Congress to hold 'Zameen Wapsi Andolan' against Land Ordinance today

February 25, 2015 by Nasheman

New Delhi: Demanding the withdrawal of the BJP government’s Land Ordinance which is being considered as anti-farmer, the Congress on Wednesday will hold a protest rally called ‘Zameen Wapsi Andolan’ at Jantar Mantar.

Top Congress brass, including president Sonia Gandhi’s political secretary Ahmed Patel, AICC general secretaries Digvijay Singh, Madhusoodhan Mistry, Ajay Maken, former Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh, Salman Khursheed, Jitender Singh, Raj Babbar, Deepinder Hooda, Sushmita Deb, will oppose the bill in public and hold a massive rally at around 12:00 noon.

“Congress is organising a mega rally, ‘Zameen Wapsi Andolan’, to oppose the BJP government’s draconian ordinance that intends to change the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act 2013 passed by the Congress government,” the party said in a release.

The party has also attempted for convergence of farmers from across the country to raise their voice in opposition to the ordinance.

“Senior leaders of Congress will be present to challenge this Ordinance. They will stand up for the 2013 law which was enacted by the UPA government to deliver equitable justice to the poor farmer and to empower the common man,” the AICC said.

Declaring that its opposition to the Land Acquisition Ordinance was non-negotiable, Congress attacked the BJP- led government for introducing the Bill in Lok Sabha on Tuesday to replace the ordinance despite three Union Ministers giving assurances suggesting that all stakeholders would be taken on board.

Party chief Sonia Gandhi at a strategy meeting in Parliament House in the morning yesterday had set the tone for the party’s tough stand on the land ordinance.

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today joined Anna Hazare on his second day of protest against the contentious land ordinance and shared the dais with the social activist.

Kejriwal was among a host of leaders cutting across party lines who joined the agitation on a day the government introduced the contentious land acquisition bill in Lok Sabha amid a walk out by the opposition.

Though Hazare had earlier ruled out sharing stage with any politician, political leaders including CPI’s Atul Anjan and Vaiko of MDMK were among those sitting on the dais.

Before beginning his protest today, Hazare said people from political parties were welcome to join the agitators but will not share the stage with him and made it clear that he would not allow any political colour to the agitation.

He accused the NDA government of not heeding to farmers’ interests.

Yesterday, Hazare had said a jail-bharo movement will be launched from the Ramlila Ground after carrying out “padyatra” across the country for three-four months.

Accusing the government of only caring for corporates, Hazare said he will not relent till government withdraws the controversial ordinance.

“The political parties are of the country only. And, people running the government are also from the country. The people who suffer injustice are also from this country. And, so if farmers are meted out injustice and if everyone comes together to fight injustice, then what is the problem,” Hazare told reporters.

Anna Hazare to protest in Jantar Mantar against land ordinance

February 16, 2015 by Nasheman

New Delhi: Social activist Anna Hazare will hold a two-day protest at Jantar Mantar in February against the recent amendments in the Land Acquisition Act by the Centre.

The agitation will be supported by several farmers’ organisations and many other social activists including Medha Patkar will participate in it.

“The two-day protest starting February 23 will focus on the recent anti-farmers amendments in the Land Acquisition Act made by the Narendra Modi government. Farmer organisations across the country will participate in the agitation. Medha Patkar is also expected to join the agitation,” Hazare’s office said.

Hazare will reach the national capital on the morning of February 23. Prior to this, he will go to Palwal in Haryana and participate in a farmers’ agitation there.

This will be Hazare’s first visit to the national capital after the landslide victory of his one time aide and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal.

Incidentally, the AAP too have voiced his opposition to the amendments made in the Land Acquisition Act.

“We will support Annaji’s ‘sangharsh’. We respect him. Whatever order he gives, I will follow it. We support his stand and his order is an instruction for us. His struggle is, however, away from political parties. Still, I will ask time from him and if he gives me time then I will certainly meet him. I request everyone to support him in his crusade,” senior AAP leader Kumar Vishwas said.

On December 29 last year, the government had recommended promulgation of an ordinance making significant changes in the Land Acquisition Act including removal of consent clause for acquiring land for five areas of industrial corridors, PPP projects, rural infrastructure, affordable housing and defence.

Bhopal gas disaster survivors to sit on an indefinite water-less fast in Delhi on the issue of compensation

November 4, 2014 by Nasheman

Bhopal gas disaster survivors

New Delhi: This December will mark the 30th anniversary of the Bhopal gas disaster. On 10th November survivors of the disaster will be coming down to Delhi and 5 of them will sit on an indefinite water-less fast at Jantar Mantar on the issue of compensation. They are demanding additional compensation for all survivors of the disaster and correction of figures of death and extent of injury in the curative petition filed in the Supreme Court. More than half a million gas victims have been denied compensation on an arbitary decision taken by Group of Minister on Bhopal in 2010. According to activists and various committees working for the welfare of the survivors, there is no scientific and legal basis to deny additional compensation to 93% of the victims.

The survivors say that they expect Prime Minister Narendra Modi to show the same keenness in getting adequate compensation to them, as keen he is to welcome American corporations to the country. They say that Bhopal is a good test for him.

For those who will be fasting that day, it will not be an easy task.

“We don’t think it is possible to continue the fast for more than 5 days without doing some serious damage to the fasters health and we are hoping the drastic nature of this action will pressure the PM to do something on this issue.”
