detection more challenging. Common symptoms include sudden vision loss and optic disc swelling.

The WHO noted that its global adverse event database, VigiBase, had received several individual case safety reports of NAION linked to semaglutide use from multiple countries. After assessing these reports during its May 2025 meeting, the WHO Advisory Committee on Safety of Medicinal Products (ACSoMP) recommended revising semaglutide’s risk management plans.

Healthcare professionals worldwide are now being urged to inform patients about this potential risk and to remain vigilant. Patients currently using semaglutide or considering it are advised to seek immediate medical help if they experience any sudden changes in vision.

The alert is part of continued pharmacovigilance efforts around GLP-1-based medications, which have transformed diabetes and obesity care but continue to face evolving scrutiny as their use expands.

Hyderabad: Sigachi Industries Ltd on Wednesday said it lost 40 of its team members in the recent explosion and fire at its Pashamylaram plant. The company also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 1 crore each to the kin of the deceased in the deadly incident.

According to the government figures, the toll remained at 36 as of Wednesday morning.

“It is with anguish that we share details of the accident that occurred at the Sigachi Industries facility in Pashamylaram, Telangana, resulting in the loss of 40 valued team members and one that left over 33 injured,” the company said in a statement.

Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Tuesday said the state government will engage with the management of the firm to ensure that a compensation of Rs 1 crore is paid to each kin of those who died in the horrific accident.

The CM also said those who are seriously injured will receive Rs 10 lakh, while those who are injured but can resume work after some recovery will be provided Rs 5 lakh.

The company further said since the time of the accident, the firm have been coordinating the emergency response, family support, and extending cooperation with the investigation and compliance efforts.

“Sigachi Industries Ltd has committed to an ex-gratia compensation of Rs 1 crore (each) to the families of the deceased, while those injured will receive full medical and rehabilitation support,” it said.

Sigahci also clarified that the accident was not caused by a reactor explosion at the plant as mentioned in sections of the media.

The company said it will continue to send updates as it receives information from the investigations while the plant operations will remain temporarily suspended for approximately 90 days.

The Sangareddy police, based on a complaint by a family member of one of the victims, on Monday registered an FIR against the factory management in connection with the explosion under Sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 110 (attempting to commit culpable homicide), and 117 (Voluntarily causing grievous hurt) of BNS.

Chikkaballapura: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday asserted that he will be in office for a full five-year term.

He said that the Congress party was united and the party’s government will be in power “solid as a rock” for five years.

“Yes, I will be. Why do you have the doubts?” Siddaramaiah said in response to a question by reporters whether he will be the CM for five years.

There has been speculation within political circles, especially within the ruling Congress, for some time now about the Chief Minister change later this year, citing power-sharing agreement involving Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar.

However, Shivakumar on Tuesday said there is no discussion on leadership change and stressed on strengthening the hands of CM Siddaramaiah and the party’s government in the state.

Responding to a question on claims by the BJP and JD(S) leaders that the CM will be replaced, Siddaramaiah shot back, “Are they our high command?”

“R Ashoka (Leader of Opposition in the Assembly) is a BJP man. B Y Vijayendra (state BJP President) is a BJP man. Chalavadi Narayanaswamy (Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council) is a BJP man. Will you write if they say such things? Should you verify or not?” he asked.

Alleging the BJP of spreading lies about the stability of the government, Siddaramaiah said that the Congress party was united and the government will be in power “solid as a rock” for five years.

“No one believes in the BJP. They only lie. They are experts in lying. They don’t know how to speak the truth. So, whether they believe it or not, we don’t know. We are all together (in Congress). As I have said in Mysuru recently, we will be in power for five years. Our government will be as solid as a rock. BJP people are daydreaming,” he said.

Accusing the BJP of doing nothing while in power, he asked, what evidence have they left to say that they have worked for the development of the state in sectors such as — irrigation, rural development, public works, education, and health?

“They (BJP) were in power for about four years and for 1.2 years in coalition government with JD(S) under H D Kumaraswamy’s Chief Ministership. What have they done? They have done nothing. By lying they are trying to mislead the people,” he added.

Responding to a question on ministerial aspirants in the Congress, the CM said the Congress high command will decide.

“In a democracy, everyone has the right to become a CM. The high command (of Congress) will ultimately decide. There are about 140 people (legislators) in our party. Only 34 people can be made ministers. Can everybody be made minister?” he asked.

Earlier in the day, speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, Shivakumar asserted that there is no disgruntlement within the ruling Congress and when Siddaramaiah is there as the CM, there is no need for any discord on the leadership issue.

There was stiff competition between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar for the chief minister’s post after the declaration of Assembly election results in May 2023, and the Congress had managed to convince the latter and made him the Deputy CM.

There were some reports at the time that a compromise had been reached based on a “rotational chief minister formula,” according to which Shivakumar will become CM after two-and-half years, but they have not been officially confirmed by the party.
