BJP’s development model aimed at snatching right to education from poor children: Rahul Gandhi

BJP's development model aimed at snatching right to education from poor children: Rahul Gandhi
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday alleged that the BJP’s development model is one that is aimed at snatching the right to education from the poor, especially SC, ST and OBC children.

The leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha shared on Facebook screenshots of some media reports.

One media report claimed that the number of government schools declined by 8 per cent but private schools increased by 14.9 per cent in the decade from 2014-15 to 2023-24, while another claimed that the enrolment of SC students in 2023-24 compared to previous fiscal year fell by 16.2 lakh students, while enrolment of ST students and OBC students declined by 5.1 lakh and 38.5 lakh respectively during this period.

In a post in Hindi on X, Gandhi alleged that the “BJP’s development model is a model to snatch the right to education from the poor, especially SC, ST and OBC children”.

“More than 5,000 government schools are being closed in Uttar Pradesh. Since 2014, 84,441 government schools have been closed across the country, most of which have been closed in three BJP-ruled states – Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Assam,” he said.

“This is not just closing schools, but a direct attack on the right to education given in the Constitution and the historic law of the UPA government, which brought every child from every village to school and led to a historic increase in enrolment,” Gandhi said.

Babasaheb Ambedkar had stated that education is the milk of a lioness and whoever drinks it will roar, but today education itself is being snatched away, he alleged.

“Students and teachers are on the streets against the decision to close schools, but instead of listening to their voice, the government is busy harassing them and weakening the education system further. Whereas the need is to strengthen it and provide equal, accessible and quality education to every child,” Gandhi said.

Elderly woman tied to tree beaten over garbage dispute in Shivamogga

July 1, 2025 by Nasheman

Shivamogga (Karnataka): A 70-year-old woman was allegedly tied to a tree and brutally “assaulted” by her neighbour following an argument over garbage disposal in front of her house, police said on Monday.

The incident occurred on the morning of June 24 in Gautampura village but came to light only after a video of the assault went viral on social media, sparking widespread outrage, they added.

The elderly woman, Huchamma, confronted her neighbour, Prema, for dumping garbage in front of her house, leading to a heated argument during which she allegedly made remarks about the latter’s “character”.

Enraged, Prema, with the help of two male relatives, allegedly dragged the elderly woman out of her house, tied her to a tree, and “assaulted” her, a senior police officer said.

“A case was registered at Anandapura police station the very next day, as soon as the matter came to our notice. Prema, who is also a relative of the septuagenarian, has been arrested,” police added.

Ayush Shetty clinches maiden BWF World Tour title at US Open Tanvi finishes runner-up

Ayush Shetty clinches maiden BWF World Tour title at US Open; Tanvi finishes runner-up
Shuttler Ayush Shetty

Iowa (US): Rising shuttler Ayush Shetty notched up his first BWF World Tour title with a commanding straight-games victory over Canada’s Brian Yang in the men’s singles final of the US Open Super 300, ending India’s title drought this season.

The 20-year-old, a 2023 junior world championships bronze winner, defeated the third seeded Yang 21-18 21-13 in 47 minutes on Sunday to cap off an impressive week, which included a come-from-behind win against top seed Chou Tien Chen in the semifinals.

It was Shetty’s third victory over Yang, having defeated him twice earlier this year at Malaysia and Taipei Open.

“It means a lot, it’s my first title in the senior circuit. So I’m really happy,” the 6 ft-4 inch shuttler told BWF.

“There are a lot of positives to take away. I played some excellent badminton here, and I’m looking forward to the Canada Open next week.”

In the women’s singles final, 16-year-old Tanvi Sharma finished runner-up after a fighting three-game loss to top seed Beiwen Zhang of the United States.

Playing her first World Tour final, the unseeded teenager went down 11-21 21-16 10-21 in 46 minutes.

“I’m very happy with my performance. I was a bit nervous before entering the court, and I made many mistakes. This is my first Super 300 final, so I’m happy about that,” Tanvi said.

Shetty vs Yang

The men’s singles final began evenly with scores tied at 6-6, but Shetty, seeded fourth, surged ahead with a string of winners to lead 11-6 at the interval.

Yang narrowed the gap to 13-11 and drew level at 16-16, but Shetty regained control with well-placed shots to secure the opening game with a decisive jump smash.

The second game saw the Mangalore shuttler race to a 7-2 lead before Yang briefly caught up, but the Indian maintained composure, mixing variations and sharp defence to keep his opponent at bay.

Leading 17-12, Shetty closed out the match with a cross-court punch followed by a powerful smash to seal his maiden World Tour title.

“He was defending quite well in the first game. I varied my smashes a bit, played some half-smashes and drops and that made a difference,” said Shetty.

“In the first game I was hurrying a bit playing some sharp strokes. In the second game I was more confident, I opened up the game and that made the difference.”

Shetty had reached the finals of 2023 Odisha Masters Super 100 tournament, besides making the summit clash at the 2023 Bahrain International and 2024 Dutch Open.

Tanvi vs Zhang

In the women’s singles final, Tanvu struggled to settle early as Zhang built an 11-5 lead in the opening game, which the Indian couldn’t breach.

In the second game, Tanvi came out attacking, taking a 4-0 lead and maintaining her advantage despite Zhang pushing her with long rallies.

From 11-9 at the interval, the Indian continued her aggressive approach, forcing errors from Zhang and taking the game to force a decider.

However, Tanvi ran out of steam in the third game as Zhang surged to an 11-4 lead at the break and closed out the match comfortably to claim the title.

Four arrested for ‘assaulting’ Sri Ram Sene members in Belagavi

July 1, 2025 by Nasheman

Belagavi (Karnataka): Four people have been arrested for allegedly “assaulting” five members of the Sri Ram Sene by tying them to a tree in Ingali village, police said on Monday.

A video of the incident, which took place in Hukkeri taluk on June 28, has gone viral on social media, prompting police to register a case on their own.

The video shows five men tied to a coconut tree and being “thrashed” by a group of villagers. Sri Ram Sene members claimed they were attacked for stopping the illegal transportation of cattle.

However, villagers alleged the assault was unrelated to cattle transportation and accused the activists of “misbehaving with women”.

According to police, on June 26, Sri Ram Sene members intercepted a vehicle carrying cattle and took the driver and vehicle to the Hukkeri police station, alleging the cattle were being transported for slaughter.

The cattle were moved to a cow shelter but were returned to the locals on June 28 after authorities confirmed they had been purchased for dairy farming.

Later that day, Sri Ram Sene members allegedly trespassed into a villager’s house in an attempt to reclaim the cattle and created a “ruckus”. At the time, only women were present, police said, without providing more details about them.

Superintendent of Police Bheemashankar S Guled said the villagers “assaulted” the activists as they were angered by the trespassing incident.

“This act by the villagers is a violation of law and order. However, the victims are not entirely innocent—one of them is a rowdy-sheeter who had been externed from the district,” he alleged.

Guled also dismissed claims that “the assault was communal”.

“One of the accused is a Hindu. This doesn’t appear to be a case of communal violence,” Guled added.

Denying allegations of police ‘inaction’, Guled said, “We registered a case on our own and arrested four people for the assault. Another case was filed based on a complaint from the cattle transporter. Further investigation is underway.”

Dhoni seeks trademark for sobriquet 'Captain Cool'
Former Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni

New Delhi: Former Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has filed a trademark application for the phrase ‘CAPTAIN COOL’, a sobriquet widely associated with his calm on-field demeanour.

According to the Trade Marks Registry portal, the application’s status is ‘accepted and advertised’. It was published in the official trademark journal on June 16. The application was filed on June 5.

The proposed trademark is registered under the category for sports training, providing sports training facilities, sports coaching and services.

No comments could immediately be obtained from Dhoni.

Interestingly, another company, Prabha Skill Sports (OPC) Pvt Ltd, had earlier filed a similar application for the phrase. However, that application’s status is showing as ‘rectification filed’.

Earlier this month, Dhoni was inducted into the ICC’s Hall of Fame for the year 2025 along with seven cricketers, including Australian great Matthew Hayden and South Africa’s Hashim Amla.

The ICC hailed Dhoni as a player who excelled not just in numbers but also in “extraordinary consistency, fitness and longevity”.

“Celebrated for his calm under pressure and unmatched tactical nous, but also a trailblazer in the shorter formats, MS Dhoni’s legacy as one of the game’s greatest finishers, leaders and wicketkeepers has been honoured with his induction into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame,” the ICC statement had said.

Railway ministry hikes fares of AC classes by 2 paise non-AC by 1 paisa per km from July 1

July 1, 2025 by Nasheman

The railway ministry issued an official circular on Monday, increasing the fares of the non-air-conditioned class in mail and express trains by 1 paisa and all air-conditioned classes by 2 paise per kilometre from July 1.

Ministry officials had on June 24 hinted at the proposed fare revision.

However, the official circular with the fare table according to trains and class categories was released on Monday.

The fares of suburban trains and monthly season tickets have been left unchanged in the interest of daily commuters.

The ordinary second-class fare has not been increased for up to 500 km and for distances beyond that, there is an increase in the ticket prices by half a paisa per km.

The passengers of ordinary sleeper class and first class will also have to pay half a paisa more per km more from July 1.

“The fare revision also applies to premier and special train services, such as Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Duronto, Vande Bharat, Tejas, Humsafar, Amrit Bharat, Mahamana, Gatimaan, Antyodaya, Jan Shatabdi, Yuva Express, AC Vistadome coaches, Anubhuti coaches and ordinary non-suburban services, in accordance with the revised class-wise fare structure,” the ministry said in a press note.

“Revised fares will apply to tickets booked on or after 01.07.2025. Tickets issued before this date will remain valid at the existing fare without any fare adjustment. PRS, UTS and manual ticketing systems are being updated accordingly,” it added.

According to the ministry, there is no change in ancillary charges. For instance, the reservation fees, superfast surcharges and other charges have remained unchanged.

Similarly, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) will continue to be charged in accordance with the applicable rules and the fare-rounding principles will remain as per the existing norms.

Paresh Rawal returns to Hera Pheri 3

Paresh Rawal returns to 'Hera Pheri 3': It is all resolved now

New Delhi: Veteran actor Paresh Rawal has confirmed his return to the third installment of the comedy franchise Hera Pheri saying that everything is resolved now.

In May this year, Rawal had announced his exit from the third part, which would have reunited him with franchise co-stars Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty as well as filmmaker Priyadarshan. The news had come as a huge shock to the ardent fanbase of the hit comedy franchise.

What followed was a lawsuit filed by Akshay, who is also the producer on the project through his company Cape of Good Films.

Rawal has now joined back the movie, an announcement he made during his recent appearance on a podcast.

“Pehle bhi aane hi waali thi (it was supposed to come before also), but it’s just that we had to fine-tune ourselves. After all, all of them are creative, be it Priyadarshan, Akshay or Suniel. They are friends for many many, many years,” Rawal said on Himanshu Mehta’s podcast.

The veteran actor also said there is no “controversy”, referring to Akshay’s lawsuit, which sought Rs 25 crore in damages.

“I believe that when people have loved something so much, then you have to be extra careful. It is our responsibility toward the audience. The audience has given you so much adulation.

“You can’t take things for granted. Mehnat karke unko (film) do. So, I was of the opinion that sab saath mein aaye, mehnat kare (everyone should come together and work hard). Aur kuch nahin (Nothing else). It is all resolved now,” he added.

Directed by Priyadarshan, “Hera Pheri” released in 2000 and revolved around a quirky, kind-hearted garage owner Baburao Ganpatrao Apte (Rawal), a cunning loafer Raju (Kumar) and a struggling pauper Shyam (Shetty).

The trio returned with a sequel “Phir Hera Pheri” in 2006, which was directed by Neeraj Vora.

I stand firmly with Diljit Dosanjh: Naseeruddin Shah on ‘Sardaar Ji 3’ controversy

July 1, 2025 by Nasheman

I stand firmly with Diljit Dosanjh: Naseeruddin Shah on 'Sardaar Ji 3' controversy

New Delhi: Cinema veteran Naseeruddin Shah on Monday defended Punjabi star Diljit Dosanjh amid backlash over Pakistani actor Hania Aamir’s role in “Sardaar Ji 3”, saying casting is not the actor-musician’s responsibility.

The row began last week after Dosanjh shared the trailer of “Sardaar Ji 3”, which made its debut in overseas territories on June 27 and skipped release in India.

Many social media users have called for a ban on Dosanjh, while trade unions like the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) and the Federation of Western lndia Cine Employees (FWICE) have criticised the Punjabi actor-musician for collaborating with Aamir in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack.

Shah, who will feature alongside Dosanjh in filmmaker Imtiaz Ali’s next film, shared a post on his official Facebook page, saying that he firmly stands with the actor on the issue.

The veteran actor, known for taking a stand on pertinent issues, said if someone has to be blamed for casting Aamir in the movie, then it should be the film’s director.

“I STAND FIRMLY WITH DILJIT. The dirty tricks deptt of the Jumla Party has been awaiting a chance to attack him. They think they’ve got it at last. He was not responsible for the casting of the film; the director was.

“But no one knows who he is, whereas Diljit is known the world over, and he agreed to the cast because his mind is not poisoned,” Shah wrote.

“Sardaar Ji 3” is helmed by Amar Hundal and also stars Neeru Bajwa.

Shah further said he has close relatives and friends in Pakistan and no one can stop him from meeting them.

“What these goons want is to put an end to personal interaction between the people of India and Pakistan. I have close relatives and some dear friends there and no one can stop me from meeting them or sending them love whenever I feel like it. And my response to those who will say ‘Go to Pakistan’ is ‘GO TO KAILASA’,” he wrote.

Imtiaz Ali, who earlier directed Dosanjh in the critically-acclaimed 2024 movie “Amar Singh Chamkila”, came out in support of the actor at an event last week.

“Since I know Diljit, I can say that us mein deshbhakti ka jazbaa poora bhara hua hai (He is a patriot at heart). He is a son of the soil. You can see at all his concerts, he shows up with the Indian flag.

“He is not a guy who fakes things… No one asked him to do it. At the end of all his concerts, he says, “Main hoon Punjab”, with the Indian flag. I don’t know the details, but casting someone isn’t the decision of the actor. I don’t know how it went, but I know that uske andar desh prem bahut zyada hai (He loves his country too much),” Ali said.

In an interview with the BBC Asian Network last week, Dosanjh defended the decision to release “Sardaar Ji 3” in overseas territories. He also said when he signed the movie, there was no trouble between India and Pakistan.

Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, which claimed 26 lives. In retaliation, the Indian armed forces carried out strikes on nine terror camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) on May 7, in an operation codenamed Operation Sindoor.

In the aftermath, social media accounts of many Pakistani actors, including Aamir, Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan, Ali Zafar, Atif Aslam and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, were withheld in India.

Many trade organisations also reiterated their call for a ban on Pakistani artists in the Indian film industry.

“As many as 12 people died and 34 people are under treatment. We are hopeful that there would be no more (deaths),” the health minister told reporters.

Labour Minister G Vivek Venkatswamy said: “Eight people died in the morning. Now, four bodies were found.”

Both the ministers visited the site.

The explosion took place at a reactor in the plant of Sigachi pharma company in the Pashamylaram industrial estate due to the suspected chemical reaction where fire also broke out.

Earlier, Inspector General of Police (Multizone) V Satyanarayana, quoting factory sources, said there were 150 people in the factory at the time of the blast. Ninety persons were in the same area where the explosion occurred.

He said the explosion occurred between 9.28 am and 9.35 am. The management immediately reached out to the local police who in turn alerted the fire department.

About ten fire fighting engines were pressed into service, he further said, adding the personnel of NDRF and SDRF were also engaged in the rescue operation.

The fire was brought under control, he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the fire tragedy and conveyed condolences to those who lost their loved ones in the incident. He wished an early recovery to the injured.

In a post on ‘X’, he announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured.

Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy expressed anguish over the incident and directed officials to take all steps to save the trapped workers and provide them advanced medical care, an official release said.

Sigachi Industries Limited is a pharmaceutical company dedicated to pioneering advancements in Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs), Intermediates, Excipients, vitamin-mineral blends, and Operations and Management (O&M) services, according to the company’s website.

There was no immediate reaction from the company.

Minister Ramalinga Reddy orders crackdown on overcharging autos in Bengaluru

Minister Ramalinga Reddy orders crackdown on overcharging autos in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: Karnataka Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy has directed the Transport Commissioner to take strict action against app-based and other autorickshaws in Bengaluru that charge fares above the government-fixed rates, calling the practice a “daylight robbery”.

The minister said permits of such autos should be cancelled and cases registered against the violators.

“If there is a complaint from passengers about overcharging, cancellation of the journey if the higher fare is not paid, immediate action should be taken and the permit of such autos should be cancelled and a case should be registered,” Reddy said in his letter to the Transport Commissioner, on June 28.

“For example: On June 18, 2025, Rapido Auto App charged Rs. 100.89 per km, while Auto O App charged Rs. 184.19 for a 4 km journey. This kind of daylight robbery from the public is unforgivable, strict action should be taken urgently.”

There have been complaints from commuters about rising auto fares. The meter fare is fixed at Rs 30 for the first 1.9 km, and Rs 15 for every additional kilometre.

The Minister noted that although the Transport department has already registered cases against auto drivers for refusing rides and demanding excess fares, complaints from the public continue to pour in.

He has also attached copies of mobile phone screenshots shared by denizens, highlighting instances of overcharging and urged officials to take appropriate action.

“It has been directed to immediately formulate an effective action plan to protect the interest of the public and take stern action against the guilty auto drivers/owners,” he added.
