December 10, 2023 by Nasheman

Thane: An FIR has been registered against a woman for allegedly trying to kill her 61-year-old husband by setting him afire over a domestic dispute in Kalyan city with the help of two others, police said on Saturday.

The other two male accused in the case are friends of one of the daughters of the victim, an official said.

Nobody has been arrested so far.

As per the statement recorded by the injured man in a hospital, his wife would argue with him over his monthly pension and his objection to the frequent visits of the two youths to their house, the official said.

The victim had lodged a complaint with the police in the past against the two youths claiming a threat to his life, he added.

“The victim was attacked by two youths on the night of December 8 who doused him with some inflammable liquid while his wife set him on fire,” the official said quoting the FIR.

The victim said his neighbours rushed him to the hospital.

Further investigation is underway.

NHRC notice to Manipur govt, DGP over killings in gun fight

December 10, 2023 by Nasheman

New Delhi: The NHRC has issued notices to the Manipur government and the state’s police chief over reports that at least 13 people were killed in a gun fight in Leithao village in the Tengnoupal district, officials said on Friday.

The incident, as reported, indicates a “lapse” on the part of the law enforcing agencies and the forces deployed to ensure peace and law and order in the state, the rights panel said in a statement.

The National Human Rights Commission observed that the reported loss of 13 lives in an area, which remained calm since the tension erupted in the state of Manipur in May this year, is “alarming and disturbing”.

The rights panel has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report that “at least 13 people were killed in a gun fight in Leithao village near Saibol in the Tengnoupal district, Manipur. Reportedly, the incident happened on December 4,” it said.

The commission has observed that the contents of the media report, if true, amount to a serious issue of human rights violations and is a matter of concern.

Accordingly, it has issued notices to the state’s chief secretary and the director general of police, seeking a detailed report within two weeks, the statement said.

It should include the status of the FIR registered by the police and steps taken by the state government to ensure that such incidents of violence do not take place anywhere in the state, the rights panel said.

“The state of Manipur and its people have already suffered a lot. It is firmly reiterated that it is the duty of the state to protect the life and properties of its citizens both private and public and to promote fraternity and spirit of brotherliness amongst the communities,” it said.

The NHRC since May 2023 has received several complaints from individuals, NGOs and activists alleging violation of human rights during the incidents of violence in Manipur, the statement said.

The commission said these matters are being considered by the full bench of the commission and were also discussed at length, during its camp sitting at Guwahati, Assam on November 17. Senior officers from the government of Manipur, as well as the representatives of the complainants and civil society were also present, the statement said.

According to the media report, carried on December 5, the village has nine houses and around 120 residents. However, no casualties were reported from among the villagers.

Prima facie, it is suspected that the victims of the violence could even be militants from Myanmar since the nearby hills from Leithao are a common route used by them to enter Manipur, it said.

Reportedly, this is the highest single-day loss of life in the violence that erupted in Manipur this year, it added.

Pakistan cricket team in Australia without a doctor

December 10, 2023 by Nasheman

Karachi: Visa and passport issues have left the national senior cricket team in Australia without a doctor and the under-19 side in the UAE without a team manager.

Sohail Saleem, who was named as the official team doctor for the series in Australia and New Zealand, is yet to join the team.

“The Pakistan Cricket Board is still trying to get a visa for Dr Saleem and as soon as it comes he will join the side in Australia in time for the first Test in Perth,” a reliable source in the PCB said.

He said similarly former Test batsman, Shoaib Muhammad, who was named manager of the Pakistan junior side taking part in the Asia Cup in UAE, has also been unable to leave with the squad.

“Shoaib had some expired passport issues which the board is sorting out and hopefully he will also soon reach UAE to take charge,” the source said.

Ironically even the off-spinner, Sajid Khan, who is set to replace Abrar Ahmed in the Pakistan squad in Australia has also had his departure delayed due to visa issues.

The source admitted before naming the officials in any touring squad, the board should make it certain they will leave with their teams on schedule.

SUV catches fire after accident in UP’s Bareilly, eight including child charred to death

SUV catches fire after accident in UP's Bareilly, eight including child charred to death
Firefighters and police personnel at the spot after an SUV caught fire following a collision with a truck on the Bareilly-Nainital road

Bareilly (UP): Eight people, including a child, were charred to death in their SUV after it was hit by an oncoming truck and caught fire in this Uttar Pradesh district, police said on Sunday.

The driver of the SUV lost control of the vehicle after it suffered a tyre puncture. It jumped the barrier onto the other side of the road and was hit by the truck coming from the opposite direction, they said.

The accident occurred late on Saturday near the Dubhaura village in Bhojipura area on the Bareilly-Nainital Road, they added.

By the time the police reached the spot, the SUV was engulfed by the flames, the police said.

Superintendent of Police Sushil Chandrabhan confirmed the deaths of the eight people, including the child.

According to police, the SUV belonged to grocery shop owner Sumit Gupta, who had given it to Furkan. A customer, Narayan Nagla village resident Asif had asked Gupta for his SUV on Saturday morning, saying that his nephew Furkan wants to take it to attend a wedding in Bareilly.

On Saturday night, Furkan and some others had gone to Bareilly’s Faham Lawn to attend the wedding, they said.

The SUV went out of control just a kilometre ahead of Bhojipura police station. According to eyewitnesses, the speed was so high that part of the divider of the four lanes broke and the vehicle reached the other side and hit a truck coming from the Nainital side, they said.

When the car caught fire, those sitting inside were stuck as the doors of the car did not open, probably due to malfunctioning of the central locking system.

Police suspect that Furkan is among those killed, however, the victims, all residents of Baheri area, are yet to be identified.

Some passers-by moved forward to break the glass but due to the high flames, no one could reach near the car. Meanwhile, the truck had also caught fire. Some people brought fire extinguishers from the neighbouring petrol pump and tried to extinguish the fire.

Bareilly’s CFO (Chief Fire Officer) Chandra Mohan Sharma said it is difficult to tell the reason for the accident right now.

It may have been the tyre burst, or the driver may have lost control due to sleep or being drunk, he said.

The reason will become clear after the investigation by the forensic team, he said.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has condoled the deaths.https://platform.twitter.com/embed/Tweet.html?dnt=false&embedId=twitter-widget-0&features=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%3D%3D&frame=false&hideCard=false&hideThread=false&id=1733661324029407354&lang=en&origin=https%3A%2F%2Fenglish.varthabharati.in%2Findia%2Fsuv-catches-fire-after-accident-in-ups-bareilly-eight-including-child-charred-to-death&sessionId=e531f4680a11a44f9b5f54c171c5194dcda2fac7&theme=light&widgetsVersion=b2c2611296916%3A1702048662315&width=550px

Karnataka woman booked for sending hoax bomb threat sms to police to get back at husband

December 8, 2023 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: A case was registered against a 32-year-old woman by the city police on Thursday after she sent a hoax threat message to a police officer from her husband’s mobile number to take revenge on him for allegedly breaking her cell phone.

According to police, the woman’s husband broke her mobile phone after he stumbled upon her conversations with men she had befriended online.

This angered the woman. When she told this to her male friend, a Bihar native, he hatched a plan with another common friend to trap the woman’s husband. Meanwhile after the woman got another phone, her friend allegedly forwarded a hoax message about a bomb threat to her and suggested that she send it to a senior police officer from her husband’s phone.

The woman acted on his suggestion and allegedly forwarded the hoax bomb threat from her husband’s phone to the police officer on December 3, claiming that there would be a series of RDX bomb blasts. Once the message was sent successfully, she allegedly deleted it from his mobile phone, they said.

Later, when the woman’s husband was detained for questioning, the police turned suspicious and questioned his wife. She then confessed to having sent the message from her husband’s phone to seek revenge on him for breaking her phone, they added.

The woman and her accomplices who gave her the idea of sending the threat message have been booked under different sections of Indian Penal Code as well as the Information Technology Act. Further investigation is underway, police said.

Gautam Gambhir called me fixer: S Sreesanth

Gautam Gambhir called me fixer: S Sreesanth

Surat: Former pacer S Sreesanth on Thursday alleged that ex-India teammate Gautam Gambhir called him a “fixer” during a Legends League Cricket match here.

The two World Cup-winning players were involved in a heated exchange during an Eliminator match between Indian Capitals and Gujarat Giants here on Wednesday.

The umpires had to intervene ad separate the two players.

“He kept on calling me ‘fixer fixer, you are a fixer, **** off you fixer on live television on centre wicket,” Sreesanth said while going live from his Instagram handle.

“I just said ‘what are you saying’, I kept laughing in a sarcastic way. He spoke to the umpires in the same language when they tried to control him,” he added.

Sreesanth was handed a life ban by the BCCI’s disciplinary committee due to his alleged involvement in the IPL 2013 spot fixing scandal.

However, the ban was reduced to seven years in 2019 by the Supreme court of India.

“From my side, I didn’t use any bad word. Please guys support the real truth. He has been doing it with a lot of people. I have no idea why he started it, it was the end of the over.

“Now his people are saying sixer sixer bola hai but unhone bola you fixer, tu fixer hai (his people are claiming he said sixer sixer but he said you are a fixer). This is not the way to talk. I’m thinking of leaving it (the incident) here but his people are trying to save him. I request you all to not fall for extra paid PR work,” Sreesanth added.

An hour after Sreesanth went live. Gambhir, who is a BJP MP from East Delhi, posted on X a picture of himself in the Indian jersey smiling, captioning it “Smile when the world is all about attention!”

On Wednesday, in another Instagram live video after the game Sreesanth had called Gambhir “Mr fighter”, adding that he did not even respect senior players.

“Just wanted to clear the air with what happened with Mr fighter. One who always fights with all his colleagues. For no reason whatsoever. He does not even respect his own senior players, including Viru Bahi ( Virender Sehwag).

“That’s exactly what happened today. Without any provocation, he just kept on calling me something which was very rude which shouldn’t have been said by Mr Gautam Gambhir,” Sreesanth had said.

“I am not at all at fault here. I just wanted to clear the air straight away. What Mr Gauti has done, sooner or later all of you will get to know. The words that he used and the things he said on a cricket field, live, is not acceptable.

“My family, my state, everybody has gone through so much. I fought that battle with all your support. Now people want to down me for no reason. He said things he shouldn’t have said. I will surely let you know what he said,” he reiterated.

This is not the first time Gambhir has been involved in an on field altercation. He has had fiery exchanges with Virat Kohli a couple of times during the IPL, including earlier this year when Royal Challengers Bangalore took on Lucknow Super Giants.

Gambhir was LSG’s mentor back then.

Live-in relationship ‘dangerous disease’, should be law against it: BJP MP in LS

Live-in relationship 'dangerous disease', should be law against it: BJP MP in LS
BJP MP from Haryana’s Bhiwani-Mahendragarh Dharambir Singh.

New Delhi : A BJP MP from Haryana on Thursday termed live-in relationships a “dangerous disease” that needs to be eradicated from society and urged the government to make a law against it.

Raising the issue in the Lok Sabha during ‘zero hour’, Dharambir Singh also said divorce rates in love marriages were high and the consent of the parents of the bride and groom should therefore be made mandatory for such alliances.

“I want to bring to the notice of the government and Parliament a very serious issue. Indian culture is known for its philosophy of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (world is one family) and brotherhood. Our social fabric is different from others in the world. The whole world is impressed by our unity in diversity,” the MP from Bhiwani-Mahendragarh said.

Noting that India has a long tradition of arranged marriages, Singh said a large section of society even to this day gives priority to marriages arranged by parents or relatives.

This has the consent of the bride and groom and arranged marriages are based on a match of several common factors such as social and individual values and likes as well as family backgrounds, he said.

“Marriage is considered a sacred relationship that continues for seven generations…Divorce rate is about 1.1 per cent in India as compared with America which has a rate of about 40 per cent. It has been observed that the rate of divorce in arranged marriages is very less. However, there is a lot of increase in divorce rate recently and the main reason for it is love marriages,” Singh said.

“Therefore, it is my suggestion that the consent of mother and father of the bride and groom be made mandatory in love marriages because in large parts of the country marriage does not happen in the same ‘gotra’ and due to love marriages there are a lot of conflicts in the villages. Scores of families are destroyed in these conflicts, therefore the consent of both the families is important,” he said.

Singh said a “new disease” has emerged and this social evil is called “live-in relationship”.

Under this, two persons, man or woman, live together without marriage, the BJP MP said.
