DHONI ADVISES T10 CRICKET LEAGUE ORGANIZERS ON BALL CHANGE

November 21, 2017 by Nasheman

The owners and organizers of the T10 Cricket League to be held at the iconic Sharjdhoni cricketave been unanimous in picking up the tips offered by former Indian captain M.S. Dhoni on further ensuring the success of this new and exciting format.

Dhoni was on a visit to Dubai last week to inaugurate the MS DhoniCricket Academy jointly launched by Parvez Khan’s Pacific Sports Club and Aarka Sports. MS Dhoni Cricket Academy will also expand to Ajman in partnership with Ajman Cricket club and receive full support from Ajman Cricket Council. EDEN GARDENS AJMAN, the international standard cricket ground in Ajman has also been offered to MS Dhoni Cricket Academy as their home ground to play matches.

During the course of the MS Dhoni Cricket Academy at Pacific Sports Club inauguration, Dhonispent time with the Chairman of the T10 league, Shaji Ul Mulk and Board Member& co-owner of Maratha Arabians, Parvez Khan to share his views about the future of T10 and ways of improving the format.

One of the points discussed was the use of Pink Ball and the merit of using the same against the white ball. Dhoni suggested the white Kookaburra turf balls instead of the pink balls because the latter would be difficult to spot against the bright colors of the uniforms of the players and the depth and movements in the crowd. The white ball would stand out by contrast especially under the lights. This recommendation has been approved and the decision taken to stick with the white balls.

Mulk said, “We are pioneers blazing a new trail and we will take on board expert advice from an experienced legend like Dhoni if it means it makes for a better tournament. Our aim is to ensure T10 is a fixture on the global itinerary for cricket. As I have said, the ninety minute game brings it on par with all other top sports like soccer and hockey.”

In case of rain, the minimum number of overs to be bowled by both teams is 5 overs for a result. The Duckworth Lewis Method will be employed in deciding the score to be chased.

Sharjah, which holds the Guinness Book of Records for staging the maximum number of one dayers globally now becomes the host for the first time ever staging of this new limited over game. With big name players from around the world having been drafted into the six teams, the cricketing world is watching very closely to see if this is the way the game is going.

India strike twice after Kohli century, leave SL at 8/2

November 20, 2017 by Nasheman

Kolkata: Virat Kohli completed his 50th international century in testing circumstances before Indian pacers dealt a double blow to Sri Lanka to keep the first Test alive at tea on day five here.

Chasing a tricky target of 231, Sri Lanka were eight for two in their second innings at the break with Mohammad Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar removing openers Sadeera Samarawickrama and Dimuth Karunaratne. Kohli declared India’s second innings at 352 for eight after reaching his 18th Test hundred and 50th in international cricket.

Resuming the day at 171/1, India lost their first wicket with addition of 21 runs as Lokesh Rahul (79) once again failed to convert his fifty. Wickets kept falling thereafter with Suranga Lakmal (3/93) and Dasun Shanaka (3/76) returning with three wickets each.

But Kohli stood tall amid ruins with an unbeaten 104, his first at Eden as he also equalled Sunil Gavaskar’s feat of 11 hundreds — the highest number of Test hundreds as Indian captain. Kohli, whose previous best at Eden Gardens was 45, also survived an LBW dismissal on 72 off Lakmal.

After being circumspect against Lakmal, the Indian skipper slowly got into his groove and hammered him for a six with an inside-out shot to get into the 90s. Looking unperturbed, Kohli once again took on the Lankan pace spearhead with a horizontal six over cover to get to his hundred in style.

isl: Dravid becomes Bengaluru FC ambassador

November 14, 2017 by Nasheman

With exactly a week before their Indian Super League (ISL) opener, Bengaluru FC announced legendary cricketer and former India captain Rahul Dravid as their ambassador for the upcoming football season.

Speaking on the association, Dravid said he was thrilled at now being a part of the Blues, whose fortunes he has been following for a while now.

Bengaluru played in the I-League for the past four years. They have moved to ISL this season.

“It’s great to be an ambassador for Bengaluru FC, a team who I have been tracking across the last four seasons. Also, the connect is instant given I am a Bengaluru boy,” Dravid said in a statement.

“The way the city has responded to Bengaluru FC has been tremendous and the club has some of the most passionate fans. The ISL will be a new chapter in the club’s history and I’m looking forward to being part of it in my capacity with Bengaluru FC,” the 44-year-old said.

“It’s been terrific to see the kind of progress Bengaluru FC has made over the last four years. It’s been one of the most professionally run teams and the kind of engagement they have been able to create with the fans and the people of this city has been really nice to see,” he added.

Bengaluru FC CEO Parth Jindal felt the club has found a perfect fit in Dravid to be ambassador.

“Getting Rahul Dravid involved with Bengaluru FC is a huge honour for all of us. Being a true Bengalurian and a believer in youth, we can think of no one who imbibes the values and ethics of this club more than him,” he said.

The Blues kick off their debut season in the ISL with a home fixture against Mumbai City FC on November 19 at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium.

India, NZ battle-ready for series finale

November 6, 2017 by Nasheman

(AP Photo/Tsering Topgyal)

Thiruvananthapuram: With series levelled at 1-1, India and New Zealand will aim to outplay each other in the third and final Twenty20 International match to seal the series at the Greenfield International Stadium here on Tuesday.

But the spectators might not witness full 20-overs each side because the series decider here is under rain threat.

The meteorological office here has also predicted that the weather will be generally cloudy with a few spells of rain or thundershowers starting from Sunday till Wednesday.

Apart from this, it will be a thrilling contest between the two team which are evenly matches on the paper as well as on the field.

To clinch the series, India have to display a better show in both batting and bowling department while New Zealand would like to continue with the same momentum.

India, comprehensive beat the visitors in the first match at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi. In the second match, New Zealand bounced back in style and defeated India by 40 runs.

Opting to bat first on winning the toss, the visitors rode on an unbeaten quickfire century by opener Colin Munro to post 196/2 in their allotted 20 overs. Munro batted through the innings, smashing 109 runs off 58 deliveries.

In reply, the hosts could only manage to post 156/7.

So, in order to beat the visitors, Indian batsmen have to click this time. The middle-order batsmen like Shreyas Iyer, Manendra Singh Dhoni, Hardik Pandya have to click in unison.

The bowling department was also seemed struggling on the flat pitch. Apart from pacer Jasprit Bumrah, no other bowlers troubled the batsmen in the previous match.

Spinners also failed to step up to the occasion and were smashed all around the park. But, in the decider, the gloomy conditions and pitch might favour India.

India skipper Virat Kohli also have to make the plan for the Duckworth Lewis method which might come in the play.

New Zealand, on the other hand, displayed a brilliant performance. There only problem is the consistency.

In the first match New Zealand were outplayed in every department of the game and in the second match they grouped together and showed their class. So, in order to seal the deal this time they have to repeat the same performance.

The fans might see a interesting battle between both the teams if India and New Zealand played as per the expectations.

Squads

India: Virat Kohli (Captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Lokesh Rahul, Manish Pandey, Shreyas Iyer, Dinesh Karthik, MS Dhoni (WK), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj.

New Zealand : Kane Williamson (c), Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, Trent Boult, Tom Bruce, Colin de Grandhomme, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls, Adam Milne, Colin Munro, Glenn Phillips (wk).

India stun Japan 4-2, enter women’s Asia Cup final

November 4, 2017 by Nasheman

Kakamigahara: The Indian women’s hockey team continued its splendid run and came up with an over-all performance to stun defending champions Japan 4-2 in the semi-final of the Asia Cup hockey tournament, here Friday.

Goals from Gurjit Kaur (7th, 9th minutes), Navjot Kaur (9th) and Lalremsiami (38th) ensured India’s entry into Sunday’s final where they will face China.

India had earlier defeated an unpredictable China 4-1 in the league stage of the tournament.

Against Japan, the Indians got off to a rollicking start by earning back-to-back penalty corners to put pressure on the host nation.

Dragflicker Gurjit Kaur gave India a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute when she improvised the injection to send the ball past Japanese goalkeeper Akio Tanaka.

Two minutes later, Navjot Kaur doubled India’s lead when she struck a field goal from a perfect assist by forward Vandana Katariya.

Almost immediately, India won a penalty corner and Gurjit was yet again on target as she gave India a commanding 3-0 in no time.

India won another penalty corner in the first quarter but this time Tanaka made a fine save.

While the first 15 minutes belonged to India, the defending champions made a strong comeback in the second quarter.

Japan unleashed a well coordinated attack on the Indian defence and found space for Shiho Tsujii to score past Indian custodian Savita in the 17th minute.

The next few minutes saw India’s defence put to test by the Japanese.

Yui Ishibashi gave India jitters when she scored another field goal to close the gap to 2-3 in the 28th minute.

From there on, the Indians were needed to play cautiously and not make impulsive decisions. This was exactly what they did after the 10-minute break at halftime.

While Savita made a brilliant save to deny Japan from a penalty corner at the start of the third quarter, Lalremsiami scored a sensational field goal in the 38th minute to extend India’s lead to 4-2.

The final 15 minutes of the match continued to remain tense as Japan won two penalty corners but Savita stood like a rock in front of the goal to deny the hosts.

India pip Japan to reach women’s Asia Cup hockey final

November 3, 2017 by Nasheman

Kakamigahara: India set their date with China in the final of the 9th women’s Asia Cup after beating hosts Japan 4-2 in the semi-final in Kakamigahara on Friday.

The Indian women rode on a brace from Gurjit Kaur and field goals from Navjot Kaur and Lalremsiami to advance to a fourth Asia Cup final. India won the title in 2004 and finished runners-up in 1999 and 2009.

Gurjit gave India a perfect start, successfully converting a penalty corner in the seventh minute before Navjot’s field goal in the ninth minute made it 2-0 for the tourists.

In the same minute, Gurjit inflated India’s lead to 3-0 with a brilliant field goal.

But Japan was no pushover. It managed to dominate the Indians in the second quarter and reduced the deficit to 2-3 through field goals from Shiho Tsujii (17’) and Yui Ishibashi (28’).

The third quarter saw Lalremsiami score her first goal of the tournament to put India ahead 4-2, and the defenders did well to keep the Japanese at bay thereon.

India entered the knockout stage of the tournament following big wins over Singapore 10-0, China 4-1 and Malaysia 2-0 to top their pool, and on Thursday defeated Kazakhstan 7-1 in the quarter-final.

On Sunday, India will aim to avenge their 3-5 loss to China in 2009 as the winner of this year’s edition will qualify for the 2018 World Cup in England.

India beat Malaysia in women’s hockey Asia Cup

October 31, 2017 by Nasheman

(AFP)

Kakamigahara: India continued their winning form as they beat Malaysia 2-0 in their last Pool A match at the Womens Asia Cup held at Kakamigahara Kawasaki Stadium here on Tuesday.

Vandana Katariya (54th minute) and Gurjit Kaur (55th) scored for India’s third successive win in the pool stage.

The win ensured a quarter-final berth as India head the points table with nine points.

The first quarter saw both teams play cautiously. With Malaysia playing defensive hockey, India threaded patiently without making any unforced errors that would bring advantage to Malaysia.

Having ended the first quarter in a stalemate, Malaysia put India on the back foot when they won the first penalty corner of the match in the initial minutes of the second quarter.

However, an alert Rajani Etimarpu made a brilliant save. The next few minutes saw both teams trade penalty corners. While India earned one penalty corner, Malaysia were awarded two but they didn’t lead to goals.

Both teams played out evenly in the third quarter too. Another penalty corner won by Malaysia was not capitalised by them, ending the third quarter too in a stalemate.

India held their nerves to turn the match around in the fourth quarter as they came up with a strong finish. First, forward Vandana Katariya scored a sensational field goal in the 54th minute to give India a 1-0 lead.

The following minute saw dragflicker Gurjit Kaur convert a penalty corner taking India’s lead to 2-0 that put pressure on the Malaysian unit.

Though Malaysia won a penalty corner at the start of the fourth quarter, their poor conversion dented their hopes.

Though the Malaysians made desperate attempts to score in the dying minutes of the match, the Indian defence kept away the attackers.
