Raped minor sexually assaulted again in Jharkhand hospital

February 1, 2016 by Nasheman

rape

Ranchi: A 15-year-old rape victim, undergoing treatment at a Jamshedpur hospital, was raped for a second time by a security guard of the hospital, police said on Monday.

The minor girl, admitted to Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Hospital, was allegedly raped by Shambhu Mahto, a security guard of the hospital, on Sunday night.

The security guard managed to flee the place after allegedly raping the girl. A woman staffer is also accused of helping the security guard to escape from the spot.

Police have launched a hunt for the accused. The security guards posted in the hospital have been interrogated.

The minor girl was earlier raped on January 26 by a 14-year-old boy. He was nabbed and sent to a remand home. The girl was hospitalised.

But she was again assaulted in the hospital when the security guard took the girl to the bathroom and allegedly raped her.

When the girl was raped her mother had gone to bring medicine.

Crimes against women, particularly rape, are rising in Jharkhand. Till November 2015, the total number of rape cases lodged in Jharkhand were 1,124 which was 967 during the same period in 2014.

Delhi Police, RSS workers unleash brutality on protesters

February 1, 2016 by Nasheman

delhi-police

New Delhi: Delhi Police today drew flak as a video emerged in which male police constables can be seen purportedly assaulting protesters, including women, demonstrating over the suicide of Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula near the RSS head office here.

The video went viral on social media, triggering sharp reactions. Two journalists, who have alleged that they were beaten up while covering the protest on January 30, claimed that the police action was “unprovoked”.

Asked about the matter, a senior police official said that the video was being “examined”. “Top-level officers are checking that video as well as the one shot by police officers present there,” he said.

In the 30-second clip, apart from police, some men who are not in uniform can also be seen beating up a youth. A constable is seen dragging a female protester by her hair and pushing her down.

Lashing out over the video, AAP Delhi convener Dilip Pandey tweeted, “What a new low in Indian politics. Male cops beaten up female protesters, RSS workers too joined DP in this brutality (sic).”

Delhi Commission for Women Chief Swati Maliwal said the incident was “unacceptable” and questioned the absence of women constables to control the demonstration that was organised by the Joint Action Committee For Social Justice.

Meanwhile, one of the journalists who was allegedly beaten up, said, “I had gone to cover the protest and found myself being assaulted by members of Delhi Police who also shattered my camera. These policemen were aggressive, possibly because I was shooting pictures at the back of the rally.”

“Male personnel manhandled the female students, dragging and pushing them, scenes that I was about to capture with my camera. This was when the police attacked me,” he claimed on a news portal.

He and a photojournalist, who was also covering the protest, claimed that their cameras were snatched away and later smashed by police.

Case filed against Rama for ‘cruelty’ towards his wife Sita

February 1, 2016 by Nasheman

rama-sita

Patna: A practising Indian lawyer has filed a complaint case against Rama, who is worshiped by millions of Hindus, in a court in Sitamarhi, north Bihar.

The ‘case’, filed in the court of the chief judicial magistrate (CJM), sought to be made out against Ram is that his conduct showed him wanting in the treatment of women.

Complainant Thakur Chandan Kumar Singh alleged that Rama had banished Devi (goddess) Sita to a life in exile in a forest without any suitable justification for doing so.

“The Devi was exiled (given ‘vanvasa’) for no fault of hers. It was a hypocritical order from king Ram. How can a man become so cruel to his wife that he sends her off to live in a forest?” Singh says in the complaint.

Singh cited this as an instance of a non-cognisable offence committed by Ram towards his wife, who was later found innocent of charges for which she was sought to be punished.

Singh said that Rama did this even after Sita had sworn an oath in front of the sacred fire to live with her husband till death.

“Ram did not think for a single moment how a woman could live alone amid wild animals, including reptiles and mammals, in the forest,” said Singh.

The CJM agreed to take up the matter for hearing on the point on February 1. The complainant claimed his intention was not to hurt anybody’s religious sentiment.

Bajrang Dal activists parade man for converting 3, making them eat beef

January 30, 2016 by Nasheman

UP-Man-Head-Tonsured

Kanpur: A man was on Friday tonsured, garlanded with shoes, and paraded on the streets of Orai in Uttar Pradesh, allegedly by Bajrang Dal activists who accused him of converting three Hindu men to Christianity and forcibly making them consume beef.

Deputy inspector general (DIG), Jhansi range, Sharad Sachan said three FIRs had been lodged in connection with the incident, including two against Bajrang Dal members, who have not been named, and one against the alleged victim, Awdhesh Savita.

“On Friday afternoon, a mob of nearly 200 men, allegedly comprising Bajrang Dal activists, reached the house of Awdhesh at Randar in Jalaun district, brought him out forcibly, and took him to Orai (district headquarters),” a police source said.

“He was paraded through the town after his hair, eyebrows and moustache were shaved off, and garlanded with shoes,” the source added.

When police reached the spot and tried to take Awdhesh to the police post, the crowd refused to let him go. Subsequently, senior officers arrived with reinforcements, including police and PAC personnel. He was then taken to Orai Kotwali police station, the source said.

The mob reportedly accused Awdhesh of luring three Hindu men to a church in Kachwaha village of Mirzapur district on the pretext of attending a satsang and converting them to Christianity.

Police said a local Bajrang Dal member brought forward one of the three alleged converts, identified as Sangam Jatav, at Orai, and asked him to narrate the entire story in public on Friday. Jatav was reportedly “the only person who managed to escape the clutches of the men in Mirzapur”.

The Bajrang Dal member also claimed that all the three were forced to consume beef against their will. Not only this, Sangam has also alleged that pictures of Hindu gods and goddesses were thrown on the floor and they were made to walk on them, reports said.

“Prima facie, Sangam’s allegations appear suspicious, but we are investigating the matter,” Jalaun SP N Kolanchi said.

Rahul Gandhi on day-long fast along with agitating students

January 30, 2016 by Nasheman

rahul gandhi rohith vemula

Hyderabad: Stepping up the offensive on Dalit scholar suicide issue, Rahul Gandhi today commenced a day-long fast along with agitating students of Hyderabad Central University here after participating in a candle light vigil in the wee hours.

The Congress Vice President spent about two hours with agitating students past midnight and participated in the candle light vigil along with 2,000 students to mark the birthday of Rohith, who would have turned 27 today.

Rahul returned to the protest site this morning to begin the fast, expressing solidarity with them. “Rahulji is on fast,” NSUI President Roji M John said.

Rahul, who is visiting the campus for the second time in as many weeks, tweeted, “I am here today at the request of Rohith’s friends and family, to stand with them in their fight for justice.

“A young life full of dreams and aspirations was cut short. We owe it to him, to the memory of (Mahatma) Gandhiji and to every single Indian student who dreams of an India free from prejudice and injustice,” he said in another tweet.

Rohith’s mother Radhika and brother Raju were also present at the protest site.

Gandhi, who arrived here at 12.10 AM, spoke to the agitating students and lit candles before Rohith’s picture.

As students raised slogans against Irani and Dattaretreya, Rahul intervened and politely told them not to shout ‘murdabad’ (a slogan wishing death to).

“Let us not say ‘murdabad’ to somebody. That will not do justice,” he said. Velpula Sunkanna, one of the research scholars whose suspension was revoked recently, said Vice-Chancellor Appa Rao Podile should be removed from the VC post.

“On January 17, we have filed SC/ST Atrocities case against Appa Rao and (five) others. These six people should be arrested immediately. Thats the only demand,” Sunkanna, who is on an indefinite fast along with Vijay Kumar (another scholar whose suspension was revoked), said.

On Rahul Gandhi’s second visit to the campus, he said, “I look at it the way others..Arvind Kejriwal, Sitaram Yechury, CPI leaders and many people who came and supported us do. The same way we see Rahul Gandhi”.

Imposition of President’s rule in Arunachal Pradesh blatant misuse of power: Adv. Sharfuddin Ahmad

January 29, 2016 by Nasheman

Adv.-Sharfuddin-Ahmed-Vice-President-of-SDPI

New Delhi: The Social Democratic Party of India-SDPI has termed the imposition of President’s rule in Arunachal Pradesh as blatant misuse of power in subverting democracy by the BJP-led NDA Government at the Centre.

SDPI national vice president Adv. Sharfuddin Ahmad in a statement reminded the Modi Government pro-active role in imposing Central rule in Arunachal Pradesh was against the spirit of its promise of maintaining cooperative federalism during its rule. However, invoking Art. 356 of the Constitution in such haste without waiting for the Supreme Court verdict which was seized of the constitutional matters of the state in this regard.

Adv. Sharfuddin said that the Central government has not only acted in haste but with malice in taking this undemocratic step. It has usurped the rights of the people of Arunachal Pradesh to be governed by the elected leaders and thrust a Hindu right wing RSS governor.

He said that it is unfortunate that NDA Govt. has no respect for the Constitution and that the ‘power hungry’ government is indulged in rampant corrupt, communal, criminal, anti-dalit and anti-minorities. He further called upon the Supreme Court, the guardian of the Constitution, to take stringent action against this ‘murder of democracy’. Surely this govt. assumes to be above the law and so was keen on setting up National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) as well to keep judges under its control, but failed, said the party leader.

Adv. Sharfuddin said that Arunachal Pradesh is just not the right stage for the theatre of political absurdity. Two-thirds of the state is claimed by China, a dormant Naga insurgency could always come back to life. All this political instability doesn’t bode well for the state. Instability, whether political or (related to) law and order in nature is not a good thing for a border state. China closely observes events occurring in India, which is an open book, but India hardly gets to know what’s happening in China.

He said that in India post of governor became a mockery and need serious amendments in the laws empowering the Central Government with respect to the appointment of the Governors in the States. Firstly, a Governor should not belong to a political party but a retired High Court Judge, defence personnel of captain or Colonel rank officers, etc.

Bengaluru: Koliwad Cmt on lake encroachment

January 29, 2016 by Nasheman

Koliwad

Bengaluru: On 11th April 2012, the High Court of Karnataka in its final decision in ESG’s case for lake protection directed that every lake and raja Kaluve (canals interconnecting lakes) have to be surveyed to fix their real legal limits. (Details at: http://www.esgindia.org/resources/resources/esgs-pil-protect-lakes-justice-n-k-patil.html)

Accepting ESG’s submission, the Court directed that lakes and Kaluves would have to be fenced with tree lines and hedge rows – indigenous and fruiting varieties (as opposed to concrete and metal fencing).

Another of ESG’s submission the Court accepted was to ensure that there would be a minimum of 30m “no development zone” from lakes to ensure their immediate watershed and floodplain are protected – this zone would increase proportionately for larger lakes (per the Justice N K PATIL Cmt report that became a part of the order).

The Court also directed that to implement the order, there would be District Lake Protection Committees in every District headed by the Commissioner, and if they failed to act against encroachment, pollution and degradation of the lake, ten an appeal could be preferred before the Apex Cmt headed by State Revenue Secretary and working with Member Sec of the Karnataka Legal services Authority – attached to the High Court. (It took a contempt of Court case by ESG against the Govt to ensure an order to constitute lake protection committees are set up – and in most cases they have not done a great job yet.)

After this decision, several PILs have been filed to recover lake lands across the state. In this context the House Cmt on Encroachment of Tanks/Preservation in BENGALURU Urban and Rural District chaired by Legislator Mr K B Koliwad, is an innovative and welcome intervention. It’s studies have revealed that the total area of 1545 tanks in Bangalore urban and rural districts should be 57576.17 acres, of which 10,472.34 acres has been “encroached or acquired by Land Mafia”. Details are available on: www.kla.kar.nic.in.

The Committee has invited information on encroachments, even as it has extended an opportunity of a hearing to those who have encroached, or are victims of encroached lakes “as a gesture of natural justice”.

It is critical that this opportunity is seized by everyone so lakes are protected for posterity, and to ensure water and ecological security, besides good health, for present and future generations.
