Kerala actor-politician Mukesh booked for rape on actress plaint

Kerala actor-politician Mukesh booked for rape on actress' plaint
Malayalam actor M Mukesh

Kochi (PTI): A rape case has been registered against prominent Malayalam actor and ruling CPI(M) MLA M Mukesh following a female actor’s allegation that he sexually assaulted her years ago, police said on Thursday.

An FIR under IPC 376 (rape) was registered against the actor at Maradu police station in Kochi city on Wednesday night, a police officer said.

The case was registered under the IPC as the offence allegedly occurred before the new Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita came to force, he said.

This is the third FIR against a high profile Malayalam film personality following allegations of sexual harassment against various directors and actors in the wake of revelations in the Justice K Hema Committee report.

On Wednesday, Thiruvananthapuram museum police had booked actor Sidhique for allegedly raping an actress in a hotel eight years ago.

The first case, under IPC Section 354 (assault or criminal force on woman with intent to outrage her modesty), was against director Ranjith on a complaint by a female actor from West Bengal regarding an incident which occurred in 2009.

She had alleged that the director had touched her inappropriately with sexual intent after inviting her to act in the movie Paleri Manikyam.

Following the allegation by the actor, Ranjith had resigned from his post as chairman of the state-run Kerala Chalachitra Academy.

Sidhique had also resigned as general secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) following the allegations against him.

The Justice Hema Committee was constituted by the Kerala government after the 2017 actress assault case and its report revealed instances of harassment and exploitation of women in the Malayalam cinema industry.

Amidst allegations of sexual harassment and exploitation cropping up against several actors and directors, the state government on August 25 announced the establishment of a seven-member special investigation team to probe them.

Subsequently, more complaints surfaced.

Rahul Gandhi to meet family of minor beaten by police in Katni GRP Station Assault

August 29, 2024 by Nasheman

Katni: A video has emerged showing a 15-year-old boy and his grandmother being brutally beaten by officers inside the Katni Government Railway Police (GRP) station. The incident, which reportedly occurred last year, involved the station in-charge, Aruna Vahane, and other officers. The duo was allegedly assaulted due to suspicion of theft.

In the footage, the boy, identified as Deepraj Vanshkar, and his grandmother, Kusum Vanshkar, are seen being beaten with belts by the police. Deepraj described the incident to reporters, stating, “They held me down, restraining my arms, legs, and even my head. One officer placed his foot on my neck. They beat me up with belts, and my grandmother was also subjected to the same treatment.”

Madhya Pradesh Congress President Jitu Patwari shared the video on X (formerly Twitter), accusing the police of targeting a Dalit family. He criticised the ruling BJP, stating that Dalit oppression has become a tool for political malice.

Katni Superintendent of Police (SP) Abhijit Kumar Ranjan confirmed the incident but noted that the case falls under GRP jurisdiction. He mentioned that authorities are in a “wait and watch” mode regarding further action, as they are verifying the authenticity of the video.

SP Railway Jabalpur later confirmed that the video dates back to October 2023, and stated that the accused had a reward of Rs 10,000 on his head. Some reports suggest that the theft charges are actually against the boy’s father.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is expected to visit Katni on Thursday to meet the family of the victims. Jitu Patwari, who is also expected to join the visit, criticised the BJP-led government in Madhya Pradesh for its alleged failure to protect Dalits and Adivasis.

India’s student suicide rate surpasses population growth rate

August 29, 2024 by Nasheman

New Delhi: Incidents of student suicides in India have grown at an alarming annual rate, surpassing the population growth rate and overall suicide trends, according to a new report.

Based on the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, the “Student suicides: An epidemic sweeping India” report was launched on Wednesday at the Annual IC3 Conference and Expo 2024.

The report pointed out that while the overall suicide numbers increased by 2 per cent annually, student suicides cases surged by 4 per cent, despite a likely “under reporting” of student suicide cases.

“Over the past two decades, student suicides have grown at an alarming annual rate of 4 per cent, double the national average. In 2022, male students constituted 53 pc (per cent) of the total student suicides. Between 2021 and 2022, male student suicides decreased by 6 per cent while female student suicides increased by 7 per cent,” noted the report compiled by IC3 Institute.

“The incidence of student suicides continues to surpass both population growth rates and overall suicide trends. Over the last decade, while the population of

0-24-year-olds reduced from 582 million to 581 million, the number of student suicides increased from 6,654 to 13,044,” it added.

The IC3 Institute is a volunteer-based organisation that provides support to high schools around the world through guidance and training resources for their administrators, teachers and counsellors to help establish and maintain robust career and college counselling departments.

According to the report, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Madhya Pradesh are identified as the states with the highest number of student suicides, together accounting for one-third of the national total.

Southern states and union territories collectively contribute 29 per cent of these cases, while Rajasthan, known for its high-stakes academic environment, ranks 10th, highlighting the intense pressure associated with coaching hubs like Kota.

“The data compiled by the NCRB is based on police-recorded first information reports (FIRs). However, it is important to acknowledge that the actual number of student suicides is likely underreported. This under-reporting can be attributed to several factors, including the social stigma surrounding suicide and the criminalisation of attempted and assisted suicide under Section 309 of the Indian Penal Code.

Although the 2017 Mental Healthcare Act decriminalises suicide attempts for individuals with mental illness, the legacy of criminalisation continues to impact reporting practices, it said.

“Moreover, there are significant data discrepancies due to the lack of a robust data collection system, particularly in rural areas, where reporting is less consistent compared to urban regions,” it said.

Ganesh Kohli, the Founder of the IC3 Movement, said the report serves as a reminder of the urgent need to address mental health challenges within our learning institutions.

“Our educational focus must shift to fostering the competencies of our learners such that it supports their overall well-being, versus pushing them to compete amongst each other.

“It is imperative that we build a systematic, comprehensive, and robust career and college counselling system within each institution, while seamlessly integrating the same within the learning curriculum,” he said.

Additionally, the report noted a dramatic increase in student suicides, with male suicides rising by 50 per cent and female suicides by 61 per cent over the past decade.

“Both genders have experienced an average annual increase of 5 pc (per cent) in the last five years. These alarming statistics underscore the critical need for enhanced counseling infrastructure and a deeper understanding of student aspirations.

“Addressing these gaps is essential for shifting the focus from competitive pressures to nurturing core competencies and well- being, thereby supporting students more effectively and preventing such tragedies,” the report said.

Kerala delegation meets Siddaramaiah requesting him to resume search for missing driver

August 29, 2024 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: A delegation led by Kerala MP M K Raghavan met Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday and requested him to resume search operations to trace the Kozhikode driver and two others who went missing following a massive landslide in Shirur last month.

The incident, which occurred on National Highway 66 on July 16, claimed the lives of eight people.

Raghavan, a Lok Sabha MP from Kozhikode along with Kerala MLA AKM Ashraf and Karwar MLA Satish Krishna Sail met Siddaramaiah in his office today and also submitted a letter to him requesting for permission to bring a dredger for search operations in Gangawali River.

In the letter, the Kerala MP stated,”…recent landslide happened in Shirur has resulted in the missing of three individuals: Arun (from Kerala), Jagannathan and Lokesh. As a representative of Kozhikode, I am profoundly grateful to your government and district administration including police, who has worked day and night with rescue and relief operations effectively coordinating with various state and central agencies to find the missing persons.

“Despite our hard work, we are unable to locate the missing persons. However, we believe that there is still a possibility of finding them with the aid of a dredger. Therefore we respectfully seek your permission to deploy a dredger in Gangawali river to search for the missing individuals,” the letter further stated.

The delegation requested the chief minister to give necessary instructions to the district administration of Karwar to resume the rescue operations immediately using a dredger.

According to officials, the search operations were halted on July 28 due to adverse weather conditions, high river current and other factors. Later, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan wrote a letter to Siddaramaiah requesting him to resume operations to trace the lorry driver from Kozhikode following which the operations were resumed on August 14 but again the search operations were halted due to various factors.

Mehbooba Mufti not to contest J-K polls
PDP president Mehbooba Mufti

Srinagar: PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday said she will not contest the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, pointing out that she would not be able to fulfil her party’s agenda in the union territory set up even if she were to become the chief minister.

“I have been chief minister of a government with the BJP which revoked FIRs against 12,000 persons (in 2016). Can we do that now? I, as the chief minister of a government with (PM) Modi, wrote a letter to separatists to invite them for talks. Can you do that today? I got a ceasefire (implemented) on ground. Can you do that today? If you cannot take back an FIR as chief minister, what does one do with such a post?” she said.

The PDP president was asked if she has had a change of heart on contesting the polls after vice president of arch-rival National Conference Omar Abdullah made a U-turn on his stand of not participating in the polls till Jammu and Kashmir was a union territory.

“Omar himself said that he will have to be at the door of the (lieutenant) governor for transfer of a peon. I am not bothered about the transfer of the peon but can we implement our agenda?” the former chief minister said.

Omar Abdullah, who had vowed not to take part in assembly polls till Jammu and Kashmir remained a union territory, was among 32 candidates named by the party on Tuesday.

The former chief minister will contest polls from Ganderbal where he had won in 2008.

On the alliance between National Conference and Congress for Jammu and Kashmir polls, the PDP president said the two parties have always come together just for the sake of power.

“When we entered into an alliance with Congress in 2002, we had an agenda. We released Syed Ali Geelani from jail. Can you think of doing it today? When we allied with the BJP government in 2014, we had an agenda of alliance in which we had it in writing that Article 370 will not be touched, AFSPA to be revoked, talks with Pakistan and Hurriyat, return of power projects, etc. We had an agenda. However, when Congress and NC form an alliance, it is for power,” she added.

On the possibility of Lok Sabha MP from Baramulla Sheikh Abdul Rashid and senior separatist leader Shabir Ahmad Shah being released from jail ahead of the polls, she said it would be a good development.

She urged the government to consider releasing even those lesser known people who are entitled to bail but have been denied it.

“It is very good. I say that you can put a person in jail but you cannot imprison the ideas. Democracy is a battle of ideas. It has been delayed but Engineer Rashid and Shabir Shah should be released along with all those languishing in jails who are entitled to bail but are not even getting that relief.

“The government has been saying time and again that they want to start a process of reconciliation in Jammu and Kashmir. I tell them to open the doors of the jails and the process of reconciliation will start,” she added

Mehbooba said the PDP is fighting for a bigger cause as it is the only party which implements its agenda after coming to power.

“In 2002, we said we would repeal POTA and we did it. We said we will open (cross-LoC) routes and we did it. We said we will facilitate talks and we did it with the Hurriyat Conference. We follow our agenda and even today our agenda is that there is an issue which cannot be resolved without addressing it. And restoration of Article 370 is also important for resolution of this issue.

“We have always fought alone, based on the support of people and for addressing the problems of the people,” she said.

Later two budding politicians joined the PDP in presence of the PDP president.

Rameshwaram Cafe blast planner calls for nationwide attacks on trains

August 29, 2024 by Nasheman

New Delhi: Indian intelligence agencies are on high alert after a video surfaced showing terrorist Farhatullah Ghori calling on sleeper cells in India to carry out attacks on trains nationwide. Ghori, who is believed to be based in Pakistan, is reportedly responsible for orchestrating the Rameshwaram Cafe blast in Bengaluru earlier this year.

In the video, Ghori outlines methods for carrying out bomb attacks using pressure cookers and also suggests targeting petroleum pipelines and Hindu leaders. He criticises the Indian government’s efforts to weaken sleeper cells through actions by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), but vows to “return and shake the government.”

The Rameshwaram Cafe blast on March 1 injured at least 10 people. The NIA, which took over the investigation, arrested two key suspects, Abdul Matheen Ahmed Taahaa and Mussavir Hussain Shazib, in April. They were allegedly members of an Islamic State (IS) module operating in Karnataka’s Shivamogga region.

Ghori, also known as Abu Sufiyan and Sardar Sahab, has been linked to several high-profile attacks in India, including the 2002 Akshardham Temple attack and the 2005 suicide bombing at the Task Force office in Hyderabad. He is believed to be orchestrating online jihadist recruitment with the support of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

70,000 international student graduates at risk of deportation as Canada tightens policies

August 29, 2024 by Nasheman

New Delhi: Students who came to Canada with aspirations of building a new life are now staging protests across the country against a new federal policy that puts them at risk of getting deported from the country.

Scores of Indian student graduates have led demonstrations in response to the Justin Trudeau government’s decision to limit study permits and reduce permanent residency nominations. Protests have been ongoing for more than three months in front of the legislative assembly in Prince Edward Island (PEI) by international students, and similar demonstrations have occurred in Ontario, Manitoba, and British Columbia.

The new policies aim to cut permanent residency nominations by 25% and restrict study permits. This shift follows significant population growth in Canada, with immigration accounting for about 97% of last year’s population increase.

“I spent the most crucial six years of my life taking many risks to come to Canada,” Mehakdeep Singh, a former international student who is facing deportation, told City News Toronto. Despite studying, working, paying taxes, and earning sufficient Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points, Singh feels the government has taken advantage of students like him. He, along with others who invested their family’s savings in tuition, now face the uncertainty of an expiring work permit and no clear path to permanent residency.

Students and advocacy groups, such as the International Sikh Student Organization, pointed out that these issues stem from broader policy failures rather than the migration of international students, as mentioned by the news outlet. They are urging the federal government to extend work permits and create clear pathways to permanent residency, stressing that international students significantly contribute to the Canadian economy and deserve fair treatment.

Delhi entrepreneur goes viral for creating LinkedIn profile for his 2-year-old son

August 29, 2024 by Nasheman

A Delhi-based entrepreneur, Sivesh Kumar, co-founder and COO of Coffea India, has gained widespread attention for creating a LinkedIn profile for his two-year-old son, Tiger Chauhan. Earlier this week, Kumar set up the profile and has been regularly posting updates.

Tiger Chauhan’s LinkedIn bio states, “I am just a kid, trying to find my place in this world. My father’s friend always says that ‘network is Net worth’. So I am here to network which will help me in my career.”

In his first post on August 26, the young boy shared that he is “here to network” in hopes of securing a spot in a prestigious pre-school. “I turned two today and already started to feel the pressure of this world. With all the talks at home to get me into school. Hmm, the pressure is real and me ‘nanhi si jaan’,” the post reads.

The post continues, “My father Sivesh Kumar’s friend Praveen Kumar Rajbhar always says that ‘Network is Networth’, so I am here to network which will help me (to start with) get into a good pre-school. And further will take one step at a time. I am trying to stay away from social media (as nobody gives me the phone at home), but still for my career will try to log in once a week. Looking for all the help.”

Many LinkedIn users commented on the post, welcoming Tiger to the “real world” and noting, “At just two, you’re already ahead of the game—most of us only realized the importance of networking after several cups of chai and a few gray hairs.” Others shared their best wishes and birthday greetings, with one user saying, “Happy birthday Tiger. I hope you sail through all the struggles of preschool really well! All the very best for the journey ahead. You can do it, master.”
Sivesh Kumar’s second post featured Tiger dressed as Lord Krishna for Janmashtami celebrations.

HDMC launches door-to-door waste collection in Hubballi-Dharwad imposes fines for littering

HDMC launches door-to-door waste collection in Hubballi-Dharwad, imposes fines for littering

Hubballi: The Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) has rolled out a door-to-door waste collection initiative in all wards. The new system, implemented by the Solid Waste Management (SWM) Unit, aims to prevent garbage from piling up on roads, public spaces, and open sites in Hubballi and Dharwad.

The decision to introduce this waste collection system and impose fines follows growing concerns over the public’s negligence in maintaining the city’s cleanliness. Many residents and shop owners have been discarding waste in public areas, despite previous warnings from authorities.

BM Mallikarjun, Executive Engineer of the SWM Unit, noted that while initial efforts to warn the public about littering had been made, some individuals and businesses, particularly paan shops and roadside eateries, ignored these warnings. Consequently, the SWM Unit has now begun imposing fines on those caught littering. Mallikarjun emphasized that the Unit is committed to enforcing these penalties without exceptions.

As part of this enforcement, the SWM Unit has already fined several violators. For instance, residents and a hotelier in Wards 6 and 14 were traced and fined a total of ₹5,400 after waste was found dumped beside the road. Mallikarjun highlighted that the SWM Unit has a fleet of 236 vehicles dedicated to daily waste collection across Hubballi-Dharwad, handling between 450 to 500 tonnes of waste.

To further deter littering, the Corporation has installed 120 CCTV cameras in key residential areas and markets. These cameras will be monitored regularly, and any individual or business caught discarding waste in public places will face penalties. The fine for individual violators is set at ₹100, with higher fines for shop owners. Repeat offenders among shop owners may even face the cancellation of their trade licenses.

Mallikarjun urged citizens to cooperate by waiting for the Corporation’s waste collection vehicles instead of dumping garbage on the streets. He also assured that the SWM Unit would continue its stringent enforcement measures until the practice of littering is eradicated.
