India secure morale-boosting draw after hundreds by Gill, Jadeja and Washington

Manchester: Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar and Shubman Gill struck fine hundreds as India secured a morale-boosting draw in the 4th Test here on Sunday.

The stalemate was achieved after Gill (103), Rahul (90), Jadeja (107 not out), and Washington (101 not out) fired with the bat on a fifth day pitch after India started their second innings 311 runs in arrears.

England lead the series 2-1 heading into the fifth and final Test.

For skipper Gill, this was his fourth century of the ongoing rubber as he became the first Asian batter to cross 700 runs in a Test series in England.

Earlier in the day, opener Rahul was dismissed by Ben Stokes for a doughty 90, ending a 188-run partnership for the third wicket with Gill.

Resuming the day on 174 for two and with a deficit of 137 runs, overnight batter Gill completed his hundred before falling to Jofra Archer just before lunch at Old Trafford.

Brief scores:

India: 358 and 425/4 in 143 overs (KL Rahul 90, Shubman Gill 103, Ravindra Jadeja 107, Washington Sundar 101; Chris Woakes 2/67)

England 1st innings: 669 all out in 157.1 overs (Joe Root 150, Ben Stokes 141, Ben Duckett 94, Zak Crawley 84; Ravindra Jadeja 4/143).

MDMA drug manufacturing facility raided in Mysuru by Maharashtra and local police

July 28, 2025 by Nasheman

Mysuru: A MDMA drug manufacturing facility was raided here by Maharashtra police in coordination with the Mysuru City police, police sources said on Sunday.

MDMA or ecstasy was reportedly being manufactured at the facility. A large quantity of the drug was seized during the raid on Saturday, they said.

Four persons have been arrested and have been taken to Mumbai, police sources said.

Home Minister G Parameshwara confirmed the raid by the Maharashtra police in coordination with Mysuru police.

Speaking to reporters in Davangere, he said, “In Mysuru an MDMA manufacturing facility was raided by Mumbai police. Based on the information they got from a person arrested by them, they came and requested our police. They have caught some people. This is really worrying. Further action is being taken.”

Parameshwara said an investigation will be conducted and, based on the information gathered, action will be taken.

Karnataka police will also investigate. “This has happened in our state. Where have all they supplied? How long have they been functioning? Was it newly started? All those things will be looked into. It is said that they were functioning for 20 days. Maybe they were active earlier too. Our police will also inquire,” he said.

Israel again intercepts Gaza-bound ship carrying activists humanitarian aid

July 28, 2025 by Nasheman

Tel Aviv: The Israeli military has intercepted a Gaza-bound aid ship seeking to break the Israeli blockade of the Palestinian territory, detaining 21 international activists and journalists and seizing all cargo, including baby formula, food and medicine, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition said Sunday.

The coalition that operates the vessel Handala said the Israeli military “violently intercepted” the ship in international waters about 40 nautical miles from Gaza, cutting the cameras and communication, just before midnight Saturday.

“All cargo was non-military, civilian and intended for direct distribution to a population facing deliberate starvation and medical collapse under Israel’s illegal blockade,” the group said in a statement.

The Israeli military had no immediate comment. Israel’s Foreign Ministry posted on X early Sunday that the Navy stopped the vessel and was bringing it to shore.

It was the second ship operated by the coalition that Israel has prevented in recent months from delivering aid to Gaza, where food experts have for months warned of the risk of famine. Activist Greta Thunberg was among 12 activists on board the ship Madleen when it was seized by the Israeli military in June.

The ship’s interception comes as Israel faces mounting international criticism over the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza, with concern growing over rising hunger in the territory amid Israeli restrictions on aid.

A regional human rights group, Adalah, said the raid on the vessel violated international law. It demanded the immediate release of the 21 activists, including lawmakers and human rights campaigners, from 10 countries.

“The flotilla never entered Israeli territorial waters, nor was it intended to do so; it was headed toward the territorial waters of the State of Palestine, as recognised under international law,” Adalah said in a statement. “Israel has no legal jurisdiction or authority over the international waters in which the vessel was sailing.”

Adalah demanded immediate disclosure of the activists’ location and legal status.

Lawmaker Nicola Fratoianni, of a left-wing environmentalist party, called on the Italian government to ensure the safety of the two Italians on board.

Also on board were seven US citizens, including a human rights attorney, a Jewish US war veteran and a Jewish-American activist, according to the Freedom Flotilla Coalition.

July 28, 2025 by Nasheman

Sport must go on: Sourav Ganguly on India-Pakistan Asia Cup clash
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly

Kolkata: Former India captain Sourav Ganguly on Sunday said he has no issues with India being placed in the same group as Pakistan in the upcoming Asia Cup, asserting that while terrorism must end, sport must continue.

As per the schedule, arch-rivals India and Pakistan are clubbed in Group A and are set to face off at the Dubai International Stadium on September 14.

“I’m okay with the schedule. Sport must continue. What happened in Pahalgam should never happen, but we can’t let that stop the game. Terrorism must end. India has taken a firm stand against it, it’s in the past now. Sport must go on,” Ganguly told PTI.

The T20 tournament will be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from September 9 to 28.

India will begin their campaign against UAE on September 10 and are expected to play all their matches in Dubai. India and Pakistan could also meet again in the Super Four stage on September 21.

Group A comprises India, Pakistan, UAE and Oman, while Group B includes Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Hong Kong.

The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) will allow 17-member squads for the 19-match tournament, with matches scheduled in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

While the BCCI is the official host, the tournament is being held in the UAE as India and Pakistan have agreed to play only at neutral venues till 2027 due to ongoing cross-border tensions.

The two countries had come close to the brink of war following the Pahalgam attack, to which India responded with Operation Sindoor.

I have great respect for Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar: Yathindra Siddaramaiah

July 28, 2025 by Nasheman

MLC Dr. Yathindra Siddaramaiah

Mysuru: MLC Dr. Yathindra Siddaramaiah clarified on Sunday that he holds immense respect for Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar, the former Maharaja of Mysuru, and denied making any derogatory remarks about him. Speaking to the media in Mysuru, he stated that the late king’s governance has been an inspiration, and he has always spoken with admiration and respect at various events held in Wadiyar’s name.

Yathindra emphasized that he never meant to undermine the contributions of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar. “I only meant that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is working to develop Mysuru in line with the Maharaja’s vision,” he said. Referring to the recently held Sadhana Samavesha, Yathindra highlighted that over ₹2,500 crore has been allocated by CM Siddaramaiah for Mysuru’s development, a record amount post-Independence by any chief minister.

He further accused the opposition of lacking issues to criticize and hence resorting to twisting his statement for political mileage. “Let them show if any other CM has sanctioned funds of this magnitude for Mysuru’s development,” he challenged.

Two dead 32 injured in temple stampede in UP’s Barabanki

July 28, 2025 by Nasheman

Barabanki: Two people were killed and 32 injured in a stampede at a temple here after a live electric wire, broken by monkeys, fell onto a tin shed early on Monday, officials said.

The incident occurred at the Avsaneshwar temple in the Haidergarh area during the holy month of Shravan on Monday when devotees had gathered at the temple for ‘jalabhishek’ (offering water as a ritual). The electric current spread through the tin shed as the wire fell, triggering panic and a stampede in the temple premises.

Prashant (22) from the Mubarakpura village under the Lonikatra police station area and another 30-year-old devotee succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment at the Trivediganj Community Health Centre (CHC), officials said.

This comes a day after eight people were killed in a stampede that broke out during a rush of pilgrims along a stair route leading to the Mansa Devi temple on a hilltop in Haridwar. Rumours of an electric current where the stairs begin triggered panic among people, leading to the stampede, according to the police.

A total of 10 injured persons were brought to Trivediganj CHC, of whom five were referred to higher medical centres due to their critical condition.

Meanwhile, 26 injured devotees are being treated at the Haidergarh CHC, and one of them has been referred for advanced care due to serious injuries.

Following the incident, there was chaos in the temple and surrounding areas. District and police officials reached the spot and are working to manage the situation. An investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the incident.

Barabanki District Magistrate Shashank Tripathi said that during the ‘jalabhishek’ ritual, monkeys had damaged an electric wire, which caused current to flow through three tin sheds in the temple complex.

The resulting panic led to a stampede in which two people lost their lives and more than two dozens were injured, he added.

Devotees later resumed their worship at the temple.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and extended his condolences to the bereaved families.

At least 3 killed and others injured in train derailment in southern Germany

July 28, 2025 by Nasheman

Berlin: A regional passenger train derailed in southern Germany on Sunday, killing at least three people and seriously injuring others, authorities said.

Federal and local police said the cause of the crash near Riedlingen, roughly 158 kilometers (98 miles) west of Munich, remains under investigation. Photos from the scene showed parts of the train on its side as rescuers climbed atop the carriages.

It was not immediately clear how many people were injured. Roughly 100 people were onboard the train when at least two carriages derailed in a forested area around 6:10 p.m. (1610 GMT).

Storms passed through the area before the crash and investigators were seeking to determine if the rain was a factor.

“There have been heavy rains here, so it cannot be ruled out that the heavy rain and a related landslide accident may have been the cause. However, this is currently the subject of ongoing investigations,” said Thomas Strobl, interior minister of the state of Baden Württenberg.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, in a post on social platform X, said he mourned the victims and gave his condolences to their families.

Deutsche Bahn, Germany’s main national railway operator, said in a statement that it was cooperating with investigators. The company also offered its condolences.

Palghar school watchman held for sexually abusing two minor boys

July 28, 2025 by Nasheman

Police have arrested a 53-year-old security guard of a private school in Maharashtra’s Palghar district for allegedly sexually abusing two male students, officials said.

The alleged incidents occurred between June 15 and 20, the officials said on Sunday.

The victims, aged 17 and 15, are students of the same school located in Virar area.

“The alleged incidents occurred in the canteen of the school,” the Arnala police stated.

The accused was arrested on Saturday evening, the police said.

“After receiving a complaint from the school’s manager, we registered an FIR against the watchman, Raymond Wilson Dias, under section 75 (sexual harassment) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and sections 5, 8 and 12 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act,” the Arnala police station official said.

Sections 5 of the POCSO Act pertains to penetrative sexual assault.

In August 2024, a male sweeper at a school in Badlapur in neighbouring Thane district allegedly sexually abused two four-year-old girls, causing a huge outrage and massive protests.

The accused was killed in September last year in the ‘retaliatory firing’ by police after he allegedly snatched the gun from a policeman in a police vehicle.
