Earlier, the top court had directed the Ministry of Women and Child Development to file a status report detailing steps taken by it to execute the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.

BMW crash case: Shiv Sena sacks key accused Mihir Shah’s father Rajesh Shah as party’s deputy leader

July 12, 2024 by Nasheman

Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who heads the Shiv Sena, on Wednesday sacked Rajesh Shah, whose son Mihir Shah was allegedly involved in the BMW hit-and-run, as the party’s deputy leader.

A one-line notice by Shiv Sena secretary Sanjay More said Rajesh Shah has been relieved from the post of the party’s deputy leader.

Shah, however, continues to be a member of the Shiv Sena.

A BMW car driven by Mihir Shah allegedly rammed into a two-wheeler in the Worli area of south-central Mumbai on Sunday morning, resulting in the death of Kaveri Nakhwa (45), who was riding pillion, while her husband Pradeep survived with injuries, police have said.

According to them, Kaveri Nakhwa was dragged for around 1.5 km by the speeding car before Mihir pulled it over, swapped the seat with his driver, and fled in another vehicle. The driver allegedly ran over her while reversing the BMW.

Mihir Shah was arrested on Tuesday.

Assembly bypoll: Clash in Uttarakhand’s Manglaur leaves several injured

Assembly bypoll: Clash in Uttarakhand's Manglaur leaves several injured

Manglaur: A clash between two groups during the by-election in Uttarakhand’s Manglaur has resulted in several injuries. The Manglaur bypoll was necessitated by the death of sitting BSP MLA Sarwat Karim Ansari in October last year.

Congress candidate Qazi Nizamuddin alleged that miscreants were openly firing, calling it a “murder of Democracy.” He claimed that there were no ambulances or measures to assist the injured.

Other videos also surfaced on X claiming that Muslims were allegedly attacked with sticks before voting.

SP Rural Swapan Kishore Singh, however, stated that the situation was under control and voting was proceeding peacefully. He confirmed that a police force was deployed and there was no confirmation of gunfire.

Voting is currently underway in the Manglaur and Badrinath assembly constituencies, running from 8 am to 6 pm. In Manglaur, the BSP has nominated Ubedur Rehman, son of the late MLA Sarwat Karim Ansari. He faces Congress candidate Qazi Nizamuddin and BJP’s Kartar Singh Bhadana, a prominent Gujjar leader.

In Badrinath, the seat became vacant after Congress MLA Rajendra Bhandari resigned and joined the BJP. The contest involves BJP’s Rajendra Bhandari, Congress newcomer Lakhpat Singh Butola, former CRPF officer Himmat Singh of the Sainik Samaj Party, and journalist Naval Khali as an Independent candidate.

The vote counting for the bypolls is scheduled for July 13.

Rahul Dravid refuses BCCI’s extra ₹2.5 cr bonus over rest of his support staff for T20 WC victory

Rahul Dravid refuses BCCI's extra ₹2.5 cr bonus over rest of his support staff for T20 WC victory

New Delhi: Rahul Dravid, the outgoing head coach of the Indian cricket team, refused an additional ₹2.5 crore as bonus from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Dravid opted to take home only ₹2.5 crore, the same amount as the rest of his support staff.

“Rahul wanted the same bonus money (₹2.5 crore) as the rest of his support staff (bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, fielding coach T Dilip, and batting coach Vikram Rathore). We respect his sentiments,” a BCCI source stated.

According to the BCCI’s distribution formula, each of the 15 playing members of India’s T20 World Cup-winning squad and Dravid were to receive ₹5 crore from the ₹125 crore prize money. The support staff were allocated ₹2.5 crore each, while the selectors and the traveling members of the squad were set to receive ₹1 crore each.

This is not the first time Dravid has upheld such principles. In 2018, as head coach of India’s U-19 World Cup-winning team, he rejected a proposed bonus distribution that would have given him ₹50 lakh while awarding ₹20 lakh each to the support staff and ₹30 lakh each to the players. Dravid insisted on equal bonuses for everyone, resulting in a revised award of ₹25 lakh for each coaching staff member, including himself.

Dravid’s tenure as head coach has been marked by consistency in selection and a deep connection with the players. Despite not winning a World Cup as a player, he achieved the milestone as a head coach with India’s T20 World Cup victory. His humility and leadership were evident when players, including captain Rohit Sharma and senior player Virat Kohli, celebrated Dravid’s contribution.

Rohit Sharma, who convinced Dravid to stay on for the T20 World Cup following India’s loss in the ODI World Cup finals last year, praised Dravid’s impact. “You are an absolute stalwart of this game, but you left all of your accolades and achievements at the door and walked in as our coach and came on a level where we all felt comfortable enough to say just about anything to you,” Rohit wrote on Tuesday.

West Bengal’s suit on CBI probe despite withdrawal of general consent maintainable: SC

West Bengal's suit on CBI probe despite withdrawal of general consent maintainable: SC

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday held as maintainable a suit filed by the West Bengal government which alleged that the CBI was continuing probes into various cases despite the state’s withdrawal of general consent on November 16, 2018.

A bench of Justices B R Gavai and Sandeep Mehta said the state’s suit shall proceed in accordance with law on its own merits.

It fixed the matter for hearing on August 13 for framing of issues.

The apex court had on May 8 reserved its verdict on the maintainability of the suit filed by the state.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for West Bengal, had argued that once the state had withdrawn its consent on November 16, 2018, the Centre could not allow the probe agency to enter the state for investigation.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, had said that the Union government or its departments do not exercise any supervisory control over Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probes.

The Centre had raised preliminary objections about the maintainability of the lawsuit filed by the West Bengal government, contending that there was no cause of action against the Union of India.

The West Bengal government has filed an original suit in the apex court against the Centre under Article 131 of the Constitution, alleging that the CBI has been filing FIRs and proceeding with investigations despite the state having withdrawn the general consent to the federal agency to probe cases within its territorial jurisdiction.

Article 131 deals with the Supreme Court’s original jurisdiction in a dispute between the Centre and one or more states.

Schoolchildren among 50 injured as overcrowded bus overturns in Haryana’s Panchkula

July 10, 2024 by Nasheman

Chandigarh: An overcrowded Haryana Roadways mini bus, mostly carrying schoolchildren, overturned near Pinjore in Panchkula district on Monday, injuring 50 passengers, officials said.

However, most of the passengers escaped with minor injuries and were discharged from the hospital in the evening, they said, adding only nine people are admitted now in the hospital.

The incident took place in the morning when the bus veered off the road near a turn while passing through a hilly patch near Pinjore, a police official said.

Panchkula Deputy Commissioner Yash Garg told PTI that after the accident about 50 passengers, most of them children, were brought to hospitals in Panchkula and Pinjore.

Most of the passengers escaped with minor injuries, he said, adding that during the screening, it was found that most of the children were in a state of shock.

“Only nine are admitted now in the Panchkula civil hospital. Of them, three-four are adults and the rest are children. No one is hospitalised in Pinjore now,” Garg said.

Meanwhile, Haryana’s Minister of State for Transport, Aseem Goel, visited the hospital in Panchkula in the evening and enquired about the health of the injured.

Goel later told reporters that the bus driver was on the run.

He said a five-member inquiry committee has been formed under the chairmanship of additional director (transport) for a probe into the incident. “The inquiry panel will give its report within a week.”

Replying to a question, Goel said, it was a 32-seater bus.

Deputy Commissioner Garg said two-three children have suffered fractures.

An elderly woman suffered serious injuries and had been referred to PGIMER at Chandigarh, he said, adding another injured person had been shifted to ICU.

Some accounts said the woman was on the road when the accident occurred.

The conductor of the bus was among the injured.

Earlier in the day, Haryana Assembly Speaker Gian Chand Gupta, who is BJP MLA from Panchkula, told reporters at the Panchkula Civil Hospital, that the driver and conductor of the bus have been suspended.

“The bus was overloaded and we have been told that the vehicle’s speed was slightly in excess. As it approached a turn, it overturned,” Gupta said.

“Our first priority was to rescue and give best treatment to the injured,” he added.

Gupta said from Tuesday an additional bus will ply on the route for the convenience of the public.

When asked if the mini bus was packed beyond capacity, Deputy Commissioner Garg said preliminary reports suggest that more people were travelling on it against its capacity.

“Some children have said the speed of the bus was slightly in excess…a detailed probe is being conducted into the cause of the accident,” he said.

Earlier, speaking to reporters at the Panchkula Civil Hospital, Garg said, “The reasons behind the accident are under investigation. Our main focus at the moment was on rescue. The matter of relief is that all children are stable, no one has a threatening injury or critical injury.”

A passenger on the bus, Jaipal, told reporters in Panchkula that the bus was overcrowded. “Suddenly, the bus started shaking near a turn and overturned,” Jaipal said.

Lionel Messi's Bodyguard gains viral fame for quick interventions to protect Messi

Lionel Messi, the world-renowned football player, has become the subject of viral internet attention, but this time it’s not just about his skills on the field. His bodyguard, Yassine Chueko, has gained significant online recognition for his swift and professional protection of Messi.

A video of Chueko, a former US Navy SEAL, showcased his quick responses to protect Messi from overly enthusiastic fans. The clip went viral on Reddit, receiving over 175,000 upvotes, with many social media users praising Chueko’s calm yet effective demeanor.

One user commented, “Messi is one of the most famous people on the planet, so that number of psychos is as big as it could possibly be for a human being. People way less famous than Messi have been hurt or killed by random people.”

Another user noted, “This dude sprints at full speed, and then he just calmly hugs the people running towards him and walks them away from him. I bet this person is expensive as hell, but worth every penny.”

Chueko’s background as a Navy SEAL, with service in Iraq and Afghanistan, equips him with the skills necessary to protect someone as high-profile as Messi. His role includes not just guarding Messi during games but also accompanying him on public outings and family events.

Inter Miami club president David Beckham personally recommended Chueko for the position. On the pitch, Chueko runs around the field to intercept any potential threats to Messi, ensuring his safety at all times.
