January 22, 2016 by Nasheman

jhulan_goswam

Sydney: India women’s cricket team Twenty20 practice match against the Governor-General’s XI was washed out due to heavy rain at the Drummoyne Oval here on Friday.

Following the wash out, which was the only practice game for the visitors, India and Australia will play three Twenty20s and three One-Day Internationals (ODI) each.

This was the inaugural Governor-General’s XI T20 match and was dedicated to Peter Cosgrove, who is the current Governor-General of Australia.

Less than four overs were bowled when a drizzle started. All-rounder Jess Jonassen led a 12-member Governor-General’s XI side.

Heavy rain forced the players off the field when Governor-General’s XI were batting at 19/1. Grace Harris was run out for seven.

India will kick off their campaign with a T20I match in Adelaide on January 26, followed by the second T20I on January 29 (Melbourne) and the third on January 31 (Sydney).

Mithali Raj will lead the team while fast bowler all-rounder Jhulan Goswami will be the vice-captain of the side.

The tour is considered important as post the limited-overs series, India will start their World T20 campaign against Bangladesh on March 15 in Bengaluru.

Canberra: India capitulated shamelessly losing the last 9 wickets for 46 runs to give Australia a 25-run victory in the fourth ODI, here today after outstanding centuries by Shikhar Dhawan (126) and Virat Kohli (106).

Chasing a substantial 349 for their first win in the series, the visitors were given a great start by Rohit Sharma, who hit a breezy 41 off 25 balls before Dhawan and Kohli set up a rollicking partnership of 212 runs for the second wicket off 177 balls to take the team to 277 without any further loss when Dhawan fell to mark a long procession of Indian batsman returning to the pavilion.

Kohli hit 106 off only 92 balls for his second successive century in the series before a soft dismissal and then Dhoni (0) lasted only three balls to dash India’s hopes with another frontline batsman Ajinkya Rahane injured although he did come into bat making only 2 runs.

India’s fourth successive defeat in the five-match series came a day after Team Director Ravi Shastri had said that “there is absolutely no shame in the way they have played despite recent results,” but after the match Dhoni took responsibility of the loss.

BCCI imposes life ban on Chandila; Hiken banned for 5 years

January 18, 2016 by Nasheman

Ajit Chandila

Mumbai: Haryana off-spinner Ajit Chandila was slapped with a life ban for his involvement in the 2013 IPL spot-fixing scandal, while Mumbai batsman Hiken Shah was handed a five-year suspension for making a corrupt approach to a fellow player as the BCCI disciplinary committee sealed their fate after a meeting here today.

However, the committee, headed by BCCI President Shashan Manohar and comprising Jyotiraditya Scindia and Niranjan Shah, deferred a decision on Chandila’s co-accused Pakistani umpire Asad Rauf till February 12, giving him a final deadline of February 9 to file his reply.

The 32-year-old Chandila, an off-spinner who was found guilty of spot-fixing during his stint with Rajasthan Royals, was handed a tougher punshiment for violating the codes pertaining to accepting bribes, fixing, underperfoming, trying to induce a fellow player and betting.

“He is held guilty of misconduct and corruption within the Articles 2.1.1; Article 2.1.2; Article 2.1.3; Article 2.1.4; Article 2.2.2; Article 2.2.3; Article 2.4.1 of the BCCI Anti Corruption Code.

Ajit Chandila is banned for Life from playing or representing cricket in any form or to be associated in any way with the activities of the Board or its Affiliates,” BCCI Secretary Anurag Thakur said in a statement.

“The endeavour of BCCI is to clean cricket and any kind of malpractices will be dealt with severely,” Thakur later said at a promotional event. Batsman Shah, on the other hand, was found guilty of making a corrupt approach to a fellow Mumbai player in the domestic circuit.

“He is held guilty of committing breach of Articles 2.1.1; Article 2.1.2 and Article 2.1.4 of the BCCI Anti Corruption Code. Hiken Shah is banned for five years from playing or representing cricket in any form or to be associated in any way with the activities of the Board or its Affiliates,” the BCCI Secretary said.

The hearing of Rauf was scheduled for today but he did not appear in person and sent a reply stating that “no fair enquiry has been conducted in his matter and hence a de novo enquiry be held by appointing another enquiry officer.” The request was rejected by the Disciplinary Committee.

“The Committee gave him a final opportunity to submit his written statement if any, and produce documents on which he proposes to rely on before February 9, 2016. The date of the hearing and the final order has been scheduled for February 12, 2016 at Cricket Centre, Mumbai,” the BCCI said.

Chandila and Shah had appeared in person before the Committee on December 24 last and were given time till January 4 to file a written response to the charges against them.

The panel met again on January 5 when Shah appeared in person, made an oral submission and a written reply to the findings of the enquiry against him.

Australia beat India in 2nd ODI

January 15, 2016 by Nasheman

Australia

Brisbane: Australia rode on a strong batting performance to thrash an insipid India by seven wickets in the second One-Day International (ODI) at the Gabba here on Friday.

This was Australia’s second consecutive win and the hosts have taken a 2-0 lead in the five-ODI series.

Chasing India’s total of 308/8, the hosts rode on excellent displays by George Bailey (76 not out), Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh (both 71) to overhaul the target with an over to spare.

The Indian bowlers made the task easier for the hosts with an indisciplined performance, conceding as many as 12 extra runs (11 wides and a no-ball).

Indian opener Rohit Sharma took the Man of the Match award thanks to his second consecutive century of the series which helped the visitors post a big total. The Mumbai right-hander scored 127 off 124 deliveries with 11 boundaries and three sixes.

Ajinkya Rahane (89) and Virat Kohli (59) also made merry on a pitch which did not offer much assistance for the bowlers.

But the good performance by the Indian batsmen was cancelled out by the bowling attack which lacked any kind of sting.

Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja (1/50), Ishant Sharma (1/60) and Umesh Yadav (1/74) picked up a wicket each, but the visitors seemed unable to prevent the Australians from scoring at a healthy rate.

Finch started off the Australian knock by hitting Sran for a couple of boundaries in the very first over. Ishant was no better at the other end, conceding back to back wides down the leg stump in his opening over.

Opening pacers Ishant Sharma and Barinder Sran were not able to make much of an impression on Australian openers Finch and Marsh, who played them quite comfortably.

The introduction of spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin also had no effect on the run rate as Finch and Marsh continued to score at a healthy rate. The visitors did themselves no favour by some shoddy fielding with Ajinkya Rahane and Sran dropping catches in the slips.

Finch and Marsh put together a 145-run stand for the opening wicket before Ajinkya Rahane pulled off a blinder at long-off off Jadeja’s bowling to send the former on his way.

Marsh also did not last long after that. He was felled when he was surprised by the extra bounce of an Ishant delivery that took the top edge and Kohli took an easy skier at short cover.

Steve Smith looked set for a well-deserved half-century before being undone by some poor shot selection. The right-hander probably misread an incoming delivery from Yadav and did not connect with an attempted cut as the ball nicked his off-stump.

That saw Glenn Maxwell (26 not out) join George Bailey in the middle and the duo pulled the hosts over the line.

Earlier, Rohit slammed his second consecutive ton to guide India to a challenging total. This was his 10th ODI century and the fourth in Australia against the hosts. The Mumbai batsman had scored an unbeaten 171 in the first ODI.

En route to his 124-run knock, Rohit entered his name in the record books by becoming the third batsman to score back-to-back tons against Australia in Australia after England’s Graeme Hick and India’s V.V.S. Laxman. It is also the top score by an Indian opener at the Gabba, going past Sachin Tendulkar’s 91 in March 2008.

James Faulkner (2/64), Joel Paris (1/40), John Hastings (1/46) and Scott Boland (1/64) were the pick of the bowlers for Australia.

Opting to bat first on a flat track where there was nothing much for the quicks, the visitors got off to a disappointing start as opener Shikhar Dhawan got himself out in a shameful fashion while trying to hit a delivery which was outside off stump, only to be caught by wicket-keeper Matthew Wade off the bowling of Joel Paris.

From there on, Kohli and Rohit took on the bowlers and posted a 125-run stand for the second wicket.

Both batsmen were looking good for yet another big score after striking half-centuries. But Kohli paid dearly for trying to sneak two runs in the last ball of the 24th over. A sharp throw rocketed back to Wade by Kane Richardson caught Kohli inches away from the crease to leave India at 134/2 in 23.5 overs.

Rahane then gave good company to Rohit as the duo notched up a 121-run partnership for the third wicket to help India cross the 250-run mark.

But Rohit’s innings came to an end in the 43rd over in an unlucky manner. Rahane drove a slower delivery back at bowler Faulkner who manage to get a bit of his hand on it, to deflect the ball onto the stumps.

Thereafter, Rahane, skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (11), Manish Pandey (6), Ravichandran Ashwin (1) and Ravindra Jadeja (5) all threw their wickets away while looking to step up the scoring rate.

Hashim Amla resigns as South Africa captain after second Test

January 7, 2016 by Nasheman

Amla batted for 11 hours and 47 minutes during his 201 in South Africa's first innings

Amla batted for 11 hours and 47 minutes during his 201 in South Africa’s first innings

by BBC

Hashim Amla resigned as South Africa captain immediately after his side drew the second Test against England.

The 32-year-old had been in poor form but made a double century to inspire his side’s fightback after England made 629-6 declared in Cape Town.

“I believe I can be of greater value as a fully focused batsman and senior player at this time,” said Amla.

AB de Villiers will lead South Africa in the third Test in Johannesburg, which starts on 14 January.

After his appointment as successor to Graeme Smith in June 2014, Amla captained the world number one side in 14 Tests.

He won four and drew six but came under pressure during a 3-0 series defeat in India.

Amla said he had considered quitting before the start of the series against England, who won the first Test by 241 runs in Durban last week.

Until his marathon effort at Newlands, Amla, a veteran of 90 Tests and 7,108 runs, had not hit a Test century since December 2014.

“I honestly feel a lot of the criticism that Hashim has faced in the last couple of weeks is very harsh,” said South Africa coach Russell Domingo.

“He is one of South Africa’s greatest players. There hasn’t been enough respect shown of his achievements as a player.”

De Villiers honoured to be captain

De Villiers had raised doubts about his future in Test cricket during the first Test because of his busy workload, and handed over wicketkeeping duties to Quinton de Kock for the second match.

The 31-year-old, who already leads the one-day side, said: “It is an incredible honour to captain South Africa in any format. The captaincy has obviously come at short notice and is the realisation of a lifelong dream.

“At the moment my priority and focus is placed on leading this team to what can be a memorable series win against England. This Test squad is motivated and determined to turn our performances around and I’m looking forward to taking up that challenge as captain.”

Cook pays tribute to ‘nice guy’ Amla

England captain Alastair Cook was sad to learn of Amla’s resignation.

“You’re under pressure as a captain for a lot of the time,” said Cook.

“It’s always sad when someone steps down because to captain your country is a huge honour and a real privilege.

“He’ll have his reasons and I wish him all the best – he’s a really nice guy.”

Cricket South Africa chief executive Haroon Lorgat said Amla “still had a huge role to play in shaping the success of our team”.

He added: “He is just that type of a person and we are very fortunate to have him in our stable.

“I want to thank AB for readily accepting the challenge of rebuilding our Test team as we seek to remain the best team in the world.”

Temba Bavuma hundred for South Africa transcended cricket

January 6, 2016 by Nasheman

Temba Bavuma

by Jonathan Agnew, BBC

Temba Bavuma’s magnificent unbeaten century for South Africa against England on day four in Cape Town transcended cricket.

I’ve been very lucky – I have followed South Africa and witnessed their first tour after they came back into world cricket in 1991 following the wilderness years of apartheid.

I watched their first Test match back – their first in the West Indies – which was very significant, but the hundred by 25-year-old Bavuma is absolutely up there.

Unfortunately it’s a reflection of the awful history of this country that you do have to categorise people by race.

They are trying very hard to overcome the legacy of those years so Bavuma, as the first black African to score a century for South Africa, is massively symbolic.

The South African authorities will be hoping his achievement resonates amongst an enormous number of people who might be inspired to take up cricket. It is very, very important.

Bavuma blunts England burst

In only his seventh Test match, Bavuma played superbly well and proved he is worthy as a Test batsman regardless of his skin colour.

He batted absolutely brilliantly and was a breath of fresh air. He attacked when England had taken three wickets in 20 minutes and had a real chance of putting South Africa under pressure.

England led by 180 and only needed four more wickets, but the way Bavuma counter-attacked was inspired.

They bowled too short at him – he is a very short man and is used to playing short-pitched bowling, so that was a mistake from England. His hooking and pulling was outstanding.Captain Hashim Amla batted for more than seven hours for his double century – it may have been rather eclipsed by Bavuma but it was a special innings.

He gave a number of chances – England let eight or nine of varying degrees of difficulty go in total as they showed the effects of more than 15 hours in the field – but what Amla did under the pressure he was under, both as a batsman and captain, was immense.

He’s a very calm, phlegmatic individual who will know if he wants to keep on with the captaincy, but that is not the burning issue any more. He is back in form.

It was a typical Amla innings, with lots of wristy flicks either side of the wicket, and for South Africa to turn the match on its head as they have done is remarkable.

Amla asks England questions

England had been in the field for 211 overs – the longest for them since 1987 – and all those catches had gone down. That’s what made Amla decide to put them in again before stumps rather than wait until the morning.

I think he made the right decision. The last thing England openers Alastair Cook and Alex Hales would have wanted was to bat again.

Amla could have waited to get ahead of England, but two runs behind is neither here nor there. Bavuma had got his hundred and the captain wanted to get six overs at them before the close.

South Africa were not able to knock one of the openers over as England got to stumps 18 runs ahead at 16-0, but at least they gave it a go.

Amla has an inexperienced bowling attack, with Chris Morris making his debut and going for 150 runs in the first innings and Kagiso Rabada playing only his fourth match.

You would fancy England to bat out the final day without much trouble but you just don’t know – and that’s the glorious uncertainty of the game.

Test cricket is alive and well

People write off Test cricket far too early these days – there seems to be an agenda out there saying it has a limited lifespan.

Whenever there is some hard work for the bowlers on unresponsive pitches, people start criticising but Test cricket will endure because it produces climaxes and opportunities for teams to turn a match on its head like they have done here.

This match is a brilliant example of why four-day Test cricket, as advocated by ECB chairman Colin Graves last year, would be a mistake.

Tests are five days for a reason – so you can put pressure on the team batting third.

It is not always going along at five runs an over with the ball disappearing into the stands – that’s not what Test cricket is. It’s a long, evolving game that needs time to develop and that’s what we’ve seen here.

Who on earth would have thought England would be batting to save the game having smashed 629-6 in their first innings? You couldn’t really make it up – but that’s Test cricket.

Kohli named BCCI Cricketer of the Year

December 31, 2015 by Nasheman

Virat Kohli

New Delhi: Continuing his meteoric rise, Indian Test captain Virat Kohli was today named ‘Cricketer of the Year’, while Mithali Raj was picked for the top women’s award in the BCCI annual honours to be given away on January 5 in Mumbai.

The 27-year-old batsman, who took over as captain in the middle of the tour of Australia after Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s sudden retirement, delivered some good results under his leadership.

Under Kohli, the Indian team ended a 22-year wait for a series win on Sri Lankan soil before battering world No.1 South Africa to give them their first overseas loss in nine years.

The right-hander has done well with the bat too, scoring 640 runs in 15 Test innings that he played at an average of 42.67. In his 20 ODI outings this year, Kohli managed 623 runs at an average of 36.65.

Mithali, on the other hand, became the first Indian woman and second overall to complete 5,000 runs in ODI format this year. Mithali will be presented with the M A Chidambaram Trophy for the best women’s cricketer.

In other awards, former wicketkeeper Syed Kirmani will be presented the Col. CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award.

Karnataka State Cricket Association has been chosen the state association of the year for achieving the treble of winning the Ranji Trophy, Irani Cup and Vijay Hazare Trophy in the season.

Karnataka all-rounder Robin Uthappa has been picked for the Madhavrao Scindia Award for being the highest run-scorer in Ranji Trophy. Uthappa scored 912 runs in 11 matches, averaging 50.66.

The top wicket-taker’s award is being shared this year by Karnataka’s R Vinay Kumar and Mumbai’s Shardul Thakur, both of whom scalped 48 in the previous season.

Mohammad Yousuf, Ramiz Raja in ugly fight over Mohammad Amir return

December 29, 2015 by Nasheman

ramiz-yousuf

Pakistan cricketers Muhammad Yousaf and Ramiz Raja had a blazing argument in a live show and discredited each other to a surprising extent disgraced cricketer over Mohammad Amir’s return.

Here is the what transpired between the two:

Raja: People with a beard should first of all stop lying.

Yousuf: A shameless person like you can only speak such things. You can only talk, because you have done nothing in cricket and you didn’t know how to play. You should bring him before me as I want to see how big a player he was. You just have two centuries from 57 Tests. With just two centuries under your belt, don’t you feel ashamed while speaking on cricket? You are nothing but an English teacher.

Raja: You don’t feel ashamed lying while keeping a beard?

Yousuf: I don’t know anything. I just know how to play cricket and I talk about it. Do you know how to play cricket?

Raja: Whatever you have played, you have just spoilt Pakistan cricket.

Yousuf: You are nothing but an English teacher.

Anchor (interrupts): I just wanted to know your views about the return of Mohammad Amir. Ramiz Bhai, how important would be it be for the team management to take Amir along with them?

Raja: See, first of all don’t bring such cunning people when I am around.

Yousuf: You are cunning as you filed a case against your own family for property and money. I haven’t seen a more shameless person than you in my life.

McCullum to bid adieu to international cricket in Feb

December 22, 2015 by Nasheman

brendon-mccullum

Christchurch: New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum today announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket after the home two-Test series against Australia in February.

The 34-year-old batsman will feature in his world-record 100th successive Test since debut at the Basin Reserve on February 12 and will quit after the second Test at Hagley Oval from February 20.

With McCullum retiring, 25-year old batsman Kane Williamson, who has become the top-ranked Test batsman, will captain the New Zealand team during the World Twenty20 in India to be held from March 8 to April 3.

McCullum said he wanted to make the announcement later but he was compelled to share it now as New Zealand will soon name its team for the World T20.

“Ideally, I would have preferred to wait until after the Test in Christchurch to make this news public. However, the schedule for naming the ICC World T20 squads means I couldn’t have managed this without causing a lot of confusion and speculation, something I was keen to avoid,” said McCullum, a day after his team won the Test series against Sri Lanka 2-0.

“I’ve loved my opportunity to play for and captain the Black Caps but all good things have to come to an end, and I’m just grateful for the wonderful experience of playing for my country,” added the swashbuckling batsman, who became the first New Zealander ever to reach the triple ton milestone against India in Wellington last year.

McCullum, who shares the world record of 100 Test sixes with Australian Adam Gilchrist and also holds the record for the most Twenty20 sixes, said he doesn’t want to dwell on his achievements now and wants to focus all his energy on the upcoming tournaments.

“There’s a time and place for reflection and that’s at the end of your career. For now, I’ll be giving all my attention to helping the team focus on what’s coming up over the next few weeks — and making sure we’re in the best possible shape for what’s going to be a very challenging summer,” he said.

McCullum, who made his international debut against Australia in 2002 and played his first Test against South Africa two years later, scored 6,273 runs, including 11 centuries, in his 99 Tests. He also played 254 ODIs, scoring 5,909 runs with five hundreds.
