Border row: Karnataka suspends bus services to Maharashtra owing to protests

December 8, 2022 by Nasheman

Border row

BELAGAVI: The North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) on Wednesday suspended its services to Maharashtra after reports emerged of the buses getting damaged  in the regions bordering Belagavi district.

Both states have voiced out concerns regarding Belagavi with Maharashtra staking claim that the region should be merged with it while Karnataka has reiterated its jurisdiction over the area.

“We are operating our buses only up to Nipani (in Belagavi district) due to tension, which has been there since morning,” an officer in the North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation told PTI.

According to him, a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation bus that was coming from Maharashtra to Ranebennur was also damaged.

“The glasses of the bus were damaged. Other than this incident, some buses were defaced,” the officer added.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike again held agitations in the border regions following the defacement of buses.

The activists said that they will also retaliate with similar vigour if the buses were targeted.

In view of the tension resurfacing in the border region, the police on both sides tightened security.

Buses were provided extra security to protect the vehicles and the passengers.

The row over the region started after two Maharashtra ministers Chandrakant Patil and Shambhuraj Desai, who have been appointed by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to coordinate with the legal team dealing with the border dispute, announced their visit to Belagavi on December 6.

Following vehement protests by the pro-Kannada organisations in Maharashtra, the duo postponed their trip.

In reaction, there were protests in the western state as well.

Maharashtra has been demanding the merger of Belagavi on the ground that there is a substantial Marathi-speaking population in the border district.

However, the Karnataka government rejected their claim.

The neighbouring state has approached the Supreme Court as well.

Election update 2022:BJP establishes strong leads in Gujarat, close race with Congress in Himachal Pradesh

December 8, 2022 by Nasheman

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), in power in Gujarat since 1995, is aiming for a seventh straight term in the state.

All the exit polls have predicted a big majority for PM Modi’s party in Gujarat (with them winning 117-151 seats), while the Congress’ tally was predicted to fall to 16-51. New entrant Aam Aadmi Party’s campaign was projected by exit polls to be sound and fury signifying almost nothing — their tally was expected to be confined to between two to 13 seats.

Himachal Pradesh is expected to see a closer fight between the two main parties.

The state has not returned any incumbent government to power after 1985, but the ruling BJP, powered by PM Modi’s campaign, hopes to buck that trend. All but two exit polls have predicted an edge for them.

The saffron party has already returned to power in Uttar Pradesh, Goa, Assam, and Uttarakhand, and is now hoping to add Himachal, the home state of BJP national president JP Nadda, to that list.

A lot is at stake for the Congress too, with insiders saying that any hopes for the party’s revival has to start from Himachal. The grand old party is currently only in power in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, both of which will go to polls in 2023.

MCD polls: Aam Aadmi Part gets majority, ends BJP’s rule in Delhi civic body

December 7, 2022 by Nasheman

MCD Election Results Live Streaming: दिल्ली नगर निगम चुनाव नतीजों का पल-पल का अपडेट, यहां देखिए लाइव - MCD Election Results live streaming today 7 december 2022 Delhi municipal corporation election result

NEW DELHI: Celebrations are in full swing at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) office here on Wednesday with supporters carrying party flags distributing sweets and dancing to the beat of drums.

The AAP crossed the halfway mark gaining a majority in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections, thus uprooting the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) 15-year-long rule in the city’s civic body.

Senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia thanked the people of Delhi for voting his party to victory in the MCD polls and said it was their mandate that helped it defeat the “world’s biggest and most negative party”.

Addressing the people around 3 pm, AAP’s national convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said, “I congratulate the people of Delhi for this win and thank them for bringing change.”

As of 2 pm, the AAP has won 130 wards out of 250 so far.

The BJP, which has been ruling the civic body since 2007, managed to win 99 seats with the party leading on 6 seats till 2 pm.

The Congress was lagging far behind, winning just seven seats.

Three Independent candidates, including Shakeela Begum from Seelampur in northeast Delhi, have also won.

In a fiercely fought battle, the BJP began the day by leading in the initial trends for nearly one and a half hour initially, however, the trends started shifting as the AAP gained the lead and maintained thereafter until the final results were declared.

“The BJP has got the answer today that the people of Delhi vote for those who work, and not for the ones who defame. The BJP fielded its MPs, Ministers, CBI and ED, but the people of Delhi still voted for the AAP. The people have given a befitting reply to the BJP for the allegations that it levelled against Kejriwal. We will make Delhi the most beautiful city in the world,” AAP leader Raghav Chadha said earlier.

Polling took place on December 4 with about 50 per cent voter turnout.

This was the first civic election after the fresh delimitation exercise.

There were 272 wards in Delhi and three corporations – NDMC, SDMC, and EDMC in Delhi from 2012-2022 that later reunified into an MCD that had formally come into existence on May 22.

PM Modi urges leaders of all parties to make winter session more productive collectively

December 7, 2022 by Nasheman

Narendra Modi

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday urged leaders of all parties to make collective efforts to make Parliament’s winter session more productive.

Speaking to media ahead of the session’s start, he said parliamentarians, including from the opposition, have told him that disruption and adjournment in Parliament are not good and this also denies younger MPs an opportunity to learn.

He also said that India hosting the G20 summit, which will be held next year, is not merely a diplomatic event but also a chance to showcase the country’s capabilities before the world.

The prime minister said he had a cordial discussion with leaders of different parties recently at an all-party meeting on G20 and expressed hope that it will be reflected in Parliament as well.

T20 WC: India denies visa for Pak’s visually impaired cricket team, says report

December 7, 2022 by Nasheman

ISLAMABAD: India has reportedly turned down the visas of Pakistan’s visually impaired cricket team for the ongoing T20 World Cup on “political grounds”, according to a media report.

In a statement, the Pakistan Blind Cricket Council (PBCC) said India has denied the team visas for the tournament, which is taking place in the neighbouring country from December 5 to 17, Dawn reported.

“This unfortunate incident has left the Pakistan blind cricket team in the lurch,” the council said, pointing out that the country had been runners-up in 2012 and 2017, the report said.

In the statement issued on Tuesday, the PBCC highlighted that Pakistan had beaten current T20 world champion India five times in a row during two tri-nation competitions in 2021 and 2022, winning both events.

“It was highly likely that Pakistan and India would have locked horns in the final of [the] ongoing World Cup, and considering the current form of [the] Green Shirts, Pakistan had high chances to win the World Cup,” the statement said.

The PBCC went on to say that as per the information available, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs had denied the players clearance on “political grounds”.

“The PBCC strongly condemns this discriminating act of India as sports should be above regional politics… Our counterpart, the Blind Cricket Association in India, pleaded [with] its government for Pakistan’s clearance, but nothing was heard.”

The statement added that the Indian government’s “hatred” for Pakistan had also violated the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Dawn reported.

“This discriminating act will have serious consequence[s] on global blind cricket as we at World Blind Cricket will take stern action against them and may not allow India to host future international events,” the statement said.

Goncalo Ramos bags hat-trick as Portugal crush Swiss to reach World Cup quarters

December 7, 2022 by Nasheman

DOHA: Goncalo Ramos justified the shock decision to drop Cristiano Ronaldo by scoring a hat-trick on his full debut as Portugal demolished Switzerland 6-1 on Tuesday to power into the World Cup quarter-finals.

The 21-year-old Ramos, who started instead of Ronaldo, became the youngest player to strike three times in a World Cup knockout match since Pele in 1958.

Pepe, Raphael Guerreiro and Rafael Leao were also on target for a rampant Portugal, who booked a showdown with Morocco on Saturday for a place in the last four in Qatar.

Ronaldo, 37 and now without a club after his departure from Manchester United, has hogged the headlines during the tournament while looking a shadow of his former self.

The only man to score at five World Cups, Ronaldo was left out by coach Fernando Santos against the Swiss following his angry response to being substituted in the last group game.

It was a bold call to omit a player with a record 118 international goals in favour of giving a full debut to Ramos, the Benfica striker who had played just 33 minutes across three previous appearances.

But it took just 17 minutes for Ramos to reward Santos’ faith, and to achieve something Ronaldo has never done — score in a World Cup knockout game.

Joao Felix clipped delicately into the feet of Ramos, who quickly swivelled past Fabian Schaer and rifled into the roof of the net past a stunned Yann Sommer.

Otavio, who returned to the Portugal midfield after injury in their opening match, shot straight at Sommer before Ramos did likewise moments later.

Xherdan Shaqiri drew a fingertip stop from Diogo Costa with a dipping free-kick from distance, but Portugal soon had their second.

Bruno Fernandes whipped in a corner and the 39-year-old Pepe towered above the Swiss defence to powerfully head home.

Diogo Dalot hacked Remo Freuler’s header off the line after Diogo Costa failed to properly deal with a cross, but the Swiss simply had no answers against an irresistible Portugal.

Ramos turned in his second from close range six minutes into the second half from Dalot’s cross down the right.

He then turned provider by playing in Guerreiro to lash in another just four minutes later as the Swiss defence was ruthlessly ripped apart.

It was also Ramos who inadvertently glanced a corner towards Manuel Akanji at the far post as the Manchester City centre-back pulled one back for Switzerland.

Ramos completed his treble after more outstanding work from Felix, nonchalantly dinking over Sommer with one of his final touches before making way for Ronaldo.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s introduced elicited the biggest roar of the night. Ronaldo did have the ball in the back of the net but it was ruled out for a clear offside.

Leao capped off a sensational Portugal performance with a terrific curling strike in stoppage time.

Karnataka: 3 youths critical as SUV runs over them twice

December 7, 2022 by Nasheman

MYSURU: In a case of road rage, an SUV driver attempted to kill three youths by running over his vehicle on them twice for questioning him why he did not put the indicator on before taking a turn. The victims who sustained serious injuries are battling for their lives at a hospital. After a verbal duel between the SUV driver Darshan and the three youth, Darshan started his car and ran over all the three. As they were still lying on the road, he drove the vehicle in reverse and ran over them again

The Saraswathipuram police have arrested Darshan, who is in his 20s, on Tuesday, on charges of attempt to murder (IPC sec 307), voluntarily causing hurt (IPC 324) and intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace (IPC 504).

The three youths are Rahul, Prajwal and Anand, who are also in their 20s. Rahul, an MTech graduate received severe injuries on his head and ribs.

FIR filed, SUV driver arrested

Prajwal, a BCA graduate sustained injuries to his spinal cord, ribs and left leg bone which broke into three pieces and Anand, who owns a fast food centre, received injuries all over his body.

The incident happened on Monday evening when Rahul and Prajwal, who are cousins, along with their friends attended a function and had returned home in Sharadadevinagar. But one of their friends, who had come with them for the function, called and told them that he had left his room key in the car. So both left the house in the car (Maruti Bolero) to give the room key to their friend.

When they were travelling near Taralabalu Junction, a speeding SUV (Toyota Fortuner) driven by Darshan, whose parents were also in the car, came from behind, overtook the Bolero and took an immediate turn without giving any signal. The youth who applied sudden brakes to avoid hitting the SUV, asked the SUV driver to put the indicator on before taking a turn. This provoked Darshan and his father Vasu. While Darshan stopped the vehicle, his father Vasu came out of the vehicle and hit Rahul who was in the driver’s seat. Darshan too joined his father and used abusive language and beat the youth.

Prajwal’s father Nagaraj said that while the three youth walked a little distance from the spot, Darshan went and sat in the car. His parents were still standing near the SUV. Prajwal turned back to pick his spectacles which had fallen on the road during the clash. “Darshan’s mother, who saw Prajwal coming back, told her son to hit him, following which he started his car and ran over all three”, Nagaraj said.
Meanwhile, an FIR has been filed against Darshan and he has been arrested.

December 6: Babri Masjid demolition remembered as ‘black day’

December 7, 2022 by Nasheman

CHENNAI: India on Tuesday remembered the demolition of Babri Masjid by a mob of Kar Sevaks at Ayodhya 30 years ago.

Dr Audrey Truschke, Associate Prof of South Asian history at Rutgers University-Newark noted in a tweet that, “A priceless piece of Indian heritage, destroyed by an iconoclastic Hindu nationalist mob 30 years ago, today.

A special CBI court in Lucknow on September 30, 2020 had acquitted all those, including prominent BJP leaders L K Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and Uma Bharati, who were accused of conspiracy in the case. The court ruled out the conspiracy theories in the demolition of the Mughal era monument.

On the 30th anniversary of the demolition, Muslim women organised a protest in Hyderabad and raised black flags in Saidabad area on Monday, reports said.

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi took to Twitter to state that December 6 would remain a black day for Indian democracy. “The desecration and demolition of #BabriMasjid is a symbol of injustice. Those responsible for its destruction were never convicted. We will not forget it & we will ensure that future generations remember it too,” he added.

In Kolkata, the civil society, including political personalities, teachers, and renowned journalists, reportedly recollected the fateful day in Indian history.  The left parties took out a rally on Tuesday, NewsClick reported.

In a report, NewsClick quoted journalist and editor of the national daily Times of India, Sougata Roy, as saying that December 6 was an assault on the secular fabric of the country, and the danger persists even today.

“Those who did it, didn’t only demolish a mosque but attacked the very premises of the Constitution. Also, it is a fact that the Supreme Court later allowed the construction of Ram Mandir in the same place. What surprised me on that day (December 6, 1992) was how a city, which was otherwise accommodative and friendly to all religions, changed overnight, showing communal shades in the society,” he said.

The report also quoted poet Mandakranta Sen as saying that December 6 is a black day for democracy in the country, and every December 6, “we double our resolves to fight against the communal hate mongers.”

He said, “The fundamentalists eat, drink and make merry with religions. December 6 is a day to realise not to damage any place of worship but to take everybody along towards the goal of people being able to sleep with a full belly at night.”

A five-judge constitution bench of the apex court had on November 9, 2019, cleared the way for the construction of a Ram Temple at the disputed site at Ayodhya and directed the Centre to allot a five-acre plot to the Sunni Waqf Board for building a mosque. Following this, a Bhoomi puja was held for the construction of the Ram temple at the Babri Masjid demolition site.

With eye on 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Nadda asks BJP leaders to launch ‘house to house’ campaign

December 7, 2022 by Nasheman

BJP chief J P Nadda during the BJP event at Ramlila Maidan on Sunday

NEW DELHI: With an eye on the next Lok Sabha polls in 2024, BJP president J P Nadda on Tuesday asked party leaders to launch a “house to house” campaign to reach out to people and build an “emotional connect” with them.

Addressing the party’s office-bearers from across the country, he said all state units will launch the exercise and said it should not be limited to handing over some party literature to people

Party members should discuss issues with people, understand their problems and help them in addressing their concerns, he said, according to a party statement.

In the meeting, intensive discussions were also held on a number of assembly elections in 2023, including in Tripura, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, and presentations were made, it said.

The highlight of Nadda’s address on the last day of the two-day meeting was his emphasis on connecting with people.

“BJP workers should build direct contact with every home through the ‘house to house’ campaign so that they are seen as members of the households, standing with them in most difficult times,” he said.

India’s G-20 presidency also came in for a discussion with leaders stressing that people should be informed about this “global achievement” of the country.

Nadda also noted that various welfare measures of the Modi government have uplifted the living standards of over 60 crore people and said the BJP should reach out to them.
