Bomb threats at Delhi Secretariat Maulana Azad Medical Collage UCMS declared hoax

September 10, 2025 by Nasheman

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister’s Secretariat, Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) and University College of Medical Science (UCMS) on Tuesday morning received bomb threats, which were later declared hoax, officials said.

The police said the threats mentioned that RDX, having a one-km blast radius, were planted in the three sites.

Immediate and coordinated action was taken under standard operating procedures (SOPs), with bomb detection and disposal teams (BDDT) pressed into service at the three sites. After thorough checking the bomb threats were declared hoax, they said.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Prashant Gautam said, “Around 11 am, information was received from UCMS at GTB Hospital that they have received an email regarding the presence of a bomb in the collage premises.”

Immediately, in accordance with the SOP, college was vacated without creating any panic, he said.

The DCP added that the Bomb Dog Squad (BDS) was called and every corner of the building was checked. At 1.30 pm building was declared as cleared from danger and the threat was found to be hoax.

According to the Delhi Fire Service (DFS), a separate call regarding the threat was also received, following which multiple fire tenders were rushed to the spot as a precautionary measure.

DCP (Central) Nidhin Valsan, in a statement, said entire area of MAMC and CM Secretariat was screened. “The email turned out to be hoax. Legal action will be taken.”

“Senior officers, including additional DCP (central), ACP Kamla Market and SHO IP Estate, were present at the Secretariat overseeing anti-sabotage checks. At MAMC, the exercise was being supervised by the additional traffic officer (ATO) of IP Estate police station,” he said.

Appropriate measures were taken to ensure the safety and security of people present at both locations. There is no cause for panic, the DCP (Central) said.

The officer further said a team of the cyber police station is examining the origin of the email. The initial assessment has revealed similarities with previous hoax threat emails.

“Preliminary findings indicate the message may have actually been intended for a location in another state. However, we are treating it with utmost seriousness and all SOPs are being followed,” he added.

UCMS College officials said they received a threat email this morning and informed the police. Authorities thoroughly checked every corner of the college building, but didn’t find anything suspicious and vacated the premises around 3 pm.

Earlier, the collage issued a notice stating: “This is to share that the college has received an email regarding bomb threat in college this afternoon. The college is taking all precautionary measures for the safety in this regard. We are therefore, suspending, all the classes for students in the college building; and the students and staff are requested to vacate the college building to ensure safety of all.

According to the police, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), traffic police and Special Cell assisted in the quick response. Entry and exit points were secured and access was restricted during the verification exercise.

All security drills were carried out with due diligence. Such threat emails, even if they are hoaxes, cannot be taken lightly, an officer said.

This incident follows a spate of hoax threat emails received in several schools and educational institutes in recent months, prompting heightened vigilance among security agencies.

Actor Aishwarya Rai urges Delhi HC to restrain illegal use of name, image
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

New Delhi: Bollywood actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan on Tuesday urged the Delhi High Court to protect her personality rights and restrain online platforms from illegally using her name, images and AI-generated pornographic content.

Justice Tejas Karia orally hinted that he would pass an ad-interim order cautioning the defendants.

The suit related to misappropriation of various aspects of her personality, including her name, image, likeness, persona and voice, and the defendants are using them for their own commercial gain without obtaining her consent.

The defendants including several unidentified parties are making use of artificial intelligence and deepfake technology by morphing/superimposing the face of plaintiff to create distasteful videos and images of the plaintiff which are sexually explicit the plea said.

Senior advocate Sandeep Sethi, appearing for Rai, said the actor wanted to enforce her publicity and personality rights, pointing out some completely unreal intimate photographs were being circulated online.

There can be no right in their favour to use her images, likeness or persona. A gentleman is collecting money merely by putting my name and face Sethi argued.

Sethi claimed T-shirts and mugs with his client’s pictures were being sold illegally.

Rai was also represented through advocates Pravin Anand, Ameet Naik and Dhruv Anand.

The high court then posted the matter on November 7 before the court’s joint registrar and the court on January 15, 2026, for further proceedings.

The right to publicity, popularly known as personality rights, is the right to protect, control, and profit from one’s image, name, or likeness.

The different aspects of Rai’s personality which she sought to be protected include her name, voice, image, unique style of dialogue delivery and signature.

The plea said misappropriation of any attribute of the plaintiff’s persona without her express permission for a commercial purpose is liable to be restrained on the basis of the traditional conception of publicity rights.

Villagers lock forest officials inside cage set for Tiger capture in Gundlupet

September 10, 2025 by Nasheman

Chamrajnagar: An unusual incident was reported from Bommalapura village in Gundlupet taluk, where angry villagers locked forest officials inside an iron cage that had been set up to trap a tiger.

For the past few days, people living in Bommalapura and other villages along the Bandipur forest boundary have been troubled by the presence of a tiger in the area. Villagers had repeatedly appealed to the Bandipur National Park authorities and tiger reserve staff to capture the animal, citing safety concerns.

Acting on these complaints, the forest department had placed a cage in Bommalapura to capture the tiger. However, the big cat did not fall into the trap, leaving the villagers frustrated.

On Friday, when forest officials visited the village again, the angry residents decided to lock them inside the very cage meant for the tiger. Reports say the officials were taken aback and pleaded with the villagers to release them.

K’taka Cong MLA family purchased foreign travel tickets using betting funds: ED

K'taka Cong MLA, family purchased foreign travel tickets using betting funds: ED

New Delhi: Arrested Karnataka Congress MLA K C Veerendra, his family members and associates booked international travel tickets worth crores of rupees and these were financed through a network of mule accounts linked to proceeds from online betting websites, the Enforcement Directorate alleged on Tuesday.

The evidence suggests that the funds used for these high-value transactions were diverted from illicit online activities and funnelled through multiple intermediary accounts to obscure their origin the federal probe agency claimed in a statement.

Veerendra is being investigated as the prime accused” in a money laundering case linked to alleged cheating of public through illegal online betting.

The 50-year-old Chitradurga legislator was arrested late last month by the ED from Sikkim where he had gone on a business trip to lease a casino.

His legal team has told the courts that the charges made by the ED against him were baseless.

The ED also conducted fresh searches in this case on September 6 at Challakere (Chitradurga district) and seized a variety of gold articles worth a total Rs 24 crore.

This included 24-carat gold bullion weighing 21.43 kg, 11 units of gold coated silver bars weighing 10.98 kg and about 1 kg gold jewellery.

The agency did not specify from whose premises these gold items were seized by it under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

“After considering this seizure, cumulative seizure of proceeds of crime in this case has crossed Rs 100 crore as on date,” the agency said.

The ED has accused the MLA of “running” several online betting sites in the name of King567, Raja567, Lion567, Play567, Playwin567, etc. It has been claimed that several payment gateways were used for routing payments collected through these websites.

“ED investigation revealed that K C Veerendra his family members and associates have booked several international travel tickets worth crores of rupees, financed through a network of mule accounts linked to proceeds from online betting websites,” it alleged.

A number of luxury vehicles, allegedly used by Veerendra and his family, have been found by the ED during the multiple rounds of searches conducted by it in this case.

A Mercedes Benz registered in the name of ABH Infrastructures of Anil Gowda and a Range Rover funded” by a person named Gulshan Khattar of Fonepaisa were also found, the ED said.

Gowda has challenged the ED summons issued to him in this case before the Karnataka High Court stating the notice was a violation of his rights as a professional advocate of Veerendra.

The ED had contended before the high court that it summoned Gowda not in his capacity as a lawyer but because of his business involvement in the case.

The court has reserved its order while grating interim protection to Gowda– brother of Kusuma H, the losing Congress candidate from the R R Nagar assembly seat during the 2023 assembly polls– from any coercive ED action against him.

PM Modi says he looks forward to speaking with Trump

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday reacted warmly to US President Donald Trump’s positive assessment of trade talks between the two countries, expressing confidence that the ongoing negotiations will pave the way for unlocking the limitless potential of the partnership between them.

I am also looking forward to speaking with President Trump. We will work together to secure a brighter, more prosperous future for both our people.

Modi’s comments came hours after Trump said he feels certain that there will be no difficulty for the two countries to come to a successful conclusion in trade talks and he looks forward to speaking with his very good friend Modi in the coming weeks.

After weeks of strain in ties over Trump’s tough rhetoric following his decision to impose 50 per cent tariff on India the relations between the two countries have shown signs of a thaw of late.

This is the second time of late when Trump has spoken highly of his country’s ties with India and mixed it with his praise of Modi who has positively reacted to his comments.

August 27, 2025 by Nasheman

Jammu: The death toll in the Vaishno Devi landslide has gone up to 32, officials said on Wednesday, a day after disaster struck the route on the hilltop shrine in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district.

At least 20 people were injured in the landslide triggered by heavy, relentless rain, the officials said.

Ashwin announces retirement from IPL, says time to become explorer of other leagues
Veteran India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin

Chennai: Veteran India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on Wednesday announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League, bringing the curtains down on a 16-year-long association with the tournament within months of calling it quits from international cricket.

Ashwin made the announcement through a social media post.

“They say every ending will have a new start, my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today,” Ashwin posted on X,

“Would like to thank all the franchisees for all the wonderful memories and relationships over the years and most importantly the IPL and the BCCI for what they have given me until now. Look forward to enjoying and making the most of what’s ahead of me,” he added.

The 38-year-old had retired from international cricket in December last year during the tour of Australia after a decorated career that saw him become India’s second-highest wicket-taker (537) in Tests behind Anil Kumble (619).

In the IPL, he was one of the brightest minds to play the game, making his debut for Chennai Super Kings in 2009. His last appearance too came in the yellow jersey in IPL 2025, after rejoining CSK for Rs 9.75 crore following a decade-long gap.

Overall, he featured in 221 IPL matches, taking 187 wickets at an average of 30.22 with best figures of 4/34. With the bat, he scored 833 runs with a highest of 50 and an average of 13.02.

Ashwin was an integral member of CSK’s title-winning campaigns in 2010 and 2011 and also turned out for the now defunct Rising Pune Supergiant, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals during his career in the league.

First-time voter Minta Devi shown as 124 years old in Bihar electoral rolls

'EC made me grandma': First-time voter Minta Devi shown as 124 years old in Bihar electoral rolls
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other INDIA bloc members seen wearing T-shirts featuring the name Minta Devi

Patna: The Election Commission has made me a grandma, said Minta Devi, suppressing a laugh, on a day opposition MPs led by Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra staged a demonstration in the national capital with her name and photo printed on their shirts.

If the draft electoral rolls in Bihar were to be believed, the “first time” voter, at “124 years”, could well be the oldest in the state, where more than 7 crore electors will be exercising their franchise in a couple of months.

“How can I be blamed for the goof-up? I had filled up my enumeration form online, after having waited in vain for a visit by the booth-level officer,” said the 35-year-old, whose name is now trending on social media.

However, the Siwan district administration has issued a statement, claiming that the would-be voter of the Daraunda assembly segment has been contacted and remedial steps were taken well before the anomaly made headlines.

According to a statement issued by the collectorate of Siwan, “An application was obtained from Minta Devi on August 10 for rectifying the error, to which her attention was drawn by the BLO. It will be dealt with during the claims and objections phase (of special intensive revision of electoral rolls)”.

The matter has come to light at a time when parties opposed to the ruling NDA are assailing the special intensive revision (SIR), in the Parliament as well as the Supreme Court.

Minta Devi, however, is enjoying a good laugh.

“I am thrilled that, finally, at the age of 35, I may get a chance to cast my vote. Many polls have passed since I became eligible but somehow my name never made it to the voters’ list. If the EC has made me a grandma (daadi bana diya) in the process, it is fine with me. I have nothing to fear. I had stated my year of birth as 1990, the same as in my Aadhar card. I cannot help it if in the draft rolls 1990 has been made 1900,” she told reporters.

Meanwhile, social media was left abuzz with users raising doubts over two centenarians, both women, figuring in the voters’ list for another assembly constituency.

The election officials were left coming out with statements asserting that Farzana Khatun and Asha Devi, both voters of Pirpainti assembly segment in Bhagalpur district, were, in fact, 120 years old.

The EC, however, did not respond to the claim, in a section of the media that the two centenarians were also registered as “first-time voters”.
