Amid deaths due to heart attacks CM Siddaramaiah cautions people against symptoms

Amid deaths due to heart attacks, CM Siddaramaiah cautions people against symptoms
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah

Bengaluru: In the wake of recent cases of deaths due to heart attacks in Hassan, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday cautioned people against symptoms even as an experts committee headed by the Director of Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research has been formed to identify the exact cause behind these deaths.

He urged everyone to visit the nearest health center immediately for a check-up if they have symptoms such as chest pain or difficulty breathing, and not to ignore these signs.

The chief minister said that more than twenty people have died due to heart attacks in the past month alone in just one district of Hassan.

The government is taking this matter very seriously.

To identify the exact cause of these series of deaths and to find solutions, a committee of experts has been formed under the leadership of Dr Ravindranath, Director of Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, and they have been instructed to submit a study report within 10 days he said, in a post on ‘X’.

According to him, orders were given to the same committee back in February to conduct a thorough study on the reasons behind sudden deaths among young people in the state, and whether the COVID vaccines could have had any adverse effects. In this regard, the process of examining and analysing heart patients is also underway.

“We too value the lives of children, youth, and innocent people who have their entire lives ahead of them, and we share the concerns of their families,” he said.

Siddaramaiah condemned the actions of BJP leaders, alleging that they are using such matters for their political gains.

“It cannot be denied that the hasty approval and distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine to the public could also be a reason for these deaths, as several studies worldwide have recently indicated that COVID vaccines could be a cause for the increasing number of heart attacks. Before the BJP criticise us on this matter, they should ask their conscience,” he added.

The chief minister said the state government is fully committed to finding the true cause behind these sudden series of deaths in Hassan district and across the state and to preventing them.

“With this goal, we have already implemented schemes like Hridaya Jyothi and Gruha Arogya to monitor public health. Based on the report from the expert committee under Dr Ravindranath’s guidance, necessary actions will also be taken. As a government, we are making every possible effort to protect the health of the people,” he said.

According to the health department, a directive has also been issued to form a district-level committee to verify the facts of each reported cases of heart attack death in the media. The committee headed by Dr Ravindranath has been instructed to investigate this matter in collaboration with Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences and to submit a report within 10 days.

Health Minister Dinesh Gundo Rao said Dr Ravindranath committee will look into these deaths, conduct an audit, collect all the necessary information, and check for any abnormalities or variations.

“We’ve taken it seriously. If there are any factors beyond medical reasons, those will also be examined and verified. A proper scientific analysis will be done once the report is ready. We have asked the committee to submit the report within 10 days, and based on that, we will take further decisions,” he told reporters here.

Among the reported deaths due to heart attacks in Hassan, four were in the age group of 20 years and below, one in the age group of 21-29 years, five were in the age group of 30-40 years, seven deaths were in the age group of 41-59 years and one death was in the age group of above 60 years, the health department added.

Indian cricketers asked to stay indoors after suspicious packet found in heart of Birmingham

Birmingham The Indian cricket team, staying in the heart of Birmingham, was asked to stay indoors after a suspicious package was found at the nearby Centenary Square.

A BCCI source confirmed to PTI that players were asked not to venture out following a social media post from the Birmingham City Centre Police.

Usually the Indian cricketers explore the areas close to the team hotel and ahead of the second Test, they were frequenting the bustling Broad Street.

A total of eight players including captain Shubman Gill turned up for training at Edgbaston while the other 10 members had an off day.

“We’ve currently got a cordon in place around Centenary Square, Birmingham city centre, while we investigate a suspicious package,” read a post from Birmingham City Centre Police on X.

“We were alerted just before 3pm, and a number of buildings have been evacuated as a precaution while it’s assessed. Please avoid the area,” the message read.

However, an hour later police lifted the cordon.

CM Pinarayi Vijayan warns against twisting isolated incidents to tarnish Kerala’s health system

July 2, 2025 by Nasheman

CM Pinarayi Vijayan warns against ''twisting'' isolated incidents to tarnish Kerala's health system
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan

Kannur (Kerala): Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday warned that taking isolated issues out of context could unfairly tarnish the state’s hard-earned reputation for having one of India’s best public health systems.

His comments followed recent remarks by Dr Haris Chirakkal, a senior government surgeon at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital, who flagged shortages of surgical equipment and delays in critical procedures.

The doctor’s revelations had sparked debate on the condition of Kerala’s state-run hospitals.

While Vijayan did not question the integrity of the doctor, he said such statements, when highlighted in the wrong way, could unintentionally misrepresent the larger picture.

“He is a sincere government employee, free of corruption and deeply committed to his duty. Despite this, he has now inadvertently become the reason for misrepresenting what is arguably the best healthcare system in India. It is unclear whether this was his intention. Still, this incident should serve as a lesson for all of us,” Vijayan said.

The Chief Minister was delivering the concluding address at the regional-level review meeting for the districts of Kannur, Kasaragod, Kozhikode, and Wayanad, held at the Krishna Menon Memorial Government Women’s College auditorium in Kannur, with the participation of ministers and senior officials.

He acknowledged that temporary shortages can happen but insisted that the state government moves quickly to resolve them.

“No one can claim that everything is perfect. Our medical colleges perform highly complex surgeries. The government ensures all necessary support for such procedures. At times, there may be shortages of certain equipment, but that is not a permanent situation. Such issues are addressed quickly, with necessary equipment procured promptly,” Vijayan said.

The Chief Minister added that an official clarification had already been issued regarding the matter raised by Dr Chirakkal.

Dissatisfaction must not become a tool in the hands of those who want to show Kerala in a poor light, he added.

Vijayan said that there is a deliberate attempt to create negativity about Kerala.

He noted that some sectors are functioning well and are widely acknowledged for their good performance, but recent developments show a calculated effort to distort these realities.

Vijayan alleged that some people in society seem to have a vested interest in ensuring that good things do not continue as they are. Unfortunately, the media–which should be reporting the news–are now taking the lead in this distortion.

“Rather than presenting news, they are more interested in pushing their own views,” the Chief Minister said.

Vijayan strongly defended Kerala’s healthcare system, saying it enjoys wide recognition both within and outside the state.

“Our health sector has made significant progress. Compared to the past, there has been steady improvement. This didn’t happen by accident–it is the result of deliberate and focused government intervention,” he said.

The Chief Minister said the budget allocation for health has also been increased accordingly.

But now, he claimed, there is a coordinated effort to misrepresent the sector, particularly by focusing on medical colleges.

“In Kerala, public opinion holds that our medical colleges have grown and improved greatly. Still, efforts are being made to present a false image. We must all be aware of this,” Vijayan said, in an apparent reference to the Congress protest at the Medical Colleges in Kerala on Tuesday.

There is a conscious misinterpretation and a deliberate attempt to portray things in a negative light, he said.

The controversy erupted after Dr Chirakkal posted on Facebook about the shortage of essential medical equipment, which he said had led to the postponement of surgeries.

He alleged that repeated assurances from authorities had failed to resolve the issue, leaving patients in severe pain waiting for timely treatment.

He also said he was under immense mental stress, unable to fulfil his responsibilities to patients who depend on government hospitals.

Director of Medical Education Dr Vishwanathan K later called Dr Chirakkal’s remarks “misleading and an emotional outburst”.

However, Health Minister Veena George refrained from criticising Chirakkal, describing him as a “hardworking and trustworthy doctor”.

She acknowledged systemic issues in the healthcare sector and assured that his concerns would be examined thoroughly.

Netanyahu to head to Washington next Monday as Trump presses for ceasefire in Gaza

Netanyahu to head to Washington next Monday as Trump presses for ceasefire in Gaza
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with US President Donald Trump

Washington: President Donald Trump will host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for talks at the White House next Monday, according to two US administration officials.

The visit comes as the US leader has begun stepping up his push on the Israeli government and Hamas to broker a ceasefire and hostage agreement and bring about an end to the war in Gaza.

The officials were not authorised to comment publicly on the visit that hasn’t been formally announced and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Netanyahu’s visit comes after Israeli Minister for Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer’s visit to Washington this week for talks with senior administration officials on a Gaza ceasefire, Iran and other matters.

The president in public comments has signalled he’s turning his attention to bringing a close to the fighting between Israel and Hamas, since the ceasefire to end 12 days of fighting between Israel and Iran took hold a week ago.

Trump on Friday told reporters, “We think within the next week we’re going to get a ceasefire” in Gaza, but didn’t offer any further explanation for his optimism.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt earlier on Monday said Trump and administration officials were in constant communication with Israeli leadership and bringing about an end to the Gaza conflict is a priority for Trump. It’s heartbreaking to see the images that have come out from both Israel and Gaza throughout this war, and the president wants to see it end. He wants to save lives,” Leavitt added.

An eight-week ceasefire was reached as Trump took office earlier this year, but Israel resumed the war in March after trying to get Hamas to accept new terms on next steps.

Talks between Israel and Hamas have repeatedly faltered over a major sticking point — whether the war should end as part of any ceasefire agreement. About 50 hostages remain captive in Gaza, with less than half believed to be alive.

The timing of Netanyahu’s visit to Washington was first reported by Axios.

Trump will embrace Netanyahu as he pushes back against skeptical questions from Democratic lawmakers and others about how far US and Israeli strikes have set back Iran’s nuclear programme.

A preliminary report issued by the US Defense Intelligence Agency, meanwhile, said the strikes did significant damage to the Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan sites, but did not totally destroy the facilities.

Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said on CBS Face the Nation on Sunday that the three Iranian sites with “capabilities in terms of treatment, conversion and enrichment of uranium have been destroyed to an important degree”.

But, he added some is still standing and that because capabilities remain, “if they so wish, they will be able to start doing this again.

He said assessing the full damage comes down to Iran allowing inspectors access.

Trump in recent days has also inserted himself into Israeli domestic affairs, calling for charges against Netanyahu in his ongoing corruption trial to be thrown out.

Trump’s in a social media post last week condemned the trial as a “WITCH HUNT”, and vowed that the United States will be the one who “saves” Netanyahu from serious corruption charges.

The decision by Trump to plunge himself into one of Israel’s most heated debates has unnerved some in its political class.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration on Monday approved a new half-billion-dollar arms sale to Israel to resupply its military with bomb guidance kits for precision munitions.

The State Department said the sale is worth USD 510 million. It includes more than 7,000 guidance kits for two different types of Joint Direct Attack Munitions, or JDAMs.

The deal is relatively small given that the U.S. provides Israel with more than USD 3 billion annually in military aid. But Israel has relied on JDAMs and other related US weaponry in its war against Hamas in Gaza and its recent strikes against Iran.

“The United States is committed to the security of Israel, and it is vital to U.S. national interests to assist Israel to develop and maintain a strong and ready self-defense capability,” the department said in a statement.

“This proposed sale is consistent with those objectives.”

Siddaramaiah demands immediate roll back of hike in railway fares

Siddaramaiah demands immediate roll back of hike in railway fares
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah

Bengaluru: Slamming the BJP-led government at the Centre for the railway fare hike, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has demanded its immediate rollback.

The railway ministry issued an official circular on Monday, increasing the fares of the non-air-conditioned class in mail and express trains by 1 paisa and all air-conditioned classes by 2 paise per kilometre from July 1.

The daily wage workers, students, small traders, and the common man struggling under rising prices

He said When we increased milk prices to help our farmers, Karnataka BJP shouted in the streets and called it anti-people. But now when the BJP led Union Govt hikes railway fares there is deafening silence. Why

Because this hike doesn’t help farmers or the poor it only helps BJP Government fill its own coffers.

Noting that when metro fares were hiked in Karnataka after 8 years, BJP leaders rushed to blame the Congress government, ignoring the fact that the fare hike decision was taken by a fare fixation committee constituted by the Union Government itself, he said. Back then, the Centre manipulated the narrative to place the burden on the state government Siddaramaiah added.

Stating that the Congress stands with the people of Karnataka and the country who are forced to pay more for essential travel, Siddaramaiah said this fare hike must be rolled back immediately.

Don’t make people’s daily travel another jumla. Let the trains run not the people’s patience he added.

Cal HC orders Md Shami monthly payment of Rs 4 lakh as maintenance to estranged wife daughter

Cal HC orders Md Shami monthly payment of Rs 4 lakh as maintenance to estranged wife, daughter
Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami

Kolkata: Calcutta High Court directed Indian pacer Mohammed Shami to pay his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, and daughter a monthly alimony of Rs 4 lakh as maintenance during the ongoing legal battle with his spouse.

Jahan had moved the high court against a district sessions court’s order directing the cricketer to pay Rs 50,000 to his wife and Rs 80,000 to her daughter in 2023.

“In my considered opinion, a sum of Rs 1,50,000 per month to the petitioner no.1 (wife) and Rs 2,50,000 to her daughter would be just fair and reasonable to ensure financial stability for both the petitioners, till disposal of the main application,” the order passed by Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee on Tuesday stated.

“However as regards petitioner’s child the husband /opposite party No 2 will always be at liberty to voluntarily assist her with educational and/or other reasonable expenses, over and above the aforesaid amount,” the order added.

Jahan had lodged an FIR at the Jadavpur police station against Shami and his family in March 2018, four years after their marriage in April 2014, alleging “enormous physical and mental torture” under Section 12 of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violation (PWDV) Act, 2005 and “sustained indifference and neglect” of her minor daughter.

Besides domestic violence, she also accused Shami of dowry harassment and match-fixing while alleging that Shami had stopped shouldering financial responsibility for running her family expenses.

She had prayed for monetary relief, including an interim monetary relief of Rs 7 lakh per month for herself and an additional Rs 3 lakh for her daughter.

The magistrate, while disposing of her application, had initially rejected her prayer for monetary relief and directed the pacer a monthly payment of Rs 80,000 towards his minor daughter.

On appeal, the order was later modified, directing Shami to a monthly payment of Rs 50,000 to his wife and Rs 80,000 to his daughter.

“In view of materials placed before me and considering the elements for the determination of the quantum of maintenance as held in the salutary judgments, I am of the view that the quantum of interim monetary relief as fixed by the court below requires revision,” the high court order stated.

“The opposite party/husband’s income, financial disclosure and earnings established that he is in a position to pay a higher amount. The petitioner’s wife, who has remained unmarried and is living independently with the child, is entitled to a levelled maintenance that she enjoyed during her continuance of marriage and which reasonably secures her future as well as the future of the child,” it went on to add.

20 states sue after Trump administration releases private Medicaid data to deportation officials

20 states sue after Trump administration releases private Medicaid data to deportation officials
US President Donald Trump

Washington (AP): The Trump administration violated federal privacy laws when it turned over Medicaid data on millions of enrollees to deportation officials last month, California Attorney General Rob Bonta alleged on Tuesday, saying he and 19 other states’ attorneys general have sued over the move.

Health secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr’s advisers ordered the release of a dataset that includes the private health information of people living in California, Illinois, Washington state, and Washington, DC, to the Department of Homeland Security, The Associated Press first reported last month.

All of those states allow non-US citizens to enrol in Medicaid programmes that pay for their expenses using only state taxpayer dollars.

The unusual data sharing of private health information, including addresses, names, social security numbers, immigration status, and claims data for enrollees in those states, was released to deportation officials as they accelerated enforcement efforts across the country. The data could be used to help the Department of Homeland Security locate migrants in its mass deportation campaign, experts said.

Bonta said the Trump administration’s data release violates federal health privacy protection laws, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

“This is about flouting seven decades of federal law policy and practice that have made it clear that personal healthcare data is confidential and can only be shared in certain narrow circumstances that benefit the public’s health or the Medicaid program,” Bonta said during a news conference on Tuesday.

The Trump administration has sought to arm deportation officials with more data on immigrants. In May, for example, a federal judge refused to block the Internal Revenue Service from sharing immigrants’ tax data with Immigration and Customs Enforcement to help agents locate and detain people living without legal status in the U.S.

The move to shore up the federal government’s data on immigrant Medicaid enrollees appears to have been set in motion in May, when the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced it would be reviewing some states rolls to ensure federal funds have not been used to pay for coverage for people with “unsatisfactory immigration status.”

As part of the review, CMS asked California, Washington and Illinois to share details about non-US citizens who have enrolled in their state’s Medicaid program, according to a June 6 memo signed by Medicaid Deputy Director Sara Vitolo that was obtained by the AP. The memo was written by several CMS officials under Vitolo’s supervision, according to sources familiar with the process.

CMS officials attempted to fight the data sharing request from Homeland Security, saying that to do so would violate federal laws, including the Social Security Act and the Privacy Act of 1974, according to the memo.

The legal arguments outlined in the memo were not persuasive to Trump appointees at HHS, which oversees the Medicaid agency.

Four days after the memo was sent, on June 10, HHS officials directed the transfer of “the data to DHS by 5:30 ET today,” according to email exchanges obtained by AP.

HHS is “aggressively cracking down on states that may be misusing federal Medicaid funds,” agency spokesman Andrew Nixon said in a statement. The agency has not provided details on DHS’ role in the effort. Nixon also defended the legality of releasing the data to DHS.

“HHS acted entirely within its legal authority – and in full compliance with all applicable laws – to ensure that Medicaid benefits are reserved for individuals who are lawfully entitled to receive them,” he said in the statement.

Dozens of Democratic members of Congress — in both the House and Senate — have sent letters to the involved agencies, demanding that data sharing cease and that Homeland Security destroy the information it has received so far.

Minor boy pushes teen to death from Mumbai building tries to pass it off as suicide

July 2, 2025 by Nasheman

Mumbai: Police have registered a murder case against a minor boy after he allegedly pushed to death a 15-year-old girl from the terrace of a building in Mumbai and tried to pass it off as a suicide, an official said.

The 16-year-old accused and the victim were friends. The girl was a student of an international school and resided with her mother in Mulund area.

On June 24, the girl arrived at a housing society in Bhandup (West) area to meet the boy and discussed her academic stress with him, the Bhandup police official said on Tuesday.

The boy then took her atop a water tank on the terrace of the building’s D-wing. While they were chatting, their conversation turned into a heated argument about dating, the official said.

During the argument, the boy allegedly pushed the girl, causing the teenager to fall to her death from the building, he said.

The boy subsequently threw the girl’s mobile phone from the terrace, which landed near the building’s E-wing.

A security guard spotted the girl’s body in the duct area and alerted the police.

During the investigation, the boy told the police that the girl had committed suicide by jumping from a window between the 30th and 31st floors due to study-related stress, the official said.

After examining the building’s CCTV footage, the police detained the boy who later confessed to the crime, the official said.

A case on charges of murder was registered against the boy on Monday night and he was sent to a juvenile detention centre in Dongri, the police said.
