Bhatkal not terrorists’ haven: Home Minister

February 2, 2015 by Nasheman

Bhatkal

Udupi: Refuting claims that Bhatkal is turning into a terrorists’ hub, Karnataka Home Minister K J George said that even though four men who were arrested in Bhatkal for allegedly having links with terror group, the place is safe to live.

“People in Bhatkal are peace loving and lead a harmonious life. Tagging them as terrorist is not a right thing as they work towards the development of the town. The coastal town should not be labeled as a terror hub for the mistakes of few,” said George to the presspersons while attending a church programme in Shirva on Saturday.

Speaking further he said that terrorism does not have its existence only in Karnataka but has its routes across India.

“The State and Central government should work hand-in-hand to come up with strategies to curb the problem. State government will not spare terrorists. People representatives should act responsible, instead of issuing irresponsible remarks over the terror problem,” he added.

Appreciating the duties of Police department, the Home Minister said that the department has acted swiftly by arresting the alleged four terrorists from Bhatkal.

Karnataka: Excise Minister Jarkiholi resigns

January 28, 2015 by Nasheman

Satish L Jarkiholi

Bengaluru: In a surprise move, Excise Minister and CM Siddaramaiah’s close confidante Satish L Jarkiholi resigned from the cabinet on Tuesday, January 27 citing that he required time to devote to social service.

However, according to sources, Jarkiholi was never happy with the Excise portfolio and instead he wanted to be in charge of the ministry of either Sports and Youth Affairs or Social Welfare.

Jarkiholi faxed his resignation letter to Siddaramaiah as the latter was in Tirupathi. He hails from the Valmiki community and sources close to Jarkiholi said he was upset with the CM for not recognizing his work for the community and uniting the SC/STs in the state, which have moved away from the Congress.

It may be recalled that Jarkiholi had resigned from the ministry and walked away with Siddaramaiah when the latter quit JD(S) in 2006. For his loyalty, Siddaramaiah after becoming CM in 2013, gave him the Excise portfolio along with making him the District In-Charge Minister of Belagavi.

Presently, Sports and Youth Services portfolio is held by Minister Abhay Chandra Jain and Jarkiholi’s alleged desire to secure Social Welfare portfolio may not be fulfilled as incumbent Minister H Anjaneya, is credited with doing justice to his position.

Bengaluru: Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala Monday lauded the Congress-led state government for launching many welfare schemes and public services like Mobile One project across the state on the occasion of 66th Republic Day.

In a brief address on this special occasion, Governor Vala hoisted the national flag and said that the state government has made remarkable progress in many fields, especially in public services, welfare and development schemes.

“The Mobile One project, launched to provide a number of services to the public, has accomplished a rare feat. Similarly, health scheme brought down infant mortality and the ‘Ksheera Baghya’ scheme, in which free milk is distributed among schoolchildren thrice a week, has reduced malnutrition among them,” he said.

The governor also commended the state government for implementing drinking water projects in drought-prone villages during this fiscal (2014-15).

“We have to strive hard to take our nation forward on the development path and to make the mantra — ‘Progress of Karnataka is for the country’s progress’ meaningful,” Vala said, urging the public to take a pledge for ensuring Swachh Bharat (clean India) through Swachh Karnataka (clean Karnataka).

Alluding to Swami Vivekananda’s words – You can give bread to a man and feed for a day but it is better to teach him to earn bread – Governor Vala exhorted the people to imbibe Vivekananda’s ideologoy.

Noting that Karnataka holds special significance in the country due to the strides it has made in the fields like software, biotech, aeronautics, defence, research, space and innovation, the governor said though people’s languages and attires vary from state to state, India has one identity.

“With this feeling (of oneness), we should rise above differences of religion, caste, colour and communities and march ahead on building the nation strong,” he noted.

Earlier, pomp and pageantry marked the Republic Day celebrations where the governor took salute during the parade amid tight security.

An air force helicopter showered rose petals at the podium, where Governor Vala, Chief Minister Siddarmaiah and other dignitaries were seated.

About 8,000 people, including children, who congregated on this occasion, cheered the services personnel and other participants during the march past and show of strength.

About 2,500 police personnel had been deployed for a fool-proof security.

Police across the city were also on high alert as part of the security drill with reinforcements at vital installations and in sensitive (VIP) areas.

About 40 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras were installed in and around the venue to monitor movement of people, participants and dignitaries.

Bengaluru: Local Janata Dal (Secular) MLA Zameer Ahmed met city police commissioner M N Reddi today, alleging that a “lot of innocent individuals have been picked up,” by police in connection to the mob violence that followed the alleged sexual harassment of a 8 year old in a school here on Wednesday January 7.

Angry residents had clashed with the police, set vehicles on fire and pelted stones after an eight-year-old girl complained of sexual harassment by a physical education teacher in a school in Bengaluru.

Speaking to Nasheman, Mr. Ahmed said that more than 18 individuals have been arrested. “Many of them, I am told are innocent, and have no connection to the violence.” He urged the police to investigate the matter with impartiality, and release all innocent individuals.

Karnataka governor vows to achieve saffronization; exhorts college girls to follow Israel

January 8, 2015 by Nasheman

Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala

Mangaluru: The governor of Karnataka has an extreme likeness to the colour of his preference. Addressing a gathering at the inaugural ceremony of golden jubilee of Vivekananda Degree College and Vivekananda Pre-University College at Puttur, near here, Governor Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala pledged to achieve ‘saffronization’ in the state. He said that ‘saffronization’ is nothing but way of Indian life.

Vala, who has his roots in the RSS, was handpicked by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to be governor of Congress-governed Karnataka, a state where Amit Shah led Bharatiya Janata Party intends to strengthen itself in the coming days.

Slamming the people who criticize ‘saffronization’, the governor said: “We proudly speak about saffronisation, will continue to do so, and achieve saffronisation as well.”

Vala said that convent education can introduce students only to the letters, science and technology, but it can’t impart culture – something that ancient Indian texts do.

The governor said that ancient scriptures have shown a way of life. If it was sought to be replicated now what was wrong in doing so, he asked.

The governor also asked girl students of the college to realize their self-belief and courage.

Praising Israeli girls for fighting against Palestinians, Vala lamented that Indian girls don’t do so. Great men in Indian history, from Shivaji to Gandhi, are remembered because of their mothers, he said.

Invoking Swami Vivekananda, Vala said his exhortation “Arise, awake and stop not till the goal is reached” was drawn from the Upanishads. “Swami Vivekananda, Dayananda Saraswati and other leaders held the saffron flag aloft and espoused Indianness,” he stated.

January 7, 2015 by Nasheman

Bengaluru: Angry parents clashed with the police, set vehicles on fire and pelted stones after an eight-year-old girl complained of sexual harassment by a physical education teacher in a school in Bengaluru. The accused Krishna has been taken into custody.

TV reports said she was allegedly also told to remove her hijab.

Angry parents and local residents in Bangalore burned school property and vehicles today and thrashed a teacher who was accused of molesting an 8-year-old.

The man, a physical education instructor at the private school located in West Bangalore, has been taken into police custody.

According to eyewitnesses, angry protestors set vehicles on fire when the police resisted and ransacked the school.

The situation is now under control and the area has been cordoned off, the report stated. Media channels quoted Police Commissioner M N Reddi, who rushed to the spot, as saying that “there should be no instant justice”, and that the “courts would decide on the punishment for the accused”.

“We have taken the accused into custody. We will take stringent action in the incident,” the Police Commissioner said. Reddi said “if anything unlawful takes place across the city, action will be taken.”

This is the second time this week that these areas have witnessed mass street violence.

A tense situation also prevailed during the Eid Milad celebrations over animal carcasses that were found near a place of worship. It wasn’t long before Wednesday’s episode — which started as a protest by the parents of the minor — degenerated into a riot with communal overtones.

The issue began to take on a communal colour because the alleged perpetrator and the victim are from different religious communities.

Modi government slashes Centre's allocation to Karnataka under MGNREGA

December 27, 2014 by Nasheman

MGNREGA

Bengaluru: Karnataka Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister H K Patil today slammed the Narendra Modi-government for “slashing the state’s allocation under the MGNREGA”, saying it would hit developmental work and poor people.

“The slashing of state’s allocation under MNREGA will hit not only the developmental work in rural areas but also poor villagers,” he said after a meeting of Chief Executive officers of Zilla Panchayats here.

Patil flayed the central government for meting out “step-motherly” treatment to the state.
He said the Centre released full amount of Rs 4,210 crore at one go under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act to Andhra Pradesh but slashed Karnataka’s allocation by Rs 1,200 crore.

Patil said he would be meeting Union Rural Development Minister Chaudhary Birender Singh between January 3 and 4 in New Delhi and request him to increase the allocations for the state under the scheme.

He also said he would attend the RDPR Ministers’ national conclave in Thiruvananthpuram on January 6 where he would once again press for increase in MNREGA allocations for the state.

Patil said “in a federal set up the government at the Centre cannot discriminate between the states or slash the release of funds to the state governments.”

The Minister said the RDPR department has constructed 5.10 lakh toilets as against the target of six lakh set for this year.

“I am confident we shall achieve the target by March end of the financial year,” he said. For next year, the department has set a target of constructing 10 lakh toilets, Patil added.

By 2018, the government is determined to build toilets in all the houses in the state. “By 2018 state will be freed of open defecation menace,” he said.

Patil said there is no proposal before government to postpone the panchayat elections to be held in May.

“Elections to GPs will be held as per schedule – there’s lot of time left to prepare. Six months are left,” he said.

BJP opposes Karnataka government’s move on Tipu Sultan birth anniversary

December 26, 2014 by Nasheman

Tipu Sultan

Bengaluru: The Congress government’s move to celebrate the birth anniversary of the 18th century legendary king Tipu Sultan has stirred a controversy in Karnataka, with BJP alleging that it was an attempt by the ruling party to strengthen its vote bank.

On December 22, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced that the government has decided to celebrate “Tipu Jayanti” and the date would be decided shortly.

“There has been a lot of pressure from various quarters to celebrate Tipu Jayanti. We have decided to take this into consideration and will announce the date shortly,” Siddaramaiah had said at the release of a book “Tipu Sultan: A Crusader for Change” by historian Prof B Sheik Ali.

But this has not gone down well with the BJP, with its senior leaders claiming that Tipu was a “tyrant” who committed forced conversions in Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada districts in Karnataka and the neighbouring Kerala.

BJP leader Suresh Kumar said Tipu cannot be considered as a person whose birthday should be celebrated by the government, claiming that the erstwhile Mysuru ruler had committed barbaric acts against people including Kodavas (in Kodagu district).

“We (BJP) have our own viewpoint on Tipu Sultan about his administration, especially when you go to Coorg (Kodagu) and other places where people still remember the barbaric acts committed against Coorgis, who refused to oblige his dictates. So, Tipu cannot be considered as a person whose birthday should be celebrated by the state government,” he claimed.

Tipu was a ruler of the erstwhile kingdom of Mysore, who was considered an implacable enemy of the British East India Company. He was killed in May 1799 while defending his fort of Srirangapatna against the British forces.

When pointed out that Congress considers Tipu as secular, Kumar said that party had its own definition of secularism which is not acceptable worldover.

“Yes, Tipu Sultan was and has been as secular as the Congress leaders are because in the Congress dictionary and their viewpoint they have got their own definition of the word secular which is not acceptable the world over,” he said.

“Congress has felt that by projecting Tipu Sultan, their credentials among their votebank will get strengthened. Having tasted defeats after defeats since parliamentary elections, it is resorting to the same step. I wish Congress good,” he said.

State Legislative Council Chairman and senior state BJP leader D H Shankarmurthy told PTI that the government has all the rights to celebrate Tipu’s birthday, but the Mysuru ruler was “anti-Kannada.”

“Before Tipu ruled Mysuru, Kannada was the official language. He replaced Kannada with Persian, which was an alien language,” he said.

Moreover, Tipu was not a Kannadiga and he forced conversions in Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada and Kerala, he claimed.

Countering Siddaramaiah’s remarks that Tipu supported temples and gave money to construct them, Shankamurthy said no one can also ignore his acts of demolishing temples.

“There may be few instances of Tipu supporting construction of temples by giving money, but it is also true he demolished many temples. A debate has to be there as to why Tipu supported some and demolished other temples,” he argued.

Siddaramaiah had said Tipu had supported temples and gave money to construct them and waged a war against British and died on the battlefield for the cause of Indian freedom.

The Congress government has been making attempts to honour Tipu but without much success, the earlier case being an attempt to launch a central university proposed at his erstwhile capital Srirangapatna, also a major Hindu pilgrimage destination, during the UPA rule, which was opposed by the then BJP government in the state.

Karnataka to develop infrastructure to boost tourism

December 25, 2014 by Nasheman

Karnataka tourism

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government is setting up a special purpose vehicle (SPV) to develop infrastructure at tourist destinations across the state under the public-private partnership (PPP), a senior official said Wednesday.

“The state cabinet Tuesday approved the proposal of the tourism department to set up the SPV for tourism infrastructure development at an estimated cost of Rs.14,737 crore. We have identified 1,468 acres of land at tourist spots across the state for the projects under PPP,” the official told IANS here.

Under the SPV, private firms selected through a bidding process will be given specified acres of land on lease to develop the infrastructure facilities and operate them around the tourist spots for attracting more tourists.

“As we want to make Karnataka a preferred destination in the country for domestic and overseas tourists, we have identified 325 tourist spots across the state for developing the infrastructure through the PPP mode,” the official said.

According to a report prepared by the tourist department, the state has potential to attract a whopping Rs.73,000 crore worth investments in tourist infrastructure development over the next 10 years, generating an additional revenue of Rs.83,000 crore and employment to 43 lakh people by 2024.

“Besides developing infrastructure and connectivity, we need to build human capital with skilled manpower for catering to the growing number of tourists to the state from across the country and abroad,” the official pointed out.

The Karnataka tourism vision group, under the chairmanship of former Infosys board member and Manipal Global Education chairman T.V. Mohandas Pai, has recommended a holistic approach in promoting the rich and diverse tourist spots in the state spawning heritage sites, monuments, ancient and modern temples, pilgrim towns, wildlife sanctuaries, hill stations, beaches and historic cities like Mysuru and Hampi.
