Heavy rain lashes Bengaluru, many areas, roads flooded

November 7, 2023 by Nasheman

BENGALURU:  Several parts of the city received heavy rain on Monday night, exposing the city’s fragile infrastructure. The rain that lashed for more than an hour flooded many roads, making it difficult for vehicle users to wade through.

As it rained quite late in the night, there were no traffic jams reported. Underpasses at Anand Rao Circle, Okalipuram, Lingarajapuram and Shivananda Circle were flooded, while Commercial Street and Kamaraj Road had knee-deep water. As a precautionary measure, the traffic police barricaded the underpasses.

Water entered some houses in Kurubarahalli, while flooding was reported in Cooke Town and CK Garden area. Many residents complained of up to 1.5 feet of water inside their homes. The area is flooded as the Railways have blocked a stormwater drain, they said.

Purushottam (90), a retired undersecretary to the state government and a resident of the area, was livid that the authorities had not come to address their problems, though the ground floor of his house was flooded since late afternoon.

Railway ADRM Kusuma Hariprasad said she would look into the issue. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who is also Bengaluru Development Minister, visited the BBMP control room around 11.30 pm and sought details from BBMP officials on rain damage, and flooding of roads and underpasses. He spoke directly to officials to know the situation and asked them about the immediate measures taken.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a thunderstorm warning for most parts of coastal and south interior Karnataka for the next two days. It also forecast heavy rainfall across the many parts of Karnataka for the next three days, including north interior Karnataka.

The department issued an ‘Orange’ alert for Kodagu district and a ‘Yellow’ alert for Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Chamarajanagar, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Mandya, Mysuru and Shivamogga districts.

IMD scientist A Prasad told TNIE that most parts of Karnataka are experiencing rain due to the formation of a trough from the Southeast Arabian Sea to the Kerala coast, covering south interior Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh up to West-central Bay of Bengal.

He added that there is a deficit of 53 per cent rainfall in the state as a whole. The present rainfall will not cover the deficit.

Former driver held for senior official’s murder in Bengaluru

November 7, 2023 by Nasheman

Prathima KS

BENGALURU:  The police have claimed to have solved the murder case of 43-year-old Prathima KS, senior geologist, with the arrest of her former driver.

The accused, identified as Kiran, 32, of Jamboo Savari Dinne at Konanakunte in the city, was arrested at the Male Mahadeshwara Hills on Sunday.

Investigations revealed that Kiran, who was sacked from job, murdered the officer as she did not pay heed to his repeated requests to reappoint him as her car driver.

Kiran was appointed as a driver on a contract basis by the Department of Mines and Geology eight years ago. He was Prathima’s driver and was reportedly sacked two months ago for misconduct.

The police traced his phone call and managed to arrest him there. He was planning to go to Tamil Nadu, the police said.

Kiran was produced before the Second Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Court, which remanded him in police custody till November 15. The accused has a criminal history. A case of attempt to dacoity was registered against him by Konanakunte police in 2017.

Rahul Kumar Shahapurwad, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), told reporters that Kiran worked as Prathima’s driver for four years at the Bengaluru Urban office of the Mines and Geology Department near Vidhana Soudha.

On learning that Kiran lost his job, his wife, who believed him to be a permanent government employee, reportedly left him.  Kiran’s father too works as a driver in the same department. Kiran confessed that
he murdered Prathima as he was not reappointed as her driver, he said.

On Saturday, Kiran waited at Prathima’s house for her to return from office. When she arrived, Kiran appealed to her to reappoint him as her driver. When Prathima refused, Kiran strangled her with her veil. Later, he slit her throat with a knife from her kitchen. Before leaving home, Kiran latched the grill door, the officer said.

He visited Prathima’s house even on Friday, but could not meet her. He even tried to meet Prathima at her office. Kiran was reportedly involved in an accident while driving the office vehicle. He allegedly used to leak information about the raids planned by the department. When this matter was brought to the notice of the department, he was removed from job, the officer said.

The DCP said, “We are yet to recover the weapon used by Kiran to commit the murder. Kiran took away Rs 15,000 from Prathima’s purse and spent it.” Further investigations are on. Meanwhile, the last rites of Prathima were performed in Tirthahalli, Shivamogga district, on Monday.

Wherever PM campaigned, BJP lost: Karnataka Chief Minister

November 7, 2023 by Nasheman

Siddaramaiah

BENGALURU: A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi targeted the Congress government in Karnataka while campaigning in poll-bound Madhya Pradesh, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said that the former’s speeches are a “bundle of lies”.

Modi had claimed that the Congress had damaged Karnataka and that development had come to a standstill in the state. He also raised doubts about Siddaramaiah completing his tenure.

“The BJP lost wherever PM Modi campaigned in Karnataka. The PM targeting the Karnataka government during his campaign in MP shows the BJP’s inefficiency. The party is yet to appoint the leader of opposition in Karnataka,” Siddaramaiah told reporters here.

Reacting to the corruption allegations made by the PM on himself and his deputy DK Shivakumar, the CM said that there are allegations of 40% commission cut on the previous BJP government. “We are investigating the matter.  There are many probe agencies under the Union Government. Without proof, one should not make allegations,” the CM said.

Modi had claimed, “Wherever the Congress government is formed by mistake, a competition to loot the state between its chief minister and his deputy is taking place, and such news is coming regularly from Karnataka.”

“I never expected a statement like this from the PM. It does not befit him,” he said. On drought relief, the CM accused the Centre of meting out step-motherly treatment to the state. “They have not released any funds. The PM said that the Congress will be unable to implement the guarantees. But we proved him wrong,” Siddaramaiah added.

Israel vows to take ‘security responsibility’ of Gaza after war

November 7, 2023 by Nasheman

JERUSALEM: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Monday that Israel will take control of “overall security” of besieged Gaza after the war, as the Hamas-run health ministry said the death toll has surged past 10,000.

Resisting calls for a ceasefire, Netanyahu said there would be no letup in the war to destroy Hamas, whose October 7 attack left 1,400 dead in Israel, most of them civilians.

The Palestinian militant group also took more than 240 people hostage, including children and elderly people, in an attack that prompted Israel’s massive bombardment of Gaza and an intensifying ground offensive.

One month since the war began, the Hamas-run health ministry said the death toll in Gaza had surpassed 10,000 people — more than 4,000 of them children.

With international criticism of Israel’s conduct of the war mounting, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Gaza was becoming a “graveyard for children”.

More than 1.5 million people in densely packed Gaza have fled their homes for other parts of the territory in a desperate search for cover, with critical aid only trickling in.

But Netanyahu told ABC News the war would continue until Israel had restored “overall security” control of Gaza.

“Israel will, for an indefinite period, will have the overall security responsibility,” he said.

“When we don’t have that security responsibility, what we have is the eruption of Hamas terror on a scale that we couldn’t imagine.”

nyahu’s comments came after the White House said the Israeli leader had discussed potential “tactical pauses” in a phone call with US President Joe Biden on Monday.

But no agreements were announced and the pair did not broach the possibility of a ceasefire.

While key Israeli ally the United States is seeking a humanitarian “pause” in the fighting, several countries and UN agencies have repeatedly called for a ceasefire.

“There will be no ceasefire — general ceasefire — in Gaza, without the release of our hostages,” Netanyahu said.

“As far as tactical, little pauses — an hour here, an hour there — we’ve had them before. I suppose we’ll check the circumstances in order to enable goods — humanitarian goods — to come in or our hostages, individual hostages, to leave,” he added.

The Israeli army said it had pounded Gaza with “significant” strikes on 450 targets over 24 hours since Sunday morning, and that troops were targeting Hamas commanders in underground tunnels.

Israeli infantry and tanks have flooded the northern half of the Gaza Strip and tightened an encirclement of Gaza City, effectively splitting the territory in two.

Israeli troops who have taken up positions near the Gaza border told AFP they felt proud to protect their country but also nervous as the war intensifies.

Stationed near Gaza, a 20-year-old soldier said he was “a bit scared to go” into the Palestinian territory if given the order.

“You don’t know if you can come back alive,” said the soldier, whose name like those of other troops cannot be published because of Israeli military censorship.

Around 30 Israeli soldiers have been killed in the offensive, the latest on Monday, according to a report from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), citing Israeli sources.

Statue of Liberty protest
Israel withdrew its troops from the Gaza Strip in 2005. A year later, Hamas won elections in Gaza, and subsequently seized control of the territory in 2007.

The Fatah party of Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas, which dominates the Palestinian Authority, only exercises limited autonomy in parts of the occupied West Bank.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken suggested last week that the Palestinian Authority should retake control of Gaza after the war, and visited the West Bank to meet Abbas on Sunday.

But Hamas said they would never accept a puppet government in Gaza and that “no force on Earth could annihilate” it, said senior Hamas official in Lebanon, Osama Hamdan.

Blinken on Tuesday concluded his latest whirlwind Middle East tour, landing in Japan for a meeting of G7 foreign ministers set to seek a common line on Gaza.

The United States has bolstered its forces in the region, deploying two carrier strike groups and other assets to drive home its message that regional actors should not seek to take advantage of the conflict.

Hamas militants fired 16 rockets from Lebanon towards northern Israel on Monday, while Yemen’s Iran-backed Huthi rebels claimed they had launched a fresh drone attack against Israel.

The Pentagon said Monday a US nuclear-powered Ohio-class submarine was in the Middle East to help prevent war from widening.

Meanwhile, in the latest protest, hundreds of US Jewish activists peacefully occupied New York’s Statue of Liberty on Monday to demand a ceasefire an end to the “genocidal bombardment” of civilians in Gaza.

“As long as the people of Gaza are screaming, we need to yell louder, no matter who attempts to silence us,” said photographer Nan Goldin at the protest.

According to the Hamas-run health ministry, Israel’s latest overnight barrage killed 292 people and hit two paediatric hospitals and Gaza’s only psychiatric hospital.

“These are massacres! They destroyed three houses over the heads of their inhabitants — women and children,” Mahmud Meshmesh, a resident of Deir al-Balah in central Gaza, told AFP.

“We have already taken 40 bodies out of the rubble,” he said as crowds prayed around corpses wrapped in white shrouds.

Israeli officials accuse Hamas of building tunnels underneath hospitals, schools and places of worship in Gaza to hide fighters, store arms and ammunition, and plan attacks — charges the militant group has denied.

Israel has air-dropped leaflets and sent text messages ordering Palestinian civilians in northern Gaza to head south. A US official said Saturday at least 350,000 civilians remained in the worst-hit areas.

The Rafah crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt reopened Monday to allow the evacuation of foreigners and dual nationals, the Hamas government said, ending a two-day closure prompted by a dispute over the passage of ambulances.

On Monday, 93 aid trucks carrying food, medicine and water crossed from Egypt into Gaza, the United Nations said, but the needs are overwhelming.

A convoy including four ambulances arrived in Egypt via the Rafah crossing on Monday, the International Committee of the Red Cross said.

“I have lost my home and have nothing left. I came here with nothing but the clothes I’m wearing,” said Dana Okal, a Swedish passport holder.

Israel’s military surrounds Gaza City many killed as Israeli warplanes hit refugee camps in Gaza

November 6, 2023 by Nasheman

Israeli airstrikes hit two refugee camps in the central Gaza Strip on Sunday, killing scores of people, according to health officials.

Gaza also lost communications on Sunday in its third total outage during the latest Israel-Hamas war, making it even more complicated to convey details of the new stage of the military offensive.

But Israel has said that it would press on with its offensive to crush Hamas, despite US appeals for brief humanitarian pauses in order to get aid to civilians.

Meanwhile, Israeli media reported on Sunday night that troops were expected to enter Gaza City within 48 hours. Strong explosions were seen in northern Gaza after nightfall, as per media reports.

The Palestinian death toll in the war has exceeded 9,700 with more than 4,000 of them children and minors, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza.

In the occupied West Bank, more than 140 Palestinians have been killed in violence and Israeli raids.

In Israel, more than 1,400 people in Israel have been killed, most of them in the October 7 Hamas attack that triggered the fighting, and 242 hostages were taken from Israel into Gaza by the militant group.

Since Wednesday last week, roughly 1,100 people have left the Gaza Strip through the Rafah crossing under an apparent agreement among the United States, Egypt, Israel and Qatar, which mediates with Hamas.

India secures second Women’s Asian Champions Trophy title, beats Japan 4-0

November 6, 2023 by Nasheman

Women's Asian Champions Trophy, India

RANCHI: The Indian women’s hockey team secured its second Women’s Asian Champions Trophy title after beating Japan by 4-0 in the title clash at Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Astroturf Hockey Stadium in Ranchi, Jharkhand on Sunday.

Sangita Kumari (17′), Neha (46′), Lalremsiami (57′) and Vandana Katariya (60′) registered their names on the scoresheet to lead India to an incredible win and their first women’s Asian Champions Trophy title after 2016, as per Olympics.com.

“Hockey India has announced a reward of Rs 3 lakh each for all the players and Rs 1.5 lakh each for all the support staff of the winning team of the Jharkhand Women’s Asian Champions Trophy Ranchi 2023. Congratulations to #TeamIndia #HockeyIndia #IndiaKaGame #JWACT2023,” tweeted Hockey India.

Following a 45-minute delayed start, the opening quarter was a closely-contested affair and India enjoyed the majority of ball possession. Japan looked to counter-attack, Yuri Nagai had a good opportunity to put his team to an early lead, but his attempt was thwarted by Indian goalkeeper Savita Punia’s timely interception.

Deepika came close to scoring for India, but she shot a little too much and missed the target.

World No. 11 Japan was compact defensively in the opening quarter but shortly after the second quarter started, Sangita Kumari opened India’s goal tally and gave them the much-needed lead. The local girl received the ball in space and converted the opportunity into a goal with a couple of touches.

Japan upped the attack and equalized via a strike from Shiho Kobayakawa, but a video review showed that the ball touched her hand while scoring and the goal was cancelled.

Towards the first half end, Japan won many penalty corners but Savita Punia guarded the goal well along with the rest of the defenders.

After the third quarter went goalless, India got their second goal through Neha via a penalty corner in the start of the final quarter.

Japan could have scored a goal through a penalty corner but Savita defended well.

After a goalless third quarter, India finally found their much-needed second goal in the third quarter. A well-worked penalty corner was finished off by Neha.

Lalremsiami and Vandana Katariya came through with two late goals after that to round off the victory for India.

Following the title win, Indian coach Janneke Schopman said, “You do not expect a scoreline of 4-0 in the final. It was tough, it was 2-0 and they got a penalty stroke and had they scored a goal, the game would have been wide open. I hoped we played better on the ball in the first half, we were a little hesitant. Savita is a great goalkeeper and did well today. The support here is amazing from fans and girls get a lot of energy from it.”

Indian skipper Savita said, “It feels good. When we came to play, we were tense because Japan is a great team. We wanted to start well. Japan gave us a good fight for three quarters. Attacking hockey is our strength. We got a bit defensive after a goal in the first quarter. We talked about playing an attacking game later.”

Telangana assembly polls 2023: Regional parties will play a key role soon, says KCR

November 6, 2023 by Nasheman

KHAMMAM: Stating that regional parties are going to play a key role in the coming days, Chief Minister and BRS supremo K Chandrasekhar Rao said the interests of states are going to be protected only if there are regional players.

Addressing election meetings in Khammam and Kothagudem on Sunday, he stated that the Congress and BJP are cut from the same cloth. “Did they (BJP and Congress) ever raise the flag of Telangana? Did they ever take the Telangana struggle on their shoulders? They only insulted us, fired at us and put us in jails whenever we started (Telangana struggle). Why would they have love (towards the state),” he said.

Stating that Khammam was in extremely bad shape when he visited during the Congress regime, the chief minister said the BRS government had transformed the city by spending thousands of crores of public funds. “During the Congress regime, people were suffering due to the shortage of power and water supply. However, people are now getting uninterrupted power supply and ample drinking water,” he added.

“After the BRS wins a record third time and forms a government in Telangana, I will inaugurate the Sita Rama Lift Irrigation Project (SRLIP),” KCR declared. Switching to Urdu, he urged the minorities to vote for the pink party, which, he said, stood up for their rights. The Congress had spent “only Rs 900 crore” for minorities during its regime while the BRS government had already allocated over Rs 12,000 crore, he averred.

Targeting Congress leaders Thummala Nageswara Rao and Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy, he termed them ‘Karkataka damanulu’ (cunning). KCR mentioned that Khammam had become peaceful now that both the leaders had left the pink party.

The BRS chief said Srinivasa Reddy had earlier prevented party candidates from contesting for an Assembly seat from the erstwhile Khammam district. “People will not tolerate such antics and taught him a befitting lesson,” he remarked.

Additionally, he urged the residents to vote for Transport Minister Puvvada Ajay Kumar, who is the BRS candidate from Khammam. Addressing the crowd in Khammam, Ajay said, “I did my utmost during my nine-year tenure as the minister for Khammam. If the people bless me again, I will continue to work for development and address the concerns of the people.”

Khammam MP Nama Nageswara Rao, Rajya Sabha member Vaddiraju Ravichandra, MLAs Kandala Upender Reddy and Sandra Venkata Veeraiah, MLC Tata Madhu and others also participated in the event.

KCR says BRS govt transformed SCCL

At the meeting in Kothagudem, the chief minister stated that the BRS government had successfully turned the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), which was ignored by the Congress during its regime, into a profitable enterprise. He highlighted that under the State government, the company’s turnover had increased from Rs 11,000 crore to Rs 33,000 crore. Furthermore, the government implemented a 3% increment to employees and created about 15,256 dependent jobs. Additionally, the compensation for the death of employees increased from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 10 lakh under the BRS government, KCR added. Approximately 22,000 house site pattas were distributed under GO 76 in Kothagudem, he stated.Kothagudem BRS candidate, Vanama Venkateswara Rao, and other party members were also in attendance at the event.

Ajay in no position to criticise others: Thummala

Former minister and Congress candidate for Khammam, Thummala Nageswara Rao, responded to BRS leaders over their allegations and remarks. He pointed out that Ajay Kumar had changed parties four times and, as a result, does not have the right to criticise others.

He also mentioned that due to Ajay Kumar, his father, Nageswara Rao, had become unpopular. Additionally, he stated that he had attempted to protect the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) until the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh. It was only when KCR requested his support that he joined the BRS, he added.

Thummala drew an analogy, likening KCR to a non-useful “vayyari bhama” and suggested that a “tumma” tree would be more beneficial for farmers. He further alleged that Ajay Kumar had misappropriated funds related to Gollapadu channel works and accused him of installing central lighting systems on small streets for commissions.

Additionally, the Congress leader claimed that he had played a role in KCR obtaining a ministerial position in former chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu’s cabinet. He said that lying was not a new occurrence for the BRS supremo, and thus, his statements should be taken with caution. Tummala said people are ready to vote against Ajay Kumar on November 30.

Submit report on drought before November 15: Karnataka CM to district ministers

November 6, 2023 by Nasheman

MYSURU: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday said that he has directed the district ministers to conduct a study on the prevailing drought in their districts and submit a report before November 15.

“I have asked the district ministers to visit all the taluks in their districts to study drought. I have asked them to meet the people to know the ground reality. Even though the Union Government has not provided funds, the State Government has released Rs 900 crore to take up drought-relief works,” he said while regretting that the Centre has neglected Karnataka in sanctioning funds for drought-relief works.
Siddaramaiah said that after several letters, the Centre released Rs 600 crore for MGNREGA works on Saturday.

“There has been a loss of Rs 33,000 crore and we have requested the Centre to release Rs 17,900 crore as per the guidelines. Our revenue, rural development, and agriculture ministers had visited Delhi to meet PM Modi. But they returned after they did not get the PM’s appointment. The PM is still unable to come to terms with Congress returning to power in Karnataka. We will write to put pressure on the Central government to release funds,” he elaborated.

On MLAs speaking on leadership change, Siddaramaiah said that he has warned the legislators and ministers not to speak on the issue in public, and should only explain the welfare programs initiated in their respective segments.

Commenting on Modi’s criticism over state guarantee schemes during election campaigns in five states, Siddaramaiah said that the Congress government is not worried about any criticism but is committed to serving the poor and farmers. Reacting to BJP former minister KS Eshwarappa’s statement that the caste census report by Kantharaju commission must be burnt, the CM said that Eshwarappa is a depreciating coin.

“His words have no value. They are all depreciating coins. BJP did not give him a ticket as he is a depreciating coin. If the report is submitted, we will accept it,” he added.

On irregularities in the KEA examination conducted in Kalaburagi where Bluetooth was used and mangal sutra and anklets were asked to be removed by candidates, the CM said that a complete investigation would be carried out. Meanwhile, Siddaramaiah on Sunday had lunch with the officials who successfully conducted the Dasara festivities.

Even though there is a practice of the district minister hosting lunch for the officials, the CM set a new precedent by attending the luncheon with the district officials and MLAs and MLCs organized by district minister HC Mahadevappa at a private hotel in Mysuru city.

Speaking on the occasion, Siddaramaiah appreciating the work of the officers during Dasara celebrations said that Mysuru will be the number one district in the state if the officers work effectively. “Officials must prepare a blueprint to take up welfare activities. Mysuru must return back to its glory. Mysuru Maharaja Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar’s irrigation, agriculture, and social welfare works must be an inspiration for us,” he said.

Amid rising air pollution in Delhi, CM Arvind Kejriwal to hold high-level meeting

November 6, 2023 by Nasheman

NEW DELHI: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has called for a high-level meeting on Monday amid rising pollution levels in the national capital.

Environment Minister Gopal Rai and other related departments will be part of the meeting.

The overall air continues to be in the ‘severe’ category for the fifth day, as per the Central Pollution Control Board.

The national capital is grappling with a massive health crisis linked to escalating pollution levels. The city has been consistently making headlines as one of the most polluted cities in the world, with air quality often reaching hazardous levels.

Doctors say, for any healthy person, a recommended AQI should be less than 50, but these days the AQI has spiked beyond 400, which could prove fatal for those suffering from lung-related diseases and even poses a risk of lung cancer.

Telangana women can benefit by up to Rs 4,000 per month if Congress voted to power, says Rahul Gandhi

November 2, 2023 by Nasheman

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi

HYDERABAD: Women in Telangana can benefit up to Rs 4,000 if Congress is voted to power in the November 30 assembly polls, by way of social pension, savings on LPG cylinder and free travel in government buses, AICC former chief Rahul Gandhi said on Thursday.

Addressing a women gathering at Ambatipalli village near Medigadda (Laxmi) barrage of Kaleshwaram project, he also said the Congress has decided to “give back” all the money allegedly “looted” by Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao.

He said, as the first step, every month, Rs 2,500 will be deposited as social pension into women’s bank accounts.

Also, Rs 1,500 will be saved as the Congress, if voted to power, will supply a LPG cylinder, which is now costing Rs 1,000, at Rs 500 and another Rs 1,000 by way of free travel on government buses.

“With all these you will benefit Rs 4,000 every month. This is called Parajala sarkar (people’s government),” he said.

Alleging that Rs 1 lakh crore was looted in Telangana, the Gandhi scion said the BRS, BJP and MIM are contesting on one side in the upcoming polls even as the fight is between Congress and the KCR-led party.

“MIM and BJP are supporting BRS. So you will have to support Congress fully to remove Dorala sarkar (feudal regime) and establish Parajala sarkar (people’s regime),” he said.

Alleging that the Kaleshwaram Project has become like an “ATM” for KCR for making money, Rahul said in order to run this machine, all the families in Telangana would have to “shell out Rs 31,500 per annum till 2040”.
