Bengaluru: Woman raped in Cubbon Park; two security guards held

November 12, 2015 by Nasheman

rape

Bengaluru: A 35-year-old woman was allegedly raped by two security guards at Cubbon Park here last night, police said today.

Police said they have arrested both the security guards in connection with the incident.

The woman hailing from Tumkuru had come to the city to take membership in a tennis club functioning at the sprawling Cubbon Park when the incident occurred, they said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Sandeep Patil said “The incident came to light when an Assistant Sub-Inspector who was on rounds noticed the woman sitting near Siddalingaiah Circle around 2.30 AM and questioned her.”

He said, “Immediately she was brought to the Cubbon Park Police Station and a detailed statement taken from her.”

The woman had come to the club late afternoon. Though some workers told her there was none in the club and asked her to come today, she decided to stay back near by.

At about 9:30 PM noticing her alone in the park two security guards approached her, the DCP said.

When she asked them to help her make her exit from the park as she did not know the way, the guards under the pretext of helping her had taken her to a secluded place and allegedly raped her.

Patil said, “A case has been registered last night. Guards have been detained, detailed investigation is going on and medical examination of victim and two accused is also being done.”

He said a case has been booked under Indian Penal Code section 376 (punishment for rape).

Modi arrives in Britain for three-day visit

November 12, 2015 by Nasheman

Modi-Britain

London: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in London on Thursday for a three-day visit to Britain that will see India and Britain sign a number of pacts on mutual investments and defence cooperation.

Modi, wearing a dark coat, stepped out of the aircraft with folded ‘namaste’.

In a series of pre-departure Facebook posts, Modi said: “My visit is aimed at strengthening cooperation with a traditional friend that is not only a major economic partner of India but also one of the leading economic players of the world.”

Modi’s visit to Britain is the first bilateral visit by an Indian prime minister in nine years after Manmohan Singh’s visit in 2006. Singh visited Britain in 2009 to attend the G-20 summit.

“UK is one of the fastest growing G-7 economies and is home to a strong financial services sector,” Modi stated. “I see immense scope for our economic and trade relations to improve and this will benefit both our economies,” he added.

On November 14, Modi will leave for Turkey to attend the annual G-20 summit.

Was Shah Rukh Khan targeted by ED for speaking on intolerance, asks Congress

November 12, 2015 by Nasheman

SHAHRUKH khan

New Delhi: The Congress on Thursday questioned if Shah Rukh Khan had faced the wrath of Enforcement Directorate (ED) because he spoke up on the issue of intolerance.

On Wednesday, the ED had questioned Khan over alleged violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

“A noted film star like Shah Rukh Khan is grilled for four hours… Whether he is facing wrath for speaking out or whether something wrong has been done by him,” chief spokesperson of Congress Randeep Surjewala said.

He said that suspicions on this score arose as the Enforcement Directorate and the CBI have nowadays become “instruments of vendetta”.

Citing an instance, Surjewala alleged that Himachal Pradesh chief minister Virbhadra Singh, who is the senior-most chief minister in the country, faced ED raid on the day of his daughter’s marriage.

The Enforcement Directorate has recorded the statement of Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan in a matter of alleged irregularities in the sale ofSHARES of Knight Riders Sports Pvt Ltd (KRSPL) to a Mauritius-based company.

The case, dating back to 2008-09, pertains to the share sale of KRSPL, owned by Khan’s Red Chillies along with Juhi Chawla and her husband, to a Mauritius-based company owned by Chawla’s husband Jay Mehta.

ED is probing allegations that shares sold to the Jay Mehta-owned Sea Island INVESTMENTS were undervalued by eight to nine times. Khan had faced ED once in 2011 when he was questioned about alleged foreign exchange violation of around Rs 100 crore.

Girish Karnad will be killed like Kalburgi, threatens anonymous Twitter account

November 12, 2015 by Nasheman

girish-karnad

Bengaluru: Actor and Jnanpith awardee, Girish Karnad received death threat for suggesting Bengaluru international airport should be named after Tipu Sultan.

“Girish Karnad will meet the same end like kalburgi if he enrages kannadigas by replacing in Kempe gouda (sic) with Tipu Sultan.” the tweet, later deleted by the user, read.

“A tweet was posted by someone with the user name Intolerant Chandra…. We are aware of the tweet and action will be taken if necessary and if a complaint is lodged,” the TOI quoted a police officer.

Karnad had given a written complaint on the issue.

Girish Karnad on Wednesday apologised for saying the Bangalore international airport should have been named after Tipu Sultan and not Kempegowda, believed to have founded the city.

Karnad said he had never meant to insult the Vokkaliga icon when he suggested the airport should have been christened after Tipu, the 18th century king of Mysore who died fighting the British. “I have great respect for Kempegowda and I never insulted him. I apologise if my words caused any hurt to anyone.”

Chief minister P.C. Siddaramaiah, who had presided over the Tipu Jayanti programme where Karnad made the controversial suggestion, distanced himself from the remark. “He shouldn’t have made that remark. It is his personal view and there is no question of the government even thinking of changing the airport’s name,” the Congress leader said.

Karnad had justified his view saying Kempegowda was not a freedom fighter like Tipu, angering the Vokkaligas and sparking demonstrations. The community wields immense political clout and accounts for 15 per cent of the state’s six-crore population.

The Vokkaligas have termed Karnad’s remarks an “insult” to Kempegowda. Former deputy chief minister and senior BJP leader R. Ashok, a Vokkaliga, demanded an apology from the actor for making the suggestion at the first state-sponsored Tipu event.

Remembering Abdul Kalam Azad

November 11, 2015 by Nasheman

abul kalam azad

by Ajit Singh Nagra

Abul Kalam Ghulam Mohiyuddin Ahmed, whose pen name was Azad was born on 11 Nov. 1888 in the Darus-Islama quarter of the holy city [Medina]His father was Maulana Muhammad Khairuddin and his mother was the daughter of Sheikh Muhammad Zaherwatri of Bengal. He emerged as the prominent Urdu writer, an outstanding statesman and secular leader, who carved his name in the house of reputation by dint of his diligence and intelligence. He steered the ship of the nation wisely through the stress and storm of the Indian politics during India’s struggle for freedom and sowed the seeds of secularism and patriotism in the minds of his fellow Muslims. He pledged to remain rooted to his motherland as a son of the soil and declined to fall into footsteps of his co-religionist, M.A. Jinnah who demanded separate land for the Muslims by fanning the fire of communal frenzy and religious fanaticism to gain his end and satisfy his narcissistic mentality.

Azad was a precocious child who gained proficiency in knowledge, oratory and mastered Arabic, Persian and urdu language. Being a brilliant student, he finished his final education at sixteen.

Maulana Azad was a profound theologian, keen intellectual, powerful writer, prolific publicist, a persuasive and eloquent orator and a sober politician. He is ranked as the finest writer of urdu who exhibited felicityof expression with profoundity of thought.

Azad was a devout and proud Muslim and was well-versed with Islamic theology.In1908, Azad visited the Muslim countries such as Egypt, Syria, Palestine and Iraq.Jamaluddin Afghani inspired him in the beginning but he became reformist. While he was interned at Ranchi, he wrote a book on Quran and laid stress upon spiritual and moral aspects of religion. In his opinion, unity of brotherhood, unity of God andunity of religions constitute the message of Quran. He confined himself to writing articles for his paper’Al Hilal’ [crescent] which he started in 1912. Then he came under the influence of Mahatma Gandhi and experienced a sea change in his ideology.

Soon after his release from Ranchi jail,he met Mahatma Gandhi on 18 Jan.1920 and this moment became a watershed in his life.In his political life, Azad travelled on three different paths, the path of exclusive patriotism, and pan -Islamism[1906-20] the path of Muslim patriotism and Indian Nationalism[1920-23] and the path of secularist democratic nationalism[1923-58]He had the distinction of becoming the youngest President of the congress in 1923at 34and also held the record of the longest term as the president of the congress from 1940 to 1946.On behalf of the congress, he negotiated with the cripps Mission in 1942, at the Simla conference in1945 and with the cabinet Mission in 1946.Being a nationalist, Azad remained in jail for eleven years.

Azad was a consistent champion of Hindu-Muslim unity and did not want partition of the country and advocated unity in diversity. As a student of history, he pointed out that the Hindus and the Muslims had common ancestors and shared common traditions and history. He was opposed to sectarian nationalism preached by the Muslim League. He also preached the policy of non-violence. Azad was a staunch opponent of partition and wistfully thought that partition exists on the map of the country and not in the hearts of the people and it will be a short-lived division.

Azad penned down his reminiscences and reaction in his controversial book” India Wins Freedom” fully published in 1988 in which Sardar Patel was dubbed as a communalist. He interpreted the historical events in the form of his personal idiosyncracies and predilections and blamed Pt. Nehru, Jinnah and Patel for accepting partition of the country. He pointed out at partial culpability of congress leaders in averting the creation of Pakistan. He was a humanist and educator but his gentle voice fell upon the deaf ears of rabble rousers who favoured partition of the country.Azad was ambitious and spurned the crown. He was an apostle of national unity , composite culture and communal harmony.

Azad was an intellectual of high order and his mental vision was encyclopaedic. His ”Ghubar-e- Khatir”is the tour de force of a literary craftsman. He helped in forming the foreign policy of India. Azad did commendable work as the Minister of Education and Research. He was responsible for the publication of an authoritative history of thefreedom struggle compiled for the national archives under the direction of Dr. Tara Chand. He was instrumental in appointing the University Education Commission in 1948 and the Secondary Education commission in 1952 and various institutions and commissions e.g.Kharakpur institute of higher Technology, The university Grant commission and three national academics-The depaetment of Archives, Archaeology and Anthropology were developed and the Indian Council of Cultural Relations to foster goodwill between India and Pakistan and for communal harmony. He founded the India Council of scientific and Industrial Research. Maulana had the ability to inspire millions with his power of pen and voice .He was a devout Muslim by faith but his mind was free from narrow cosidersatios of religion. He was a farsighted statesman quite progressive in his outlook and modern in his thinking. He was called Chinese man and Superman. This illustrious son of mother India left this mortal world in Delhi on22Feb.1958.

Afghans protest decapitations of ethnic Hazara by ISIL

November 11, 2015 by Nasheman

Thousands demonstrate for security after seven people beheaded – including women and children – allegedly by ISIL.

by Shereena Qazi

Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of Afghanistan’s capital on Wednesday with coffins carrying the bodies of seven ethnic Hazara demanding justice after their beheadings.

The protests included women and men from Afghanistan’s different ethnic groups – Pashtun, Tajik, Uzbek, and Hazara – as they marched on the Presidential Palace to urge the government to take action against rising violence against Afghan civilians.

According to Afghan officials, the Hazara hostages were captured by ISIL fighters more than a month ago and held in Arghandab district of Zabul province.

Three women, two children, and two men had been beheaded with razor wire, officials said. Their bodies were discovered by the Taliban who handed them over to tribal elders on Saturday in Ghazni province, from where they were abducted.

“We will continue to fight for the safety of our family,” civil rights activist Shahzaman Hashemi told Al Jazeera. “This is our right to feel safe. Whatever happened to those women and children can happen to us as well.”

The Afghan government announced a national day of mourning on Wednesday over the killings.

‘Had enough’

Maryam Jamal, who also took part in the march, said it was important to pressure the government to halt the escalating violence in the country. “They’ve now started killing women and children,” she said.

“It can be me tomorrow, can be my children. This protest is historic and we are adamant to not back off until something is done about this. We’ve had enough.”

Kabul Police Chief Abdul Rahman Rahimi told Al Jazeera security officers had taken control of the protest area and were making sure no one gets hurt during the demonstrations.

“There are thousands of people here and the number is expected to increase. People from far off places have come to Kabul to take part in the protest today,” Rahimi said. “We are making sure the protest doesn’t get violent. So far people are protesting peacefully.”

Demonstrators chanted “death to Islamic State” on Tuesday in Ghazni province as a van carried the coffins covered by Afghan flags. Ghazni police blamed the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in Afghanistan for the grisly killings.

“We want justice not just for them but for the thousands of other innocent people who are brutally killed this way, almost every day,” protester Ismail Khanjar told Al Jazeera.

“We don’t care if they were Shia Muslims or not. For us they are human and they were killed in the most brutal way. What was their fault?”

The bodies were then transported from Ghazni city to Kabul, 130km away, for Wednesday’s demonstration.

The Hazara have long suffered oppression and persecution in Afghanistan. During the 1990s, thousands were killed by al-Qaeda and Taliban fighters.

Sayed Zafar Hashemi, deputy spokesman for President Ashraf Ghani, told Al Jazeera security threats affect the entire nation, and not just specific communities.

“We are doing everything we can to help protect our people,” he said.

Afghanistan has several ethnic groups including Tajiks, Hazaras, Uzbeks and Turkmen – mainly in the north and west – as well as Pashtun, located primarily in the south and east.

ISIL emerged in Afghanistan last year.

A Taliban splinter group calling itself the High Council of Afghanistan Islamic Emirate announced last week it had elected its own leader, defying new Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mansoor.

Insecurity continues to grip Afghanistan after the withdrawal of international forces in recent years. Violent clashes between two armed groups in southern Afghanistan erupted on Sunday, resulting in the death of at least 50 fighters from both sides.

Over 2,000 war veterans return medals

November 11, 2015 by Nasheman

war veterans return medals

New Delhi: Over 2,000 ex-servicemen protesting against the government’s “diluted” one-pension-one rank scheme on Tuesday returned their medals in Delhi, Haryana and Punjab, the organizations spearheading the movement claimed on Tuesday as they hit back at Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar for his “unlike soldiers behaviour” remark aimed at them.

Colonel (retd) Anil Kaul, spokesman of the protesters in Delhi, said 2,000 ex-servicemen’s medals were deposited at the district collector’s office.

“The veterans had threatened to leave the medals on the road if we didn’t accept it. Hence, we accepted those,” District Collector Sanjay Kumar told reporters.

In Chandigarh, Brigadier Kiran Krishan (retd), Convener for North Haryana of Indian Ex-Servicemen Movement (IESM), a constituent of United Front of Ex-Servicemen that had led the nation-wide protest for OROP at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, said that more than 150 war veterans returned over 150 medals which were handed over to the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Panchkula.

Kaul said ex-servicemen from Ambala, Chandigarh, Moga, Jalandhar and Gurdaspur returned their medals today while those from Mumbai, Pune, Vadodara and Bangalore will follow the suit.

“Our people from Mumbai, Pune, Vadodara and Bangalore will return their medals next. By the way, this is just the trailer,” he added.

The veterans claimed over 20,000 of them have returned medals since their protest began in 2008 to press for OROP.

Kaul reacted sharply to Parrikar’s statement that the war veterans’ protest against OROP notification is “unlike that of a soldier” and said the Parrikar’s behaviour “too doesn’t behove that of a Defence Minister.

Dismissing Parrikar’s remarks that the protesters were being “misguided” and that the OROP notification issued on Saturday has been his “achievement”, the agitators shot back at the BJP leader asking him to learn English to know meanings of the two words and asked him not to “lie” to his soldiers seeking their due rights.

“He says our behaviour is unlike that of a soldier. But we feel Parrikar’s behaviour is unlike that of a Defence Minister. We have been seeking our due to rights for past 149 days. But government has found no time to listen to us.

“Hence, we have been impelled to agitate Mr Parrikar. Your notification is not what we have been talking about. Therefore, we are returning medals,” Kaul said.

Ranji Trophy: Karnataka pull off 2nd outright Ranji win against Odisha

November 11, 2015 by Nasheman

stuart-binny

Mysuru: Karnataka registered their second outright win, beating Odisha by an innings and 64 runs on the fourth and final day of their Group A Ranji Trophy match.

With this win Karnataka secured seven points, and are among the top contenders to qualify for the knockout stage with 21 points to their credit.

Stuart Binny and Shreyas Gopal, ably supported by Vinay Kumar, helped Karnataka skittle out Odisha for 104 runs in their second innings under 37 overs. Binny claimed four wickets for 34 runs and Gopal bagged three wickets for 43 runs, while Kumar ended with two for seven off seven overs and Udit Patel picked up one wicket. Batting first, Odisha put on 232 all out in their first innings with Govinda Poddar scoring 153 runs after he had smashed 15 boundaries and a six off 230 balls.

In reply, Karnataka declared their first innings at 400 for nine after India discard Robin Uthappa scored his second century of the season with a superb 148 runs. He had scored his first ton against Rajasthan in the previous match. Karnataka opener Mayank Agarwal and Karun Nair, also came good with their bat, scoring 78 and 73 runs, respectively.

Nair and Uthappa took the game away from Odisha’s hands when they stitched a 169-run partnership for fourth wicket and helped hosts post 168-run first innings lead. Resuming at the overnight score of zero for one, Odisha started on a disastrous note, losing first innings centurion Poddar, who was caught by Abhishek Reddy off Kumar for seven. Binny turned the tide completely in Karnataka’s favour after he claimed two wickets in consecutive deliveries, first he sent back Nataraj Behera (19) and then Ranjit Singh for a naught.

After the fall of Singh, no batsman held the crease and with Karnataka bowlers, especially Binny and Gopal, wrecking havoc.
Anurag Sarangi was the top scorer for Odisha with 44 runs with six boundaries, scored off 75 balls. To the dismay of Odisha, they lost four batsmen — Rajesh Dhuper, Singh, Biplab Samanataray and Basant Mohanty — without opening an account.

New Delhi: Top ULFA leader Anup Chetia was today handed over to the CBI by the Bangladesh government, according to reports.

A Bangladesh court sentenced the militant leader to seven years in prison. The Indian government could not extradite him earlier due to the lack of an extradition treaty between India and Bangladesh. He had sought political asylum in Bangladesh thrice in 2005, 2008 and in 2011.Despite the expiry of his term, Chetia was in jail under a 2003 High Court directive asking authorities to keep him in safe custody until a decision was taken on his asylum plea.

Thirty Shia Muslims kidnapped in Afghanistan

November 11, 2015 by Nasheman

Men from minority Hazara group were travelling by bus through central Afghanistan when masked gunmen took them away.

Afghanistan Hazara

by Al Jazeera

Masked gunmen have abducted 30 Shia Muslim men who were travelling by bus through central Afghanistan, according to local authorities.

The men, members of the minority Hazara ethnic group, were taken on Monday evening in Zabul province, on the road between the western city of Herat and Kabul.

Hazara Shia Muslims are often the target of sectarian violence at the hands of Sunni Muslim groups in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

“Our driver saw a group of masked men in Afghan army uniform signalling him and he thought they were soldiers so he stopped,” said Nasir Ahmad, an official with the Ghazni Paima bus company, told AFP news agency.

“The gunmen took 30 Hazaras away with them.”

Ahmad said the kidnappers took only the men on the two buses and released the women and children travelling with them.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the abductions, but kidnappings for ransom by bandits, local militias and the Taliban are common in Afghanistan.

Interior ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said the police were “doing everything to ensure their safe release”.
