Lok Sabha elections not fought on level playing field alleges Rahul Gandhi

Lok Sabha elections not fought on level playing field, alleges Rahul Gandhi
Rahul Gandhi

Washington: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has alleged the general elections in India this summer were not fought on a level playing field, asserting that the polls have destroyed the idea of Modi.

The Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, who is currently on a four-day visit to the United States, made the remarks at the prestigious Georgetown University here on Monday.

Addressing the event, Gandhi said that the ruling coalition had collapsed and was broken “right down the middle”.

“It’s not just the prime minister, it’s deeper than that. What has happened in India is that the coalition that brought Mr (Narendra) Modi to power has collapsed. It’s broken right down the middle,” Gandhi said.

“So you’ll see in these elections that they will struggle. Because the basic idea that Mr Modi is running a government for the people of India is gone,” he added.

Alleging that the Lok Sabha elections were not fought on the same footing, Gandhi said, “I don’t see it as a free election. I see it as a heavily controlled election.”

“I don’t believe that in a fair election, the BJP would come anywhere near 240 seats. I would be surprised,” he said, asserting that the party had a “huge financial advantage”.

“The Election Commission was doing what they wanted. The entire campaign was structured so that Mr Modi could carry out his agenda across the country, with different designs for different states,” Gandhi claimed.

“The Congress party fought the elections with their bank accounts frozen and has basically destroyed the idea of Modi. You can see it because when you see the prime minister now in Parliament…he is psychologically trapped, and he basically cannot come to terms, he cannot understand how this has happened,” he said.

Responding to a question, Gandhi said that halfway through the campaign, Prime Minister Modi didn’t think he would get anywhere near 300 or 400 seats.

“I think early on he realised that this thing’s going wrong. We were getting inputs from regular sources…It was pretty clear that they were in trouble,” he said.

“So, there was this internal thing going on in the prime minister that I could see. And psychologically, how is this now happening? Because he’s a person, as you know, he was in Gujarat for many years, never faced political adversity, then prime minister of India. Suddenly, this idea started to crack,” Gandhi said.

“We knew. When he said that I speak directly to God, we knew that we had actually blown him apart. And that the psychology had gone. So people think that, well, this was the prime minister sort of saying that, look, ‘I’m special, I’m unique, and I talk to God’. But that’s not how we saw it. Internally, we saw it as a psychological collapse, what happened here? How is this thing not working?” he said.

“Now that idea has been replaced,” he said.

Gandhi, who arrived in the US on Saturday, interacted with members of the Indian diaspora and youths in Dallas, Texas. He also plans to meet lawmakers and senior officials of the US government in Washington DC.

K’taka minister urged to make mandatory for govt doctors to write prescriptions in Kannada

K'taka minister urged to make mandatory for govt doctors to write prescriptions in Kannada
KDA chairperson Purushotham Bilimale

Bengaluru: Kannada Development Authority on Monday urged Karnataka Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao to issue an order making it mandatory for doctors working in all government health centres and hospitals to write prescriptions in the state’s official language.

KDA chairperson Purushotham Bilimale also suggested felicitating doctors every year on Doctors’ Day at taluk, district and state-level in recognition of their love for Kannada and “their activities in favour of the language.” In a letter to Rao, Bilimale asked the minister to create an atmosphere where Kannada-loving doctors working in private hospitals and their heads too are encouraged to use the language.

“This will be of great help in the progress of Kannada language, and I hereby request you to pay attention in this regard,” he said in the letter.

Noting that recently during an official visit to Raichur he had motivated government doctors to write prescriptions in Kannada, and had directed the Deputy Commissioner there to issue necessary instructions in this regard, the KDA chief said, “After reading about it in the media, hundreds of doctors voluntarily have expressed to me that they will start writing prescriptions in Kannada to save the language.” He said several of them have even shared with him prescriptions written by them in Kannada.

“If government doctors working in health centres, taluk and district hospitals across the state give priority to Kannada while writing prescriptions, it will be a major step towards protecting Kannada identity,” Bilimale said, adding that if it is not made mandatory, expected progress cannot be achieved in its implementation. The state government’s strong stand will play a key role in this.

Murderer works as government officer in UP for 6 years before conviction by court

September 10, 2024 by Nasheman

Lucknow: In a shocking incident, an enquiry by UP irrigation department about a 6-year experienced senior assistant missing work led to the discovery of his murder conviction 11 years ago, Times of India reported on September 9.

The convict Anoop Dubey, who is in his mid-30s now, had been arrested for the murder of a youth named Devendra Singh Tomar of Nainagarh in 2013, along with Gaurav Jha, Kapil Sharma and Akash. The gang, who wanted to kill Devendra for ‘arrogant behavior’, had taken the victim to a secluded spot in Babina near Jhansi in the pretext of a picnic. They had shot him dead and burnt his body.

When Lakhan Singh Tomar, the victim’s father, had confronted them about his missing son, they had told him about the murder and had proceeded to issue death threats, if he told anyone. Despite the threats, Tomar had filed a murder case against all four on May 17, 2013 which had let to their arrest. However, chief engineer Mithlesh Dubey, the accused’s father, had succeeded in securing his bail six months later.

When his father died in 2018, Dubey had secured a job in the UP irrigations department on compassionate grounds. Despite stringent background checks, including mandatory police verification and character certificate of any candidate applying for a government post, no criminal history of Dubey had allegedly come out inspite of there being an active murder trial against him.

Dubey went on to work till August 13, this year, completing 6 years of service. On August 14, the day of verdict in his case, he was on leave to his duty at the irrigation department. Jhansi court convicted him and other three accused in Tomar murder case and sentenced them to life, on that day.

When he didn’t return to work, the blissfully ignorant department had initiated an enquiry to trace him which had revealed his court conviction. The case has led many to question the credibility and efficiency of the recruitment process in the government agencies which couldn’t prevent an accused murderer from securing a job and settling comfortably for over six years in public service.

The case draws parallel with that of Bitty Mohanty who was jailed for seven years in 2006 for raping a German national. Eight months later, while on a 15-days parole to visit his sick mother in Cuttack, Odisha, he escaped the clutches of law and went missing. His father B B Mohanty, an IPS officer, had been charged with helping his son abscond, an accusation which the former persistently refused. He was reinstated to service in 2009 and continued to serve in the force till his retirement in 2012.

Years of police work to locate Bitty Mohanty failed until 2013 when he was arrested from a bank in Kannur, Kerala, where he was working under a false name of ‘Raghav Rajan’, a resident of Andhra Pradesh. An anonymous letter sent to the bank revealing the true identity of one of its employees had led to the police tip-off.

Bike-borne gunmen shoot BJP member to death in Patna

Patna: Bike-borne assailants gunned down a BJP member outside a restaurant in the Bihar capital Patna in the early hours of Monday, police said.

The deceased was identified as Munna Sharma who was associated with the BJP for years.

“Munna Sharma was shot at by three unidentified bike-borne armed assailants outside a restaurant when he was waiting for an autorickshaw. The armed men fled the spot after the shooting,” Patna Rural Superintendent of Police Raushan Kumar told reporters.

He succumbed to his injuries in a government hospital.

“Police registered a case and launched a manhunt to nab the gunmen. Forensic experts collected evidence from the spot. Officials are analysing CCTV footage of the area to identify the accused,” he said.

Leader of the opposition in the assembly Tejashwi Yadav of the RJD claimed that the incident showed crime was flourishing under the NDA government in the state.

Union minister Chirag Paswan said it is a matter of serious concern.

GST Council sets up GoM on reduction in GST on health insurance; cuts rate on cancer drugs
Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs, Nirmala Sitharaman chairs the 54th meeting of the GST Council

New Delhi: GST Council headed by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday decided to set up a Group of Ministers (GoM) on reducing tax rate on life and health insurance and cut GST on cancer drugs and namkeens.

Briefing reporters on the outcome of the 54th GST Council meeting, Sitharaman said it has decided to have a Group of Ministers (GoM) to look into the GST rate on life and health insurance.

The GoM will be headed by Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, who is currently heading the panel on GST rate rationalisation.

Sitharaman said that new members would be joining the GoM to look into GST on health insurance.

The GoM will be submitting its report by October end, she said.

The issue of taxation of insurance premiums had figured in Parliament discussions with Opposition members demanding that health and life insurance premiums be exempt from the GST. Even Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari wrote to Sitharaman on the issue.

Sitharaman in her reply to a discussion on the Finance Bill had said that 75 per cent of the GST collected goes to states and the Opposition members should ask their state finance ministers to bring the proposal at the GST Council.

The GST Council in its meeting on Monday also decided to cut tax rates on cancer drugs to 5 per cent from 12 per cent and namkeens from 18 per cent to 12 per cent.

Sitharaman further said that a GoM will also be constituted to deal with the issue concerning compensation cess which will cease after March 2026.

The Council also deliberated on the GoM’s status report on rate rationalisation and online gaming.

The minister further said that a committee of secretaries headed by Additional Secretary (Revenue) will be formed on the IGST which is currently facing a negative balance. It will look into ways to retrieve the money from states.

Uttarakhand signboards row: Civil society group writes to CM over discrimination against Muslims

Uttarakhand signboards row: Civil society group writes to CM over 'discrimination' against Muslims

New Delhi: In the wake of objectionable signboards appearing at the entrances of villages in several areas of Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag, a civil society group comprising several retired civil servants and academics on Monday wrote to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami against alleged discrimination targeting Muslims.

Villagers in several areas of Rudraprayag district have put up signboards at the entrances of their villages, prohibiting the entry of outsiders.

Signboards had been put up in villages such as Sirsi, Rampur-Nyalsu, and others. Initially, the boards stated a ban on “non-Hindus”, but the phrasing was later changed to “ban on outsiders” following police intervention, according to villagers.

The police, however, later said objectionable signboards have been removed.

“The signboards put up at six places in Guptkashi police station area were objectionable and have been withdrawn,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Prabodh Kumar Ghildiyal said. People have been asked to maintain social harmony, he said.

In a letter to Dhami, Citizens for Fraternity said that as concerned citizens of the country they have watched with dismay, news coming out of various places in Uttarakhand of “discrimination against Muslims, many of whom have been residents for decades and owning businesses there”.

The letter is signed by the likes of former chief election commissioner SY Quraishi, former Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, former AMU vice chancellor Zameer Uddin Shah, former MP Shahid Siddiqui and former IRS Syed Mahmood Akhter, among others.

The Constitution does not discriminate on religion, caste or region, the letter said.

It encourages Indians and does not debar them to travel to other states and set up businesses, which provides employment opportunities to local people and contribute towards the economy, the letter to Dhami said.

“It (putting up of signboards) depicts our country in poor light and offers an opportunity to those not amicable to us to criticise us. How can we aspire to be world leaders if such incidents continue and are not nipped in the bud. The perpetrators of hate, irrespective of religion, must to be booked and stringent action taken against them,” the letter said.

“We believe that DMs and SPs in each district should be held accountable if no action is taken, the civil society group said.

Railways accepts Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia’s resignation with immediate effect

Railways accepts Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia's resignation with immediate effect
Wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia

New Delhi: The Railways on Monday accepted the resignations of wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia, officials said.

In separate notices issued on Monday, the Northern Railway said their resignations tendered on September 6 were “accepted by the competent authority with immediate effect.”

Both Punia and Phogat joined the Congress recently. Phogat has been given a party ticket to contest the Haryana assembly polls from the Julana constituency.

The Northern Railway relaxed the provision of three-month notice period in their cases. Speculations were rife that Phogat might not be able to contest the elections in view of the notice period norm.

According to election rules, she needed to get officially relieved from the Railways to be eligible to contest the October 5 polls.

Now, since the Railways has relieved the two Olympians from their service, Phogat can contest the elections.

The NR had earlier issued show cause notices to them after they met Congress leader Rahul Gandhi before joining his party.

It had said the show cause notice was part of the service norm as they were government employees. Following the notices, both resigned from the Railways.
