Kerala Governor misses flight as pilot refuses to wait

December 23, 2015 by Nasheman

P Sathasivam

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Governor Justice P Sathasivam failed to board an Air India flight from Kochi to the state capital after the pilot reportedly refused to wait for the dignitary and took off.

Raj Bhavan sources said the Governor reached Nedumbassery International airport about 10 minutes before the flight was to depart at 11:40 PM yesterday, but the “step ladder had been removed and the flight was pushing back”.

According to the sources, the Governor was returning to the state capital after attending a function in Kozhikode. They were informed by Air India officials that the Delhi-Kochi -Thiruvanthapuram A1048 flight will take off at 1140 PM.

The delayed flight had yesterday reached Kochi airport at 10.58 PM and was to leave by 1140 PM.

“We got a communication from the airport that the flight will take off at 11.40 PM. However, when the Governor, accompanied by his wife reached the airport at 11.28 PM to board the flight, we saw the step ladder had been removed and the flight was pushing back,” the sources told PTI.

AI officials were waiting at the ladder point with the Governor’s boarding pass. The sources said though the Air India manager had informed the pilot that the Governor was arriving, he refused to wait for him and closed the door.

When contacted, the airport sources said the Governor had reached the tarmac when the flight was at the “push back stage and the doors were closed”.

Raj Bhavan sources said they would be taking up the matter with appropriate authorities even as Air India sources said they were looking into the matter.

After an overnight stay at Kochi, the Governor reached the state capital by road this morning. Two years ago, the then Governor Nikhil Kumar had also faced a similar situation.

Karnataka outplay Kerala by 9 wickets in Vijay Hazare

December 17, 2015 by Nasheman

Vijay Hazare

Bengaluru: Karnataka leg-spinner Shreyas Gopal bagged a five-wicket haul to help the defending champions pack Kerala for 49 runs and register a nine-wicket win in their Group B Vijay Hazare cricket match, here today.

Electing to bat at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, the Kerala batting line-up fell like a pack of cards in 22 overs against a disciplined Karnataka bowling attack.

Pace spearhead and captain R Vinay Kumar started the opposition fall by bagging a couple of wickets as left-arm bowler Sreenath Aravind also picked two scalps.

But Gopal soon took over to rattle the middle and the lower-order in no time.

Opener Nikhilesh Surendran (11) and skipper Sachin Baby (12) were the only two batsmen to get into double figures as the innings saw four ducks in all.

Coming into bat, Karnataka top-order wasted little time in chasing down the score in 5.5 overs. Mayank Agarwal (5) was out early, but Lokesh Rahul (19) and Karun Nair (24) made sure that there were no hiccups in the remaining chase.

Karnataka have registered three wins in five matches.

Brief Scores:

Kerala 49 all out in 22 overs (Nikhilesh Surendran 11, Sachin Baby 12; Chreyas Goapl 5-19)

Karnataka 51/1 in 5.5 overs (Lokesh Rahul 19 not out, Karun Nair 24 not out; Unnikrishnan Manukrishnan 1-27).

November 26, 2015 by Nasheman

arathi-adithya-vishnu

Kochi: Kerala’s richest NRI Ravi Pillai is reportedly spending Rs 55 crore for his daughter Arathi Pillai’s high-profile wedding with Kochi-based Adithya Vishnu in Kollam, Kerala today.

Pillai is the chairman of the Bahrain-headquartered RP Group with a net worth of Rs 19, 300 crore.

The wedding set, spread over eight acres, has cost more than Rs 23 crore. It has been designed by art director Sabu Cyril of “Baahubali” fame, reports Manoramaonline.

“The design is unique for this event. But it’s largely modelled on the royal palaces of Rajasthan,” said Sabu Cyril. It took him 75 days to create the wedding set.

Manju Warrier, Sobhana and Stephen Devassy will be performing before 30,000 guests inside a 350,000 sq ft set .

The guest list includes royal families of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and UAE, CEOs of Japan Gas Corporation and Chiyoda Corporation Japan, Samsung Group.

Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Union ministers and film stars including Mammootty and Mohanlal will be attending the function.

Talking about the multi-crore ceremony, Ravi Pillai stated that his daughter’s wedding is not an extravaganza. “Besides conducting my daughter’s marriage in a good manner, I am also spending around Rs 10 crore for humanitarian initiatives. As part of it, as many as 2,000 cancer patients in the state will be given Rs 10,000 each as medical aid,” said Pillai.

Kerala Poll Results: Left on winning track, UDF trails

Thiruvananthapuram: The Left was on course on Saturday for a much-needed electoral victory in the Kerala civic polls, dethroning the Congress-led UDF, available results showed. The BJP did better than last time.

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) was leading in 507 gram panchayats at 1 p.m. The United Democratic Front was ahead in 379 while the BJP was leading in 16 and others in 15. The state has 941 gram panchayats.

At the block level, the LDF was leading in 92 and the UDF in 59 while at the district panchayat level, the rival fronts lead in seven each.

In the trends available for the municipalities, the LDF was leading in 44 and the UDF in 31 and the BJP in just one.

In the six corporations, the LDF won two, the UDF in one, while in three corporations it was a hung house.

Overall in the 2010 polls, the UDF won 65 percent of the total seats.
It is a strong come back for the Left which has not been able to secure a total win in any polls since they won the 2006 assembly polls.

In the 2010 civic polls while the Left won in the corporation (by winning three out of the five corporations), in the other segments – municipalities, district panchayats, block panchayats and gram panchayats, it was the Congress-led UDF that was far ahead of the Left.

The 2015 polls were held for 21,871 seats in 941 village, 152 blocks and 14 district panchayats besides 86 municipalities and six corporations.

As the results began to come in thick and fast, the Left opposition has been able to clearly edge out the ruling Congress led United Democratic Front (UDF) in all the segments of the three-tier local body structure in the state.

The BJP had reason to cheer as it came second in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, pushing the Congress to third position after they won 34 seats, while the Congress could manage only 21 and the Left secured 42.

The BJP, which secured around 500 seats in the 2010 polls, has so far been able to muster about 1,100 seats.

Kerala students condemn Dadri incident; Hold beef fests in campus

October 7, 2015 by Nasheman

kerala-students-beef-protest

New Delhi: Students in Kerala have come up with an innovative idea to protest lynching of Akhlaq over rumors that he had consumed beef. The students staged a stir by holding beef festivals in college campuses in the state.

The event saw students sharing a hearty meal of beef curry and bread. Invitations were also extended to those present in and around the campus.

The first such event was initiated by the CPI-M’s student wing SFI and was held at Sree Kerala Varma College in Thrissur on Oct 1. However, the event later ran into trouble after the ABVP activists reached the scene.

Six students were suspended by the college management as the institution has a long-standing rule against non-veg food inside the campus – the college is managed by the Cochin Devaswom Board.

But, not to be disheartened by the turn of events the cause was taken up by students of Ernakulam’s Maharaja’s College and this time it was Congress’ student wing KSU that took the lead.

The event witnessed happy faces eating beef as a mark of protest. A bunch of girls was even seen clicking selfies with plates of beef curry in their hand.

KSU leader Mohammed Rafi said, “KSU has conducted a beef festival…it is to protest against growing fascist elements in our country.”

Referring to the killing of Akhlaq, he added that fascist elements are active not just in northern parts of the country but also in Kerala.

He also slammed the management of Thrissur’s Sree Kerala Varma College for suspending students who held a ‘secular’ beef festival.

Kerala-based Muslim outfit launches campaign against IS, Al-Qaeda

September 9, 2015 by Nasheman

Kerala campaign against IS Al-Qaeda

Thiruvananthapuram: A Kerala-based Muslim outfit has launched an intensive campaign to wean away its youth from the influence of terror groups like Islamic State and Al Qaeda.

The campaign assumes significance in the wake of deportation of two Kerala youths by UAE for allegedly supporting IS ideology in the social media, after which state police had initiated a probe.

Kerala Nadvathul Muhjahideen, a progressive movement in the community, has embarked on an ambitious anti-terror and communal drive through meetings and awareness programmes.

“Our campaign is against the fundamental, communal and terror ideologies spreading among youths,” KDM Youth wing State President Abdul Majeed Swalahi said.

“We are getting good response for the campaign which began seven months ago,” he said.

Swalahi said pamphlets containing messages to counter the hate mongering of outfits like IS are also being used during the campaign.

He said the terrorist groups whether it be IS, al Qaeda or Boko Haram were using the name of Prophet Muhammed and distorting the glorified history of Islam.

“The focus of the campaign is based on the humanism in the teachings of Prophet Muhammed”, he added.

Majeed said youths were unknowingly falling prey to various propaganda of these terror outfits and ‘some of them get into trouble by reacting in the social media’.

Hence ‘we are creating an awareness among youths how vigilant they should be while sharing messages in the social media, especially in Facebook’, he said.

Swalahi alleged that both majority and minority fundamentalist groups were trying to indulge in communal polarisation through the social media.

CBSE’s new dress code: Kerala nun denied from giving AIPMT with veil, cross

July 25, 2015 by Nasheman

AIPMT

Thiruvananthapuram: A Keralite nun was today denied permission to take the the All India Pre Medical Entrance Test (AIPMT) here after she refused to remove her veil and Holy cross as required under the CBSE’s new dress code.

Sister Saiba, who was to take the test at the Jawahar central school here this morning, said she sought permission to write the examination with her veil and cross.

However, the school Principal told her about the guidelines issued by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
She then requested for a separate room to write the examination without the veil and cross, but it was not accepted by the school authorities, she told mediapersons.

“I requested that I may be given a separate room where I will remove the veil and cross and write the test, but that was not allowed,” she said.

The Principal told her that she was also a Christian and understood her plight, but as per CBSE guidelines, veil and Holy cross cannot be permitted inside the examination hall.

Many students were seen removing head scarfs, ear ringsand all other articles banned before entering the hall at various examination centres in the state. They were allowed inside only after body frisking.

The Supreme Court had yesterday refused to entertain plea of an Islamic organisation that Muslim girl applicants be allowed to wear ‘hijab’ (scarf), a customary religious dress, while appearing for the AIPMT.

“Faith is something different from wearing some kind of cloth,” a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice H L Dattu stated, adding the AIPMT was being held again at its direction and some “reasonable restrictions” were needed.

Kerala High Court had earlier granted conditional permission to two Muslim girls to appear for the test wearing hijab.
In the backdrop of large scale irregularities in the AIPMT held in May this year, the apex court had directed CBSE to conduct a second test following which CBSE imposed a strict dress code, banning jeweleries, hair pins, head scarf or veils, shoes, watches and all electronic devices.

Reacting to the incident, Syro Malabar Church spokesperson Father Paul Thelekkat, said it was “unfortunate” that the nun was not permitted to write the test.

“The Catholic church does not consider veil as the most important religious symbol of the Catholic faith. At the same time, we do not subscribe to the view of the Supreme court Chief Justice that 3-4 hours without veil does not make any difference. It does make and it is up to the citizen to take the decision”, he said here.

Visually-impaired woman denied flat in Delhi for being Muslim

July 24, 2015 by Nasheman

Reem Shamsudeen

New Delhi: Yet another incidence of discrimination, a 30-year-old visually-impaired woman from Kerala has alleged that she was denied a rented house in Delhi for being a Muslim.

Reem Shamsudeen, who is an assistant professor in a college affiliated to Delhi University, claimed that the owner denied her the rented house just because she was a Muslim.

“I had paid the advance amount to the owner. I was refused to move in the apartment just a few hours before I was about to,” she said.

“It’s really a shame for such discrimination to occur in a city like Delhi where thousands of people come in search of education and jobs,” Reem told Madhyamam Daily.

“The incident was shocking considering the cosmopolitan and metropolitan nature of Delhi,” she said.

In a short video uploaded on the YouTube she urged Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to look into the matter.
