Mahela Jayawardene returns to Mumbai Indians as head coach

October 14, 2024 by Nasheman

Mahela Jayawardene returns to Mumbai Indians as head coach
Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene

Mumbai: The five-time Indian Premier League winners Mumbai Indians on Sunday announced roping in former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene as their head coach with a major overhaul on the horizon with a mega auction to follow.

Jayawardene has had a similar role with the franchise from 2017-2022 and oversaw their title-winning campaigns in 2017, 2019 and 2020-21.

Jayawardene replaces former South African wicketkeeper-batter Mark Boucher who had a two-year stint as MI’s head coach in 2023 and 2024.

Mumbai Indians qualified for the knockouts in the 2023 edition but endured a poor run this year, finishing last with only four wins in 14 matches.

“My journey within the MI family has always been one of evolution. In 2017, the focus was on bringing together a talented group of individuals to play the best cricket ever and we did very well,” Jayawardene said in a release issued by the franchise.

“Now to return, at the same moment in history, where we look ahead at the future and the opportunity to further strengthen the love of MI, build on the vision of the owners, and continue to add to the history of Mumbai Indians, is an exciting challenge I am looking forward to,” he added.

Jayawardene became MI’s global head of cricket and saw the expansion of the franchise’s other teams. He worked with the coaching staff as MI (WPL), MI NY (MLC) and MIW (ILT20) won a trophy each.

“With our global teams having found their footing within their ecosystems, the opportunity to bring him back to MI arose,” said team owner Akash Ambani.

Mumbai: Mumbai Police have arrested three suspects in connection with the murder of former Maharashtra minister and NCP leader Baba Siddiqui. The suspects, Gurmail Baljit Singh (23) from Haryana, Dharmaraj Rajesh Kashyap (19) from Uttar Pradesh, and Pravin Lonkar (29) from Pune, are linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. This group has previously issued threats to Bollywood actor Salman Khan. Gurmail and Dharmaraj allegedly opened fire on Siddiqui during the attack.

The murder took place on Saturday when the assailants, taking advantage of the sound of firecrackers, shot at Siddiqui. He was immediately taken to Lilavati Hospital but later succumbed to his injuries.

According to police, the conspiracy was devised in Patiala jail with help from the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, naming Mohammad Zeeshan Akhtar as a key conspirator. One of the suspects, Pravin Lonkar, was arrested after his brother, Shubham, posted on social media claiming responsibility for the murder, though he later deleted the post.

Police are still searching for other individuals involved, including Shivkumar Gautam, another shooter who remains absconding. Gurmail Singh has a criminal record, having been arrested in a previous murder case in 2019 but later released on bail. His family claims to have disowned him more than a decade ago.

Dharmaraj Kashyap’s family expressed shock at his involvement, stating that he had left home two months ago to work at a scrapyard in Pune, and they had no knowledge of his activities since then.

WHO felicitates India for elimination of trachoma as public health problem

October 10, 2024 by Nasheman

New Delhi: India was on Tuesday felicitated by the World Health Organisation for the elimination of trachoma as a public health problem, making it the third country in the region after Nepal and Myanmar to achieve this feat.

The WHO also felicitated Bhutan for achieving interim targets for cervical cancer elimination, Maldives and Sri Lanka for Hepatitis B control in children, Timor-Leste for eliminating lymphatic filariasis and six countries for achieving SDG and global targets for reducing under-five mortality and stillbirth rates.

“India’s success is due to the strong leadership of its government and the commitment of ophthalmologists and other cadres of health-care workers.

“They worked together with partners to ensure effective surveillance, diagnosis and management of active trachoma, provision of surgical services for trichiasis, and promotion of water, sanitation and hygiene, particularly facial cleanliness, among communities,” said Saima Wazed, Regional Director WHO South-East Asia, at ‘Public Health Awards’ event at the Seventy Seventh Regional Committee Session being held here.

Trachoma, a leading cause of infectious blindness, is a chlamydial infection that happens due to lack of hygiene and unclean water supply and can spread by contact with the eye, nose or throat secretions of a person suffering from the disease or indirectly via flies.

Bhutan was recognised for reaching the 2030 interim targets towards elimination of cervical cancer as a public health problem, the first country in the region to achieve this significant public health milestone, the WHO said in a statement.

The interim 90-70-90 targets are 90 per cent girls fully vaccinated against Human papillomavirus (HPV vaccine) by 15 years of age; 70 per cent of women screened with a high-performance test by 35 years of age and again by 45 years of age and 90 per cent of women identified with cervical disease provided treatment, the statement said.

“The success of the Royal Government of Bhutan is driven by strong leadership, favourable health policies, organised health systems, well-defined country priorities, motivated health workforce, and efficient coordination by the Ministry of Health.

“The achievement is especially commendable considering that the major part of the capacity building was carried out when COVID-19 was at its peak,” the Regional Director said.

Lauding Maldives and Sri Lanka for achieving hepatitis B control, the Regional Director said that preventing hepatitis B infection in children substantially reduces chronic infections and cases of liver cancer and cirrhosis in adulthood.

Bhutan was also recognised for achieving the SDG and global 2030 targets of reducing under-5 mortality and stillbirth rates.

Timor-Leste was awarded for the elimination of lymphatic filariasis as a public health problem. It is the fifth country in the Region to eliminate lymphatic filariasis.

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Indonesia, Maldives, Sri Lanka and Thailand were awarded for achieving the SDG and global targets for the reduction of under-5 mortality, neonatal mortality and stillbirth rates, the statement said.

The SDG target 3.2 for under-5 mortality rate is to reduce to 25 or less per 1000 live births and for neonatal mortality rate is to reduce to 12 or less per 1000 live births by 2030. The 2030 still birth rate reduction target is 12 or fewer still births per 1000 births.

*Program spearheaded by National Livelihood Mission-Karnataka

Devanahalli (Bengaluru Rural), October 8: Minister for medical education, skill development, entrepreneurship and livelihood, Dr. Sharan Prakash Patil, emphasized the pivotal role of women empowerment in advancing Karnataka’s socio-economic development during the launch of the state government’s Akka Café initiative on Tuesday.

Speaking at the inauguration, Dr. Patil underscored the initiative’s transformative potential for women in both urban and rural areas, fostering self-reliance and entrepreneurship. “The Akka Café initiative will create a lasting impact on Karnataka’s socio-economic landscape by empowering women, especially in rural areas, and promoting entrepreneurship,” he said.

Akka Café, introduced by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the 2024-25 budget, is aimed at bolstering economic empowerment for women and creating sustainable livelihoods. The program specifically supports women entrepreneurs, particularly from Self-Help Groups (SHGs), by offering them opportunities to manage and operate state-of-the-art cafés. These cafés will showcase local cuisine while adhering to high standards of quality and hygiene.

In its first phase, the government plans to establish 50 cafés across the state, blending rural and urban locations. SHG women will manage these cafés, receiving up to Rs 15 lakh in grants for setup costs, including infrastructure support. In addition, 2500 coffee kiosks will be opened across the state. Rural women will trained with the help of central coffee board. For this Rs 25 crore has been set aside

This aligns with the government’s broader vision of promoting sustainable livelihoods and empowering women economically.

The National Livelihood Mission-Karnataka (NLM) is implementing the Akka Café initiative through the Startup Village Entrepreneurship Program (SVEP) under the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM), aimed at encouraging entrepreneurship and self-employment in rural areas.

To ensure the success of the initiative, NLM has partnered with IHM-Bengaluru to provide SHG women with the necessary skills to manage the cafés effectively. Additionally, NLM is piloting a bakery unit, also run by SHG women entrepreneurs, with training facilitated by a partner NGO. This bakery unit will serve as a cloud kitchen, supplying items like cookies, muffins, and cakes to Akka Cafés in Bengaluru, while also operating a premium bakery outlet in Devanahalli. The bakery unit, backed by innovative technology and sound business practices, will provide an additional revenue stream for women entrepreneurs, further enhancing their economic independence.

The launch ceremony was attended by Food and Civil Supplies Minister and Bengaluru Rural District Incharge Minister KH Muniyappa, additional chief secretary Uma Mahadevan, NRLM mission director PI Sree Vidya, Bangalore rural DC N Shiva Shankar, Bangalore rural ZP CEO KN Anuradha

Dinesh Gundu Rao questions BJP’s stance on POCSO case against former CM Yediyurappa

Dinesh Gundu Rao questions BJP’s stance on POCSO case against former CM Yediyurappa

Bengaluru: Karnataka Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao on Tuesday hit out at the BJP for not taking action against former Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa against whom a Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) case has been registered.

He said the central government did a commendable job by suspending the National Film Award to be presented to choreographer Jani Master citing allegations of crime under POCSO Act

Anyone who is under investigation or inquiry for sexual harassment or molestation should not be honoured, the Minister said, adding that it was a good decision by the central government.

However, the party did not adopt the same yardstick when it came to Yediyurappa, the Health Minister said.

“However, my question is regarding B S Yediyurappa, who is facing a POCSO inquiry. An FIR has been filed, the CID has investigated the matter, and now the trial is set to begin. Why is the BJP not taking any action against Yediyurappa, especially considering the serious charge of sexual harassment of a 17-year-old girl?” Rao sought to know.

Stating that a chargesheet has been filed against Yediyurappa, the Minister said the “minimum action” the BJP should have taken is to remove him from “his post in the central committee”.

“Why are they keeping him? He is facing a Lokayukta inquiry for corruption, and now he’s facing a POCSO trial. When such serious allegations exist, especially concerning women, why is the BJP acting inconsistently?” Rao asked.

Yediyurappa is a member of the BJP parliamentary board, and central election committee.
