Hyderabad University revokes suspension of 4 dalit research scholars

January 21, 2016 by Nasheman

Rohith Vemula

Hyderabad: Yielding to intense pressure, the Hyderabad Central University (HCU) today revoked the suspension of four dalit students against whom action was taken along with another research scholar Rohith Vemula Chakravarthi, who allegedly committed suicide in his hostel room on January 17.

On a day of dramatic developments, 13 SC/ST faculty members of the unversity, who backed the protesting students and had threatened to resign, announced that they were giving up their administrative posts.

The revocation decision was taken at a meeting of the Executive Council of the HCU, on a day the stir gained further political heat and the protesting students resolved to step up their campaign for justice by enlisting support from campuses across the country.

“The Council, after taking into account the extraordinary situation prevailing in the university and after discussing the issue in detail, resolved to terminate the punishment imposed on the students concerned with immediate effect,” HCU said in a statement here.

The HCU had in September last year suspended the five students, including Rohith, for six months (entire semester) for allegedly assaulting ABVP leader Susheel Kumar in August.

But, the suspension was later revoked. However, in December, while allowing them to attend classes, the HCU had denied them access to the hostel.

The five research scholars, under the umbrella of a Joint Action Committee, had termed their “expulsion” (except classrooms and workshops related to subject of their study) from hostel as “undemocratic” and a “social boycott” and were forced to sleep in a make-shift tent on the campus.

After the alleged suicide of Rohith, the issue sparked strong reactions on the campus.
In the statment, HCU Vice-Chancellor Prof Appa Rao Podile, who is under attack over the issue, appealed to the university community to maintain calm and harmony under the extraordinary circumstances prevailing on the campus and repose faith in the internal mechanisms to resolve the issue.

He urged all in the university to contribute to resuming regular class work, research activities and administrative work without further delay.

Adding further political thrust to the agitation, which saw non-BJP party leaders making a beeline to the campus in the last few days, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal reached the campus today and called for removal of Union ministers Smriti Irani and Bandaru Dattatreya.

The research scholar’s alleged suicide following his suspension snowballed into a major row with BJP’s rivals wading into it and demanding the removal of Irani and and Labour Minister Dattatreya, accusing them of being responsible for the death.

The agitating students have been demanding resignation of Dattatreya, removal of Vice Chancellor, Rs five crore compensation to Rohith’s family and employment to a member of his family, besides revocation of suspension of four students.

TRAI slams Facebook over ‘diversion’, company hits back

January 21, 2016 by Nasheman

Facebook

New Delhi: A day before the open house discussion on differential pricing of data, a full-scale war of words has broken out between telecom regulator TRAI and social network Facebook over the Net neutrality debate.

Terming Facebook’s action as diversionary, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India said the whole consultation exercise has been reduced to “a crudely majoritarian and orchestrated poll”.

“Neither the spirit nor the letter of a consultative process warrants such an interpretation which, if accepted, has dangerous ramifications for policy-making in India,” TRAI said in its letter to Facebook on January 18.

According to the regulator, the campaign by Facebook to defend its free Internet platform Free Basics in India is “wholly misplaced” as “the consultation paper is on differential pricing for data services and not on any particular product or service”.

Facebook India on January 20 responded to TRAI’s allegations, saying it’s being singled out. “We would note that we are not aware of a similar request (from TRAI) having been made to any other commentator who did not answer these specific questions,” it said in the reply.

“And we continue to believe that the original comments submitted were responsive to the general questions raised in the consultation paper, which clearly covers such topics as the Free Basics programme,” Facebook Public Policy Director for India, South and Central Asia Ankhi Das said.

TRAI also spoke of “the self-appointed spokesmanship”, in which “you have not been authorised by your users to speak on behalf of them collectively”. The regulator went on to say that despite giving an opportunity to people who shared their views through the Facebook platform, “text of TRAI’s communication was not in turn conveyed by you (Facebook) to those who had sent responses to TRAI using your platform”.

It all goes back to December 2014 when Airtel decided to charge separately for Internet-based calls, but withdrew the plan later after facing protest. The debate heated up after Airtel launched its free Internet platform Airtel Zero and Facebook followed suit with its Internet.org, which was later rechristened as Free Basics.

TRAI has started a public consultation on whether plans or schemes allowing differential pricing of the Internet based on its usage should be allowed or not. This is the first consultation paper from TRAI which has received maximum comments — around 24 lakh — till January 7, the deadline which was extended from the earlier December 30.

The social network behemoth claims that the number of comments in support of Free Basics to be more than 1.35 crore as against TRAI’s official figure of around 24 lakh. Facebook thinks that “someone with access to designated TRAI e-mail account appears to have blocked receipt of all e-mails from Facebook”.

In a separate letter addressed to TRAI, Facebook said it found that “on December 17 at 5.51.53 GMT, an individual with access to the TRAI e-mail account designated to accept comments took action that blocked Facebook from delivering any additional e-mail”. The regulator has cited a similar instance of user complaint on non-functioning of an e-mail address during the response period, which was “brought to its notice and the situation was immediately rectified”.

“It is surprising that it took over 25 days for you to inform TRAI about this,” TRAI said in the January 18 letter. According to TRAI Chairman R S Sharma, the regulator will firm up its views on differential pricing of data services by the end of this month.

Woman journalist attacked by Gujarat riots convict during interview

January 21, 2016 by Nasheman

Revati Laul

Ahmedabad: A convict in a Gujarat riots case, out on parole, allegedly assaulted a journalist in Ahmedabad on Wednesday evening when she met him for an interview.

Revati Laul, who is writing a book on the convicts in the 2002 Naroda Patiya massacre case, alleged that she was punched and slapped by Suresh Chhara when she asked him some questions during an interview at his house in Naroda area of Ahmedabad.

She claims that she managed to escape after Suresh Chhara’s son and some neighbours intervened.

“I visited him at his house and I politely asked him if he wanted to share information about himself, his past, family and he, without provocation, started slapping me. He kept on punching me and banged my head to the wall. I somehow managed to flee from the spot,” Ms Laul said.

Ms Laul was treated at a government hospital and she later lodged a complaint with the Vejalpur police station.

A former NDTV journalist, Revati Laul has been living in Ahmedabad for over a year, working on her book.

Suresh Chhara was convicted to 31 years in prison in 2013 for his involvement in the Naroda Patiya massacre – one of the bloodiest episodes in the 2002 Gujarat riots – in which around 100 people were killed.

He was released on parole by a local court last week, reportedly to trace his teenage daughter who has been missing since the last few months.

Chhara’s former wife had alleged last month that he tried to rape her when he was released on parole few months ago, following which his parole was cancelled.

13 faculty members of Hyderabad University resign over Dalit student suicide

January 21, 2016 by Nasheman

Rohith Vemula

Hyderabad: In a bid to show solidarity with the protesting students over the suicide of a Dalit student, 13 faculty members of Hyderabad Central University resigned on Thursday. It includes Professor V Krishna, controller of exams, Chief Medical Officer Dr Ravendra Kumar, 10 hostel wardens and chief warden Nagaraju.

The situation in the university remains tense as protests continue over the suicide of PhD scholar V Rohith.

The university is now mulling dilution of punishment for the four other Dalit students who were suspended along with Rohith for allegedly assaulting an ABVP member. Sources said that the University is also considering closing the institution for a brief while.

Meanwhile, political parties are trying to score brownie points on the issue by portraying themselves fighting for the backward class. After Congress, TMC, AIMIM, BSP, Left, Aam Admi Party has stepped up its attacks demanding an explanation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal visited the university today. His party has also demanded resignations of Union Ministers Smriti Irani and Bandaru Dattatreya.

On Wednesday, HRD Minister Smriti Irani defended herself saying that Rohith’s suicide is not a confrontation between a Dalit and a non-Dalit.

Beedi baron Mohammed Nisham gets life term for killing guard with Hummer

January 21, 2016 by Nasheman

Mohammed Nisham

Thrissur: Kerala beedi baron Mohammed Nisham, convicted for killing a security guard in a fit of rage by ramming his luxury Hummer, was today sentenced life imprisonment in addition to 24 years in jail by a court here which also slapped a fine of Rs 80.30 lakh on him.

“He is likely to behind bars for 39 years,” Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) C P Udayabhanu said. First Additional District and Sessions Judge K P Sudheer had held accused Nisham (40) guilty yesterday.

Pronouncing the quantum of sentence, the judge directed that the deceased guard Chandrabose’s wife Jamanthi should be paid Rs 50 lakh from the fine amount.

The court also directed the prosecution to launch proceedings against Nisham’s wife Amal, a witness who had turned hostile in the case.

SPP Udayabhanu said Nisham will have to undergo life imprisonment under IPC section 302 (murder) and an additional 24 years under various sections of the IPC, including 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means), and 427 (committing mischief).

The prosecution had demanded the maximum penalty of death sentence to the accused citing it as a rarest of rare case and a compensation of Rs five crore to the deceased guard’s family.

Jamanthi and Chandrabose’s mother, who were present in court, expressed disappointment with the verdict. “We did not get the justice we expected. Nisham will be happy in jail no matter how many years he is behind bars,” Janmanthi said.

Nisham, who was in an “inebriated” state, had allegedly in a fit of rage assaulted Chandrabose (51) and later rammed his luxury vehicle against him in the early hours of January 29 last year. He was irked over the delay in the guard opening the main gates of a posh residential complex ‘Shobha city’ here.

The severely injured guard, treated in a hospital with ventilator support, died on February 16. The case had evoked widespread protests across the state.

Bigg Boss Season 9 is one big pre-planned drama

January 21, 2016 by Shaheen Raaj

bigg-boss-underworld

Colors Channel’s most popular reality show Bigg Boss has mostly depended, in every season, on its over dramatically melodramatic & pre – planned albeit allegedly scripted controversial contents and many of the earlier contestants of the Bigg Boss show have revealed their opinionated version to the varied sources comprising of the members of the 4th estate but of course on condition of anonymity.

The latest prediction doing the rounds of Tinsel Town these days is that Mandana Karimi, one of the contestant of Bigg Boss Season 9, will be a sure shot winner of Bigg Boss Season 9. And this pre – planning was evidently clear when one by one & week after week all the strong contestants were eliminated nay evicted without any rhyme or reason like Kishwar Merchant, who was at least given a consolation prize of Rs 15 lakhs – so what if that particular amount will be finally & actually deducted from the original prize booty of Rs 50 lakhs, & Priya Thakker, who was already declared as one of the 1st contestants in the Top 5 category to get a Ticket to finale and this is to name just 2 contestants and they were all eliminated under the pretext of the allegedly rigged voting melodrama.

mandana-karimi

And to top it all the Queen of the small screen namely Balaji Head Honcho Ekta Kapoor too has jumped into the fray of the cess pool of Bigg Boss albeit not as a contestant but to blatantly, schemingly & allegedly promote her upcoming film Mastizaade’s heroine Mandana Karimi as the currently ongoing season of Bigg Boss Season 9’s winner. That apart Mastizaade also stars Tusshar Kapoor & Aftab Shivdasani and the film is releasing, a day before the Grand Finale of Bigg Boss Season 9 (23rd Jan, 2O16), and to be precise Mastizaade is releasing on 22nd Jan, 2016 and as predicted by one & all Mandana Karimi, and now please don’t ask Mandana Karimi who?, is alleged to be the ultimate winner in the rat race of this ongoing 9th season of Bigg Boss.

Any ways Mandana Karimi is all set or all set up to bag the crowning trophy of Bigg Boss Season 9. And now a few nuggets about Mandana Karimi, the latest sensational talk of or rather the toast of the town courtesy the Bigg Boss show. She is supposed to be one (inane) film old actress from Iran and now a protege nay a blue eyed girl of the Balaji Camp & Ekta Kapoor’s allegedly favorite Baby Doll. Not only this she is also the most favored & the most favorite person of Bigg Boss host Salman Khan who has left no stone unturned to blatantly albeit encouragingly promote her as a safe bet nay a winning target. And the timing to promote her through such a big platform of Colors Channel’s Bigg Boss could not have been more appropriately & perfectly timed coinciding with the release of her upcoming film Mastizaade.

Hold your breath the pre -planned Bigg Boss trophy & prize fixing, just like Cricket match fixing, drama does not end there or began there.

Since past one week the camouflaged Big Boss’ voice & Salman Khan had been giving a subtle albeit stern warning to Mandana Karimi that she may have to face a turbulent decision making week which may result in her ouster from the Bigg Boss house topped with dire consequences.

And of course their saying proved right when last Sun to be precise on 17th Jan, 2016, Ekta Kapoor’s alleged message nay an av courier boys Tusshar Kapoor & Aftab Shivdasani, both of them Madana Karimi’s co – star in Mastizaade, arrived on the Bigg Boss show on the alleged pretext to promote their film Mastizaade. Be that as it may be so after meeting Salman Khan the host they went straight into the Bigg Boss house and met Mandana Karimi in private and away from the other inmates informing her that Madame Ekta Kapoor was damn upset with her and she had also spoken to the media personnel alleging that Mandana Karimi had dishonored her contract with Balaji by not taking part in the promotional campaigns of Mastizaade. The newspaper clipping of which was already shown to Mandana Karimi by Bigg Boss just minutes ago. Then Ekta Kapoor’s av too was played on the Bigg Boss show in which Ekta Kapoor had directly addressed Mandana Karimi, “You have dishonoured the contract with Balaji by not taking part in the promotional campaigns of Mastizaade and the film is releasing next week. With my permission you had entered the Bigg Boss house just for 4 to 5 weeks but you are still here. So I order you to leave the Big Boss house immediately in fact right now or else you will have to face dire consequences. In fact my team of lawyers have already prepared a strong defamation case against you to the tune of Rs 50 crores if you do not leave the house right now.” Then Tusshar Kapoor & Aftab Shivdasani left Bigg Boss house assuring Mandana Karimi that they are always with her. After which Salman Khan appeared and told Mandana Karimi to take a proper decision and if she left the Big Boss house right then she will have to pay a heavy penalty to Bigg Boss.

And then the flip side of the most funny & the farcical part of the story is that Bigg Boss, Salman Khan, Balaji Queen Ekta Kapoor in tandem with Tusshar Kapoor, Aftab Shivdasani et al couldn’t maintain the nail biting suspense oriented
moments before the 2 minutes of commercial break. And as soon as the commercial break was over one more av was run in the Bigg Boss house and once again Ekta Kapoor addressed Mandana Karimi directly and averred, “Don’t worry Mandana no need to leave the Big Boss house at least not now. You are the best & the strongest contest and I am sure you will be the winner.” So much of pre – confidence does not leave any room or scope for doubts as far as the alleged conspiratorial plan of the concerned parties to get Mandana Karimi declared as the winner of Bigg Boss Season 9 is concerned. And all the while all of them were having the last laugh. And even Mademoiselle Mandana Karimi was seen shedding the copious crocodile tears and in the very next scene she was seen laughing away to glory. And very soon just within a matter of 5 days she will be seen laughing all the way to the bank once she bags the crowning trophy of Bigg Boss Season 9 as predicted earlier.

Post Script: Incidentally speaking a tarot card reader named Monica was also summonmed in the Big Boss house on 20th Jan, 2016 to have a last minute interaction with the Top 5 contestants namely Rochelle, Rao, Keith Sequeira, Hrushab Sinha, Prince Nirala & Mandana Karimi. No prizes for guessing that the tarot card reader Monica too predicted Mandana Karimi’s name as a clear winner. And on the same day Keith Sequiera was also eliminated & evicted.

A little more analytical introspection at this juncture regarding Bigg Boss Season 9 will not be out of place. No doubt that over the years the small screen Colors Channel’s reality show Bigg Boss has become quite popular mainly because of its allegedly premeditated albeit scripted & purposely staged controversial elements.
And as usual Bigg Boss Season 9 too, is not devoid of these controversial elements.

In fact Bigg Boss season 9 has almost become too hot to handle. These time the onlookers & the audiences too felt that the contestants were almost imprisoned for 105 days in nothing but a torture chamber as they had to undergo grueling task after task under extreme circumstantial conditions.

Besides there were all the ingredients intact as always packed to the brim as in a celluloid silver screen commercial potboiler. So this time around too Bigg Boss Season 9 had everything in extreme measures. To start off with as usual there were romantic couples (Kishwar Merchant with her real life beau Suyash Rai, Rochelle Rao with her real life beau Keith Sequeira & of course the studs Prince Nirala & wild card entry Hrushab Sinha, man handling oops sorry getting flirtatiously passionate & cozy with each & every female inmates of Bigg Boss house. Besides as usual there was bitching & backbiting, backstabbing, slapping & kicking (Mandana Karimi blatantly kicking Kiswar Merchant under the pretext of doing a task and for which Kishwer Merchant had created a lot of noise – to name just one instance), jealousy, anger, betrayal, screaming, freely using cuss words (Beeped off later during the day to day telecast) et al and all the fireworks used to take place in a second under a slightest provocation. So you name it they had it. Yes even kissing on each others cheeks were doing a free round. So what next Mr. Bigg Boss? Will the next season also have bedroom scenes and fully enjoyable lip – lock smooching sessions?

This time too, there was the staple diet of slightly gayish characters and this time it was dress designer Kamli aka Kanwaljeet Singh who lasted in the Bigg Boss house for a brief phase topped with past contestant Imam Siddiqui who had re – entered the Big Boss house in the last weeks to test the remaining contestants regarding their eligibility to be the winner of “Ticket To Finale”. And then of course last but not the least as usual there were promotional campaigns galore of any Tom, Dick & Harry’s films with their usual quota of show off stars which also included Sonam Kapoor (She had entered the Bigg Boss house 3 times – may be preferential treatment as she happened to be the host Salman Khan’s co – star in Prem Ratan Dhan Paayo which also gave Salman Khan lots of chances to blow his own Sultani trumpet time & again) and then there was Akshay Kumar (who even ‘Airlift’ed one of the contestant) Priya Thakker out of the Big Boss house for eviction purpose.

And how can one forget the sensous & the sexual part of Big Boss Season 9. With the bare chested boys (A chosen few male contestants) jumping into the pool with the bikini babes (A chosen few female contestants) topped with Sunny Leone, showing off her curves in a tight illfitting dress, when she had come to promote one of her own film and all the above mentioned Double Trouble was taken to set the temperatures & the TRP’s soaring high, higher & highest.

So much more has happened in this season 9 of Bigg Boss Double Trouble that even reams & reams of papier -mache would be insuffice to recount everything in one go.

As a parting shot let us remind you once again that as of now there are 4 finalists in the rat race of the Grand Finale of Bigg Boss Double Trouble, to be held on Sat 23rd Jan, 2016, namely Hrushabh Sinha, Rochelle Rao, Prince Nirala & Mandana Karimi and we have already told you who will be the ultimate winner. Period!

AAP protests, demands Bandaru Dattatreya’s resignation and arrest

January 20, 2016 by Nasheman

Bandaru Dattatreya

New Delhi: The AAP on Tuesday protested over the suicide by a Dalit research scholar and demanded the resignation and arrest of union Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya and the vice chancellor of the University of Hyderabad.

Over 300 supporters of the Aam Aadmi Party’s Delhi unit and its student wing, Chhatra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti, besides party leader Ashutosh and MLAs Sandeep Kumar and Rakhi Birla, gathered at the Jantar Mantar here.

“We demand the immediate resignation and arrest of union minister Bandaru Dattatreya for driving a Dalit student to suicide in Hyderabad,” AAP spokesperson Sanjay Singh said at a press conference here.

He demanded that Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani’s role in the matter should also be investigated.

He said the party would launch a nationwide protest on January 21 against the alleged persecution of Dalit students that forced one of them to commit suicide.

“The Dalits have faced persecution after the Narendra Modi government came to power at the Centre. There are several instances, including those in Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled Haryana, where Dalits were targeted, persecuted and even murdered,” he added.

Ashutosh, while referring to the Dadri lynching, attacked the NDA government saying, “This government is neither for the minorities nor for the Dalits.”

“Today in this country, in the name of Hindutva ideology, there is no space left for any kind of protest. Baba Bhimrao Ambedkar in 1949 had warned the country about the RSS saying that they are a big threat to the nation.

“Today, we promise to follow the words of Ambedkar… We all will have to prepare ourselves to face a long fight against this Hindutva ideology party,” Ashutosh said at the protest at Jantar Mantar.

He also demanded Smriti Irani’s resignation saying, “The PM continues to shield ministers who ostracize Dalits. The PM should sack Bandaru Dattatreya, and Smriti Irani’s role should be probed.”

Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula was found hanging from the ceiling of a room in the New Research Scholars’ Hostel of the University of Hyderabad on Sunday. He was one of the five Dalit students suspended and expelled from the hostel and was staging a protest on the campus for the past 15 days.

Protests escalated in Hyderabad and cities across the country including in Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and Chennai.

Student organisations including the All India Students Association (AISA), Students Federation of India (SFI) and CYSS and the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) held protests at Jantar Mantar and at the HRD ministry in the capital demanding the sacking of the ministers and strong action against the vice chancellor.

As many as 115 students were detained on Monday after a violent protest outside the HRD ministry.

Dattatreya and the vice chancellor were named in the FIR over the death, which triggered massive protests and demands for their removal from their posts.

Dattatreya had written a letter to Irani, seeking action against their “anti-national acts”.

The HRD ministry on Monday constituted a two-member fact finding team to look into the incident.

Dalit student’s suicide ‘murder of democracy’: Kejriwal

January 19, 2016 by Nasheman

Arvind Kejriwal

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday described the suicide of the Hyderabad Dalit student as “murder of democracy, social justice and equality”.

“It’s not suicide. It’s murder. It’s murder of democracy, social justice and equality. (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi ji should sack ministers and apologise to the nation,” Kejriwal said in a tweet.

“(The) Modi government (is) constitutionally duty bound to uplift Dalits. Instead, Modi ji’s ministers got five Dalit students ostracised and suspended.”

Rohith Vemula, a second-year research scholar of science, technology and society studies department at the University of Hyderabad, was found hanging from the ceiling of a room in the New Research Scholars’ Hostel late on Sunday.

He was one of the five Dalit students suspended and expelled from the hostel for staging a protest on the campus for the past 15 days.
