Lionel Messi retires from international football after loss in Copa America final

June 27, 2016 by Nasheman

Messi

East Rutherford: Lionel Messi sensationally announced his retirement from international football on Sunday after Argentina crashed to an upset defeat against Chile in the final of the Copa America.

The heartbroken Barcelona superstar was distraught after missing a spot-kick as Chile snatched victory in a penalty shoot-out — Messi’s fourth straight defeat in a major final while representing Argentina.

“For me the national team is over,” the crestfallen 29-year-old told reporters.

“I’ve done all I can, I’ve been in four finals and it hurts not to be a champion.

“It’s a hard moment for me and the team, and it’s difficult to say, but it’s over with the Argentina team.”

Messi’s dramatic announcement followed Argentina’s third loss in a major final since 2014.

They were beaten 1-0 by Germany in the final of the World Cup in 2014 and lost on penalties, also to Chile, in the final of the 2015 Copa America.

Messi also tasted defeat with Argentina in the final of the 2007 Copa America.

Despite a glittering career that has seen him be named FIFA World Player of the Year on no fewer than five occasions, Messi has often faced baffling criticism from Argentina fans.

Although universally regarded as one of the greatest footballers ever, he has regularly been criticised for his failure to land a major title in the colours of Argentina.

Messi’s failure to match the achievements in the Argentina jersey of Diego Maradona, who single-handedly carried the team to victory in the 1986 World Cup, has often been held against him.

Maradona himself has often taken potshots at Messi, criticizing him on the eve of the tournament for a perceived “lack of personality.”

“He’s a really good person, but he has no personality,” Maradona said in Paris shortly before the start of Euro 2016.

“He lacks the character to be a leader.”

Messi’s bombshell decision comes after a gruelling season which was disrupted by injury last year.

He recovered to help Barcelona win the Spanish title once more and was relishing the prospect of leading Argentina to glory in the Copa America Centenario.

His commitment to playing for Argentina was reflected in his decision to fly from Spain to Argentina for a low-key friendly against Honduras shortly before the tournament, where he suffered a back injury.

He then returned to Spain to give evidence at his trial for tax fraud before jetting off to the United States to join up with his Argentina team-mates.

Although he was injured for his team’s opening group game against Chile, he came on as a substitute in a 5-0 hammering of Panama to score a hat-trick in 19 minutes.

He then equalled Argentina’s international goalscoring record of 54, held by Gabriel Batistuta, in the quarter-finals before setting a new mark with his 55th international goal in the semi-final win over the United States.

Giving the coach’s interview was nerve wracking: Kumble

June 24, 2016 by Nasheman

anil_kumble

Kolkata: Former leg-spinner Anil Kumble, who was appointed the India cricket team’s head coach, said it was a nerve wracking experience giving the interview for the job before his former team-mates.

Kumble was interviewed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) cricket advisory committee comprising Sachin Tendulkar, V.V.S. Laxman and Sourav Ganguly at a five-star hotel here on Tuesday.

“Sachin was on teleconference, but of course there was Dada (Ganguly) and Laxman on the other side of the table, so it was nerve-racking but it was great to present a plan,” Kumble was quoted as saying by bcci.tv.

Speaking about his appointment, the 45-year-old, who retired from international cricket in 2008, said, “It will be wonderful to get into the Indian dressing room as the coach. I am really looking forward to the challenge and the huge responsibility. I know there will be a lot of expectations and that is something which I am looking forward to.”

Kumble also said that he will work behind the scenes, much like former India coaches John Wright and Gary Kirsten, who helped Indian cricket scale new heights.

“I played a lot under John Wright, he’s been a great influence on how I’ll go about the job, in terms of being in the background. When I became a mentor for Mumbai Indians, I brought John in because he understood a lot about Indian culture and then the way coaches work,” he said.

“I was involved with Gary Kirsten only for the Test matches, a very short period. He was, again, someone who worked in the background and didn’t make himself visible. Exactly how I’d like to work as well. Not in the front, but behind the scenes.”

The former tweaker, who once bowled with a broken jaw, also said he would try and build leaders from the present team and try to share the burden of the captain.

“Important as a coach to take some burden off the captain,” he said. “Captain has a lot of things on his head, all cricketing decisions and non-cricketing as well.

“Having been with the Indian team for such a long time and having had various experiences of not just conditions, but outside the cricket field, when you’re a coach, you’re not just coach on the field but also off it. You’re trying to build personalities, trying to build leaders. That’s how I’d like to look at this team,” he remarked.

Kumble also said that he has talked to Test captain Virat Kohli and will look to iron out their strategies just before the Test tour to the West Indies.

“We have the West Indies Test series coming up, so that’s something our focus will be on,” he said.

“I’ve spoken to Virat (Kohli) and MS (Dhoni), must be on the flight back from Zimbabwe. It’s nice to have a camp here in Bengaluru before we go into the tour. We’ll sit down and iron out and get ready for the West Indies tour.

“Bowling, getting 20 wickets in Test cricket will win you matches. That’s the focus and we’ll take it from there. Batting, we have some great talent there. I believe this team has the potential. It’s a young team and driven by young leaders,” he added.

“Looking forward to working with Virat and MS. Long-term, we have lots of Tests coming up in India, that’ll be our focus.”

The 45-year-old added that he will aim to be an enabler and not an imposer.

“They are already playing a good brand of cricket,” he said.

“I will bring my characteristics as well but won’t impose them on the players. My job is to convince players to buy into what I believe in and what they believe in. At the end of it, they need to own it. If the team doesn’t own what we agree on, then it’s not going to work. I’m only an enabler. I work as an enabler to make sure things happen,” Kumble added.

India’s maiden entry into Hockey Champions Trophy final

June 17, 2016 by Nasheman

Hockey Champions Trophy

London: India reached the final of the Hockey Champions Trophy for the first time after Britain and Belgium played a dramatic 3-3 draw to finish below the Asian Games champions at the completion of the round-robin stage here.

In the summit clash on Friday, India will meet world champions Australia, who defeated them 4-2 in their last league match of the six-nation tournament on Thursday.

India got seven points with two wins, two losses and a draw. Germany and Britain ended with six points each and will clash for the bronze medal. Belgium had five points while South Korea bagged three points. Australia totalled 13 points with four wins and a draw.

India had won only one medal in the 36 editions of the Champions Trophy – a bronze in 1982.

But they are set to better that record, thanks to Belgium and Britain, who played out a dramatic 3-3 draw in the final match of the pool phase, a result which helped neither team.

Belgium took less than 40 seconds to take the lead against the home favourites, with Thomas Briels guiding a cross into the roof of George Pinner’s net.

The home team captain Barry Middleton levelled with a penalty corner deflection five minutes before half time.

Belgium’s Loick Luypaert gave his side a 3-1 lead with a brace of penalty corner drag-flicks either side of the break, putting the Red Lions within one goal of sealing their own place in the competition final.

However, Britain’s decision to replace their goalkeeper with an outfield player with six minutes remaining proved significant, with David Ames and veteran Middleton tying the match as the Belgians lost their discipline.

In the Australia-India clash, much of the match was closely contested although it were the Australians who went into half time with a 2-0 lead thanks to strikes from Trent Mitton and the day’s captain, Aran Zalewski.

The Kookaburras added a third through Flynn Ogilvie before India captain V.R. Raghunath pulled a goal back with a trademark penalty corner.

Australia restored the two goal advantage seconds later when Tristan White continued his remarkable tournament by scoring his third goal in three games.

A Mandeep Singh strike early in the fourth quarter gave India genuine hope. And they could have rescued the game were it not for Australian shot-stopper Tyler Lovell who made numerous saves.

In the other match match, Constantin Staib and Oskar Deecke scored twice each as Olympic champions Germany produced superb play to overpower South Korea 7-0.

The result was the title holders Germany’s biggest ever victory at a Champions Trophy, surpassing their 6-1 win over Spain in Karachi way back in 1981.

Staib started and finished the scoring with field goals. Tom Grambusch, Deecke (2), Timm Herzbruch and Marco Miltkau all scored in between as Die Honamas produced their best performance of the competition.

Paes gets Olympic ticket, paired with Bopanna

June 11, 2016 by Nasheman

leander-paes-rohan-bopanna

New Delhi: Veteran Leander Paes today got the nod for his seventh Olympic appearance after the All India Tennis Association (AITA) paired him with Rohan Bopanna for the men’s doubles competition despite the latter’s desire to team up with Saketh Myneni.

Announcing the squad for the Olympics, beginning August 5, AITA chief Anil Khanna said Bopanna will be pairing up with Sania Mirza in the mixed doubles event as had been demanded by the World No.1 in women’s doubles.

Sania will be teaming up with Prarthana Thombare in the women’s doubles event. As was expected, the AITA rejected Bopanna’s request for Myneni as his partner, saying that India’s best chance for a medal at Rio lay in him teaming up with Paes, who won the French Open mixed doubles title earlier this month.

“He (Bopanna) has given reasons to selection committee on why he feels Saketh could be a better doubles partner. But he has also made it clear that he wants to represent the nation. It was a well-meaning letter (which Bopanna wrote yesterday to AITA). Leander and Rohan have played four times in Davis Cup, they have a 2-2 record,” Khanna said.

“Committee decided that the best bet for Indian tennis to win a medal at the Olympics would be Leander Paes and Rohan Bopanna,” he added.

Khanna then named Bopanna and Sania as the best medal hopes in the mixed doubles category.

“The committee has decided to nominate Rohan Bopanna and Sania Mirza in the mixed doubles competition,” he said.

Bengaluru braces for IPL title clash on Sunday

May 28, 2016 by Nasheman

IPL

Bengaluru: With hosts Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL-9) final on Sunday against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for the elusive title, Bengaluru is bracing for a high octane clash at the M. Chinnaswamy stadium in the city centre.

“The city has been put on a high alert for hosting the event (IPL final). Security measures are in place to ensure safety of players and fans at the stadium, which has been sanitised and fortified to prevent any incident,” city additional police commissioner K.S.R. Charan Reddy told IANS on Saturday.

A Bombay High Court order to shift IPL games, including the final out of drought-hit Maharashtra to save water has been a windfall for the frenzied fans, as its board (BCCI) awarded the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) to host the final.

The city had hosted the IPL-7 final on June 1, 2014 when Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) defeated Kings XI Punjab by three wickets to lift the title for the second time.

“Besides deploying about 1,000 police personnel in and around the venue, an anti-sabotage drill is being conducted to secure the stadium. A dog squad and a bomb squad have been pressed to sniff out any threat to the venue,” Reddy said.

Though RCB played twice in IPL finals and lost — first at Johannesburg in South Africa in 2009 against the defunct Deccan Chargers and second in Chennai against the suspended Chennai Super Kings in 2011, they are playing in an IPL final on home turf for the first time and hoping to be third time lucky in lifting the cup.

With tickets for the high-voltage match sold out online and offline by May 25, a day after the home team entered the final by beating Gujarat Lions in the first qualifier, KSCA is expecting about 40,000 fans to pack the floodlit stadium on a summer night for a cracker of a contest.

“As half the seats in stands are reserved for complimentary tickets and passes, the remaining (about 20,000) went on sale even a fortnight before RCB entered the final. With RCB in the final, there was a surge for tickets online since May 24 night and tickets across counters at the stadium were sold out in two hours due to heavy demand,” a KSCA official said.

Apart from franchisee of both teams and their sponsors, complimentary tickets are given to BCCI-IPL, various cricket associations, their members and former players, while passes are doled out to VIPs, including ministers, lawmakers, celebrities and officials of civic agencies involved in providing support facilities to the stadium.

Police have made elaborate arrangements to maintain peace and order during the summit clash, regulate vehicular movement and ban parking for one km around the stadium to prevent traffic snarls.

“Additional constables and home guards will be on duty from 5pm to midnight on all roads and signal junctions leading to the stadium for smooth traffic flow. Being a Sunday, we hope to minimise traffic jams if drivers maintain lane discipline,” a traffic inspector of Cubbon Park police station told IANS ahead of the match.

State-run city road transport and metro rail corporations will be plying additional bus and metro services from 5pm till 1am for the convenience of fans flocking to the stadium for an exciting match.

IPL: KKR eliminated, SRH to face Lions in second qualifier

May 26, 2016 by Nasheman

kkr

New Delhi: Two time champions Kolkata Knight Riders’ campaign in Indian Premier League 9 ended after going down to Sunrisers Hyderabad by 22 runs in the eliminator here on Wednesday.

Famed Hyderabad’s bowling line-up led by Bhuvneshwar Kumar with three wickets, proved too good for the KKR batsmen, who failed to put up a fight to finish at 140/8 in their 20 overs.

Chasing 163, KKR were off an identical start as Hyderabad losing in-form opener Robin Uthappa (11) cheaply before skipper Gautam Gambhir (28) and all-rounder Colin Munroe (16) took the team to 46/1 in the powerplay.

Gambhir and Munroe batted sensibly to put on 38 runs for the second wicket before the New Zealander perished to a silly run out off a sensational throw from Yuvraj Singh.

Playing at his home ground, Gambhir failed to read the bounce of the Kotla track as he miscued a short delivery from Ben Cutting.

With KKR needing 99 from the last 10 overs, the team landed in further trouble as incoming batsman Yusuf Pathan (2) fell to a beautiful running catch from Bhuvneshwar Kumar off Moises Henriques.

Next in Manish Pandey (36) and Suryakumar Yadav (23) batted sensibly to take the team past the 100-run mark by the 14th over.

Yadav, who survived a scare on 15, when pacer Mustafizur Rahman dropped him at the third man boundary, could add only eight runs before a brilliant running catch from Shikhar Dhawan off Henriques ended the 46-run fifth wicket stand.

Requiring 39 from the last three, Pandey, in his attempt to cope with the growing run-rate fell to a miscued shot off Bhuvneshwar after adding only 10 runs with Rajagopal Sathish (8).

With hopes of reaching the second qualifier fading, West Indian Jason Holder (6) joined Sathish but the duo could do little as Bhuvneshwar packed them off in the last over.

Tailenders Sunil Narine and Morne Morkel failed to trouble the scores as the side fell short by 22 runs to bow out of the cash-rich tournament.

For Hyderabad, Bhuvneshwar was the wrecker-in-chief with three wickets while Henriques took two. Cutting and Barinder Sran chipped in with a wicket each.

Earlier, KKR restricted Sunrisers to 162/8 after sending them to bat.

Kuldeep Yadav put up yet another impressive show with three wickets to break the backbone of the Sunrisers batting, who were off to a disappointing start.

Yuvraj (44) and Henriques (31) top-scored for Hyderabad after the side lost the key wicket of in-form opener Dhawan (10) cheaply.

After losing Dhawan, skipper David Warner (28), who was dropped by Pathan in the fifth over, resurrected the innings with incoming batsman Henriques to take the team to 43/1 in the powerplay.

Both the Australians pounced on the easy offerings from the KKR bowlers to raise a 59-run stand for the second wicket before Henriques was brilliantly caught and bowled by Yadav.

With Hyderabad struggling at 71/3 after 10 overs, incoming batsmen Yuvraj and Deepak Hooda (21) took the attack to the opposition with some glorious shots to take the team past the 100-run mark at the start of the 15th over.

The left-right combination went on milking runs at will before the Haryana batter threw away his wicket to a silly run-out ending the 49-run fourth wicket stand.

Coming in next, Aussie all-rounder Cutting failed to trouble the scorers as Yadav packed him with the first ball of his second spell to be beautifully stumped by Uthappa.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Naman Ojha (7) then joined Yuvraj in the middle and the duo added a quickfire 21 runs for the sixth wicket before the Punjab southpaw was clean bowled by Jason Holder.

All-rounder Bipul Sharma (14) hit a couple of lusty sixes off Morne Morkel in the final over to take Hyderabad to 162/8.

For KKR, Yadav was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets while Holder and Morkel chipped in with two wickets each.

The Sunrisers will now take on Gujarat Lions in the second qualifier on Friday for a place in Sunday’s final against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Brief Scores: Sunrisers Hyderabad 162/8 (Yuvraj Singh 44, Moises Henriques 31, David Warner 28, Kuldeep Yadav 3/35) vs Kolkata Knight Riders 140/8 (Manish Pandey 36, Gautam Gambhir 28, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 3/19, Moises Henriques 2/19)

IPL: Charged-up RCB face Lions in race to final

May 24, 2016 by Nasheman

rcb

Bengaluru: With the conclusion of the league phase, the stage is all set for the Indian Premier League (IPL) play-offs, as a rampaging Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) take on Gujarat Lions in the first qualifier here on Tuesday.

Having won four of their last league games on the trot, the Virat Kohli-led RCB finished on the second spot on the points table while Suresh Raina’s Gujarat Lions have had a successful debut campaign to atop the standings.

Going into Tuesday’s clash at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium here, both the sides will have an advantage. While the winning team will book a place in the final, the losing team will get to play in the second qualifier against the winner of the eliminator for a place in the title clash.

In the first qualifier, RCB will not only have the advantage of playing the high pressure game on their home ground but also can take solace from their all-round effort in the six-wicket win against Delhi Daredevils on Sunday.

The Bangalore franchise, runners-up in 2009 and 2011, will hope for a solid start from the in-form batting trio of skipper Kohli, West Indian Chris Gayle and South African veteran AB de Villiers.

With 919 runs so far in the tournament, Kohli, who has amassed four tons and five fifties, is a shy away from breaking another IPL record of becoming first to score 1,000 runs in an IPL edition.

Lokesh Rahul, Shane Watson and youngster Sachin Baby form a formidable middle order followed by the likes of all-rounder Stuart Binny.

The bowling department which was a weak link for the side in the earlier part of the league phase, has also come to the party towards the business end with the pace-spin duo of Watson and Yuzvendra Chahal among the top five wicket-takers.

With 19 wickets so far, leg-spinner Chahal is the purple cap holder while Australian veteran all-rounder Watson, with 16 wickets is fifth.

On the other hand, Raina has led debutants Gujarat from the front with back-to-back half centuries in the final two league matches to finish on top of the standings.

Apart from Raina, the batting will centre around West Indian Dwayne Smith, former New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum, Australian Aaron Finch and stumper Dinesh Karthik.

Gujarat also boasts of quality all-rounders in Dwayne Bravo and Ravindra Jadeja, who can add enough firepower in the lower order.

The bowling department has variety in its ranks with chinaman Shivil Kaushik being one of the finds of the tournament while veteran medium pacer Praveen Kumar has also been impressive with his new ball partner Dhawal Kulkarni.

Smith, with his gentle medium pace has been an effective weapon for Raina to contain the rival batters while the left-arm spin of Jadeja and Shadab Jakati will be good test for the RCB batters, who will relish playing at the home turf.

Team India for Zimbabwe and West Indies tours announced

May 23, 2016 by Nasheman

India-cricket

Mumbai: Rookie Mumbai pacer Shardul Thakur was the lone new face in India’s Test squad for the tour of West Indies, while a second-string team led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni was picked by the selectors for the limited-overs series in Zimbabwe, here on Monday.

The 24-year-old right-arm medium pacer was a surprise pick in the 17-member squad with the selectors reposing their faith in the line-up that had played the last Test series against South Africa at home.

Thakur was rewarded for his consistent performance in the domestic cricket where he took 41 wickets in 11 matches for Mumbai at an average of 24.51. His best figures in an innings were six for 107.

Varun Aaron, who was part of the team during the series against South Africa, was dropped with a fit-again Mohammed Shami returning to the squad which will have Ajinkya Rahane as its new vice-captain.

All-rounder Stuart Binny retained his place in the team announced by new BCCI Secretary Ajay Shirke following a meeting of the selection committee here.

The team, to be led by Virat Kohli, also had no place for veterans such as Gautam Gambhir, Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh despite their decent performances in the ongoing Indian Premier League. The tour of West Indies comprises four Tests in mid-July but the exact dates for the series are yet to be formalised.

“No one has been rested. No one wrote to BCCI or called us (to say) they were not available or they should be rested. It was the decision of the selection committee to pick a young side for Zimbabwe and another side for West Indies,” selection panel head Sandeep Patil told reporters.

Kohli has been rested from the limited-overs series against Zimbabwe, scheduled from June 11 to 20, along with Murali Vijay and Ashish Nehra, who is due to undergo a surgery.

The selectors have opted to pick a completely new-look team for the tour of Zimbabwe with Vidharbha left-handed opener Faiz Fazal, off-spinner Jayant Yadav, Punjab middle-order batsman Mandeep Singh and IPL star Yuzvendra Chahal being the uncapped players in the side.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni will captain the squad as he will be largely out of action due to India’s busy Test schedule this year.

Squad for Zimbabwe: M S Dhoni (c), K L Rahul, Maneesh Pandey, Karun Nair, Ambati Rayudu, Rishi Dhawan, Axar Patel, Jayant Yadav, Dhawal Kulkarni, Jaspreet Bumrah, Barinder Sran, Mandeep Singh, Jaidev Unadkat, Yuzvendra Chahal.

Squad for West Indies: Virat Kohli (c), Ajinkya Rahane (v-c), Murali Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, K L Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, Rohit Sharma, Wriddhimaan Saha, R Ashwin, Amit Mishra, Ravindra Jadeja, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shardul Thakur, Stuart Binny.

IPL: RCB beat Delhi by six wickets to qualify for play-offs

May 23, 2016 by Nasheman

virat-kohli

Raipur: Leading from the front, skipper Virat Kohli (54 not out) smashed yet another half-century to guide his Royal Challengers Bangalore to a comfortable six-wicket victory over Delhi Daredevils in their Indian Premier League clash on Sunday.

With the win, RCB climbed to second spot in points table with 16 points from 14 games and thus qualify for play-offs. They will now face Gujarat Lions in the first Qualifier 1 on May 24 in Bengaluru.

Batting first, riding on Quinton de Kock’s 52-ball 60, Delhi managed to post 138/8 in 20 overs but RCB easily chased down the target, posting 139/4 with 11 balls to spare.

Delhi’s IPL campaign ended here as they were knocked out of last four berth.

RCB got off to a poor start losing swashbuckling opener Chris Gayle (1) in the very first over itself.

Bangalore received yet another blow as Delhi skipper Zaheer Khan who returned for his second over dismissed the dangerous A.B. de Villiers (6) in the third over to have RCB on the back foot at 17/2.

But Bangalore skipper Kohli who has been in stupendous form this season played his natural game along with incoming batsman K.L. Rahul (38) and the right-handed duo added crucial 66-run partnership for the third wicket.

As Rahul was nearing yet another half-century, Carlos Brathwaite came in and dismissed the right-hander off his first ball to have RCB reduced to 83/3 in 11th over.

Despite wickets at the other end, Kohli played sensibly sneaking in with ones, twos and couple of boundaries to stay in course for the run chase.

Shane Watson (14) stay at the crease was also short-lived as he was dismissed in the 15th over to put Delhi back into the game.

But Kohli used his experience to best effect to guide his team over the line in style. He was well supported in the end by Stuart Binny (16 not out)

For Delhi, Zaheer, Morris, Brathwaite, and Pawan Negi claimed one wicket each.

Earlier put into bat, Delhi lost Rishabh Pant (1) in the second over with the score at 11.

Pant tried to punch on the up a delivery from pacer Sreenath Aravind, but the ball held its line and flicked the outside edge of his bat and be caught behind.

De Kock together with No.3 batsman Karun Nair then put up a brief partnership.

But Nair (11) was dismissed after getting a promising start, superbly caught by Kohli off leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal. Nair played a booming drive to a flighted delivery. But Kohli completed a catch after sprinting a fair distance to reduce Delhi to 42/2 in the sixth over.

Sanju Samson (17) was the next man in and he too promised a lot. Hitting a six and a four to get settled but he lost his wicket in the 10th over with his team at 71/3.

They were in more trouble when Sam Billings (4) went cheaply as Gayle took a sharp catch of the bowling of pacer Chris Jordan.

Losing wickets after building small partnerships was hurting Delhi’s cause though de Kock held firm. But at 81/4 in 11.2 overs, Delhi needed someone beside de Kock who brought up his fifty in the 14th over with a single.

That didn’t happen. Instead, Delhi slipped further losing Negi (6) and Brathwaite (1) in the 15th over by Chris Gayle.

To make matters worse, de Kock went back in the next over, bowled by Jordan after hitting five fours and a six during his 52-ball knock.

That deprived Delhi of a strong finish to their innings, though Morris provided some lusty blows.

Leg spinner Chahal claimed 3/32 off his four overs while Gayle chipped in with 2/11 in two overs.

Brief Scores: Delhi Daredevils 138/8 in 20 overs (Quinton de Kock 60; Yuzvendra Chahal 3-32, Chris Gayle 2-11) vs Royal Challengers Bangalore 139/4 in 18.1 overs (Virat Kohli 54 not out; Carlos Brathwaite 1-18)
