Unhealthy snacks raise risk of strokes and cardiovascular disease: Study

September 18, 2023 by Nasheman

The researchers discovered that just half of the people matched the nutritional value of their meals and snacks. This disparity has a detrimental impact on health indicators like blood sugar and fat levels, and addressing it may be as simple as changing one’s diet.

With unhealthy snacks, 25 per cent of people nullify the positive effects of healthy meals, increasing their risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease.

Dr Sarah Berry from King’s College London and chief scientist at ZOE said, “Considering 95 per cent of us snack, and that nearly a quarter of our calories come from snacks, swapping unhealthy snacks such as cookies, crisps and cakes to healthy snacks like fruit and nuts is a really simple way to improve your health.”

Contrary to what is often believed, the analysis demonstrated that snacking is not harmful as long as the snacks are nutritious. Compared to those who don’t snack at all or who nibble on harmful foods, people who frequently eat high-quality snacks like nuts and fresh fruits are more likely to have a healthy weight. Analysis revealed that high-quality snacks can help improve metabolic health and reduce appetite.

However, a quarter of the individuals claimed to consume unhealthy snacks in addition to healthy main meals. Poor-quality snacks, such as heavily processed foods and sweets, made people feel hungry and were linked to worse health markers.

Unhealthy snacks have been connected to higher BMI, visceral fat mass, and postprandial triglyceride concentrations, all of which are linked to metabolic diseases like obesity, stroke, and cardiovascular disease. Your health may also depend on when you eat your snacks. Research has shown that snacking after 9 p.m. was linked to blood indicators that were worse than at any other time. Snacks at this time typically consisted of calorie-dense, high-fat and sugar items.

Dr Kate Bermingham from King’s College London and senior scientist at ZOE said, “This study contributes to the existing literature that food quality is the driving factor in positive health outcomes from food. Making sure we eat a balanced diet of fruit, vegetables, protein and legumes is the best way to improve your health.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that the which would commence today is short but huge. He was speaking outside the new Parliament building.

“This Parliament session may be small in duration but is big on occasion; it is a session of historic developments. A speciality of this session is that the journey of 75 years is starting from a new destination. Now, while taking forward the journey from a new place, we have to make the country a developed country by 2047. For this, all the decisions of the time to come will be taken in the new Parliament building,” he said in his address to the media ahead of the five-day session.

There is an atmosphere of festivity and enthusiasm, and the country has been filled with renewed self-confidence, he said, while telling parliamentarians to give maximum time to the short session.

In an apparent reference to frequent protests by opposition members during previous sessions, often leading to disruptions of proceedings, Modi hoped everyone will shed shortcomings and carry the goodness as they move into the new building of Parliament on Ganesh Chaturthi on Tuesday.

Today will be the last day of business in the existing building before the legislature shifts to the adjacent new building on Tuesday.

Will attend CM Shinde’s press conference on Saturday as journalist if police allow: Sanjay Raut

September 16, 2023 by Nasheman

Aurangabad : Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Friday said he would attend as a journalist Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s press conference scheduled to be held here on September 16 following a meeting of the state cabinet, if police allow him to remain present there.

The state cabinet is scheduled to be held in Aurangabad on Saturday to mark the Marathwada Liberation Day, also known as Marathwada Mukti Sangram Din, celebrated on 17 September annually.

Marathwada Mukti Sangram Din marks the integration of Marathwada with India after security forces invaded Hyderabad and defeated the Nizam and his Razakar units on September 17, 1948.

Talking to a Marathi news channel, Raut said, “The Maharashtra cabinet’s meeting will take place in Aurangabad on Saturday. If the police allow and don’t stop me, I will attend the press conference of CM Eknath Shinde as a journalist after the cabinet meeting.”

“I just want to see how much CM Shinde lies,” the Rajya Sabha member, who is the executive editor of Sena (UBT) mouthpiece ‘Saamana’, said.

When asked about the purpose of his Aurangabad visit around the time of the state cabinet’s meeting, Raut said, “We came to know that Union Home Minister Amit Shah is going to visit Aurangabad. He does not meet us in Delhi. So we Shiv Sainiks planned to meet him here as this is our own land. But his tour has been cancelled.”

Targeting the state government over the expenses for the cabinet meeting in Aurangabad, he said, “They have a habit of grandeur. They have booked hotels in Aurangabad. This will take the state backwards. Booking hotels and taking cars on rent is a waste of public money.”

Raut accused the state government of not fulfilling the announcements made previously for the Marathwada region.

“A package of Rs 49,000 crore was announced in 2016 for the development of Marathwada region. How many promises have been fulfilled so far? Now it is being said that the government will announce another package of Rs 40,000 crore. The government must tell how many promises done earlier are fulfilled,” he said.

The chief minister and his wife Kamlesh Thakur presented a cheque of Rs 51 lakh to Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena at their official residence here, the statement issued here said.

“I could well understand the pain of the people and their plight during the recent monsoon fury in which more than 260 precious lives were lost and many rendered homeless, besides suffering huge losses,” he said.

Every section of society had voluntarily contributed towards the relief fund. Even children broke their piggy banks to help those in distress, the elders parted with their pension and the state government employees contributed generously from their salary to contribute towards the Aapda Raahat Kosh (disaster relief fund), he said.

Earlier, the governments of Bihar, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh had provided help to the tune of Rs 61 crore to the state to meet the relief and rehabilitation requirements. Besides temple trusts, NGOs and individuals have also come forward to help.

Mangaluru: Deputy Commissioner reassures DK residents on Dengue, Nipah virus concerns

September 16, 2023 by Nasheman

Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada (DK) district Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan on Friday reassured the public that there is no cause for concern regarding infectious diseases such as dengue and Nipah virus in the region. In an effort to educate the public about these diseases, their symptoms, transmission, prevention, and treatment, he has directed health officials and local organizations to take proactive measures.

Chairing a meeting at the DC’s office to address the control of infectious diseases, Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan provided valuable insights. He emphasized that there is no need to fear the Nipah virus, provided necessary precautions are taken. He advised people to exercise caution if bats are present near their homes and to avoid consuming fruits that may have been exposed to bites from birds. Properly washing fruits before consumption is essential, and individuals experiencing fever should seek medical attention without delay, he added.

Muhilan urged the health department staff and Asha workers to acquire comprehensive knowledge about Nipah virus symptoms from medical officers and to disseminate this information to the public. He also suggested close coordination with the forest department to identify areas with fruit bats.

The Deputy Commissioner highlighted the significance of active participation from District Wenlock Hospital, Medical Colleges, and primary health centers in combating infectious diseases. Special emphasis was placed on dengue control, which is of paramount importance, especially during the rainy season when stagnant water can become breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

To mitigate dengue risks, Muhilan recommended identifying mosquito breeding sites and taking immediate remedial measures. Awareness campaigns for dengue control were proposed at both the district and local organization levels, utilizing communication channels like WhatsApp groups. An action plan for larvicidal spraying will be developed, targeting areas with known mosquito breeding concerns. Additionally, fogging, larvicidal spraying, and larval surveys will be conducted promptly upon the discovery of dengue cases, he stated.

Pak’s caretaker PM Kakar refuses to give out general election date says job of election commission

September 16, 2023 by Nasheman

Islamabad: Pakistan’s interim Prime Minister Anwaar-ul Haq Kakar on Friday refused to give a date for the country’s general elections, asserting that it was the job of the election authorities.

Kakar was speaking at a press conference after a meeting at the PM House when he was asked if he would like to set a date for the upcoming national elections.

“If I were to announce elections, I would be engaging in an unlawful act, and as a journalist, you should be aware that if you steer us towards illegal actions and pose questions that might tempt us to break the law, then what should my response be?” he said.

He was asked the same question earlier this week and responded that it was for the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to decide a date.

The date for the general elections has become a controversial matter in Pakistan as polls should be held within a constitutionally mandated 90-day period after the dissolution of the National Assembly, which was done on August 9.

However, just days before the end of its term, the previous government endorsed the results of the countrywide census.

The decision made it mandatory for the election commission to devise new electoral districts before elections, for which it has been provided 120 days by the country’s constitution.

The ECP has announced to complete the delimitation process by November 30 and then announce election schedules, which are expected to be held in January. However, President Ari Alvi and some political parties insist the elections should be held within 90 days.

In a letter to the ECP chief this week, Alvi, who was a founding member of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, proposed November 6 as the day for the polls, but the top election body has so far not commented on the suggestion.

It is believed that polls will be held somewhere in January, but without a firm date, rumours are making rounds about the intention of the caretaker set-up to prolong its tenure. Earlier this week, Kakar clarified that the interim government had no intention of extending its term.

He had sided with the ECP and said on a Geo News programme that, per the law, deciding the date for general elections was the ECP’s prerogative.

Deepika on starring in SRK’s ‘Jawan’: Whenever he wants, I will always be there

September 16, 2023 by Nasheman

Mumbai: Actor Deepika Padukone on Friday said she never thought about the length of her role in Shah Rukh Khan-starrer “Jawan” as she has a lot of love for the actor and would always be there for him.

Deepika, who made her debut opposite Shah Rukh in “Om Shanti Om” in 2007 and has collaborated on films like “Chennai Express”, “Happy New Year” and “Pathaan”, had an extended cameo as Aishwarya Rathore in the Atlee directorial, which has become a blockbuster at the ticket window, raising close to Rs 700 crore in worldwide gross.

At the film’s success press conference, Shah Rukh joked that he and Atlee “fooled” Deepika into believing that she had a cameo in the film when she was one of the main characters.

“Deepika is feeling the most awkward, I will tell you why, because she feels, “main to dosti me chhota so role karne aa gayi thi’, but between me and Atlee, we fooled her and shot a full length movie with her.

“When she saw the film she was like, ‘Oh I am one of the main characters’…. but thank you Deepika from the bottom of our heart for being part of this film,” he said, calling the actor “a family”.

Deepika said the team of “Jawan” approached her with the part when she was shooting for Nag Ashwin’s “Project K”, now titled “Kalki 2898 AD”, in Hyderabad.

“They narrated the whole story to me and told me this very important part of Aishwarya and for me, it was not about the length of the role. It was the impact that this character is going to have on the entire film. So it was two-fold for me, one is everyone knows my love for him (SRK). Whenever he wants, I will always be there.

“But also, the movie was so special that as any actor, not just me, if offered the part, they would say yes to it because it was about the vision. I think all of us, everyone here has invested in that vision. It’s not about how big or small your role was. It was about the story we were telling, the impact that this movie was going to have on the lives of this amazing audience.”

“Jawan” features Shah Rukh in the role of Vikram Rathore and his son Azad. The movie highlights various social and political issues through the story.

Deepika’s Aishwarya is the wife of Vikram Rathore and mother of Azad. Her scenes are played out in the flashback.

Shah Rukh said he thought about Deepika playing a mother while they were shooting “Besharam rang” track for “Pathaan”.

“… I am sitting, and I look at Pooja (Dadlani, his manager) and I said, ‘ye maa ka role karegi kya?’ so I am looking at Deepika during the ‘Besharam rang’ and thinking ‘She will be very good as a mother, no,’.”

SRK said when Pooja asked Deepika, she instantly agreed.

“For her to have done this role, also as an actor, is very gutsy. I always say ‘there are no small roles, there are only small actors’. I think with this film, Deepika proves to everybody that she really is a large size actor, big size actor. Thank you Deepika,” he added.

Asked whether there were any apprehensions about playing an onscreen mother, Deepika said there were none.

“I don’t think that I am playing sultry in one movie, and a mother in the next. I personally didn’t approach it like that. I invested in the vision, in the story, if that meant I play the role of a mother, to enable the storytelling, so be it,” she said.

Shah Rukh and Deepika were joined by the film’s director Atlee as well as co-star Vijay Sethupathi at the event.

Actor Nayanthara, who played Narmada in the movie, was absent due to her mother’s birthday and SRK led the crowd to sing happy birthday for them.

The team later played a video message that she sent to express her gratitude for all the love coming her way.

“Namaste Mumbai, it is an absolute honour to be addressing all of you. Even though I’m not there in person, I want to send a big hug to my friends and fans. I wanted to be there but today there is a special occasion for my family and I wanted to spend this time with them.

“I have been reading all of your messages and I have to say it is absolutely overwhelming. Your support means the world to me and I am extremely grateful for it. And of course, a big thank you to my co-star and the entire team for giving me the opportunity to play Narmada,” the actor said.

Working on “Jawan” was a journey “filled with laughter, challenges and growth”, she added.

“Speaking of growth, I want to thank Shah Rukh sir. To share the screen with him and witness his exceptional talent and lively energy in person was truly fabulous,” she added.

The film also stars Sanya Malhotra, Priyamani, Girija Oak, Sanjeeta Bhattacharya, Lehar Khan, Aaliyah Qureshi, Ridhi Dogra, Sunil Grover and Mukesh Chhabra as well as Sanjay Dutt in a cameo appearance.

A Red Chillies Entertainment presentation, “Jawan” is produced by Gauri Khan and co-produced by Gaurav Verma.
