Illegal mining: Lokayukta raids Janardhan Reddy’s home, office

December 29, 2015 by Nasheman

Janardhan Reddy

Bengaluru: Karnataka Lokayukta Police on Tuesday raided mining baron and former Bharatiya Janata Party minister Janardhan Reddy’s home and office.

The raids are conducted simultaneously in at least seven places in Bellary and Bengaluru.

A disproportionate assets case has been registered against Reddy.

Meanwhile, office of Obalapuram Mining Corporation is also being raided.

Janardhan Reddy has been under investigation by both Lokayukta and CBI over his mining deals and the illegal mining activity carried out when BJP was ruling Karnataka between 2008 and 2013.

Reddy spent over two years in jail and has been out on bail.

Bengaluru: Mining baron Janardhan Reddy arrested again

Bengaluru: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the anti-graft watchdog Lokayukta (ombudsman) on Friday arrested Karnataka mining baron and former BJP minister Gali Janardhan Reddy for his alleged involvement in the illegal export of iron ore from Belekeri port on the state’s west coast.

“Reddy was taken into custody under the Prevention of Corruption Act in the case of illegal export of iron ore that was also illegally mined in Bellary district between 2008-10,” an SIT official told reporters here.

Reddy, 48, has been on bail since January in other illegal mining cases the CBI filed against him in Hyderabad and Bengaluru since 2011. He was interrogated at the state secretariat’s annex building a day after his accomplice Madhu Kumar Verma was quizzed on Thursday.

The state government had directed the SIT to probe the illegal export of 50,000 tonnes of iron ore by mining firms under Reddy’s patronage and his aides, including two lawmakers, transporters and a few middlemen.

After interrogation by SIT sleuths, Reddy was taken to a state-run hospital at Yelahanka in the northern suburb under escort for medical check-up.

“We will produce him (Reddy) in a local court later for judicial remand and further interrogation as part of the investigation into the multi-crore scam,” the official said.

Reddy, a member of the state legislative council, secured bail from the Supreme Court on January 20 after languishing in Hyderabad and Bengaluru jails since his arrest on September 5, 2011, when the BJP was in power in this southern state.

SIT raids houses of Janardhan Reddy, 7 others in Bellary

Janardhan Reddy

Bellary: A Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Karnataka Lokayukta today raided the houses of former state Minister and mining baron G Janardhana Reddy and seven others, including two legislators, in connection with alleged export of iron ore illegally from Belikere port.

“The SIT officials of Karnataka Lokayukta raided the houses of Janardhan Reddy and seven others including two legislators at three different locations in Belikere,” a SIT official told PTI here.

The six-member team led by Shailendra Kumar also raided the houses of two MLAs – B Nagendra (independent) and Suresh Babu (BJP) – along with Swastik Nagaraj, a close aide of Reddy and others, the official said.

The raids were conducted at Kampli, Ballari and Hospete, the official said.

The team has seized documents pertaining to the illegal export of iron ore from Belikere port, the official said. “The team is scrutinising the documents,” he said.

The illegal export of iron ore from Belikeri port in Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district was exposed by former Lokayukta N Santosh Hegde, who in his report had said 7.74 million tonnes of iron ore were illegally exported between 2006-2007 and 2010-11, causing huge loss to the exchequer.
